Principal’s Message Week 5 Term 1

Congratulations to all the swimmers who represented Ben Venue last Thursday at the Zone Swimming Carnival. Student

behaviour, team spirit and effort were excellent with many students moving to the next level of competition. As yet I have

not been provided with the names of Regional Representatives, but I wish them well at the carnival next Tuesday.

UR Strong – Social Emotional Wellbeing Program

Friendship issues impact significantly on students and teachers. Students are not able to focus on learning when they are

worried about friendships and teachers find that a large portion of their time is spent trying to help students with these

issues. In many cases issues can be ongoing and become all consuming.

In keeping with our priority areas of student learning, student safety and wellbeing we have sourced an exciting program

that aims to support students to develop the skills required for developing positive respectful relationships. This program

will begin in Term 2 with a parent & child workshop on Friday 10 May, teacher Professional Learning on Saturday 11 May

and student learning from Monday 13 May. We believe that empowering our students and parents with these skills will

create a school community where children are better able to manage their relationships in a safe and respectful

environment.

We’re excited to be hosting URSTRONG, an internationally recognized Social Emotional Wellbeing Program, which

empowers children with the skills, language and self-confidence to be better friends and develop healthier relationships.

To learn more about URSTRONG I would encourage you to visit their web site (www.urstrong.com) where they have a

number of free resources for parents.

To register for the parent/child workshop please follow the link. The Language of Friendship Workshop, Friday 10 May.

Colour Run

Don’t forget the Colour Run is on this Friday. Students from K-2 begin the course at 3:45pm. Students from Years 3-6 start

at 4:45pm. Please come along and join in the fun.

Student Notes and Deadlines

This is a friendly reminder that all permission notes must be returned by the due date. The organisation of excursions

relies on the prompt return of notes. In many cases we cannot add to student numbers once these have been established.

In addition to this, returning notes and payment on the day of the excursion is not acceptable as risk assessments, groups,

buses etc have all been finalised. The office staff are not in a position to ring parents of students who have not returned

notes on the day of the excursion.

To avoid your child missing out and being disappointed it is important to ask your child for any notes they may have

received. You may even like to check their bags. It is a child’s responsibility to take all notes home. Spare notes are kept

at the office.

You can keep up to date with events by reading the newsletter and looking at the calendar.

A huge thank you to all parents who helped on the day. We would not be able to run the carnival without you and your assistance was greatly appreciated.

Following the school carnival, 42 students were selected to represent Ben Venue at the Armidale District Carnival last week.

All swimmers participated in the District Carnival with great enthusiasm and an excellent sense of fair play, supporting each other and cheering each other on during events. Most swimmers swam improved times from the school carnival and can be very proud of their effort.

A number of Ben Venue swimmers will now participate in the Regional Swimming Carnival to be held in Armidale on Monday 4 March. Keep an eye out for the results of this carnival in the BenVenews over the next few weeks.

Around the Kindergarten Classrooms

4G have had a busy start to the year! In English this term we are looking at ‘Point of View’ and how the author is able to convince

us to believe certain things through clever language choices. Students will be looking at some fiction texts as well as media

presentations throughout the term to examine how our views change. At the moment in Maths we are working on learning a

range of strategies to assist us with addition. We will be practising these through our homework this term. In Geography we are

learning about sustainability, why it is important for the environment and ways we can be more sustainable.

Thank you to all the parents that have covered books in our fabulous artworks so far. The clear contact is an important addition

that keeps all our books protected. There will be some more of these coming home later this week. Also, as we are doing a lot of

art the Sharpies that were on our supplies list for the beginning of the year are coming in very handy! If you have not purchased

one of these for your child it would be wonderful if you could do so as soon as possible.

Don’t forget about the Colour Run this Friday! It would be lovely to see as many students and parents there as possible.

Crunch&Sip Ideas Crunch&Sip is a set time during class time for primary school students to ‘refuel’ on vegetables, salad or fruit, and ‘rehydrate’ with water. Students who are not hungry and are well hydrated perform better in the classroom, show increased concentration, and are less likely to be irritable and disruptive. Many students are not eating enough fruit and vegetables or keeping sufficiently hydrated.

Attendance

Regular school attendance gives your child the best opportunity for academic and social success, both now and into the

future. The NSW Government School Attendance Policy states that ‘parents are required to explain the absences of their

children from school promptly and within seven days to the school. An explanation for absence must be provided to the

school within 7 days of the first day of any period of absence.’

For various reasons, your child may be absent from school from time to time. We ask that all absences are explained via a

note to your child’s class teacher or a call to the office. When students are absent from school and an explanation has not

yet been received, an automatic SMS or email reminder is sent. For absences that remain unexplained, class teachers

send home purple slips, seeking details of the reason for absence.

If you know in advance that your child will be absent from school, please speak to your child’s teacher. Applications for temporary exemption from school are only required for periods of 10 days or more. These can be requested from the school and should be submitted to the Principal in advance.
