Established in 1980 by chairman and managing director, Jim Milne CBE, Balmoral Group Holdings Ltd is aprivately owned company comprising several operating divisions.

Balmoral Offshore Engineering specialises in subsea buoyancy, flotation, insulation, elastomer and renewableenergy products while Balmoral Tanks provides water and wastewater solutions to the anaerobic digestion, civil andenvironmental engineering sectors. Balmoral Park is the Group’s property development and management arm.

At Group HQ in Aberdeen the company has invested in a pioneering subsea product design and manufacturingfacility that includes laboratory, design engineering, production, project management and testing facilities that areunrivalled in the industry. The £20m+ Balmoral Subsea Test Centre opened its doors in 2018.

Balmoral Tanks designs and produces efusion® and digestore® epoxy coated and concrete tanks respectively for thewater, wastewater and anaerobic digestion markets. A new factory in South Yorkshire, representing a £10m+investment, was commissioned in 2018. The company also operates a highly specialised design and manufacturingbusiness in South Wales that provides hot press GRP and steel sectional tanks as well as cylindrical steel tanks forthe global water storage and fire-fighting sectors.

Balmoral Park Ltd is the company’s property development division. Covering some 18 acres Balmoral Business Parkin Aberdeen is home to three auto dealerships; Audi, Mini and Nissan, and features a 40,500sqft high-specificationoffice pavilion.

These businesses are run by defined management and operations teams that are wholly responsible for their unit’sprofit and loss activity. All are dedicated to the company’s philosophy of innovation and continuous improvement.

Comprising thermoset syntactic, aliphatic amine cold cure, anhydride hotcure capabilities and what is believed to be the industry’s only dedicatedmarine anti-fouling coating line, as well as an advanced polyurethaneelastomer processing facility – supported by macrosphere tumblers, shakers,vacuum chambers and curing ovens – the facility represents a huge stepforward in the way buoyancy and elastomer products are manufactured.

Toolmaking, steel fabrication and machiningFalling within the company’s philosophy of maintaining control of alloperations as far as possible, Newcastle-based rotational mould makingbusiness Kirkdale 2000 Ltd was acquired by Balmoral in 2014.

ManufacturingNow known as Balmoral Newcastle, Kirkdale was recognised within therotomoulding industry as a byword for uncompromising quality and it isBalmoral’s aim to develop and grow this part of the business.

Complementing the existing fabrication facility, Balmoral Newcastle supportsthe company’s growing demand for high quality rotational moulding tools,steel fabrication and machining requirements. The service means that thecompany is in total control of these time-critical processes and doesn’t haveto rely on external suppliers or out-sourcing.

Not only does this ensure delivery schedules are met it also means that costsare kept under very strict control: time and cost savings that ultimatelybenefit customers.

Rotational mouldingBalmoral operates a highly developed in-house rotational moulding facility atGroup HQ in Aberdeen.

This facility produces the shells for many of Balmoral Offshore Engineering’sproducts including distributed buoyancy modules and modular buoyancy elements.

These shells are roto-moulded in medium densitypolyethylene providing a one piece, seamless productwith no structural welds or inherent stresses. Themanufacturing process is automated providing a highquality and consistent product.

This in-house capability affords the company total controlover material selection, dimensional tolerances and,ultimately, project scheduling.

Syntactic production and curingThe combination of hollow glass microspheres and aresin matrix, known as syntactic foam, is central to anybuoyancy manufacturing operation. Balmoral operates afully automated system that provides syntactic materialof a consistent quality which is critical to the manufactureof high performance buoyancy and insulation products.

By implementing hot and cold cure processing,supported by refined hardware to provide control overtemperature, duration and cool-down times, Balmoral

Offshore Engineering has overcome product failure issuessuch as stress, material instability and brittleness that areexperienced by traditional manufacturing operations.

This investment in production technology ensures topquality products that are exceptionally suited to thehostile deepwater environments commonly experiencedby the industry today.

Manufacturing Engineering Group (MEG)The Manufacturing Engineering Group implements leanmanufacturing methodologies and continuousimprovement practices to drive operational excellence.This helps to understand value streams and how, byimproving these, it can improve the company’s service tothe customer.

The MEG takes a systematic approach to all processes inachieving world class performance by efficiently usingtools and equipment, optimising resources and theelimination of process waste and inefficiencies.



