Dalakhani Damsel Tops Fillies... As at many sales this year, fillies with pedigrees werein demand. The day=s second-highest price was600,000 guineas for a first-crop Dalakhani (Ire) filly.Produced by G2 Park Hill S. heroine Delilah (Ire) (Blue-

bird), lot 87 jumped in pricefrom the 75,000gns she hadcost Glidawn Stud as a foal.Charlie Gordon-Watson, buy-ing for Saeed Suhail, outbidthe Aga Khan's French studmanager Georges Rimaudfor her. AI had a fair ideawho I'd be bidding against, and I took it as a nice com-pliment that they were inter-

ested,@ said Gordon-Watson. AShe was an exceptionalfilly and, although the owner doesn't really havebroodmares, he could have one now.@ A first-crop OasisDream (GB) colt out of First (GB) (Highest Honor {Fr})also showed a good pinhook profit. He cost135,000gns as a foal, but attained 440,000gns whenbought by Gordon-Watson for Suhail. Selling as lot140, the colt was consigned by Paul Shanahan'sAshtown House Stud. Localagent Richard O'Gorman outbidCheveley Park Stud's managingdirector Chris Richardson at450,000gns for lot 74, a Pivotal(GB) filly out of Dali's Grey (GB)(Linamix {Fr}). The filly was of-fered by Mary-Ann Penfold'sBugley Stud. AShe's for an exist-ing client, but I can't say anymore than that," O'Gorman commented. Although the122,701gns average rose by 2 percent and the medianof 80,000gns was up by 19 percent, the13,129,000gns turnover was down 7 percent and theclearance rate was 75.4 percent. FROM THE DESK OF...

Bill Oppenheim

REALITY BITES The North American yearling market is pretty straight-forward: Fasig-Tipton July ($35 million), Fasig@Saratoga ($42 million), Keeneland September ($399.8million)--total, about $477 million in the three bell-wether sales. It=s more complicated in Europe (I wastempted to say everything is more complicated in Eu-rope, but, after considering the fallout from the Ameri-can anti-Internet gambling bill, I=m reconsidering myposition on that): we=re now counting eight yearlingsales in five different countries--though, thankfully, there are only two different currencies (neither of themUSD, of course) in play. Going into yesterday=s opening session of Tattersalls=four-day October 1 yearling sale, six of the eight Euro-pean sales had taken place, and all six had seen rises ingross. The two new sales we=re counting, BBAG Baden-Baden and the Italian sale in Milan, were up just margin-ally, with grosses remaining in the i7-million range.Tattersalls Ireland=s Fairyhouse sale was up i2 millionto i10.7 million. The new French sales company=sdebut Deauville sale was up almost i7 million itself; theDoncaster St. Leger sale was up over 5-million guineas(i7.5-million); and, last week, Goffs Million and Sports-man=s sales (the first four days of the five days theysold) were up over i8 million. Since Goffs had been upi23 million the year before, having fallen to a relativelypaltry i31 million in 2004, it meant Goffs= 2006 grossactually more than doubled the corresponding fourdays= gross of just two years before. I think we can saythat the Return of the Sales Stakes and the domesticIrish property market account for that welcome resur-gence.

Bill Oppenheim may be contacted at [email protected] cc TDN management [email protected].

