CAPtAIN’S NOtE

A concerned member wrote in and I share his views on a very pertinent point. He said his concern was about a simple yet truthful matter which most of us, as members, seem to have forgotten or taken for granted.

Ours is a membership club and all members are equal and we are all governed by rules and regulations that make the club a congenial place to pass our time.

There is a Bye-Law which states that members are not allowed to bring their chauffeurs, bodyguards or servants into the members’ precinct, namely the Golfers’ Terrace. Children of members, who are brought in to the Golfers’ Terrace should be controlled and not be allowed to play or run around causing disturbance. Of late, however, this rule is not being strictly observed much to the annoyance of members. May this message serve as a reminder to all members that action may have to be taken to curb this behaviour.

All drivers and bodyguards are kindly requested to stay at the caddy canteen until the bosses are ready to leave and not to be seen hanging around the main club house or sitting in the gazebo at the starters’ hut. Children brought in for food at the Golfers’ Terrace should patronise the Family Terrace or the Poolside Terrace and not be let loose at the Golfers’ Terrace. Let this be a reminder to avoid embarrassment and it is my sincere hope members will heed this call in a spirit of co-operation.

For the safety of members and their vehicles, we implemented the regulation of card swiping at the main entrance. Members, for reasons known only to them, have consistently refused to swipe their cards and even took to ridiculing guards on duty. The guards are only performing their duty and it is unfair to pick on them. May this also serve as a reminder to anyone not adhering to this entry requirement. It was a decision made by the House at large and not a flimsy decision by the Management Committee alone. Please use your card for entry and refrain from making caustic remarks to the guards. Meanwhile the MC is looking into a more convenient mode of entry for members, if at all there is one. Please be patient.

On the golf course, culprits who litter the course, who do not repair divots or rake the bunkers, or who throw cigarette butts on the course will be taken to task by golf marshals. It is getting from bad to worse and absolutely out of control. It is pointless saying out loud that you love your course yet do nothing to show that love. Put your money where your mouth is. This is a golf club for the enjoyment of all members and so why should some members be more equal than others?

It is unfortunate that I have to be rough and tough in this message, much to the dislike of some members who insist I must say nice things as our magazine is read by other clubs. But why cover up our faults with niceties and not face up to the fact that we all share the same responsibility to this club to make it a premier club we always claim it to be? Covering up our problems will not get us anywhere. By exposing our weakness and taking corrective action we gain all round. A club is as good as its members. That’s the long and short of it and each one of us has the bounden duty to uphold the good reputation of the club and make it the second home as many say it is.

Onto the budget approved for the renovation of the Golfers’ Terrace. It has come up short and so the Management Committee will make a request for more funds at the coming AGM as the cost is hovering around the RM3mil mark instead of the RM 2.1mil. approved earlier. Rest assured the Development Committee is doing its best which is why work has yet to start. The new plan will include the renovation of

A Fond Farewell from the Heart

the present Golfers’ Terrace kitchen, the Men & Ladies Toilets at the Golfers’ Terrace. The seating capacity of the Golfers’ Terrace will be increased with the hawkers being shifted to the side of the Golfers’ Terrace outside the Family Terrace which will also be extended sideways. The present uncovered areas fronting the putting greens will be protected by a cable-held glass roof allowing members to sit with a feel of being outdoors.

The present VIP Changing Room will be converted to the F&B Office to ensure that staff are close to their work place. It will include also an alcohol dispensing bar separate from the present soft drink and beverage counter. A lift for the disabled or senior citizens will be incorporated on the outside, near the officials’ car park, leading to the first floor.

The recent EGM held approved the renovation of the Putra Course. Well done to all those who attended and voted for it. Bear in mind that this is a major renovation and time is of the essence. Members please bear with the work once it is started.

This is definitely the last editorial that I am going to write for Berita Subang. It is with a heavy heart that I made the decision not to seek re-election as the Captain of KGNS. If you ask me for the reason, I will not reveal it, but you must have heard all the rumours going around in the club and elsewhere. Members do get a little personal at times and taint your name and reputation for all the wrong reasons. Mahatma Gandhi taught me one virtue, practice PASSIVE RESISTANCE, and I believe in turning the other cheek as well for I know one day what goes round must come around. When the conscience is clear you do not lose sleep and it is pointless to dwell on it unless your heart is filled with malice.