Development and test laboratoriesDue to the complexities of bespoke project testing, stringent customer specifications and compliance to global industry standards, Balmoral continually invests instate-of-the-art laboratory test equipment to ensure these requirements are satisfied. This programme of investment ensures the company retains total controlover time schedules, test conditions and methodologies used to fulfil customer requirements.

Balmoral’s technical team has taken occupation of the company’s new custom designed and purpose built laboratories at company HQ in Aberdeen. The new facility housesa state-of-the-art temperature and humidity controlled laboratory that is fully furnished with a wealth of chemical, thermal, hydrostatic and mechanical test equipment.

Accredited, cost effective, safe solutionsBalmoral boasts an extensive track record in some of the most onerous operating conditions in the world. As theindustry continues its journey into deeper waters the company differentiates itself by providing fully accredited, safeand highly cost effective design and manufacturing solutions.

In March 2013 the American Petroleum Institute (API) released specifications 17L1 for flexible pipe ancillary equipmentand 17L2 recommended practice for flexible pipe ancillary equipment.

The API 17L specification stipulates the minimum requirements for the design, material selection, manufacture,documentation, testing, marking and packaging of flexible pipe ancillary equipment including buoyancy modules,clamping systems, bend stiffeners and restrictors.

The API standard covers all materials, design, testing and manufacturing methodologies used in the system to provideuplift of up to 4.65Te at water depths to 10,000ft.

To achieve Bureau Veritas approval in line with API 17L standards Balmoral successfully completed an 11 monthdevelopment programme that consisted of four phases: quality audit; design review; material qualification; inspectionand testing.

Clients should enquire whether or not their supplier is accredited in line with API standards to ensure the optimumproducts and services for their project are provided.


SURF products

Distributed buoyancyThe use of flexible pipe in offshore oil and gas production is usually groupedinto two categories; static and dynamic. Flexible pipe and umbilicals in someenvironments require buoyancy modules to reduce topside or tension loads orto achieve a particular configuration. Fully accredited by Bureau Veritas to API17L standards, BOE’s distributed buoyancy system normally consists of twoparts; the buoyancy and clamping system. The buoyancy elements are suppliedas two halves with a recess designed to accept the clamp. A further form ofdistributed buoyancy is used for buckle mitigation purposes.

Bend restrictorsGenerally fitted in static load applications to prevent damage where excessivebending may occur, bend restrictors fit around the flowline or umbilical toensure the minimum bend radius is never exceeded. Balmoral bend restrictorsare fully accredited by Bureau Veritas to API 17L standards.

Boltless bend restrictorBalmoral has extended its bend restrictor range to include a genuinely boltlessrestrictor (patent pending) – the first on the market. This boltless solution


means that installation times can be slashed offering huge savings inoffshore installation costs.

Although there are products on the market that claim to be boltless, none ofthem actually are. In the case of Balmoral’s boltless restrictor, industryleading performance is retained while offering significantly reducedinstallation time and costs.

Ensuring the new restrictor’s suitability for global deployment, designmethodologies and material selection are fully compliant to API 17L 1&2standards.

Bend stiffenersDesigned by Balmoral’s engineering team using advanced FEA andassociated software, the company’s dynamic, static and split bend stiffeners provide support to cables or flowlines as they emerge fromstructures. The company’s dynamic stiffeners gained independentverification by Lloyds Register in 2012 and are fully accredited by BureauVeritas to API 17L standards.


VIV strakesBOE strakes are available in marinegrade polyurethane elastomer orpolyethylene and can be supplied toaccommodate various installationmethods including onshore,shipboard, stinger or diver/ROV retrofitting. They are supplied asinterlocking two or three pieceshells which are secured by ametallic strapping system. Anti-fouling versions are also available.


J-tube sealsJ-tube seals are used to provide sealing and corrosion protection between flexiblerisers and the so called J- or I-tubes found on offshore installations.

Balmoral Offshore Engineering provides diverless and diver-installed seals that areavailable in a range of sizes for pre- or retrofitting; all manufactured to API 17Lstandards.

Duraguard™ cable and flowline protectionDuraguard is used to protect subsea cables, flexible jumpers, flexible flowlines andriser touchdown zones although many other applications have been identified.

It provides a cost effective localised impact and abrasion protection system and issupplied as pairs of interlocking shells secured around the core product usingcircumferential straps.

Duraguard HD™For projects which demand protection with added ballast, Duraguard HD (HighDensity) provides much more than straightforward abrasion and impactresistance.

Heavy filler materials are added to the Duraguard mix to increase density andoverall weight. The ballast provided gives extra on-bottom stability while theadded mass improves dynamic response thus reducing the risk of clashing.

