What is the Berkeley County Schools’Pre-Kindergarten Program? The Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K Program is designed to prepare children for kindergarten by offering a range of experiences based on early learning standards. Pre-K offers a balance of activities, including active and quiet times, largeand small group activities, center times, indoor and outdoor play times, and child-initiated and teacher-planned activities. Berkeley County Pre-K Programs use Creative Curriculum. Infor-mation about Creative Curriculum can be found on the Pre-K website.

Who can participate? To attend Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K, chil-dren must be four years old by June 30 of the school year of enrollment and reside in BerkeleyCounty. Children enrolled in participating child-care centers in Berkeley County who reside inanother West Virginia County may participate if space is available.

What is the adult to student ratio? The classroom maximum is 20 children with a minimum of two (2) adults per class. Each class-room has at least one teacher and one teachingassistant. Classroom ratios may be lower for children withspecial needs.

How do families enroll? Call 304.267.3555 to schedule an enrollment appointment. Families will need to bring the following information to the appointment: child’s state issued birth certificate, social security card, current immunization records, income verification, physical form, dental form, and Pre-K packet which is located on the website. www.berkeleycountyschools.org/domain/7

Where are the Pre-K Programs? Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K Programs are found in 58 classrooms throughout Berkeley County.

Classrooms are located in 27 sites including Berkeley County Schools, Head Start classrooms, and in collaborative partner programs.

Students will be placed in a program and parents will be notified prior to August 1st.

What does it cost?

Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K Program is provid-ed at no cost to families. Breakfast and lunch are served during a school day. Breakfast and lunch charges may apply if the student does not qualify for free or reduced meals. Children enrolled in a school may pack their breakfast or lunch. Children enrolled in childcare centers must follow the guide-lines set forth by the center.

What about transportation?

Families provide transportation to childcare collaboration sites and school sites. Transportation is sometimes provided through Head Start partner-ships and is provided for students who qualify for Pre-K specials needs.

What are the program hours? Pre-K runs Monday through Friday, six (6) hours per day. Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K follows a calendar similar to the Berkeley County Schools’calendar.
