NZ Trio (piano trio) 30 AprilAshley Brown (cello), Sarah Watkins (piano), Justine Cormack (violin) have performed together for over 14 years. Described as ‘New Zealand’s most indispensable ensemble’, they are renowned for daringly eclectic programmes, colourful cross-genre collaborations, and warm Kiwi spirit. Their fresh approach to classical music smashes preconceptions of ‘stuffiness’ and has garnered a wide range of listeners.

NZ Trio has toured Australia, Asia, South America, US, Europe and Scandinavia showcasing NZ music around the globe with an average of three new commissions each year. Recent highlights includeadebutatthe2015DarwinFestivalinAustralia,andan8th return tour to China celebrating the life and music of the late NZ composer, Jack Body.

Christopher Hutton, Reflecting Bach (solo cello) 28 MayWellington-born Christopher Hutton is Associate Professor of VioloncelloatFurmanUniversityinGreenville,SouthCarolinaandalso cellist of the Poinsett Piano Trio. A former co-principal of the NewWorldSymphonyOrchestra,hehasperformedintheUnitedStatesandEurope,recordedforRNZConcertandGermany’sSWFRadio,andappearsonadiscofcontemporarymusiconAlbany Classics. He has enjoyed collaborating with composers, including New Zealanders Helen Bowater and Christopher Marshall.

Christopher returns with a solo programme combining J. S. Bach’s Six Suites for Unaccompanied Violoncello with more recent works to demonstrate links which will resonate with modern audiences.

Aroha Ensemble (string trio) 11 JuneMembers of the Aroha Quartet perform as the Aroha Ensemble. Chinese-bornNZSOfirstviolinistHaihongisagraduateoftheBeijing Central Conservatory of Music where she won the China National Chamber Music Competition with the Beijing String Quartet. Zhongxian taught for 16 years as professor of violin and chamber music in the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. He has playedwiththeGuangzhouandXinghaiSymphonyOrchestras,and toured with the Quartet Star throughout China, the UK and Europe.

NZ-born Robert Ibell received much of his music training in London.AmemberoftheNZSO,heisanexperiencedchambermusician, plays in contemporary music group Stroma and is a recording artist for RNZ Concert.

After completing her degree in Wellington, Sophia Acheson, principalviolistofOrchestraWellington,studiedinBarcelona,and at the universities of Southern California and Texas.

Xenia Pestova (solo piano) 30 JulyDescribed as “outstanding”, “stunning”, “ravishing” and “remarkably sensuous”, London-based New Zealand pianist Xenia Pestova’s performances and recordings have earned her a reputation as a leading interpreter of uncompromising repertoire of her generation. She has commissioned dozens of new works and collaborated with major innovators in contemporary music, presenting these in concert at major festivals and venues around the world.From2011-2015XeniawastheHeadofPerformanceat

Bangor University, where she founded and directed the highly successfulINTER/actionsFestivalandSymposiumforinteractiveelectronic music. Currently, she is the Director of Performance at the University of Nottingham, artistic co-director of Nottingham ForumforArtisticResearchandTransmissionconcertseries(London).

Her programme balances new and established works.

ArtistsEmma Sayers & Richard Mapp (piano duets) 20 AugustEmma Sayers studied at Victoria University of Wellington and theFerencLisztAcademyofMusicininBudapest.RichardMappstudiedattheUniversityofOtagoandintheUK.Bothtaughtatthe NZSM and have performed widely as soloists and in chamber music.

Especially well known for their piano duet concerts, they are joined in this concert by a quartet of international opera singers – Lisa Harper-Brown (soprano), Maaike Beekman (mezzo), RichardGreager(tenor)andSimonChristie(bass)–forBrahms’Liebeslieder waltzes. The waltzes were an instant, tremendous success and have remained popular ever since their publication in 1870.

Wilma Smith, formerly Concertmaster of the Melbourne SymphonyOrchestraandtheNZSO,wasafoundingmemberofthe NZSQ. Wilma teaches at Melbourne and Monash Universities.

Caroline Henbest studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and theGuildhallSchoolofMusic.FollowingseveralyearsintheMistry String Quartet, Caroline is now Principal Viola with the AustralianChamberOrchestra.

Andrew Leathwick is a pianist and composer who won the New Zealand National Concerto Competition in 2013. Wilma has commissioned Andrew to write a piano quartet especially for this tour.FollowinghergraduationfromtheNZSchoolofMusic,

cellist Alexandra Partridge is studying at the Australian National Acadmey of Music. A devoted chamber musician, Alexandra’s piano trio, the Queensbridge Trio, has been highly successful in competition.