Duramat™ cable and flowline protectionMoulded in marine grade polyurethane elastomer, Duramat provides droppedobject impact and abrasion protection to seabed umbilicals, flowlines andpipelines.

Balmoral CuNiClad® marine anti fouling systemMarine biofouling is an issue which must be seriously considered when installingany structure or launching any vehicle into an aquatic environment.

Balmoral CuNiClad is based upon the use of marine grade 90:10 copper-nickelalloy, with the major advantage of being a spray-applied system. It is thereforeideally suited for application to complex shapes.

Saddles, centralisers, spacersTo help with varying offshore operations, including pipeline installation andlaying, BOE designs and produces a range of auxiliary products includingsaddles, centralisers and spacers.

Flange protectorsDesigned to protect and insulate subsea pipeline and floating hose flangeconnections, BOE flange protectors operate in depths exceeding 3000m and areformed using two half-shells. Lightweight and ROV friendly, these productsbenefit from longitudinal and radial seals which restrict seawater ingressbetween the covers.

Providing a range of surface/subsurface products including one-piece,modular, 'off-the-shelf' and ROV/AUV buoyancy, with a wide variety offittings and accessories, Balmoral Offshore Engineering offers acomprehensive range of marine solutions.

ROV/AUV buoyancyWith advances in deepwater technology the need for remote intervention aspart of the field installation has seen major increases in the number ofdeepwater remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles. As thecomplexity of these vehicles evolves the demand for lower density, highperformance composites buoyancy systems has increased.

This is an area where Balmoral has made significant technological advances. Theuse of conventional cast composite buoyancy packs still has many commercialbenefits for large vehicles used for trenching of pipelines or submarine cables.However, for deep dive work class ROVs, operating beyond 2000msw, theperformance benefits of Balmoral’s LDF series becomes significant.

This low density, pure foam composite provides the operator an opportunity to


increase the uplift (buoyancy) of the vehicle thereby resulting in increasedpayload capacity. It also provides an opportunity to reduce the size of thebuoyancy modules thereby reducing the overall weight and dimensions of the vehicle.

Balmoral LDF buoyancy is available from stock for operations to depths of7000msw.

FlexLink™ umbilical buoyancyFlexlink was developed to meet the needs of large, tracked, trenching vehiclesthat operate on the sea bed.

To prevent these vehicles damaging their control lines, FlexLink is installed at thetether point to provide a continuous, articulate buoyant section above thevehicle, thereby ensuring the umbilical remains out of the vehicle work zone atall times.

FlexLink is used as a permanent installation which is designed to pass throughthe sheave wheels of launch and recovery systems (LARS).

Modular surface/subsurface buoyancyBalmoral has developed its range of modular subsurface buoyancy products toinclude standardised “off-the-shelf” solutions.

Offering a cost effective and rapid response to immediate buoyancyrequirements, the new buoys complement the company’s existing range ofproducts suitable for use from 0-3000msw.

These modules incorporate ‘flats’ which provide easier handling and deckstorage whilst simultaneously improving robustness.

We believe these are the most user-friendly subsurface buoys on the market.

Anchor pendant buoysBalmoral Offshore Engineering offers a range of surface buoyancy that includesmooring buoys, anchor pendant buoys, support buoys, chain-through buoysand pick-up buoys which are extremely robust and suitable for the most severeenvironments.

One-piece subsurface buoyancyBalmoral provides a range of one-piece subsurface buoys, suitable for service to3000msw, which have a proven track record on subsea projects undertaken bymarine installation contractors.

Mooring buoysThe Balmoral mooring buoy range is unique and was designed and developedin-house.

Specials are available and are usually based on a standard modularconstruction incorporating platforms, ladders, solar panels, electronicmonitoring and lighting equipment.

Oceanus floatsBalmoral Offshore Engineering’s design team created the Oceanus float toprovide a range of standard, readily available, buoyancy units suitable for allocean depths.

Umbilical floatsBOE provides a range of floats to suit most control umbilicals. These floatscomprise a pair of symmetrical half shells which are profiled to permit the lineto flex within its specified bend radius.

Buoyancy repairsIt is vital that repair and refurbishment is carried out by fully qualified teams thatunderstand the materials, procedures and environments to which marinebuoyancy is exposed. Balmoral provides such a service on a worldwide basis.



