Achievements 2MFM’sMediaCampaign-‘Together,StandingAgainstExtremismandRacism’-AwinnerwiththeCommunity

This year’s Australian Multicultural Marketing Awards Gala Presentation Ceremony acknowledged the strengths of ethnic diversity in NSW. The awards were held on Monday 12 October 2015 at the Sydney Opera House and hosted by Multicultural NSW.

The awards recognised outstanding marketing campaigns, developed and delivered, by big and small businesses, the public sector, as well as cultural, community and youth organisations. Among the nine award categories - including the communication, small business, big business, arts and culture, communities, education, youth and public sector awards - was the SBS People’s Choice Award.

The 2MFM’s “Together, Standing against Extremism and Racism” campaign emerged as a winner due its long-standing popularity within the community and the significant work on bridging the gap between Australian Muslims and the wider community.

The campaign focused on media coverage, which informed the greater Sydney Muslim community about the introduction of new Australian anti-terror laws, educating them about the risks of extremism, and reassuring the Muslim community on how to deal with the repercussions of terror related incidents. The coverage also promoted positive engagement and collaboration between police officials, government agencies and the Muslim community, while offering strategies to empower them in the face of racism.

Supplementing the broadcast component of the campaign, a series of bilingual announcements were produced warning the Muslim community against befriending individuals or engaging with groups who may be associated with extremist factions. In addition, posters featuring religious quotes denouncing extremism were displayed in mosques, community centres and schools with the campaign tagline, “Together standing against extremism and racism”.

Upon receiving the award, the President of 2MFM, Mr Rafic Hussein, reiterated the Muslim Community Radio’s commitment to countering extremism and racism and helping to build a safe and harmonious Australian society.

“This award highlights the value of the people of Sydney toward living in peace and harmony and of course working together to fight the toxic effects of radicalisation and racism”, Mr Rafic Hussein said.

Moreover, emphasising the importance of producing similar projects, the Media campaign coordinator, Mrs Faten El Dana OAM said:

“We work alongside the Australian community for the betterment of a well-informed, cohesive society through open dialogue to help deal with sensitive issues like extremism and cultural stereotypes that affect our daily lives.”

2MFM was congratulated by a number of dignitaries who attended the ceremony, including Multicultural NSW’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Hakan Harman, SBS Managing Director, Michael Ebed and Minister for Multiculturalism, Mr John Ajaka, MLC, Member for Parramatta, Mr Geoff Lee and Chairman of the Anti-Discrmination Board, Mr Stepan Kerkyasharian.

Kids Show Award – NEMBC Youth Program of the Year

One of the most well-known,participated in and anticipated showsboth live on air and on grounds is the2MFMkids show. From its story tellingweekends to its challenging games ofriddles, literacy, numeracy and skillbased tests, kids from all aroundAustralia tune in to the show everyweekend, and specialoccasions like theschool holidays, Ramadan and Eideditions,tolearnandenjoyafuntimeonair.

Notonlyhas the showbuilt confidenceforkidstocontacttheradiostation,butithasalsobeenaclassroomforthekidsto learn from each other both religiousand school-based knowledge. Kids getcompetitive, they get excited and mostimportantlytheyparticipate.

Therefore in light of such an amazingprogram, that even adults listen toregularly,2MFMwasproudtoannouncethat its kids show program won theNEMBCawardforyouthprogramoftheyear. The Award was presented to the2MFM Deputy President Mr. AbdulGhannoum at the NEMBC Gala Dinnerheld on the second night of the AnnualNEMBCconferenceinVictoria.

LaunchoftheAnnualWomeninNSW2015Report

Onthe25thofNovember2015,2MFMwas invited to cover the launch ofWomen in NSW 2015 Report. Theevent covered an array of topics, andallowed members of the public,community,governmentandbusinesssectorstogainaninsightonarangeofsocial and economic outcomes forwomen. The event was convened byMinister forWomenPruGowardwhoafter the event gave a few words to2MFM explaining the governmentsefforts in tackling domestic violencethrough a number of governmentfundedprogramsandinitiatives.

2MFMcoverageoftheMWWAWhiteRibbonBarbecue:‘Drawtheline’

During the White Ribbon DayAwareness campaign, the Muslimcommunityradiowasinvitedtocoverthe Muslim Women’s Welfare ofAustralia (MWWA) exclusive WhiteRibbon Family Barbeque held on theonthe29thofNovember2015.The theme for the event was ‘Drawthe line’, as attendees wereencouragedtotakeastanceanddrawthe lineondomesticviolence.A largeamount of families dedicated theirSunday to joining MWWA in theirawareness day to help change thefacts, and stop the problem before itstartsbypreventingtheoccurrenceofdomesticviolence.Theeventfocusedonthepositiverolethat men could play both on apersonal level and in influencing theactions of other men within thecommunity, in the hope of reducingthe prevalence of such a tragicsituation.Special guests attended and offeredtheir support to the work of MWWAand provided some importantinformation on the issue of domesticviolence.

AmongthemwereTheDeputyChairofDarulfatwa, his Eminence SheikhIbrahimElShafie,AssistantMinisterforMulticulturalAffairs,SenatorConcettaFierravanti- Wells who also voicedthe support of her colleagueMinisterfor Women, Senator Michaelia Cash,Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism,Sophie Cotsis MLC, and Finally,Superintendent at Bankstown PoliceLocalAreaCommand,DaveEardley.All the attendees at the event weregiven a resource produced by theMWWA team which gives a clearunderstanding of what domesticviolence is, the causes and effects ofdomestic violence, its devastatingimpactoneverymemberofthefamily,the religious judgement on domesticviolence and various strategies forcombatting domestic violence. Manyattendeesweredelightedtogetacopyand they commented on how“beneficialitwas”.

Onthe17thOctober2015,2MFMwasinvitedtoparticipateinthePoliceandCommunityEngagementDayatPrariewoodHighSchool.2MFMstaffandvolunteersenjoyedthefunfilledfamilyday,andinterviewedsomeorganisersandguestsoftheevent.