My parting words to members of KGNS will be the same as what I have always said in all the editorials. The Club is yours. Come to the club to make friends, not enemies. Enjoy the facilities of the club and do not look for faults. If you look long enough, you would surely find something wrong for no one is perfect. Love your club. Treat it like a home and do whatever is necessary to keep it clean and beautiful. If you feel you can do better, then volunteer yourself in subcommittee to contribute and get your views heard.

Rules are made for control, so do abide by the rules and bye-laws of the club. As the club is made up of over 5500 members,

changes and procedures are made to suit the majority. You may be among those against certain changes, but it is the majority who rule. Being a good member is not about self. It is thinking about others with contribution and goodwill in your heart that will that make the difference.

On another matter, the KGNS Club Championship saw three weekends of fun and rivalry. Congratulations to Muhammad Imran Shafiq the Junior Champion, Irene Hong the Lady Champion, Liew Jun Loy the Senior Champion and Sunil Abraham the Men’s Champion. Honour also goes to the two Matchplay Champions namely Irene Hong and Imran Ashok Abdullah. The golf course was in tip top condition thanks to the Course Superintendent Encik Shamsul Bahrain and his work force.

The culminating event of the three championships was the Gala Dinner and Dance held a week after the three championships. It was a huge success and attended by more than 200 participants and non-participants. It was a night of fun, comedy and dance with all the prizes being given out that night. Read the article on this in this issue.

The KGNS-Mazda Amateur Ladies Open Championship was also held in May and this tournament is fast becoming popular. The DYMM Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negri Sembilan was gracious enough to attend the prize award ceremony that lasted almost four hours as there was an abundance of prizes and lucky draws for everyone.

On parting, I would like to take this opportunity to say that I have done my best for the club. If along the way I made mistakes, offended a few, created some problems or whatever, I take this instance to offer my apologies. I have learnt a lot from my stint as Captain. And I can proudly walk away knowing that I have done my best and it was all for the club and its members.

Thank you all and see you as an Ordinary Member soon.

The annual Club Championships, which is the Club’s biggest and most prestigious event, was planned well ahead to be played throughout the month of May. Preparations were initiated a couple of months prior by the Captain and the Golf Sub-Committee working closely with the golf department to ensure it would be the finest and most successful event ever hosted.

All preparation for the Championships suddenly came to a halt when the Government of Malaysia declared polling day to be 5 May, which would affect the Senior Club Championship scheduled for the 4 and 5 May. A decision had to be made as to whether the event could be held as scheduled but with a big drop in the number of participants or have a new date as a better option. The Captain, after meeting his Committee and the Golf department, decided to change the dates. The decision proved to be a wise one and this was reflected in the number of participants who signed up.

The Ladies Club Championship and Junior Club Championship took place on the 3–4 May and as the numbers for both these categories were small the tournaments were held simultaneously. Sixteen players signed up for the Junior Club Championship and the field comprised some superior players including the 2011 champion, Muhammad Imran Shafiq, who was in top form.

Imran, playing to a 1 handicap, was tipped to win but there were others of the likes of Affifuddin Abdul Aziz, a 4 handicapper, who could pose a challenge.

On the first day, Affifuddin started well staying close to Imran but a few dropped shots resulted in him posting a 78 to Imran’s 74 being his usual cheery self, was satisfied with his first round performance and looked forward to posting another good score on day two to clinch the Championship yet again.

Day 2 saw Imran firing a three over 75 while Afifuddin scored a 77. Imran’s two-day 149 effort earned him the Junior Club Champion title while Afifuddin, on 155, took second spot. Third was Warda Amira with a two day total of 159. To promote more interest and participation, a 36-hole nett event was organized for the juniors as well. Twelve handicapper Sheik Sulaiman Jamal won the event overcoming Ryan John Fernandez by six shots.

In the Ladies Club Championships, attention was on defending Champion Irene Hong and the 2011 Champion Datin Rahmah Arshad. Both were in top form heading into the Championship. Both players started well but a few club selection errors resulted in Datin Rahmah succumbing to a 11-over 83 while Irene fired a sizzling 77.

A hard fought battle ensued in round two with Datin Rahmah playing brilliantly to and at one stage drew level with Irene. Aided by a few dropped

shots by Datin Rahmah, Irene walked away with the title having posted an 80, despite Datin Rahmah returning a respectable 77. Finishing in third spot was Alyah Tan. In the Nett category Siti Jauharah Lee emerged champion winning by a single shot from Lee Guat Noi and Irene Goh Meng Meng. Irene lost out on second spot on countback.

