INTRODUCTION
When I founded Timothy James & Partners in December 1995, I didn’t want to provide the same service that banks, building societies and other financial advisers offered. Instead, my vision has always been to create a company built on strong long term client relationships.
I wanted to offer a professional service founded
on old fashioned values: phones answered by real
people who recognise who you are, consultants
who really want to get to know you and client-
adviser relationships that make you feel valued.
We want to be as important to our clients as they
are to us.
Not everyone has access to Timothy James &
Partners – it is by introduction only. Our main
focus is on the self-employed or business-owner
who has been referred to us by an existing client,
their accountant or solicitor. We only accept new
clients by referral as it’s very important to us to
establish a long-term relationship based on trust
– and that trust is there from the outset when your
accountant, solicitor or friend has experienced the
service and the results of our recommendations.
Often the fee you agree to pay us for providing
financial advice does not produce a tangible
result straight away... It may take years! That’s why
we believe clients who are referred to us already
have faith in our approach.
The term ‘independent financial advice’ means
that we sit on your side of the table when
considering all of your financial options. Our
primary aim is to ensure that we tailor the most
suitable solution for you and your future situation
by gaining an understanding of exactly who you
are and how you ‘tick’.
We have always operated on a client agreed
remuneration basis whereby our fee structure
is agreed by you. We are directly regulated by
the FSA (Financial Services Authority) and pride
ourselves on staying up to date with rapidly
evolving economic events and tax changes. Over
the past two years we have taken on over 500
new clients and invested £1.62m per week of new
savings and investments on their behalf.
Our consultants have never earned a bonus
or commissions, just a well-earned salary. I
have never quite understood how you can be
‘impartial’ whilst receiving a financial incentive to
recommend one solution over another.
At the heart of our philosophy —and success—is a
strong belief that independent financial advice is
all about building long term relationships. We are
not confined to recommending one-off solutions:
we advise on the financial long-term implications
of your life.
On behalf of myself and the team, welcome to
Timothy James & Partners. We look forward to
getting to know you.

OUR SERVICES
This brochure is designed to give you a taste of our unique approach at Timothy James & Partners.
At the heart of what we do is a passionate focus
on the individual – your situation, your needs,
your aims and objectives. It’s this personalised
interaction with our clients that inspires truly
bespoke, long-term financial solutions.
The process starts with a conversation, between
you and one of our experts. We sit down for a
couple of hours and discuss your current situation
and your aspirations for the future.
The services that we can provide are then tailored
to your specific needs. At Timothy James &
Partners, it’s all about you.

GENERAL FINANCIAL TIDY UP & OVERVIEW
One of the main reasons that people come to us is that they require an overview of their current financial situation.
This usually includes a technical analysis of their
existing policies, investments, savings, mortgages
and business finance.
Whatever your objectives and ambitions – and
no matter whether your goals are short-term or
long-term – we’ll map out a financial strategy
that’s designed to get you from where you are
now to where you want to be.

PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS
Most of our clients are introduced to us either by personal recommendation or via our close network of professional associates such as your accountant or solicitor.
We strongly encourage a three-way relationship
which creates a more coherent and structured
approach for our clients. So everyone knows
what is going on and what we are trying to
achieve collectively.

INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT
Before we even begin to look at your specific investment and savings options, we first consider your monthly expenditure and determine how much money you will need to maintain your standard of living both today and when you stop work.
The next step is to consider your tolerance to risk, so that we can understand how you would feel about short-term fluctuations in capital value and income versus long-term gain. We then plan how to achieve a certain income from a portfolio of accumulated assets.
We offer three different investment propositions depending on your objectives and which service
“There are people who have money and people who are rich”

best suits your needs. We constantly interview top performing fund managers and economists to keep ourselves abreast of the opportunities and risks.
A prudent lower risk approach can quite often deliver a decent income above cash returns – whilst the more adventurous client (with a much longer time frame) may want some of their
portfolio facing the capital growth opportunities of overseas shares.
The savings and investments we structure mirror your personal attitude towards risk, and your tolerance for volatility.

PERSONAL & CORPORATE PROTECTION
We always consider what would happen in the event of the premature death of a breadwinner or parent of dependent children.
As many of our clients are self-sufficient with high
liabilities and young children, we would highlight the
necessity of having sufficient critical illness and life
cover to pay off your mortgage, or perhaps cover
the costs of school fees, or maintain your standard
of living requirements.
We also consider what would happen to the shares,
partnership equity or turnover of your business
should a key member of staff become seriously ill
or die.

making other plans”John Lennon

CORPORATE FINANCE
Many of the clients we look after are business-owners and self-employed individuals. So when it comes to their business they may require guidance in some of the following areas:
• Overdraft facilities
• Capital expenditure loans
• Business loans
• Invoice discounting
We consider the last 3 years accounting evidence
in order to tailor commercial financing for the
business, and introduce you to a bank manager we
feel confident can support your company needs -
and whose personality is a good ‘fit’.
Our entrepreneurs really appreciate this individual
tailored service.

PENSION & RETIREMENT PROVISION
One of the key areas of financial advice we give is how you can structure your finances so that you can have the option of stopping work in the future.
Pension contributions are highly tax-efficient but
provision can also come from investment properties,
the sale of a business or a future inheritance.
Many clients come to us having been sold different
products over the years. Where it’s appropriate,
we consider consolidating all of your fragmented
“pots” into one pension solution to achieve one set
of paperwork and a transparent charging structure.
We partner this solution with an up to date investment
portfolio in tune with your current attitude to risk and
the macro economic picture.

MORTGAGES
We understand your finances completely and are ideally placed to advise you on the right mortgage solution for your requirements.
Raising finance for a property purchase or
re-mortgage can be a complex and stressful
experience. Our dedicated mortgage team
will guide you through this process and look
to overcome any possible pitfalls. We have
independent capability to source the most
appropriate mortgage deal and present your
application to the most suitable lender.
We then liaise with the surveyors, lawyers and
estate agents to smoothly manage the process
through to completion.

an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is”

INHERITANCE TAX PLANNING
It is important to maintain your own financial independence for the whole of your life. Nursing and healthcare costs in the future can be expensive.
However, once we have decided how much capital and income you require, recommending gifts, setting up trusts or perhaps insuring the inheritance tax liability may save your family a considerable sum.
We work closely with your lawyers and accountants to make sure your Will reflects your wishes, and is written in a way that will take into consideration inheritance tax mitigation.
We ensure powers of attorney are complete and any trusts, where appropriate, are implemented straight away or on death. We then work with your lawyers to
update and manage this process on an annual basis.

look only to the past or present are certain to
miss the future”John F. Kennedy
