1 Happy New Year to you all and welcome back after what I hope has been an enjoyable Christmas break for everyone. We are now at the start of two six week terms leading up to the Easter break; short they may be but they will be busy! Young people in Years 11 and 13 will be sitting mock examinations in preparation for GCSEs and A Levels in the summer and the Year 6 children will be stepping up their SATs preparation during this period. This is also a period of the year when the weather can be bad and when colds and coughs are common. Obviously, we want to do all we can to ensure that we minimise any disruption to children and young peoples’ education so in adverse weather conditions we will only close a school if we deem there to be a health and safety risk and we encourage first class attendance at school for all our pupils and students as we know this makes a significant difference to academic attainment and therefore life chances. Wishing all our children, staff, parents and families a happy and successful 2020. Sarah Busby, CEO Bemerton Students Visit Wyvern St Edmund’s Year 5 pupils spent the day at WSE Science Department where they spent time with ex Bemerton St John students learning about life at Wyvern St Edmund’s. They discussed different types of pressure, in particular air pressure, which they may not have even considered before; this was demonstrated by sucking a boiled egg into a conical flask, collapsing drinks cans and Mr Cutt’s bottle rocket! Happy New Year to you all and welcome back after what

I hope has been an enjoyable Christmas break for

everyone. We are now at the start of two six week terms

leading up to the Easter break; short they may be but

they will be busy! Young people in Years 11 and 13 will

be sitting mock examinations in preparation for GCSEs

and A Levels in the summer and the Year 6 children will

be stepping up their SATs preparation during this period.

This is also a period of the year when the weather can be

bad and when colds and coughs are common. Obviously,

we want to do all we can to ensure that we minimise any

disruption to children and young peoples’ education so

in adverse weather conditions we will only close a school

if we deem there to be a health and safety risk and we

encourage first class attendance at school for all our

pupils and students as we know this makes a significant

difference to academic attainment and therefore life

chances.

Wishing all our children, staff, parents and families a

happy and successful 2020.

Sarah Busby, CEO

Bemerton Students Visit Wyvern St Edmund’s

Year 5 pupils spent the day at WSE Science Department

where they spent time with ex Bemerton St John

students learning about life at Wyvern St Edmund’s.

This was followed by time in the WSE lab facilities

conducting experiments. They discussed different types

of pressure, in particular air pressure, which they may

not have even considered before; this was demonstrated

by sucking a boiled egg into a conical flask, collapsing

drinks cans and Mr Cutt’s bottle rocket!

The pupils reported that they had really enjoyed their

time at WSE and the chance to work in a laboratory.

Nativity – A Miracle in Town

KS1 students put on a wonderful production this year,

with great acting skills and beautiful singing from all the

children. Well done everyone for a great performance.

Museum Visit

Year 4 pupils recently visited Salisbury Museum as part

of their Romans project. The Museum staff held a

workshop with the pupils where they explained about

archaeology and how archaeologists research the past

and uncover their finds. The pupils then made their own

broken pots from clay this was followed by time spent in

the new Wessex Gallery, an interactive area with

artefacts from the Stonehenge World Heritage Site, the

Pitt-Rivers Wessex Collection and the Amesbury Archer.

Recent News from the Creative Faculty at S6C

S6C Digital Media students have been busy prepping

their music video unit with production commencing a

couple of weeks ago. This has included various shoots

including working with neon lights, a smoke machine,

electric spectacles, bathing in £50 notes, smashing fruit

and dressing up as David Bowie.

Life Skills

Being part of a local community is important for the

personal development of students and staff. S6C were

pleased to be able to work together as a College creating

enough giant paper stars to decorate Alabaré venues this

Christmas. Donations of Christmas food items were

distributed to their clients as gifts. Thanks to all for being

generous with your time and donations.

University Offers

Students at S6C were extremely busy before the end of

December submitting their applications to the University

and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) with a view to

securing places at universities across the country for

September of this year. This is now the exciting time

when offers for individuals start coming through thick

and fast. To give you an idea of the range of courses our

students study beyond S6C here are just a few of the

offers of places our young people have already received:

Chemical Engineering at Imperial College

History at Exeter University

Medieval History at Queen Mary University

English Literature at Oxford Brookes

Cyber Security at Sheffield Hallam University

Psychology at Southampton University

Business & Management at Sussex University

Economics & Politics at Bristol University

Sustainable Development at St Andrews University

With the UCAS deadline next week, we look forward to

hearing of more success for our students in the coming

weeks.

The Big Sleep

In December, Sarum organised a BIG SLEEP OUT to

support the homeless where they raised in excess of their

target of £750 for the charity Alabaré. Alabaré is a charity

that supports vulnerable, homeless and marginalised

people. They help them transform their lives, providing

accommodation and helping them gain the skills,

confidence and opportunities to live a fulfilled life.

Sixth Form Taster Sessions at Sarum

Last month Sarum Academy welcomed students from

Trafalgar and St Edmund’s Schools for taster sessions in

Hairdressing. Lisa Cochrane – Teacher of Hairdressing-

was hugely impressed with the effort and outcomes.

Sarum Academy Centre stage at the Christmas Market

Sarum Academy’s Art Department and Art students

helped decorate the Advent Calendar inspired

installation at the Christmas market this year.

St Thomas’s Tree Festival

8B students, led by Erica, Lidia, Dale, Iris and Marcus

created this wonderfully decorated tree, inspired by their

chosen charity; Salisbury Trust for the Homeless. Their

main ideas were: homes (as the homeless long for their

own), mugs of tea (as people chat about their problems

over cups of tea), sofas (as homeless people often ‘sofa

surf’), keys (as the homeless long for the key to their own

house and STFH are the ‘key’ to getting there) and woolly

hats (because it’s cold outside!). Well done to all

involved!

The theme of this year’s Carol Service was ‘Christmas

Around the World’ and many of the pieces were written

in countries across the globe including Europe, Africa,

Brazil and America. The evening began in complete

darkness before a soloist and the choir introduced the

first couple of verses of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’. The

transition from darkness to light was enchanting and set

the magical atmosphere for the rest of the evening. For

the first time at a Wyvern St Edmund’s Carol Service an

all boys’ choir, aptly named ‘Limited Edition’ performed

a contemporary piece called ‘All Around the

World’. Throughout the service there were

performances by the choir, instrumentalists and

percussionists as well as readings from The Bible. The

entire service was greatly applauded and donations were

kindly made towards the school’s charities. The

enormous efforts of Wyvern St Edmund’s Head of Music,

Mrs Ritchie, Head of the Choir, Mrs Randall and all the

staff and pupils resulted in another stunning service that

left the audience singing the praises of all involved.