The Senior Club Championship was held on 11–12 May after a week’s gap. The event attracted a massive 144 participants and due to this, a morning and afternoon session had to be organized. Besides the usual gross and nett categories a Super Senior Nett category was added for those aged 65 and above.

All eyes were on defending Champion Mohd. Chudi Ghazali but a last minute withdrawal from the competition due to an injury opened the door for a string of other hopefuls, which included the 2011 Champion Hj Mahrome Mohamad. Siow Yoon Keong fired an impressive 75 to lead after day one from Hj Mahrome and Liew Jun Loy who both posted 76s. A host of others were left trailing a few shots behind making for day two a very interesting affair.

Siow Yoon Keong began his campaign on a high but faltered as the round progress. Playing alongside Liew Jun Loy and Hj Mahrome, his swing encountered problems midway allowing the duo to pass him on the back nine. In the end, consistent play by Liew ensured victory. Liew’s six-over 78 gave him the title by three shots from Hj. Mahrome. Siow finished with an 84.

In the Senior Nett event, Tai Keat Chai, playing to a 19 handicap, fired rounds of 68 and 69 to ensure victory. His effort was two shots better than Hj Mohd Sofian Ali whose opening round of 62 nett put him in the running for gross honours but a disappointing second round eliminated any such hope. James Liew Ben Poh finished third.

The Super Senior Nett Category saw Kamarulzaman Md Nor emerged as Champion. Kamarulzaman overcame Li Heng Tiong by way of a countback after both players were deadlocked with a two day total of 142. Two shots back and in third spot was Ismail Mahmood.

With the completion of the Junior, Ladies and Senior Championships, the stage was set for the finale of the Men’s Club Championship, which was scheduled for 17-19 May 2013. The event promised to be a classic showdown between past champions, namely Eric Foo and Sunil Abraham, but besides this duo at least a dozen other players stood a great chance as well.

The Putra course was in impeccable condition and ready to test the players. The course was set up long with the greens running at speeds of up to 9.5 on the stimpmeter.

The first day’s play saw Eric Foo setting the tone as he showed he meant business by firing a one-over-par 73. Sunil on the other hand encountered a few hiccups and returned a middling score of 79. Chang Vui Khiong and Victor Lean followed with identical 76s while Sherman Xavier managed 78 heading into day 2.

On day 2 Sunil, who was out to make amends, turned the tables by shooting an even-par 72. Eric on the other hand could only manage a 77 and this certainly made things more interesting with Eric still holding on to a slim 1 shot lead. Chang Vui Khiong and Victor Lean were still in the hunt trailing the leader by three and four shots respectively. Other notables included Idzauuddin Idrus who improved by one stroke on his first day’s score of 79, Zairul Hisham posted a creditable 76 while Gurjeet Singh returned with a 77 gross.

As there was a cut off after round 2, play on the final day was reduced to the top 60 and ties. As flights were arranged in groups of three rather than four, the last flight saw Eric paired with Sunil and Chang while the second last flight consisted of Victor Lean, Kevin Yeap and Idzauuddin. The finale promised to be a spectacular affair with anyone posting a brilliant round standing a great chance to emerge as champion.

Eric continued his momentum by trying to hold on to his slim lead and it looked like he was on track to achieve this goal but a one-over on the front nine against Sunil’s even-par put both players on level terms. Things were all tied, each one matching shot for shot until hole 14 where Eric’s bogey allowed Sunil to lead the tournament for the first time. The killer blow was to take place on the following hole with Sunil birdieing

the 15th and Eric dropping another shot. The gap was now three shots and there was no turning back. Sunil held on, firing an impressive sub-par round of one-under while Eric dropped another two shots on 17 & 18 to finish with a 77.

Sunil was crowned the 2013 Men’s Club Champion winning himself the coveted trophy as well as the Green Jacket. Eric settled for the runner-up spot while Idzauuddin was third with a 75.

The customary KGNS Matchplay Championship for both the Men and Ladies was held the week after the Men’s Club Championship. The first round was played on 25 May 2013 with the top 16 male qualifiers from the Men’s Club Championship and the top eight female qualifiers from the Ladies Club Championship doing battle for their respective coveted trophies. The affair was to last over two weeks with the Ladies finals taking place on 1 June and the Men’s finals the following day.