Tattersalls had enjoyed a tremendous October sale in2005. In the first year of the wholly reconstituted Octo-ber 1 sale (four days, alphabetical for all four daysrather than grading each day), 499 yearlings (84 per-cent of the 592 offered) grossed 59,635,000gns, andaveraged 119,509gns. That=s well over $200,000 attoday=s rates. Followed by an equally buoyant October2 sale the following week (up over 50 percent in gross, almost 40 percent in average from 2004), the combinedTattersalls October 1 and 2 grossed over 76.6-milliongns and averaged 67,609gns in 2005. Business was distinctly patchy yesterday, as severalkey indicators showed. If you divide last year=s gross byfour, each day last year averaged 14.9-million guineas, whereas yesterday=s gross was 13,129,000gns--a 12-percent drop from last year=s >daily average gross.=There were 25-percent not-solds yesterday, comparedto 16 percent (for the whole sale) last year; that=s ahefty 9-percent increase. The good news on that frontis that The Judges report today=s horses are markedlybetter than yesterday=s, so we can expect today=s fig-ures to look better against last year=s daily averages of84-percent sold and 14.9-million gross than yesterday=sdid. Here is what is more worrying: the sire showdown.Seven colts bought yesterday by Demi O=Byrne, JohnMagnier, or Horse France sold for an average of187,143 gns; six of the seven were by Sadler=s Wells(2), Danehill Dancer (2), or High Chaparral (2). Theother was by Cheveley Park=s Kyllachy, son of Pivotal.Of the seven yearlings signed for yesterday by JohnFerguson or Dick O=Gorman, three were by CheveleyPark=s Pivotal and one was by Indian Ridge: the threeby Darley stallions, colts by Singspiel, Cape Cross, andDubai Destination, averaged 140,000gns. Consideringthe price of a good colt yesterday was plus-or-minus200,000gns, breeders could be forgiven for wonderingwhether they should be breeding to either camp=s stal-lions. If you had a nice colt by one of them, and thecamp bought the colt, there was a distinct shortage ofcompetition for it; for good colts by >neutral= stallions, everybody was in. It=s pretty wacky.

THE POKER WARS Strictly from the point of view of the domestic U.S.horse racing industry, the NTRA=s Greg Avioli is ada-mant that the anti-internet gambling bill that passedCongress before adjournment last weekend is a goodthing for horse racing. In response to a question, heargues: ANTRA=s overriding concern is to protect ourindustry=s on-line account wagering under the InterstateHorseracing Act, because that is our fastest-growingsource of revenue, and in many ways the lifeblood ofour industry. The legislation not only allows us to con-tinue on-line account wagering, but also shuts off manyillegal competitors (e.g. Internet bookmakers) who webelieve are diverting revenue from the licensed andregulated domestic pari-mutuel industry.@ Emphasis onthat term >domestic,= I think: faced with the difficultiesposed by collecting tax and/or commissions frominternet betting, you can certainly see why the NTRAhas taken the view they have. Narrow the focus, achieve the achievable: that=s a whole lot better thanhaving simulcasting wiped out, too. On the other hand...what is this really about? Thislooks pretty wacky, too--to most Europeans, anyway. ARepublican Congress=s appeal to the anti-gamblingmoralists to try and help cling on to their slim majority?A recent estimate is that there are 30-million pokerplayers in the U.S., and 25 million play for money. I=mnot sure how many of them will be voting Republican.Nor will any investors in the on-line gambling compa-nies whose stock prices plunged 50 percent on theLondon Stock Exchange following Congressional pas-sage.

The oldest native American sire line is that of Himyar,a foal of 1875 and a grandson of Eclipse who wasimported in 1859. This sire line has survived to thepresent day through two branches. One is that of Plau-dit, who is now represented by Holy Bull. The other isthat which comes down through the ABlack Whirlwind,@Domino. The Domino line has had a particularly tenuous existence over the last 100 years or so. Foaled in 1891,Domino was the fastest horse of his day. Unfortu-nately, he died after standing only two seasons at studand left only 19 named foals, seven of which werestakes winners. Domino=s most notable son, theonce-beaten Belmont S. victor Commando, was a greatsuccess at stud, but also died young, siring only four crops. Commando=s best son, the undefeated Colin, was very sub-fertile, getting only 83 foals (11 stakeswinners) in 23 crops. Despite this, it is through Colinthat the Domino line exists today. In the late 1930=sColin=s grandson, Good Goods, was standing at Aprivatetreaty,@ which to all intents and purposes meant free.Bred to Winds Chant, a mare acquired for $90, GoodGoods sired Alsab.

