where great things are always happening!
Welcome to Week 10Term 3 Monday September 19, 2016
Georgina Morgan visit
Ben Venue was extremely lucky last week to have a visit from former student
and current Australian Olympian, Georgina Morgan. She spoke to the students
at a special assembly on Wednesday and shared her favourite memories of the
Rio Olympics, the highlights of her career so far and gave budding athletes a
few tips on achieving their dreams. It really was a privilege to have her visit us!
Georgina gave us one of her playing uniforms signed by the Hockeyroos which
we will frame and proudly display in the school.
Spelling Bee
Congratulations to the students who represented Ben
Venue at the Regional Final in Tamworth last week. What a fabulous achievement. Tahaf
Omar won the Regional Final of the 2016 senior section and will now represent our school
and region at the State Final in Sydney in November.
What a fabulous achievement!
Kidpreneur
Last Friday was ‘Market Day’ at Ben Venue and students were dazzled by the
creativity of 4/5/6M. Bird boxes, cardigans, magnets – goods of all shapes
and sizes were on offer. Thank you Mrs O’Connell for all your work on this.
Not only does the school benefit from this wonderful enterprise but your
students have acquired valuable life skills that they will use in the future.
Congratulations to Paul Osler who was the winner of the wood raffle.
Holidays
The holidays are quickly approaching! I hope you all have a restful and safe
break. Students and teachers return to school on Monday October 10 as
there is no Staff Development Day.

STARMAKER
Years 3-4 Semi-Final Monday September 10
From 2:00pm - 3:15pm in the hall
Grand Final
Wednesday September 21
From 1:50pm– 3:15pm
Through the classroom music program, students have completed Round 1 of Starmaker. What fabulous acts I
have been privileged to see from the students. Students have judged all the acts and are learning how important
it is to be a good and fair judge!
A big thank you to the teachers in our school who have supervised students practising their acts. Your help has
been greatly appreciated.
These afternoons of finals are great, so if you have some spare time come along and be entertained by the
talented students of Ben Venue. Yours in Music, Sally Spillane
Netball News
Congratulations to all of the Net Set Go and Primary Netball players as we end the 2016 season.
Congratulations to the Hot Shots and the Opals for both fabulous games in the Grand Final on Saturday. Although each team were Runners Up in their divisions, all players should be proud of their commitment and efforts throughout the season.
Could all players please return their washed dresses to Mrs Hall as soon as possible? Please ensure you return it in a bag marked with your name so all dresses can be accounted for. Thank you Kelly Hall.
Around the Classrooms ……...
6C has been extremely busy this term in the
classroom and on the stage getting ready for the
Year 6 Performance ‘Happily Ever After?’.
In English we have looked at the perspectives and
viewpoints of a variety of Myths and Legends from
countries across the world. Tales of Pandora,
Maud and the Dragon, Medusa and the legends of
Robin Hood and Ned Kelly have been on our
reading list this term. Students have investigated
the difference between a myth and a legend, and
worked to appreciate diverse cultures and
traditions through these stories. Students learned
that ‘word-of-mouth’ or passing on a story orally is
not the most ideal way to tell a story, as stories
change or are misheard over time. To conclude the
unit the students have published their own Myth or
Legend story and then in creative arts they created
their own mythical creature using clay.
In Science this term the students have been
working on the unit ‘Earthquake Explorers’. It has
given opportunities for students to explore when
and where earthquakes have occurred and why
they happen in certain places more than others.
Please ensure your student has all their materials
required for learning at school each day. Some
students are regularly forgetting pencil cases that
contains their ruler, pens, pencils, glue and
scissors that are required to complete lessons.

1/2H What a busy term 1/2H has had!
Over the last 2 weeks, 1/2H students have been
busy exploring our local area with a field trip to the
local parklands and an excursion to Thalgarrah.
The students enjoyed discovering different parks
that are in our area and discussing the various
ways people use these spaces.
1/2H were very lucky to have a beautiful spring day
for our excursion to Thalgarrah. Students looked at
how people are connected to places and in
particular, explored the close connection Aboriginal
people have to the land. 1/2H used charcoal from
the fire to sketch a scarred tree, found natural
materials from the bush to build mini shelters,
collected firewood to make a fire to cook part of our
lunch which was fresh hot potatoes. Yum! We
became bush detectives and searched for the
many signs of animal life in the bush using our
clever mapping skills to map where they could be
found. What a fantastic and busy day!
In Maths 1/2H been learning about fractions and
have just started looking at money. I think we’ll
have to put our skills to the test during 4/5/6M’s
Kidpreneur Market Day and even at the Ben Venue
Chocolate Bingo night, for those who are attending!
1/2H have also been busy working on learning
goals. In particular students have been striving to
move up our ‘Bump it Up’ wall by improving our
ability to count backwards, forwards, by tens and
hundreds from any number. It’s been exciting to
see students achieving their goals and being
motivated to continue to improve and reach the top.
Great work, everyone!
I hope you have a safe and restful holiday. I look
forward to another wonderful and busy term ahead
with 1/2H. Lana Howlett
