New Bethel Park High School To Open Monday, January 30, 

2012

The first day of school in the new Bethel Park High School will be Monday, January 30, 2012.

The public is invited to attend two events that will give them an opportunity to see the new school:

• Tuesday, January 31 – Gymnasium Dedication at 5:50 PM, followed by a Girls/Boys Basketball JV and Varsity Doubleheader in the Main Gym and South Gym.

• Saturday, February 18 – Dedication, Ribbon Cutting and Community Open House from 10 AM to 2 PM.

NAMS and Franklin Awarded Two Grants

Neil Armstrong Middle School received a Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Grant, which helps students to prioritize healthy eating and physical activity.  Through this grant, students will be able to participate in two programs:

• Plug In and Move – Students will walk indoors or outdoors (weather permitting) every Tuesday and Thursday after lunch between January and March and will keep track of their steps;

• Fuel Up to Play 60 Club – This is an after‐school program where students learn about healthy eating to plan, organize, cook and run taste‐testing events.

Franklin Elementary School received a $5,000 Lowe’s Education Grant to develop a Sensory Play Room in the school.

Memorial Earns Best of Bethel Park Award

Memorial Elementary School received the Best of Bethel Park Award in the Elementary Schools category from the U.S. Commerce Association.

The Best of Local Business Award Program recognizes businesses and schools throughout the country.  Winners are determined based on the information gathered by the USCA and third parties.

Thank You For Supporting The Presents For Preemies Program

Members of the BPHS DECA coordinated a collection of baby items for UPMC Magee’s “Presents for Preemies” Program.

The collection netted 462 baby items, including clothing, blankets, hats, diapers, wipes, pacifiers, books and CDs and $440 cash.

The students packed up the items and delivered everything to Magee’s Neonatal Unit before the holidays.

The program was coordinated by BPHS senior Emma Hartzell.

Orchestra

The Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s Junior High District Orchestra Concert will he held on March 10 at Deer Lakes High School.

IMS Student Council Members Help Police Pals With Food Drive

Members of the Independence Middle School Student Council helped the Bethel Park Police Pals to pack up 200 boxes of food for delivery to needy Bethel Park families during the holidays, as part of the annual Police Pals Food Drive.

Thanks to Grace Brueggeman, Cassidy DeLeo, Connor Fedorek, Jenny Gavett, Ryan Lynch, Macy Hall, Natalie Lalama, Brooke Postler, Thomas Scheidler and Grant Wilson for volunteering to help.

NAMS Charity Carnival Raises Over $1,800 For 

Two Worthy Organizations

This year’s Neil Armstrong Middle School Charity Carnival raised more than $1,800 for two worthy organizations.

The South Hills Interfaith Ministries Food Bank received $1,430 and Achieva received $473.

The students raised this money in one afternoon playing Carnival games.  Thanks to the NAMS PTO for organizing this successful event.

Washington Students Read Over 35,000 Minutes In Two 

Weeks!Washington Elementary students exceeded all their reading goals in the school’s fourth annual Reach for the Stars Read‐A‐Thon.

Principal Fred Pearson set a school‐wide goal of 30,000 minutes over a two week period and the students far exceeded that goal by reading 35,589 minutes.

Star Readers were Ian Cashman, Zach Cashman and Connor O’Neil, who each read more than 1,000 minutes.

Students collected pledges from family and friends for each minute read, with the money collected going to purchase school materials from Usborne Books and PTO‐sponsored programs.

Parents Need To Pre‐Register Their Children For 2012‐2013 Kindergarten

Parents whose children will attend kindergarten in the Bethel Park School District need to Pre‐Register their children as soon as possible.

Pre‐Registration forms are available in any Bethel Park Elementary School or on‐line at http://www.bpsd.org/protected/ArticleView.aspx?iid=5PGAII&dasi=3IGY.

Children who will be age 5 on or before September 1, 2012 are eligible to begin Kindergarten in the fall.

Kindergarten Registration will be held in all Bethel Park Elementary Schools in March.

Parents are asked to Pre‐Register their children at this time to assist the District with planning for the 2012‐2013 school year.

BPHS Diploma Awarded To World War II Veteran Amos 

Nathaniel Shields

At its January 24, 2012 meeting, the Bethel Park Board of School Directors awarded a Bethel Park High School Diploma to World War II Veteran Amos Nathaniel Shields, who served as a Steward’s Mate First Class on the USS Franklin when it was bombed in the Philippines during World War II.

Mr. Shields was a Bethel Park resident when he enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served until 1946.  For his service to his country, he earned the Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Philippines Liberation Ribbon.

The Bethel Park School District will award a BPHS diploma to any veteran who lived in Bethel Park or currently resides in Bethel Park who served in the war between September 15, 1940 and December 31, 1946.  Details are available at: http://www.bpsd.org/Downloads/217%20(2)%20‐%20Attachment%20‐%20Veterans%20of%20World%20War%20II.pdf.
