In the days leading up to the Spring Seminar, the NCHEA Planning Committee had a major decision to make. COVID-19 was just beginning to spread and make itself known as a worldwide threat. The Planning Committee had to choose: carry on as planned, or cancel the event. In re-gard to canceling, President Deon Lewis said, “We were prepared, but at that point, the informa-tion we had didn’t drive us to the point of canceling the seminar. If we’d had it one week later, it would have been shut down. But it was the right call at the time, and we got through safely.”

Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, NCHEA put on one of its best events to date. Program Chair Jeff Forsyth put together a great program with a strong lineup of educational speakers. He planned the program around this year’s theme, Focus on Our Mission. In addition, he said he also picked speakers based on “what I thought a healthcare engineer would want to hear about and what was relevant for the time, before COVID. It was all about construction, which has been a big topic lately.”

The education sessions included Behavioral Health Safety and Regulatory Inspections, Doors and Hardware for Healthcare, Pharmacies: USP <800> Compliance and Hazardous Drugs, Mock Pre-Construction Risk Assessment, Preparing for Accreditation Surveys, and Water Damage Mitigation Strategies in the Healthcare Environment.

The seminar began on Wednesday, March 11 with The Cradle FUNdraiser, a charity golf event benefitting Family Promise of Moore County. Family Promise provides shelter, meals, and ser-vices for homeless women with children in their custody.

Thursday kicked off with the Program Introduction and Scholarship Presentation. Usually, the scholarship winners are announced during the Annual Conference in the summer, however, this year NCHEA chose recipients from Montgomery Community College, which is very close to Pinehurst. NCHEA wanted to allow as much participation from the college as possible, so it made more sense to move the scholarship presentation to the Spring Seminar.

This presentation was followed by the keynote speech from First Sergeant Matt Eversmann.

ENGINEER STIMULUS PACKAGE

Eversmann is a military hero whose brave story is portrayed in the film, Black Hawk Down. In his speech, he shared insights he’s gained from his 20 years in the military as well as his experiences in healthcare, non-profit, and data management industries.

With the corona virus pandemic escalating every day, travel restrictions were implemented requiring attendees to return to their healthcare facili-ties early. Even Jeff Forsyth had to leave in the middle of the seminar that he had planned so much of. Weeks later, he said, “I heard I did a good job! I got a lot of positive feedback about the speakers.”

Deon Lewis praised the associate membership. “They rallied and were there to support.” Despite the decline in full membership attendance, and the daily changes to travel restrictions, the Spring Seminar was a success and a great experience for all who were able to attend. “I want us to be proud of the way the association has represented itself and sup-ported its members through these times,” said Deon.

Looking forward, NCHEA is fully planning on holding its Annual Confer-ence in August this year. Deon stated, “If the government is allowing conferences to happen, we’re going to have it. More than ever, we need to get together as a community and support each other and tell our stories.”

He also shared that due to strong leadership in the past, the association is financially strong and will offer a stimulus check to full members to help pay for lodging at the conference.

Jeff Forsyth has already reached out looking for speakers and received over 200 emails in response. Planning is in full-swing! “Thanks to the support of the Planning Committee,” Deon said, “we are planning on delivering an awesome program.”

NCHEA LOCAL COMMUNITY EVENTNorma Jannone with Family Promise of Moore County accepted a check of $1000.00 from Deon Lewis on Friday, March 13 at the Spring Seminar. On the way out the door, our “orange bucket” added a few more dollars to our donation. The Cradle Golf Event donated profit and mulligans for this event.

Deon Lewis’s wife Melanie joined Deon in the fun at the opening recep-tion. Didn’t get the middle guy’s name, but we all think the “luck of the Irish” was with us at the Spring Seminar!

I hope this find you healthy and well. What an interesting time. Our expertise in facilities management has never been needed as much as now and our knowledge and sys-tems have never been more challenged as we plan and implement strategies to handle unprecedented patient surges and keep our teammates safe. It is a great time to work in healthcare and we are really making a difference in the lives of our teammates, patients and community.

During this ASHE has remained at the forefront of technical information and networking with many tools and publications. I hope you fund the daily myASHE COVID-19 Busi-ness Partners Resource Roundup informative and useful. There are also many other single topic papers in issues, such as Re-opening Facilities to Provide Non-emergent Non-COVID-19 Healthcare: Phase 1 and Templates for submitting inspection, testing and maintenance waivers to CMS. These and other information can be found at https://www.ashe.org/COVID19resources.

ASHE has strengthened their relationships with other professional organizations such as ASHRAE, The Joint Commission and CDC during this period, with the organization cross-referencing each other’s information. The webinars (now in the On Demand library) were timely and provided excellent information.

Although this year’s PDC Summit was cancelled, ASHE has put together webinar series addressing some of the key topics that PDC attendees seek out addressing cutting-edge topics affecting the future of the health care built environment including cross-team col-laboration, PDC sustainability, designing for future generations, technology integration, and more. Fins more information at https://www.ashe.org/2020-pdc-summit-webinar-series.

If your facility had an energy reduction of 10% or more last calendar year, I highly recommend applying for and for an Energy to Care award. These awards highlight this significant accomplishment to your leadership and recognizes your facility nationally. ASHE recognizes that these past few months have been challenging for many of us and has extended the deadline for applying to July 1, 2020. And don’t forget about ASHE’s premier award for energy reduction – Energy to Care Champion Award honoring a single facility that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in energy efficiency. The deadline for this award had also been extended to July 1, 2020.

Congratulations to ASHE for their work promoting healthcare facility management opera-tional excellences as shown by receiving the 2020 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award—Sustained Excellence for the second year in a row, marking the fourth consecu-tive year that ASHE has won an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award. This award recognizes ASHE’s continued leadership and superior contributions to ENERGY STAR.

Thank you for what you do, as our job helps keep people healthy and safe in these trying times. Be safe, be well and I hope to see you soon.
