L’entrevueposthumequisuitestfictive.LespropostenusparLucianoBerioetsesinvitéssonttoutefoisvéridiques.Ilssontissusd’entretiens,d’interviews,denotices…
Qu’onmepardonnecettefantaisie:ilm’asembléqu’elleseraitàmêmedefairepartagercequipeutsetrameraufildesmois,desannéesmême,dansl’espritd’uninterprètequiseconsacreàl’élaborationd’unprojetmonographiquetel que cet album. À travers un patient travail de documentation, la fréquentation des partitions elles-mêmes,apparaissentdesquestions,parfoisdesréponses,desintuitions,quicontribuentàlerendrechaquejourunpeuplus“familier”aveclecompositeur,dansunrapportquis’apparentealorsàceluid’undialogueimaginaire.
Touticiestcomposite:une“réponse”peutêtreconstituéeàpartirdequatreoucinqsourcesdistinctesqueplusieursdizainesd’annéesséparentparfois,maisjen’aimodifiéaucundiscours.Lesajoutssontmentionnésentrecrochets;jen’aipasfaitapparaîtrelemontage,maislescoupeseffectuéesauseind’unseuletmêmepropossontindiquéespardespointsdesuspensionentreparenthèses.

GeoffroyJourdain:LucianoBerio,l’ensembledevotreœuvresembles’inventeràpartird’unrapportintimeàlavoix,à tous lesaspectsde l’oralité,etsenourrirdes relations tisséesentre lesmotset leurspropriétésphonatoiresetacoustiques.
LucianoBerio:Lavoix,dubruitleplusinsolentauchantleplussublime,signifietoujoursquelquechose,ellerenvoietoujours à autre chose qu’elle-même. Elle suscite des associations et porte toujours en elle un modèle, qu’il soitnaturelouculturel.Jem’intéresseàlamusiquevocalequiimiteet,dansuncertainsens,décritcephénomèneprodigieuxquiestl’aspectcentraldulangage:lesonquidevientsens,mêmeau-delàdusenscodifiéetconventionneld’unmot,[qui]sedégagedesmotsetdesessignificationsetprendd’autressignifications,purementmusicales.Ilestimportantpourcelad’avoirégalementuneconscienceacoustiquedumatériauverbal,afindepouvoirentrerdanslesensetlereconquériràtraversladimensionacoustique.

L.B.:Lavoixd’ungrandchanteur“classique”estunpeucommeuninstrumentsignéquel’onrange,aprèsenavoirjoué,danssonétui,unevoixquin’adoncrienencommunaveccelledontlemêmechanteursesertpourcommuniquerdanslaviecourante.Toutcequiestliéàlavoixm’intéresseénormément:quecesoitlavoixnaturelleoulavoixavecmicrophone,leparler,larésonance,lavoixdetête,denez,depoitrineou...commentdire?...d’utérus.Lavoixestlephénomèneleplusrichedumonde.
G.J.:Était-cecelaquevousentendiezillustreren1966aveclaSequenzaIII?
L.B. :Sequenza IIIpoursuit,parcertainscôtés,desrecherches(…)quisont toutes liéesà lavoixdeCathyBerberian,laquelleaétépourmoiunesortedesecond“studiodephonologie”1.Eneffet,SequenzaIIIestnonseulementécritepourCathy,maissurCathy.J’yaicherchéàassimilermusicalementplusieursaspects,mêmetriviaux,delavocalitéquotidienne,sanspourautantrenonceràcertainsaspectsintermédiaires(unrirequisetransformeencoloratura…)etauchantproprementdit.Jetentededélivrerlavoixdecequilalimitait,fairequ’iln’yaitplusdefrontièresentreleparléetlechanté.Lacompositionpourvoixdevientlastructurede“significationsarticulées”.

L’accentestmissurlesymbolismesonoredesgestesvocaux,surles“ombresdesignifiés”quilesaccompagnent,surlesassociationsetlesconflitsqu’ilssuscitent.OnpeutdoncconsidérercetteSequenzacommeunessaidedramaturgiemusicale;d’unecertainefaçon,ellemetenscènelerapportentrel’interprèteetsaproprevoix.