Drilling products

Durafloat RIS™ and Durafloat Superlite™ drilling riser buoyancyIn response to the increased demands placed on riser buoyancy in ever-deeper waters, BOE’s technical team developed a series of specialiseddrilling riser buoyancy systems comprising a high impact protective skinand residual integrity system.

Durafloat RIS (Residual Integrity System) minimises the risk of cracking andfracture while delivering high performance uplift. This development is seenas a major step forward for the industry and its contribution to safety andperformance should not be underestimated.

Durafloat Superlite and Durafloat Superlite-X were developed to operate atdepths to 15,000ft while incurring no additional costs to the end user.


Riser protectionTo minimise the risk of damage during operations Balmoral OffshoreEngineering provides a range of riser impact protection systems.

Moulded in tough, abrasion resistant polyethylene to the same geometry asdrill riser buoyancy modules, and incorporating an integrated fasteningsystem, this product is engineered to provide maximum impact andabrasion protection whilst at the same time being light and simple tohandle.

The Balmoral riser impact protection system allows the bare joint to bestored in the same stack as buoyant riser joints while minimising the chanceof operational damage during deployment and recovery.


Pin and box end protectionWhen transporting and storing drill riser joints, pin and box end connectors areexposed to potential damage. To prevent unnecessary and expensive repairwork to these critical areas, Balmoral Offshore Engineering provides a range oflightweight, high impact and abrasion resistant elastomer protectors.

Riser clampsPolymer riser clamps are now recognised as the industry standard, whencompared to older steel models, offering significant weight reduction benefitsin deep and ultra-deepwater environments.

Maintaining its policy of product innovation and continuous improvement,Balmoral Offshore Engineering optimised its riser clamp design in terms offunctionality, handling and ease of attachment to the riser string.

The design optimisation process resulted in a clamp that is extremely robust,impact resistant and custom designed to suit project requirements.


Subsea insulation

Balmoral Subsea Insulation, a division of Balmoral Comtec Ltd, was launched in2017 to complement the company’s existing shroud and doghouse insulationproduct lines. Significant investment was made in new facilities to build on theexperience gained through the company’s previous insulation and pipe coatingbusiness, Balmoral Webco, which was operational 1990-1997.

Field or factory applicationBalmoral designed and created specialised field application units (FAU) that areeffectively containerised ‘factory in a box’ solutions designed for globaldeployment. The FAU’s are fully autonomous with minimal reliance on yard supportfor onshore, site-based coatings. They are equipped to apply Balmoral Elastothermsystems to meet and exceed client insulation and flow assurance requirements.

Underpinned by the company’s industry-leading reputation for customer focusand project governance, Balmoral’s highly skilled and experienced supervisoryand application teams are trained to ensure a consistently high level of customerservice is delivered. This ensures professional, controlled and on-time completionof insulation activities at client locations around the world.


Design and testingBalmoral Subsea Insulation draws on the company’s extensive engineeringexperience and comprehensive R&D programme to offer FEA or CFDanalysis of project design parameters to ultimately provide the most costeffective coating solutions. Early dialogue with clients means thatoptimum fit for purpose, through life, solutions can be identified andimplemented.

New, state of the art, technical and subsea test centre facilities offerextensive laboratory and test capabilities to ensure all materials meetstringent industry requirements, including ISO 12736.

Applications and advantagesBalmoral Elastotherm insulation systems are suitable for use both as cast-in place ‘wet’ insulation on ‘Christmas trees’, manifolds, jumpers and spoolpieces, and also in modular systems such as connectors and flange covers.

Riser tower buoyancy systems for ultra-deepwater fieldsWater depths, seabed conditions, high pressures and high temperatures areall factors to be considered when designing systems for the extraction ofhydrocarbons in deep and ultra-deepwater fields.

Ultra-deepwater fields have attracted much attention in recent years and havegenerated a range of riser solutions to transport the produced hydrocarbonfluids to the surface processing facility. In some cases these solutions reflect theparticular expertise of the main contractor while project-specific requirementsdominate in other scenarios.

Established solutions include steel catenary risers, flexible flowlines in wave orMWA configuration, single leg top-tension risers and hybrid riser towers. Thelast-named refers to multiple risers grouped around a single core pipe wherethe entire assembly is supported in vertical orientation by a massive buoyancyassembly. Due to operational depths going to some 2000msw the majority ofsolutions require buoyancy to provide hydrodynamic stability and/or risertension reduction.

