Principal’s Message Week 2 Term 2

Welcome back!

We began the term with a visit to the school from the Minister for Education the Honourable Sarah Mitchell and local MP

Adam Marshall. They were greeted by Alex Harris, Mia Drozdowski, Jack Coddington and Olivia Rush who invited them to

join us for lunch and take a tour of the school. Although a very short visit, it was wonderful

to show off our school.

This term we have many exciting activities planned including the Science Discovery Van,

Life Education Van, Armidale Eisteddfod, Multi-Cultural Public Speaking Competition,

debating and many additional sporting events. It is very busy and while we do try to

ensure notes are handed out with a reasonable timeframe for return. At times, due to the

nature of the activity, a very short turnaround is needed.

All notes for all activities must be returned by the due date. Students who arrive on the

day of the activity with a note will not be permitted to attend. To avoid the disappointment

of your child missing out, I encourage you to check your child’s bags regularly for notes,

read the newsletter and access school stream.

Armidale Eisteddfod

The Armidale Eisteddfod is on again this year and once again we will be participating in

this event. This is an example of an activity that may have a short turn around period for

permission notes as often the program has last minute changes which impact upon us.

We have school choirs, individual class items and the orchestra all involved.

NAPLAN

Another less exciting but important event is NAPLAN for Year 3 and Year 5, from 14 - 24

May. Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper, while all other tests,

including the Year 5 writing test will be completed via the NAPLAN Online testing

platform. Students will participate in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and

Numeracy over the two week period. This timeframe will also allow for make-up times if

students are unwell or absent on the day their test occurs. Please ensure students are

well-prepared for the testing sessions by getting a good night’s sleep and being at school

on time. Information, including a demonstration of the testing platform is available on the

National Assessment Program website.

Painting

Over the next few weeks the classrooms in the Year 1 corridor will be given a makeover.

This will include fresh paint on walls, ceilings, windows and doors. There will be

disruption to classes during this period but the result will be worth the inconvenience.

Classes will be held during the library while painting is taking place.

Library Borrowing

There will be disruption to library borrowing for the next few weeks due to NAPLAN and painting. During this week’s

painting, library lessons will be held in classrooms therefore borrowing will only occur at lunch times. There will be no

borrowing at all from 13 - 22 May during NAPLAN. I apologise for the inconvenience.

UR Strong Parent Workshop and Festival of Friendship

Our Festival of Friendship begins this week with students participating in a range of activities designed to encourage the

skills of friendship. This is in preparation for our workshop on Friday evening with Dana Kerford and Teacher Professional

Learning on Saturday 11 May. If you have not purchased tickets to attend, I encourage you to do so. So far more than 130

tickets have been sold.

The workshop begins at 6:00pm in the school hall.

Cross Country

Congratulations to all students who participated in the District Cross Country last Friday. Ben Venue were overall

winners with several students progressing to the next level of competition. Thank you to Sue Lye and Anne-Maree

Pattison for accompanying the students, Richard Cotter for his help in setting up and Rebecca O Hara for the overall

organisation of the day. Without such support from schools and their staff these events would not be able to run.

ICAS Competitions

ICAS Competitions are moving online this year. All tests will be online and will occur later than usual. Notes will go home

about the ICAS Competitions in the upcoming weeks.

Opportunity class placement

Notes went home with interested Year 4 students last week. If you would like your child to be considered for an

opportunity class placement in Year 5 at Armidale City Public School in 2020 and you did not receive a note please

contact the school. The online application website is now open. Please ensure notes are returned if an online application

is submitted. Late applications will not be considered.

EARN and LEARN

Our school is once again participating in this. Last year we were able to purchase a variety of sporting and PE

equipment including sets of footballs, basketballs and netballs, stopwatches, discus, relay batons and tape measures

just to name a few items. The return box is located in the school foyer.

STUDENT SAFETY

Please be reminded that the supervised pick up area for students is Erskine St. Students who are not collected before

3:40 pm are required to wait in the reception area of the school foyer. This is to ensure student safety. Taylor St is not a

supervised pick up area.

3E Welcome to a very busy and exciting term. Everyone looks rested and ready to learn. It is wonderful to see

all their smiling faces and hear their holiday stories. I have heard that some of the bean plants are continuing to

grow at home! Maybe we will even get some beans to eat!

This term we will be learning about Australia and the similarities and differences with our neighbouring

countries. Our homework will include a research project on a neighbouring country.

We will be exploring how Earth’s surface changes over time in our Science unit.