A champion at two, Alsab took the Preakness S. andtwice defeated the previous year=s Triple Crown winner,Whirlaway, at three. At this juncture, we have to note that consistentinbreeding plays a key part in the survival of the Dom-ino line from the time of Good Goods to the presentday. Alsab, the best horse to spring from Colin=s linesince his sire, had Colin and his 3/4-sister, Verdure(dam of Alsab=s broodmare sire, Wildair) 3x3. Alsab=sbest son, Armageddon, added to this formula, as histhird dam, Comixa, was also by Colin, giving the close relations Colin/Verdure 4x4x4. Winner of theChampagne S. at two and the Withers and Peter Pan S.at three, Armageddon=s resume boasted wins overchampions Tom Fool and One Count. Armageddon was not a stellar sire, but did extend theline through the Saratoga Special and Lawrence Realiza-tion winner, Battle Joined. That horse owned two ofour favorite patterns: both his sire, Armageddon, andhis broodmare sire, Revoked, were out of mares by SirGallahad III (giving inbreeding to the broodmare sire ofthe sire), and both were by Domino-line stallions out ofSir Gallahad III mares (a AParallel Pattern@). Incidentally,we can note that despite his tiny number of foals, bythis time--the early 1960=s--the influence of Domino hadso proliferated that Battle Joined had no less than ninecrosses of Domino. It was Battle Joined who sired the first truly out-standing horse from this branch of the male line inrecent years in the shape of Ack Ack. He was anotherhorse with an intense pedigree pattern, having threecrosses of the great mare, Plucky Liege (dam of SirGallahad III, the horse to whom Battle Joined was in-bred), and having the 3/4-relatives Pharos and Sickle5x5x5x4. Ack Ack won four stakes at three, includingthe Arlington Classic and Withers S. It was at the ageof five, however that the Charlie Whittingham-traineedemonstrated his true class and versatility. Quickenough to set a track record at 52 furlongs that year,Ack Ack also stretched out to capture the American H.at nine furlongs, and the Hollywood Gold Cup at 13miles.

CASH INCLUDED, f, 2004

Not surprisingly, his feats that year earned him titlesas champion sprinter and Horse of the Year. Subse-quently, Ack Ack turned out to be a more than usefulsire, getting 55 stakes winners from 580 foals, includ-ing Youth, champion three-year-old colt in France andchampion turf horse in the U.S.; and Broad Brush, whoproved one of the best three-year-olds and handicaphorses of his crop. He earned $2,656,793 with wins inthe GI Wood Memorial S., GI Suburban H., GI SantaAnita H. and GI Meadowlands Cup. Like the first foursires in his male line, Broad Brush also featured notableinbreeding and linebreeding, as he had Turn-to 3x3(including in the broodmare sire of the sire position),and the top-class sisters, Cherokee Rose and How 3x5.At stud, Broad Brush brought the Domino line its firstsires title for more than 65 years when heading the1994 table. Broad Brush=s first shot at extending theDomino line with a stallion son came in the shape of GIBreeder=s Cup Classic winner, Concern. Unfortunately,Concern failed to get a graded winner in his first eightcrops, and is now standing in Oklahoma at a fee of$2,500. Concern was an outcrossed horse, but Broad Brush=ssecond-leading earner, Include, followed in the foot-steps of the other extenders of the male line as he isinbred 4x4x4 to Turn-to. He has the Kentucky Oakswinner Hidden Talent (third dam of Broad Brush) 4x5. A later-developing horse, Include didn=t win in twostarts at three, but took four of five outings the follow-ing year, including the Vincent A. Moscarelli MemorialS. Include enjoyed his best season at four, capturingfive of nine starts, including the GII Massachusetts H.,GII New Orleans H. and GI Pimlico Special. Include was-n=t the same force at five, but he did take the JenningsH. for a second consecutive year, tallying by ninelengths. Retired to Airdrie Stud, Include is represented by hisfirst crop of two-year-olds in 2006. His record wouldnot have encouraged expectations of his runners beingparticularly early, but he=s actually already had 26 start-ers and 11 individual winners. His first stakes winnercame Aug. 20 when Sul Lago took the Northern LightsFuturity at Canderbury Park.

In keeping with the success of the inbreeding theme,

Sul Lago is out of a mare by American Standard, a

grandson of Hidden Talent, so he has Hidden Talent

5x6x4 and her daughter Too Bald 5x3. An even better

result came Sept. 4, when Include=s daughter She=s

Included took third behind Point Ashley and Untouched

Talent in the GI Del Mar Debutante S. Fast forward to

the most recent weekend, when Include became the

first of the freshman sires to get a Grade I winner. His

daughter Cash Included steppped to the front of the GI

Breeders= Cup Juvenile Filly contenders with a decisive

win over Point Ashley in the GI Oak Leaf S.