G.J.:Notammentàtraversl’expériencedelavirtuosité…
L.B.:Lavirtuositénaîtsouventd’unconflit,d’unetensionentrel’idéemusicaleet l’instrument,entre lematériauet lamatièremusicale. Jecroisbeaucoupàlavirtuosité:ellepermetlechangementdeniveau,c’est-à-direledéplacementdeschosesduniveaudel’émissionbanaleàceluidel’expressiontransforméeetdelaperception“transfigurée”.Ànotreépoque,levirtuose(…)estunmusiciencapabledeseplacerdansunevasteperspectivehistoriqueetde résoudre les tensionsentrelacréativitéd’hieretcelled’aujourd’hui.
G.J.:Queltextepouvaitseprêteràcetterecherche?
L.B. : Le texte “modulaire”, formé de petites phrases permutables, écrit pour moi par Markus Kutter, étaitparticulièrementadaptéàcetteopération,suffisammentambigupourpermettreunemobilitésyntaxiqueconsidérableet,partant,unemobilitésémantique.Pour contrôler un ensemble aussi vaste de comportements vocaux, il a fallu morceler le texte et le détruire enapparence,afinderécupérerlesfragmentssurdiversplansexpressifsetrecomposerl’ensembleenunitésnonplusdiscursivesmaismusicales.
G.J.:Cetterecompositiondutexteparmodulesdonneparfoisàl’écoutel’impressiond’unepièceàplusieursvoix.
L.B.:TouteslesSequenzepourinstrumentseul2ontencommunlavolontédepréciseretdedéveloppermélodiquementundiscoursessentiellementharmonique,etdesuggérer(…)uneécoutepolyphonique.[DanslaSequenzaIII],sil’onrespecte scrupuleusement les rapports de tempo, on a parfois l’impression, sinon d’une véritable polyphonie, dumoinsd’unesimultanéitédesévénements.
G. J. : À l’inverse, on pourrait considérer l’écriture de O King comme étant davantage monodique – disonshétérophonique–quepolyphonique.Vousyattribuezuneseuleetmêmemélodieunisonoàplusieursinstruments,aux timbres distincts ; la voix y tient un rôle nouveau : pourtant moteur de l’œuvre, elle n’est plus soliste, maisinstrumentparmilesinstruments.
L.B.:OKingrendhommageàlamémoiredeMartinLutherKing.Letexteestconstituésimplementparl’énonciationdunomdumartyrnoir.Lesmotsetleurscomposantssontsoumisàuneanalysemusicale,elle-mêmepartieintégrantede lastructuregénéralede lapièce.Lavoixdoitsonneravec lamêmeintensitéque les instruments. [Elle]énonceunealternanced’élémentsphonétiques,quiaboutitpeuàpeuàladécouverteetàl’énonciationfinale:“OMartinLutherKing”.
G.J.:Laformedecettepièce,enrouléesurelle-mêmeetsonmode,avecsesajoutsaufildes“strophes”,commelestropesimaginairesd’unesortedecantusfirmus,toutcelaévoquecertaineschansonspopulaires.Vosrecherchessurlavoixnepeuventêtredéconnectéesdevotreattirance,profonde,pourlesmusiquesdetraditionorale.
L.B.:Mesrapportsaveclamusiquefolkloriquesontsouventtrèsémotionnels–déjàenfant,j’écrivaisdeschansonsfolkloriquespastiches.Jereviensencoreettoujoursàlamusiquetraditionnelleparcequej’essaiedecréerunlienentreelleetmespropresidéessurlamusique.Monrêve,dontjesaisqu’ilesttoutàfaitutopique,seraitd’unifierlamusiquefolkloriqueetnotremusique–d’établirunvraipassage,perceptibleetcompréhensible,entrecesvieillesmusiquespopulaires,siprochesdulabeurquotidiendesgens,etnotremusique.

G. J. : Aviez-vous déjà cette intention “syncrétique” enécrivantlesFolkSongsen1964?Quelbutpoursuiviez-vousendéplaçantdesmusiquesdetraditionsoraleséloignéeslesunesdesautresdanslechampdelamusiqueclassique?
L.B.:J’aitoujourséprouvéunprofondmalaiseenécoutantdes chansons populaires (c’est-à-dire des expressionspopulaires spontanées) accompagnées au piano. C’estpour cette raison, mais aussi et surtout pour rendre
hommageàl’intelligencevocaledeCathyBerberian3qu’en1964,j’aiécritFolkSongspourvoixetseptinstruments.Ils’agitessentiellementd’uneanthologiedeonzechansonspopulaires(ouprétenduestelles)dedifférentesorigines(États-Unis,Arménie,Provence,Sicile,Sardaigne,etc.),découvertesenécoutantdevieuxdisques…
CathyBerberian:J’aitrouvéparhasardundisqueaveclachansonquiestdevenueladernièredansFolkSongs.J’endevenaisfolleetjecroisquejel’aiécoutéeaumoinsdeuxcentsoutroiscentsfoispourlaprononciationjuste.Etjel’aimetoujourscommelejouroùjel’aidécouverte.
