Levin Elec· . . by Ja1
Except for one majo for an ocCill!ional <»-tine vote by Greenbt. . _ .• c. (Gffi) Board· member Donald Comis, the Gm Board of Directors acted with IIDILJiimity and harmony on most agenda items at its December 16 meeting. The significant exception was a letter to 11M Greellbelt City Coomcil expressing oppoeition to JII'OIIOIIed improvements to Parkway which was approved by a five-to-four vote. The meeting also included a number of board deeisiona relating to the January 7 special membership meeting which have been previoWJ)y J"eiiOrted about in the December 12 issue of thia paper. consideration of a living trust agreement fonnat for use by owners of Gm homes and approval for upgrading the corporation's computer BOftware. ·
The meeting was ca11ed to order by President Alan Freas who had previously announced his resignation as board chair effective that date. He immediate-ly called for nominations :for the election of a President. Comis nominated Vice-president Carole Levin,. There being no other nominations, Levin was unanimously elected. Cornia then nominated Alan Turnbull to the now vacant vice--president slot and be waa alao unanimously elected. Freas. then turned the chair over to Levin pauing on to her his "coJliP'Atulations or condoleucea u wllaa...r the cue m&J' 'be." -()'..._ DMmttter eommenta., Nat Shiadei'IIUUl then read the complete Yenioa of a letter be had written to the News Review which ~uded Freas, noting that he expected the paper to print an abbreviated version of the letter. -·
Parkway Turnbull presented a draft let
ter to the Greenbelt City Council' urging that any reconstruction work on Parkway be conducted in Roch a way aa to keep un-
c-hanged the existing profile of the road. The city bad proposed three alternatives that would significantly alter the road design in order to provide for increased parking along the road. The letter noted the lack of a study of parking usage and needs and advocated non-structural answers to the "presumed" parking problems such as permit systems, incentive programs and other strategies used by other jurisdictions. It contends that the street expansion would have negative etrecte on the envi~tai and aesthetic conditions .. the surrounding areas and --.~ds that stormwater ruaMr from ibe area around the Center already has caused damage and required costly mitigation in the tributaries that feed Greenbelt Lake. Calling Parkway "the unusual combination of apartment living on a 111111al1 road ~et among the trees," the letter questions considering a startling change to the character of .. this pleasant neighborhood street" at a time when there is the pot~sibility of designating Old Green-
belt a historic dit~trid:. Levin welcomed the presenta
tion of the draft letter. However, Director J'ohR O'Boyle opposed sending the letter, contending ':.:1at he had talked to residents of Parkway, and Parking was indeed a "huge" problern. The res· ident parking overflows into the Roosevelt Center lots and their eara use up !!.paces needed for shoppers and the merchaob, be told the board. Also, he felt that sidewalk replacement waa sorely needed. He noted that the city already had a federal Community Development Block Grant to do the work. He hoped that the city would inchade extensive plantings to help upgrade the i)roperty u well aa provicle adequate puking. Be also noted that a study was wmeeessary because the number of parking spaces on Parkway fails to meet the number required by zoning "by a significant amount." As to the effect upon the Jake, he noted that mitigating factors would be required.
Comis liked the rlraft letter. If the board did !<Upport any improvement, he fplt that it should be the miftjmum alterna-tive. .
Turnbull rebutted. O'Boyle by contending that sidewalk!! would be replaced in any event. He claimed that Public Work!! Director Carl Hirsch had advised him that there would be no mitigating factors-that existing standards are adequate. Noting that you don't get places like Greenbelt under existing zoning, Turnbull felt that Parkway residents should be encouraged to walk and use Roosevelt Cente-r.

Some Aerosol Cans Are Now Recyclable
by Tracy Vincent Empty ae~osol cans for furni
ture polish, air freshener, hair 11pray, shaving cream or vegetable oil spray are recyclable at the Recycling Drop-Off Center located inside Budd,Attick Park. About 90% of aerosol cans are steel. Once exnpt7, the plastic nozzle and eap should be discarded. Then they may be de,poaited in the specially JDaJ"ked barrel under the deck. at the Drop-Off.
Jt•s important that eaaa be empty of product and propellant to be properly recycled. If a new can cannot be emptied beeauae at a malfu.etion, the can llhou!d he returned to the point ot pun:haae. Aeros-ol can recydirig is lim. ited to empty food, personal hygiene and general purpose cleaning products only. This program t"annot accept hazardous materials of any kind, spray paint or automotive use cans or excessively rusted cans. The Drop-Off Center is for Greenbelt residenta only. For more information bout recycling, call 474-B:=JOS.

Mediterranean war zone, Casablanca, A1git>r~. Tunis, Sicily, Naples, Casino, Rome, Pisa, Southern France, Lyons, and Par1s. He had been as:iigned to travel with General George Marshall, King George of England, and Secretary of War Stimaon. He was among the the first cameramen in Rome when he entered with General Mark Clark.
Griffin had just come back from three days at the front where the American Fifth Army, the British Eighth, and the French ~were fighting for Casino and was groggy when he heard about the Vesuvius eruption. He flew to Naplea in a Piper Cub and took photographs of the eruption from the air. Aecording to his aecount to the Cooperator, the plane kept stallina- when they approaehed the voleano due to a ehemical reaction of the easoline with the voleanic paea and they were bombarded with falling ash. Meanwhile, in Naplea, foul-smelling aewawe water brought to a boil by voleanie ae~ tivity was used by GI's to heat their K rations. On leavine Naples. be atopped at a point where he eould see both N aplu and the eruptina- mountain, and that is where he took his prize~ winning photol[raph.