There were high expectations in the men’s category as the list of qualifiers included the big guns. Everyone was expecting a second showdown between champions, Sunil Abraham and Eric Foo but to everyone’s dismay, this was not to be as Sunil had to withdraw from the Championship due to work commitments.

This opened up the door for Eric but an unsatisfactory round cost him his chances of capturing the Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin Trophy. Eric fell to

Zairul Hisham in the quarter finals, thus clearing the path for a new Champion to be crowned. Zaidon Omar Baki, a surprise qualifier cruised into the semifinals without playing a single shot. He won his first round match by way of a walkover and had his quarter-final match won due to no shows by both opponents. The others to make the semifinals were in-form Idzauudin Idrus and Imran Ashok.

The semifinals saw Imran Ashok taking on Zaidon Omar Baki while the second semifinals saw Zairul Hisham take on Idzauudin. Imran displayed some fine golf to overcome Zaidon 4 and 3 while Zairul continued his winning spree by overcoming Idzauudin in a hard fought affair winning his match 2 up. A fierce contest was in store for the finale but an unforeseen commitment by Zairul Hisham saw him withdraw thus handing Imran Ashok the win and being crowned The KGNS Matchplay Champion for 2013.

The Ladies Matchplay saw a repeat of last year’s finalists. Irene Hong and Datin Rahmah Arshad qualified for the finals, overcoming their opponents easily. In form Irene came into the match all geared up from her recent string of wins. The Ladies Club Champion, who was recently crowned Champion of Champions and who had put on a superb display in the KGNS-MAZDA Ladies Amateur Open, continued her form to capture the coveted Ladies Matchplay Trophy.

Up Lighting and Tree Lighting (Hole 18, Putra Course)

Tree lighting has great aesthetic value. The club agreed to incorporate up-lighting and tree-lighting into the KGNS course landscape at Hole 18, Putra Course to beautify the trees and give the club an added feature everyone can enjoy when they patronize it at night.

Tree lighting uses concealed mercury vapor lights in the higher branches of the tree and it generates a bluish-white light much like moonlight that filters through the leaves and branches and down onto the ground. Up-lighting is basically a powerful spotlight pointing upwards as the name suggests. These stake-mounted fixtures are extremely economical and flexible.

In order to facilitate this exercise approximately 700 meters of cable was laid and the power supply was tapped from the main source at the clubhouse.

Upgrading the Landing Area of Driving Range

This is aimed at repairing depressions and bare patches, raising the height of target greens and fixing the sump and replacing the sump grating with a new one. This will make the surface of landing area even and smooth, easy for mowing and the collection of golf balls. Once the turf is established, the grass will be moved to fairway height and profiled like real fairways. Members will get to enjoy a course-like feel when practicing.

By raising and enlarging the existing target greens, they will seem like the greens on the course itself. These improvements should make practice more realistic.

Uplighting at night.

Storm Hut RefurbishmentUpgrading works are still in progress at the storm huts

at tee-box 4, 15 and 18, and, as visitors can observe, many changes have already been made with the intention of making these huts a comfortable place for golfers to shelter from the rain.

When complete, the huts will have benefited from new water piping, WCs and wash basins. The doors and ceiling will also be changed, along with the installation of new wall and floor tiles in the toilets. The men’s toilets will be widened and everything will benefit from a new coat of paint. Members and their guests are welcome to use the facilities and keep them in ship-shape condition for the enjoyment of all.

RuLES OF GOLF

If you are not able to determine your NPR because that point is within the trunk of a tree or a boundary fence that prevents you from taking the required address position, then you must drop the ball within one club-length of the estimated point. (Decision 24-2b/3.5).The following diagram illustrates examples where the player is unable to determine his NPR from the cart path and will need to estimate this point under Rule 24-2b:

Ground under Repair (GUR) - (Rule 25-1b Abnormal Ground Condition)When taking relief from GUR the player must also determine the nearest NPR. The NPR must not be in a

hazard or on a putting green. The following diagram illustrates the term nearest point of relief in relation to GUR rules for a Right-Handed

Player and for a Left-handed player:

You are not permitted to choose which side of the GUR you will drop the ball, as you must by definition find the NPR that is nearest to the ball, unless there are two equidistant “nearest points of relief”.

Also, as mentioned earlier, the relief does not necessarily mean that you will have a clear shot to the green, or that a tree does not interfere with your lie, stance or the area of your swing.

If your ball lands in GUR and you have obtained the NPR which is in a bush, it is just too bad because you cannot get further relief from the bush.

