Snow Days and Lunches

B E V E R L E Y A C R E S B A N N E R

Snow Safety Reminder As part of our fun outdoor recess activities:

√ Students are welcome to build snow people, forts, etc.

with snow.

√ Snow stays on the ground.

X Students are not to break the snow people, forts, etc. of other students. This is not respectful.

X Students should not assume ownership of something that

was built during an earlier recess.

X Students are not to throw snow.

We appreciate your support in reviewing these safety reminders with your

child.

There will be NO Pizza or Pita Lunch if an Inclement Weather “SNOW DAY” falls on a Pizza or Pita day where either is scheduled. If this should occur, a letter will be sent home the following week to notify

families of when the Pizza/Pita Day will be rescheduled.

However, Kids Kitchen DOES deliver lunches on Snow Days. IF your child is not at school on the snow day when Kids Kitchen is scheduled, you have

until 8:00 a.m. to cancel lunch for that day and receive a credit. You will need to call them at 905-944-0210 and leave a voicemail with your ID or Account Number and your

phone number. Unfortunately we do not have the fridge capacity to store the large

number of lunches that are not picked up on a snow day.

On any other Kids Kitchen day if your child is absent, you can cancel by 7:00 a.m. with

Kids Kitchen directly, following the same procedure as above to receive credit. Please be

advised that we will keep a lunch in the fridge in the office until the following day, but after that it will be discarded. As most lunches are packed in foil containers we cannot

heat them for students, but students can bring them home that day.

Recently we have experienced many days of abnormally cold temperatures forcing us to keep students inside. We must remember though that weather changes, and

students are to come to school ready for winter and prepared to be outdoors 20

minutes at morning recess and up to 40 minutes after lunch. We always monitor the weather and, in extreme conditions e.g. wind chill, we will shorten the

recess breaks or keep the students indoors..

Please make sure that your children are dressed properly for our invigorating winter days. It is advisable for students to bring extra pants and socks. A change is often

necessary due to the wet and cold weather of the winter months. To avoid adding to our clothing collection in the Lost and Found, please be sure to label all articles of

clothing.

Bus Safety Procedures

Student Pick up Afterschool

Traffic Congestion

If your child does not take the bus home or does not go to afterschool care, then they are to be picked up promptly at 2:20 p.m. Please be on time as our

teachers are busy supervising busing dismissal, ensuring that all students board

the buses safely. After school supervision is in the back of the school for bused students.

If you plan to pick up your child early from school you must arrive at the school

before 2:00 p.m. Requests after this time will not be honoured as they disrupt our dismissal procedure. Thank you for your assistance.

We continue to review our busing procedures and would like your cooperation in ensuring the safety of our students.

Please ensure that an adult is at the bus stop to receive young students.

Please remind your students who are on a 1st shift bus that they need to get to

their designated bus promptly at dismissal otherwise they might miss their bus.

Please remind students that they must remain on the bus once they are on board.

Please be sure to make changes to your busing arrangements well in advance so

that you do not compromise the safety of your child.

Please note that we do not issue temporary bus passes. Please remember that students are NOT ALLOWED to travel on each others

buses.

Board policy states that busing is to go from home to school and return.

Please review with your child the need to come to the office in the event that s/he

misses the bus and is late. This avoids us making unnecessary and alarming

phone calls home.

B E V E R L E Y A C R E S B A N N E R

Please be reminded that traffic congestion in a school zone is not only an

annoyance, it is a threat to student safety as well as a violation of the by-laws of

the Town of Richmond Hill. Neal Drive is a no-parking, no-stopping zone which

is monitored by the by-law officers of the town and parents who park illegally may

face stiff fines.

Parents are NOT to enter through the middle driveway to drop students

off by the garbage bins. This too is unlawful and very unsafe for other

children.

Information regarding bus cancellations and delays is available from a link on the

York Region District School Board’s website, www.yrdsb.ca, or at

www.schoolbuscity.com. More information from the Board about bus cancellations is available at the end of this Newsletter.

Students entitled to transportation, who remain at home due to bus cancellations

on stormy days, are not required to call in their absence. ONLY those students

who are not entitled to board transportation are required to call should they decide to remain at home on a stormy day.

The Office staff would very much appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Bus Cancellations

Report Cards On February 18, your child will be bringing home their Report Card. This report

will communicate how well students have achieved the overall curriculum expectations for each subject and how they have developed the learning skills and

work habits. Although there are no formal interviews scheduled as these took place in November, you can always contact your child’s teacher if you have any

questions.

Messages and Calls to Students The office continues to receive calls from parents wanting to leave messages for their child

regarding medical appointments, afterschool arrangements, having to talk to child, etc. Please remember to make these arrangements with your child prior to school

whenever possible. We realize that this is not always possible but any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated. To minimize disruption to classes, we will call students down

to pick up things after morning announcements, just prior to morning recess and at lunch,

when classes are not being taught. We make every effort to safeguard instructional time.