3E students are excited about the Festival of Friendship this week and look forward to learning more about

how to be inclusive and friendly.

Please encourage your child to read every day and change their school reader as needed and please ensure

that your child has lead pencils, a pencil sharpener, gluesticks and a ruler so they are organised for the term.

Thank you to all parents who met with me for an interview last term. It was lovely to meet you all and to gain

some insights into your child.

3E will be performing at the Armidale Eisteddfod on Wednesday 5 June at the Old Teacher's College Auditorium. We are performing a musical item and Mrs Porter is very pleased with our musical talent. A permission note will be sent home closer to the date. We will also perform the item at our 3-6 assembly on 24 May as a warm up! We would love to see you there! We will also be rescheduling our excursion to Saumarez very soon.

Library News

I would like to congratulate those students who represented BVPS in the Interschool Chess Challenge at PLC last term. They achieved third place in the primary division and as a result have the opportunity to compete in the semi finals later in the year. I would also like to acknowledge the excellent achievement of the four students who took part in the Kids Lit Quiz at ACPS last term. The Ben Venue team were the top performing primary school, beaten only by two high school teams. It was not only their knowledge of literature that was impressive but also their conduct and enthusiasm. The library was recently successful in applying for a grant which will allow us to begin the establishment of a maker space within the library. This will provide an environment in which students can apply their STEM knowledge and gain experience working with advancing technologies. To help support our 'unplugged' maker space activities, we would be extremely happy to accept any donations of Lego, Lego boards, cogs or gears, Magna Tiles or marble runs that are no longer being used at home.

Thank you to all students and families who returned their overdue books last term. If you have any outstanding loans please return them on your child's next library day.

PDHPE Report

In Term 1 all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participated in a variety of Physical Education (PE) lessons

focussed on developing their Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS). Over the first half of the term all classes worked

on developing their running, catching and throwing skills. The lessons were based on the development of these skills

though individual practice, working with a partner or small group and applying these skills in a variety of games.

In the second half of the term Years K, 1 and 2 focussed on jumping, hopping and skipping skills and were able to

put these skills into practice in a variety of relay games and obstacle course activities. Years 3-6 were focussing on

the two handed strike which included using a variety of bats and balls to refine their skills before moving on to

games such as T-ball, cricket and tennis.

In Term 2 K-2 students will be participating in a variety of introductory athletics activities with a focus on running,

jumping and throwing using modified equipment. Stage 2 (years 3 and 4) students will be participating in

intermediate athletics activities such as running, jumping, leaping and throwing. Stage 3 (years 5 and 6) will be

focussed on advanced athletics skills in preparation for our upcoming athlectics carnivals. Students will be refining

their field event skills in high jump, long jump, shot put and discus.

P&C News

Welcome back to Term 2. We have a busy term ahead of us. If you are able to help out in anyway that would be great.

Thursday 9 May we will be providing a supper for the Kindergarten Reading Workshop. If you are able to help by making a cake or slice and leaving it at the office prior or help to prepare the platters from 2:00pm on Thursday in the canteen it would be greatly appreciated!

Saturday 11 May we will be providing morning tea and lunch for the staff attending the UR Strong workshop. If you are able to make a cake/slice or lasagne these items can be left at the office on Friday. Or if you can help on the day from 9:30am to make salads that would be fantastic!

Saturday 18 May we will be running a cake stall and wood raffle at the school hall during the election . If

you are able to bake and leave goodies at the front office prior to the day or help out on the stall that would be amazing!!!

P&C Meeting will be held on Wednesday 5 June at 6:00pm at the Armidale City Bowling Club.

Parent Club will be on Friday 7 June from 9:10am in the staff room. Congratulations to the 5 Easter Raffle winners; Lillian Meredith, Lorenzo Hart, Lorna Barday, Joey Forster & Hudson Pearce. Thank you everyone for your support we raised over $2,000. These funds will go towards the Phase 2 Landscaping Project. It was with great pride the P&C were able to present 9 children who were selected to represent the North West Hockey Team with a contribution towards their commitment. Congratulations to these children.

There are a lot of things to get done, however there are a lot of us. If we all do a small amount it will be easy! If you are able to help out in anyway please contact me by email [email protected] or phone 0427 758 350 or message us on Facebook. Thank you to Parent Club for your ongoing support and help to our school! All funds raised this year will be going towards Phase 2 of our Landscaping project. We look forward to a fun and successful term ahead. Hannah Coddington