When the ball lies in casual water within an area defined as Ground Under Repair - (Decision 25-1b/11.5)

The player may take relief from both, but not at the same time. For example the following diagram shows the player taking relief from the casual water and then from the GUR.

BOUNDARYWALL

We all have days when our golf ball ends up on a Cart Path, in Casual Water, on the Wrong Green or on Ground Under Repair. When you face such a problem, you must first determine where your “Nearest Point of Relief” should be to avoid playing from a wrong place and being penalized under the applicable Rule.

It is important to know exactly where the correct point is when you take your free relief, because the rules of golf are specific as to how and where relief can be taken.

Nearest Point of Relief (NPR)NPR is the specific reference point for taking relief

without penalty from interference by an immovable obstruction (Rule 24-2), an abnormal ground condition (Rule 25-1) or a wrong putting green (Rule 25-3).

There is only one precise point on the golf course that qualifies as the NPR, and it is the point on the course nearest to where your ball lies that is not nearer the hole and where it gives you complete relief with no other interference.

If your “nearest point of relief” is in the middle of some bushes then you must drop the ball within one club-length of that point, even though it may be in a worse lie. The Rules also do not guarantee you will have a clear shot to the green from a perfect lie after you have determined your NPR.

Finding Your Nearest Point of Relief Accurately:1. It is recommended you use the club that you would use to

make your next stroke if the obstruction or condition were not there or in your way. Simulate your address position; direction of play and the swing should be towards the green for such a stroke.

2. The space that is free from any interference (no OB, no hazards and no closer to the hole) and the spot where your club is grounded (in your address position) is the NPR.

3. After establishing your NPR mark it (as with a tee) and use any club to measure the one-club relief from the NPR.

Cart Path - (Rule 24-2b Immovable Obstruction)If the ball comes to rest on a cart path consider your available options. i) You may elect to play from the buggy tract ii) If you decide to take relief, by finding your NPR mark

the position of the ball first before lifting it. After your NPR has been determined:i) Measure one club-length (you may use the longest

club in your bag) from your NPR making sure you are no closer to the hole, on a part of the course and clear of the obstruction.

ii) Mark the measured point with a tee and drop your ball within the one-club length.

iii) The ball is back in play, and hit your shot.

LADIES GOLF

6th KGNS-MAZDA Ladies Amateur Open Golf Championship

The 6th edition of the KGNS-Mazda Ladies Amateur Open was hosted recently on 28-30 May 2013 at Kelab Golf Negara Subang’s infamous Putra Course. This popular event, regarded as a favorite amongst lady golfers, again attracted strong participation with 90 players from both local clubs as well as international clubs taking part.

Many had anticipated big names joining in the tournament unfortunately, the big notables were either away or not available due to other commitments. Nevertheless, the field still consisted of some high quality players capable of putting on a good show.

KGNS banked on its recently crowned Ladies Club Champion, Irene Hong, to contest and finish strong in the event. Besides those contending for top honours in the three-day stroke play event, the field also consisted of some who were out just for the exposure or joy of playing in a competitive yet fun filled event.

The first round saw Justin Chen, a local young lady who is currently studying in the US, fired an even-par round despite the course playing long. Justine, who thumps her tee shot about 260 meters, made the ever-demanding Putra Course look easy. The irony of it was that in spite of the hot weather conditions, Justine seemed unaffected. Trailing her by a shot was Hillferah Tan while a host of other players lurked closely behind. KGNS’s Irene Hong started badly and was having difficulty adapting to the green speeds. Her score of 80 placed her in 10th position, trailing Justin by eight shots.

Come Day 2 something had to be done to narrow the gap. The stage seemed set for another low round by the youngsters as the greens speeds were increased to 9.2 and the leader flights were off by 8.30am.

The gallery, consisting of home supporters, cheered Irene on in the hope she would catch up with Justine. This was not to be as Irene and Justine fired identical 75’s. The consolation was that Irene moved up to 4th, closing in on Hilfferah Tan who fired a 77 and Nur Eliana Ariffin whose two-day total kept her one shot clear of Irene.

Another low round on Day 3 held the possibility of giving Irene a top three finish and this was certainly playing on her mind. The cut-off saw the top 40 gross and ties as well as the top 20 nett and ties progress in the tournament. Attentions were on the four players who stood a decent chance of winning. Irene, whose confidence level was boosted by her marvelous round the day before, started on a high and fired a first nine score of 1-over and with Hillferah Tan dropping

an array of shots, Irene surpassed her by Hole 12. Irene was now in second spot closing in on Justine.