L.B.:…dansdesanthologiesimprimées,ourecueilliesdevivevoixpardesamis.Deuxdeceschansons(Ladonna idealeetBallo),cependant,nesontpasvéritablementdeschansonspopulaires,puisquejelesaicomposéesmoi-mêmeen1947.Lapremièreenm’inspirantdesproposbadinsd’unanonymegénois,lasecondesuruntexteanonymesicilien.
G. J. : Comment définissez-vous votre intervention sur ces chansons ? Les avez-vous arrangées ? Harmonisées ?Orchestrées?
L.B.:Jeleurainaturellementdonnéuneinterprétationmétriqueetharmonique:encesens,onpeutdirequejelesai“recomposées”.Mondiscoursinstrumentalrevêtunefonctiontrèsprécise:suggéreretcommentercequej’aiperçucomme les racines expressives – c’est-à-dire culturelles – de chaque chanson. Ces “racines” ne nous renvoient passeulementauxoriginesetàl’histoiredechaquechanson,maisaussiàl’histoiredel’utilisationquenouspouvonsenfaireaujourd’hui,quandnousnevoulonspasendétruireouenmanipulerlesens.
G.J.:DanslesannéesquiontsuivivosFolkSongs,lesmusiquespopulairesontétédeplusenplusprésentesdansvotredémarchedecompositeur,maisdansunrapportmoinsimmédiatementperceptibleaveclematériauoriginal,aucœurd’unesortede“folkloreimaginaire”.
L.B. :Cet intérêts’estenracinéplusprofondémentet j’aiessayéd’acquérirunecompréhensionplusspécifiqueettechniquedesprocessusquirégissentcertainsidiomespopulaires...J’aitendanceànem’intéresserqu’auxtechniqueset moyens d’expression folkloriques que je peux assimiler d’une manière ou d’une autre sans rupture stylistique,etcelamepermetde fairequelquespasenavantdans la recherched’unitésous-jacenteàdesmondesmusicauxapparemmentétrangers lesunsauxautres (…),nonpascommeuncolonialistequiveutciviliser, s’approprierdeschosespourlesvendre,maiscommeunmusicienavidedeconnaîtreleplusetlemieuxpossible.
G.J.:Ainsi,avecvosCriesofLondon(1974-76),toutenévitantlacitationfolklorique,vousnourrissiezvotreécritureàlasourcemêmedeceschantsdemarchandssiciliens–lesabbagnate–quevousaviezenregistréslorsd’unséjourd’étudeen1968.
L.B. :Quandonm’ademandédefaireunepiècepour legroupevocalTheKing’sSingers4, j’aipensétoutdesuiteauxabbagnate,[qui]sontmerveilleux,d’unecomplexitéassezsouventextraordinaire.Surleplandelatechniquedelavoix,cesontdeschantsremarquables.Etégalementdupointdevuedelarhétoriquedelaséduction.J’aitransférémonintérêtpourlesabbagnatedanslesvieuxtextesanglaisdesmarchandsdesruesduvieuxLondres.
G.J.:Cefaisant,vousvousdistanciiezd’autantplusdumatériauoriginal,commepournevousemparerquedesonessencemême:séductiondonc,virtuosité,voixnaturelle…C’étaitdésormaisdemanière“stylisée”quevousabordiezlamusiquepopulaire.Ce“déplacement”,jusqu’àl’imitationparlavoixdesonsissusdesmusiquesélectroniques,nenouséloignepasdugestefondamentaldesabbagnate,cependant…
L.B.:Dansl’ensemble,cecyclepeutêtreécoutécommeunexercicedecaractérisationetdedramatisationmusicale.Le rapprochement peut paraître bizarre, mais la virtuosité particulière de ces chants m’a toujours fait penser à lafonctionuniverselleduchantd’Orfeodansl’opéradeMonteverdi;c’est-à-direlaséduction.