Cash Included is the third foal of the unraced Chimes

Band mare, Henderson Band, a half-sister to Lord

Flasheart, winner of the G3 Prix de Conde and G2

Prix Hocquart in France, and also graded placed in the

U.S. The second dam, Miss Henderson Co. (Silver

Hawk), was a sister to the Delaware Oaks winner Like a

Hawk (dam of the stakes-winning and Grade-I placed

Like a Hero), and half-sister to By Land By Sea, whose

victories included the GI Apple Blossom H. and GI Mi-

ANOTHER GOOD WEEK FOR BARBAROby Gail Luciani, Director of UPenn Office of Communications

KENNETT SQUARE, PA...KENNETT SQUARE, PA -Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro had another goodweek, and continues to please veterinarians with hisprogress. AHe is doing very, very well,@ said Dr. DeanRichardson, Chief of Surgery. "His appetite and vitalsigns continue to be excellent." Veterinarians plan tochange the colt's right hind leg cast within the nextweek, if needed. Barbaro's left hind hoof remains in a protective bandage, which is changed daily. He stillgoes out to walk and graze each day. While pleasedwith Barbaro's progress, Dr. Richardson is cautiousabout his prognosis. The next update will be postedon Tuesday, Oct. 10, unless there is a significantchange in Barbaro's condition. For more info on Barbaro, please see www.vet.upenn.edu.

A look at Cash Included=s pedigree shows the in-breeding theme continuing, as Cash Included has Hailto Reason 4x5x5, and Hail to Reason=s sire, Turn-to,5x5x5x6x6. Out of interest, Hail to Reason ties in sev-eral of the inbreeding themes which are found in In-clude=s male line, including including multiples of PluckyLiege (duplicated through Sir Gallahad III in BattleJoined, and with a third cross in Ack Ack) and a doubleof Pharos (combined with his 3/4-relative, Sickle, in AckAck). What=s more, both Armageddon--four generationsback in the male line of Include--and the dam of Hail toReason are by Domino-line stallions out of Sir GallahadIII mares. Perhaps a colt with similar inbreeding willappear to allow Include to extend the Domino line an-other generation.

FABRE PONDERS HURRICANE OPTIONS AndreFabre may send Michael Tabor=s Hurricane Run (Ire)(Montjeu {Ire}) to Newmarket for next Saturday=s G1Emirates Airlines Champion S., it was revealed yester-day. Following the four-year-old=s fourth when attempt-ing a repeat success in Sunday=s G1 Prix de l'Arc deTriomphe at Longchamp, Fabre is looking at the 10-furlong contest as an alternative to the GI Breeders=Cup Turf at Churchill Downs Nov. 4. AI was delightedwith Hurricane Run, but he was unlucky,@ Fabre toldRacing Post. AHe was boxed in and could not use hisstride and he lacks acceleration in a slow-run race. I willbe talking to the owners, but the plans are now to gofor either the Champion S. or to the Breeders' Cup.@Fabre also revealed that Baron Georg von Ullmann=sShirocco (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) scoped clean after hisdisappointing effort when last in the autumn show-piece.

HAMOODY DEWHURST-BOUND Peter Chapple-Hyam yesterday confirmed Saleh Al Homaizi & Imad AlSagar=s Hamoody (Johannesburg) will run in next Satur-day=s ,250,000 G1 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket.Successful over six furlongs in the G2 Richmond S. atGoodwood last time Aug. 4, the unbeaten colt willtackle an extra panel in the prestigious contest. AHe's intop form and I couldn't be happier with him,@ Chapple-Hyam said. AThe step up to seven furlongs will certainlysuit him and I wouldn't mind if there was any ease inthe ground. He's one of those horses that goes on anysurface--it all comes the same to him. Hamoody is amiler who may get a mile and a quarter in time. TheDarley Dewhurst will be a very hot race, but I'm lookingforward to it.@