Nur Eliana Ariffin was having a horrendous day and wilted. In the end two costly bogeys and a birdie by Hillferah Tan changed things around with Justine maintaining her lead and emerging victorious. Her third round score of 79 was good enough to outdo Hillferah and Irene. Hillferah managed a 78 while Irene settled for both the day’s lowest score of 75.

Fatin Amin, a youngster from KLGCC who is currently playing college golf in the US, whitewashed the entire field in the Nett category. The 14 handicapper’s 26-under-par three-day score was too good with her nearest competitor Siti Nor Jamailah finishing 14-shots behind. When asked about her staggering performance, a fellow member of KLGCC said: “Fatin is a young lady who is dedicated and has improved significantly over the last couple of months. She has put on a brilliant performance.”

Regrettably, there were no winners for the stylish Mazda 3 motor vehicle that was on offer as a hole-in-one prize. Mazda, the title sponsor and the other array of sponsors certainly helped enhance and make the event an overall success.

A grand lunch & prize presentation reception was hosted after the tournament. It was graced by Her Highness Tunku Ampuan Besar Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Aishah Rohani Binti Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud.

Club Championship Gala Dinner & Dance 2013

A Dashing Evening of PizzazzA Gala Dinner & Dance, meticulously planned and

carried out by the Golf Sub-Committee, to mark the successful conclusion of the Annual Club Championships took place on Friday, 24 May 2013. This was a change from the customary pre-tournament dinner organized over the years and the move proved fruitful with more than 300 people attending the event.

Participants, invited guests, sponsors and club officials all turned up in force for the dinner and this included the President, Tengku Dato’ Shamsul Bahrin, Vice-President Mr. Pattis Naidu and Captain, Dr. Ronnie Yeo.

The evening started with a set of mixed tunes from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s before the Captain, Dr. Ronnie Yeo who was also the organizing Chairperson, delivered his Welcome speech. In his key address he took the opportunity to thank all parties – the staff, his sub-committee members, volunteers and officials – for their contributions towards successfully organizing the month long Club Championships. He was pleased with the overall organization and was full of praise for the Putra Course set up, which was in impeccable condition throughout.

A ‘stall concept’ was set-up for diners to select their favourites and the evening progressed with a thrilling performance by stand-up comedian Radakrishnan aka ‘The Black Stallion’. His wit and humour was well received and to compliment his funny side, he also belted out a few numbers to the amazement of all. “You usually get a singer who can be funny, but a funny guy who sings, that’s something new,” was just one of the many comments heard that night.

The President, Vice-President and Captain did the honours during the prize presenting ceremony, rewarding

An exciting evening of entertainment was laid-on and this included live music, dancing, a stand-up comedian, a sumptuous spread of food to suit all tastes and the prize presentation ceremony, that ended with a grand lucky draw.

Such was the appeal of the gathering that eager attendees started arriving as early as 7.00pm and the Dewan Tunku was filled to capacity well before the commencement time of 8.00 p.m.

KGNS SQUASH

Working Hard to play Better The year kicked off with the KGNS squash team

participating in the Tanglin Club 14th International Jumbo Doubles Squash Tournament in Singapore from 24 to 27 January 2013. This event, which the club has been participating since 2008, saw three pairs going all out against international opponents from clubs and countries like Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore and of course Malaysia.

Unfortunately the luck of the draw saw KGNS 1 playing KGNS 3 in the 2nd round of the Plate event, hence one KGNS team was eliminated very early. Nevertheless, the other two teams proceeded to the quarterfinals of the Plate event and before losing to far superior opponents. This was just a little short of our previous best achievement last year where KGNS 2 went all the way to the semi-finals of the Plate event. But, it was a commendable effort from our teams considering that KGNS does not have any jumbo doubles court at the club for training and practice.

KGNS squash, with the support of the Recreation Committee, also hosted a Squash Friendly with the team from Great Eastern on 13 April 2013. Ten players battled it out intensely on a hot sunny day with neither giving an inch to the other. The Great Eastern team included a 14-year-old national junior player who was eventually their best player. He produced a solid performance and clearly proved that youth can get the better of experience.

Our next KGNS squash assignment will be at the 3rd SICC/Marigold International Jumbo Doubles Squash Tournament at Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) held from 21 till 23 June as well as the NSC Squash Doubles Open 2013 on the same weekend.