FedericoFellini:Jesuisconvaincuquesi,àlafindenotrevie,ilnousétaitpermisdedirequelquechose,sinousétionsvraimentsincères,nouschanterionsunechansonnette,entantquerésumédetouteuneexistence.
G. J. : Peut-être plus que tout autre compositeur du XXe siècle,votre musique considère aussi bien les musiques de tradition oraleet écrite, les musiques populaires et classiques, toutes époquesconfondues.Endisparaissantàl’aubeduXXIesiècle,oùsituiez-vouslacréationmusicale?
L.B. : Je ressens le panorama de cette fin de [XXe] siècle comme unegrandediversitédepluralismes.Laconsciencedupluralismeesttrèsdifficileàacquérirparcequecettenotionimpliqueunrespectdefondpourladiversitéculturelle,spirituelle,ethnique.Jecroisqu’ilfautvivredansl’espritdelafindelaRenaissanceetdesdébutsdubaroque,dansl’espritdeMonteverdiquiinventaitlamusiquepourtroissièclesàvenir…Peut-êtrelamusiqueest-elleproprementceci:larecherched’unefrontièreperpétuellementreculée.Danslessièclespassés,parexemple, la“frontière” tonaledélimitaitdes territoiresprécisetprofonds.Denos jours, les territoiressontextrêmementvastes,etlesfrontières,commejamaisencore,mobilesetdenaturediverse.Plusencore,l’objetde la recherche musicale et de la création souvent ne consiste pas à définir une limite perceptive, expressive ouconceptuelle, mais bien plutôt son déplacement lui-même ; elle est justement ce mouvement “avant-gardiste” dereculerlesfrontières.

GeoffroyJourdain:LucianoBerio,thewholeofyouroutputseemstoinventitselffromanintimaterelationshipwiththevoice,witheveryaspectoforality,andisnurturedbytherelationshipswovenbetweenwordsandtheirphonatoryandacousticalproperties.
LucianoBerio:Fromthegrossestnoisetothemostsublimesong,thevoicealwayssignifiessomething;italwaysreferstosomethingotherthanitself.Itelicitsassociationsandalwayscarrieswithinitamodel,whethernaturalorcultural.Iaminterestedinvocalmusicthatimitatesand,inacertainsense,describesthisprodigiousphenomenonwhichisthecentralaspectoflanguage:thesoundthatbecomessense,evenbeyondthecodifiedandconventionalmeaningofaword,[which]emergesfromwordsandtheirsignificationsandtakesonother,purelymusical,significations.Toachievethis,itisimportanttohaveanacousticawarenessoftheverbalmaterialaswell,inordertobeabletoenterthemeaningandreconqueritviatheacousticaldimension.
GJ:Soyoumean thatall typesofvocality–andnotonly thoseof theoperatic tradition–havecontributed to thesingularityofyourexperiments.
LB:Thevoiceofagreat‘classical’singerisalittlelikeasignedinstrumentthatyouputawayinitscaseafterplayingit–avoicethatthereforehasnothingincommonwiththevoicethatthesamesingerusestocommunicateineverydaylife.Everythingthatisrelatedtothevoiceinterestsmeenormously:whetheritisthenaturalvoiceorthevoicewithamicrophone,speech,resonance,theheadvoice,thenosevoice,thechestvoiceor–howshallIputit?–thewombvoice.Thevoiceistherichestphenomenonintheworld.
GJ:WasthatwhatyouintendedtoillustratewithSequenzaIIIin1966?
LB:SequenzaIIIpursues,incertainrespects,linesofresearch(...)thatarealllinkedtoCathyBerberian’svoice,whichwasformeasortofsecond‘phonologystudio’.2Infact,SequenzaIIIwaswrittennotonlyforCathy,butaboutCathy.In it I have tried to assimilate in musical terms many aspects, even trivial ones, of everyday vocality, yet withoutrenouncing certain intermediate aspects (a laugh that turns into coloratura, for instance) and singing proper. I tryto free the voice from what limited it, to ensure that are no more boundaries between the spoken and the sung.Compositionforvoicebecomesthestructureof‘articulatedsignifications’.Emphasisisplacedonthesonicsymbolismofvocalgestures,onthe‘shadowsofthesignified’thataccompanythem,ontheassociationsandconflictstheysuggest.SequenzaIIIcanthereforebeseenasanattemptatmusicaldramaturgy;inacertainsense,itdramatisestherelationshipbetweentheperformerandhisorherownvoice.