With the particular field configurations, depths of reservoirs and relativelybenign sea states found offshore West Africa, the hybrid riser tower (HRT)has assumed a dominant position. With the proven success of HRTs inmajor West African projects the same solution offers significant potentialfor other deepwater projects both there and elsewhere in the world.

The hybrid riser tower typically comprises 4-12 individual risers groupedaround a central core pipe anchored to the seabed and supported by amassive air can at the top. Further to this tower-top air can, buoyancy isinstalled along the length of the bundle and on occasion at the upperand lower riser tower assemblies – URTA and LRTA respectively.

The primary purpose of the bundle, URTA and LRTA buoyancy systems isto facilitate surface tow-out of the bundle, however the same buoyancyalso contributes to the stability of the vertical HRT when in service.

Alternatively,the diameter can be increased and height reduced if required.

Tank sealingTwo types of tank sealant are offered, liner and mastic; the mostcommon being the liner sealed design. The inside of the tank shellis lined with a synthetic EPDM, reinforced PVC or butyl rubberliner. The purpose of the liner is to separate the water from thetank shell. The concrete base and shell are also lined with geo-textile matting to provide additional protection against damageto the liner.

efusion® is the brand name for Balmoral Tanks’ in-house steel panelepoxy coating system. This fusion bonded epoxy treatment provides ahighly resistant, highly durable coating to the tank panels.

The epoxy is electro-statically applied and thermally bonded in a two-coatprocess. This ensures all efusion panels have the most durable and resistantcoating possible and all products are tested in line with the company’squality standards prior to delivery.

efusion is tested to similar stringent standards as glass coated steel andmeets or exceeds the following internationally comparable coatingrequirements:

Hot press GRP sectional water storage tanksWith an unrivalled reputation for quality and service Balmoral offers GRPsectional tanks, which can be pre-insulated, ranging from 1m3-1000m3 litrescapacity and erected to a height of 4m in 1m and 0.5m increments.

These tanks carry WRAS approval for potable water storage and LPCB approvalfor fixed fire fighting sprinkler systems. All panels are fully tested to resistpressures in excess of six times their working pressure.

DesignThe design of each sectional tank panel is modelled using FEA software. Thisallows fine detail to be thoroughly investigated and improved beforeproceeding to mouldmaking and production.

MaterialsAll materials used in the production and assembly of Balmoral GRP tanks arerigorously tested for potable water compatibility. This includes long termmaterial performance and mechanical properties, non-metallic components,adhesives, etc. Combined, these analyses form the basis of the company’sextensive QC procedures.

Manufacturing processBalmoral sectional tank panels are hot press moulded in sheet mouldedcompound (SMC) using isophthalic unsaturated polyester resins andelectrical glassfibre reinforcement.

The panels are moulded at temperatures up to 150°C under strict qualitycontrol disciplines. The process results in strong, consistent panels whichare fully cured, dimensionally accurate with sharply defined profiles andsmooth surfaces on both faces.

Drilling and finishing of the panels is undertaken in a purpose builtcontrolled area, where high technology automated drilling equipment isused to complete production to exacting tolerance levels.

Thermal insulationBalmoral sectional tanks use expanded polystyrene (EPS) materials intheir thermally insulated panels. This is made using a pentane expansionagent which is CFC and HCFC free and can be recycled by melting downand reforming.

Balmoral hot pressed steel sectional tanks with capacities of up to1300m3 have been installed worldwide in water supply projects, thefood and processing industries, hotels, railways, hospitals and theutilities sectors. Using proven technology, Balmoral steel sectionaltanks and towers have an outstanding track record.

The development of Balmoral Tanks’ EPDM rubber sealing system,combined with the application of various coatings suitable for thestorage of potable water, has made safe storage of this valuableresource even more secure.

Tanks can be provided for ground level installation or elevated on steelstructures that are specifically designed and fabricated by Balmoral.

General constructionBalmoral pressed steel tanks are bolted mild steel sectional water storage containers.Plates are hot-pressed in the company’s South Wales factory to BS1564:1975 Type 1.The panels are manufactured in 1m2 and 1.22m2 (4ft2) sizes with thicknesses rangingfrom 4-6mm depending on tank depth and use. Half plates are available.

Tank plates are bolted together using an approved sealant. For ease of access tobolts, tanks are supplied with external flanges unless customers specify otherwise.

To support pressures exerted by the tank’s contents, the sides of all tanks at thejunction of four plates are supported by rolled steel angle stays attached to cleats ofequal strength bolted to tank plates. The pattern of internal stays depends on tanksize and varies between horizontal, vertical and diagonal.