Hole-In-One AchieversCongratulations!

Our Champions do us Proud at Bukit Jawi

The annual ‘Champion of Champions’ golf tournament organized by Golf Malaysia magazine was played at Bukit Jawi Golf Resort, 12–13 April 2013. The popular amateur event, which invites reigning Club Champions from golf clubs throughout Malaysia and Singapore to participate, brought together some of the region’s best to do battle over two days at Bukit Jawi’s renowned Championship Course.

KGNS has supported this event over the years and this year we fielded our Men’s Club Champion, Eric Foo Hwa Peng and Ladies Champion, Irene Hong. Both players’ games were at their peak heading into the tournament. No representative was sent for the Senior Category as the Club’s Senior Champion, Mohd. Chudi Hj Ghazali was unwell and had to forgo the event this time around.

Preparing himself physically and mentally for the tournament, Eric was all geared up to put on a strong show, unfortunately, however, his putting let him down and he was only able to post a score of 81 for the first round and trail the Clubhouse leader by 7 shots. Despite a 77 on Day 2, Eric could only manage 6th position, six shots off Fong Seng Tat the eventual winner from Kelab Rekreasi Tentera Udara. Eric with his constant positive attitude had this to say, “Bukit Jawi was in superb condition playing long for the tournament but my inability to adapt to their greens cost me the chance to put on a better performance.”

It was certainly a different story in the ladies event. Irene Hong, a past champion in 2005, proved too good, winning the Ladies category by 7 shots. Similar to Eric, Irene too had difficulties on the greens on Day 1 and a lost ball on the

18th hole. An incident that proved costly and resulted in her posting a dismal 80 to trail the first round leader by 2 shots.

Encouraged by her husband’s presence, Irene rallied to play solid shots throughout Day 2 and upon taking the lead from overnight leader Khairun Hanisah, who represented Kota Permai Golf & Country Club, she never looked back. Irene was ecstatic with her win and dedicated it to her hubby.

For her efforts, Irene won herself the coveted ‘Champion of Champions’ Green Jacket and a selection of prizes.

Now in its 8th year, this event initiated by Kelab Golf Negara Subang (KGNS) in 2005 has gained recognition as a worthwhile platform for juniors within the Klang Valley to compete in a challenging manner. For KGNS the aim is to build the interest and confidence of our juniors in hopes that they will develop to be future stars.

Klang Valley Junior Golf Circuit offers 4 events with Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah hosting the first leg on 14 April 2013. The second leg is scheduled to take place at Monterez Golf Club on 25 August 2013, followed by The Royal Selangor Golf Club hosting the third leg on 20 October 2013 and the final leg to be held at KGNS on 1 December 2013. The circuit is partially sponsored by Mazda who has supported the event over the past 4 years.

1st LegAs evidenced at the first leg that attracted a total of 81 players, juniors from

the Klang Valley always look forward to the series. The field was broken down into 6 categories of Strokeplay format. Although it seemed at one stage the weather might pose a threat, it turned out to be a fabulous day of golf with almost perfect weather conditions. As the Club’s rules did not permit parents to accompany their children on course, many were seen trying to catch a glimpse of their kids play on the finishing holes of each nine.

Overall play was certainly commendable with some impressive display of talent in all categories.

The game completed around 6.30pm with the children treated to light refreshments before the certificate and prize presentations.

Inter-Committee Golf GameMini Competition forSub-Committee Members

In appreciation of the hard work and dedication by the various Sub-Committee Members throughout their 2012-2013 term, a fun and friendly Inter-Committee mini golf competition was held on the morning of 12 June.

Using an Individual Stableford format, 19 Sub-Committee Members eagerly competed at Putra Course in perfect weather conditions for the prizes as stake … as well as the all important bragging rights. All went well and by noon the players had returned to lunch and eagerly await the results.

First past the post, with an outstanding 40 Stableford points, was 17 handicap Abdul Majid Md Yusof who represented the Disciplinary Sub Committee. Despite playing 13-over on the front nine, Abdul Majid made amends with a marvelous one-over on the back nine to oust his nearest competitor V. Venugopal, of the House & Maintenance Sub Committee, by two points. Third went to Tung Nai Choy who amassed 37 points and represented the Buggy & Caddy Sub-Committee, while the Chairman of the Course & Grounds Sub-Committee, Faiz Aly Abd Rais, finished on 36 points.