Parents dropping off lunches are asked to please inform your child ahead of time to pick up

their lunch from the “lunch bench” outside the main office. Students are not permitted to go outside into the driveway or parking lot to pick up their lunch from your vehicle as this is

“unsafe” and there is no supervision outside at this time.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

MATH TALK: Growth Mindset in Math In general, a growth mindset is the belief that intelligence and ‘smartness’ can also be learned and that the brain grows from experience and effort. The opposite, a fixed mindset, is the idea that you are smart, or you are not. In math, that translates into “some people are good at math, and some are not.” Did you know that praising efforts rather than intelligence or results can impact your child’s ability to persevere in challenges?! The goal is to have children thrive on challenges and see failures, not as a sign of low intelligence, but as a learning opportunity. Brain research tells us that making mistakes actually wires more connections into the brain! When a person has a growth mindset, they accept challenges, see their efforts as worthwhile, and are open to learning from mistakes. Students with a growth mindset achieve at higher levels than those with fixed mindsets. How can you help? Some simple ways:

Adding “yet” when they claim they are “not good at this” (Respond: “You are not good at this yet.”)

Ask questions that focus on their effort and choices and get them to reflect on satisfaction of that effort (e.g. What did you learn today? What mistake did you make that taught you something? What did you try hard at today?)

Model this yourself as you share about your day .

Welcome back after the winter break. There are many things going on right now in our school and many more to come. Here is a glimpse of what’s coming up in February.

The Spirit Committee is planning the Intermediate Dance for Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 13th.

Also, there are a few Spirit Days planned for our school. Historical Characters day, 80’s day, and Disney day are all coming up. We encourage your children to participate in these events and win points

for their Blizzard Cup colour team.

The Grad Committee is still selling popcorn on Wednesdays for $1. In addition to this, the committee is starting our annual “Candy Grams” campaign for Valentine’s Day. They will be sold for $2 each or 3 for $5.

They will be on sale from Friday, February 6th until Wednesday, February 11th. They will be delivered to our

students’ classrooms on Friday, February 13th. The proceeds will go to our Grade 8 Graduation ceremonies and celebration.

The Character Committee is organizing a competition for Intermediate students to create logos for our

production of “Mary Poppins”. Grade 7 and 8 students will vote on the submitted logos later on this month.

The Eco Committee’s “Boomerang Lunch” initiative is off to a great start. Every Wednesday until the end of the school year, BAPS will be running this program. Coming up will be Week 4 of this program.

Students are asked to bring their lunches in reusable/litterless containers. Any packages and waste (even recyclable) is to be taken home by students on “Boomerang Lunch” day. Participants will

get points for their class. The winning class, in each division, with the most points at the end of the year will win a class ice cream party. The Golden Garbage Can will be awarded monthly to the

class with the most litterless lunch points. Congratulations to Mr. Irwin’s class, winners of the

Golden Garbage Can for the month of January. Keep up the good work to help keep BAPS clean!

The Me to We Committee is starting a new campaign called “We Create Change”. This campaign aims to collect over $500 from our school. This campaign be starting soon, so keep an eye out for further details.

With all the upcoming events, we’re sure our school will continue to be a fun and engaging learning

environment for all. Thank you for your support .

Appropriate Use of Technology:

Cell Phones and PDAs

When children are at school, we want them focused on their learning. It is expected that

they will not use cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) at school, unless

directed by their teacher.

Students and families are asked to establish routines for communication that do not involve

the use of cell phones during the day. If students bring phones to school, they may not use

them anywhere on school property between the time of their arrival at school and their

return home. Please be aware the school is not responsible for lost or stolen devices.

As per the minimum standard of the YRDSB’s Student Cell Phone Use, if brought to

school:

Cell phones, pagers and other personal communications devices are to be turned off

and kept out of sight during the school day except with the explicit permission of the

classroom teacher.

Cell phone camera functions are not permitted to be used on school property without

explicit permission from the principal or designate.

Infractions will be dealt with as student discipline, under the Safe and Supportive

Schools Policy and Procedure. Students need a clear understanding that

inappropriate use of technology, including electronic devices such as cell phones,

will result in consequences should the behaviour directly impact the learning

environment.

If you need to get a message to your child, call the office. Please do not send texts or

emails to your child during the school day as you will be in direct violation of the YRDSB

and Beverley Acres Public School Code of Conduct.

Please support your child’s understanding of these policies through discussion and through

your own commitment to upholding the Board and school policy and, as necessary,

contacting the office for communication with your child.

Your support in making our school environment a safe place that values

learning is much appreciated.

School Bus Cancellation Notice

To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled from time to time due to inclement weather, extreme temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students should develop alternate care/transportation arrangements. Since some busing schedules begin by 7:00 a.m., cancellation decisions must be made by 6:00 a.m. to allow time to communicate this message to bus drivers. Cancellation decisions will only be made after thorough consultation with the Safety Officers of school bus companies servicing York Region and are based on several factors including precipitation, air temperature, road conditions and weather forecast. Please note the following;

A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses, vans and taxis will not operate.

School bus routes may be cancelled when severe weather may not be affecting all municipalities in York Region. Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educational programs. Students attending these programs are transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal boundaries. This limits the ability to cancel bus service using a municipality or zone methodology.

Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their children to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled. If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not operate in the afternoon. Therefore students transported to school by parents will require the same transportation home.

Parents, students and school staff are asked to access the following radio and television stations after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus cancellation information: RADIO 590 AM 640 AM 680 AM 860 AM 1010 AM 1050 AM 1540 AM 1580 AM 88.5 FM 89.9 FM 92.5 FM 93.1 FM 94.9 FM 95.9 FM 97.3 FM 98.1 FM 99.1 FM 99.9 FM 101.1 FM 102.1 FM 104.5 FM 100.7 FM 107.1 FM TELEVISION CITY TV CTV Barrie CFTO TV CP24 GLOBAL NEWS A bus cancellation message will also be available at www.schoolbuscity.com and by calling 1-877-330-3001, or by following the YRDSB on twitter.

Please note that school bus charters will not operate when home to school bus service is cancelled.

FOOD BITES January 2015

Happy New Year – Starting New Habits It is out with the old and in with the new! This time of year has many of us planning for and making changes towards healthier well-balanced lifestyles. While goal setting can sometimes seem daunting, make 2015 a success by starting small and setting realistic achievable goals monthly or even weekly. Start your day with breakfast – One of the best changes you can make is properly fueling up your body with high fiber and protein-based foods that will keep you feeling full and energized. Eat a rainbow – Focus on eating a variety of colours within a day and you will no doubt be on your way to better health. Try consuming between 3-4 different coloured fruits and vegetables, remembering to divide up your plate to include 50% vegetables (broccoli, spinach, lettuce, bell peppers), 10% healthy fats (dairy, avocados, nuts), 20% complex carbs (sweet potatoes, whole grains, legumes) and 20% healthy proteins (lean meats, fish, eggs). Switch to smaller plate sizes – The thought of weighing and measuring your foods for each meal can seem overwhelming, so to help transition yourself, try using smaller plates or bowls to help with portion control. Becoming aware of how much we eat, is often half the battle. Up and at it! – Schedule 30 minutes of exercise first thing in the morning to start your day by getting your blood pumping and your metabolism going. This practice 3-4 times a week will do wonders for your fitness and energy levels. Keep your shoes and clothes piled within reach you don’t have to think about what you need when you wake up. Bedtime wind down – Focus on having 10-15 minutes of relaxing time before you get into your evening bedtime routine. Allowing the mind and body to unwind and decompress before it’s time to go get ready for sleep will help ensure a better night’s rest. Turn off any bright lights, cell phones, TVs or computers and make sure the room is dark. Practice mindfulness – Before bed, set aside 10-15 minutes to practice mindfulness – being silent and still, allowing your mind to be present in the moment. Observe how your body feels and any thoughts that come into your head without judging them. This daily practice allows you to focus better, be in charge of your emotions and helps with overall stress reduction. Cut out distractions– Make sure you sit down and turn off any distractions during your meal times. Doing this allows your body to focus on the act of eating and in turn you will become more aware of when you actually start to feel full. Grab a pedometer – One of the easiest ways to track your daily activity and motivate you to get moving is to track your steps. Aim to hit 10,000 steps in a day. Having a pedometer will help you build focus on a visual target. Make Sundays your prep day – Chop all your vegetables and bag them, or even precook a meal or two to help you minimize your time in the kitchen on weeknights when schedules can be tight. Doing this will help you plan healthy meals in advance of a hectic schedule, so you can stay motivated to achieve your healthy goals. Make 2015 your healthiest year yet, starting out by making new healthy habits. Set small goals for yourself by writing down one intention each week and posting it on your fridge. Get your family members involved by sharing in those goals, or posting their own, and be accountable to each other. Focus on supporting and encouraging those around you on a daily basis! Creating a community of supporters can only help everyone achieve a healthier and happy lifestyle.

Beverley Acres Public School

On behalf of this year’s BAPS School Council, we would like to share some useful insights that will help start the New Year off on a positive note and keep us all on track.

"Tips on being on time for School"

Decide what to wear and lay out your clothes the night before. This will give you time to debate over an outfit for the next day.

Prepare the backpack and make lunch in the evening. This will provide extra time in the morning so that you can sit, eat and enjoy a healthy breakfast.

Ensure the homework is done immediately after school. This will avoid rushing around and taxing your brain at six or seven in the morning before school starts.

Finally, the most important reminder is to give yourselves a twenty-minute buffer in the morning! This way you will not be in such a hurry or forget something and it will help get you safely to school on time.

Social Networking Safety: http://socialnetworkingsafety.net

In December, Paul Davis visited BAPS and spoke to both the students and parents

about social networking safety. He delivered an excellent presentation and provided

relevant, valuable information. Ask your child about it and you may be surprised to hear

how much was learned! This was a great opportunity to connect with your child (ren)

and gather information around this increasingly popular topic of online social

networking.

Coming Up: On February 20, Dufflebag theatre will be entertaining the grade 4’s and 5’s with a bilingual presentation of The Three Musketeers. On February 24 and 26, Mike Ford, a Juno-nominated artist, will be performing Canadian history-inspired songs in French for grades 6-8.
