HIGH SCHOOL DAY

COLLEGE FIELD

BOWLING GREEN, OHIO

November 10, 1934

The loyal support of the businessmen of Bowling Green last year made this style of program possible and through it hundreds of high school athletes were introduced to athletic activities in Bowling Green State College. In the confident belief that these programs are of great value in advertising the college, the publicity committee offers this, the fourth of a set of 1934 programs.

THE OFFICIAL PROGRAM Is published and distributed at home games by the Department of Publicity of the College-Com- munity Organization. Revenues from the Official Football Program are used to publish this program and are utilized for no other purposes. The Department of Publicity expresses its ap- preciation of the wholehearted co-operation of everyone who helped to make this program possible.

BOWLING GREEN COACHING STAFF

For many years Bowling Green and Ohio Northern university have been meeting in football and basketball contests, thus developing a tradit- ional rivalry between the Falcons and Bears, which we, today, are glad to continue.

Our pleasure is even greater on this occasion, since we feel honored in being the final Ohio Conference opponent of a team which comes to this campus with its goal undefiled, resulting in it being undefeated and untied.

Such distinction seldom is attained by a college team and we con- gratulate our neighboring friends from Ada upon their success.

Bowling Green State expects to meet a team which will carry on the Ohio Northern traditions which we have so greatly admired in the past under the direction of Messrs. Clyde and Harris Lamb.

Ohio Northern; we greet you!

P. E. Landis, Assistant Coach

OHIO NORTHERN COACHING STAFF

We have always enjoyed having our athletic teams meet Bowling Green. Regardless of the outcome of previous games we can always ex- pect to meet a team of stubborn resistance at Bowling Green with the traditional Bowling Green spirit.

It is indeed a pleasure to carry on athletic relations with such men as Mr. Steller and Mr. Landis. We know that we can expect the highest sportsmanship from their teams.

The Orange and Brown

Home of aspiring souls, Our College stands On fertile plains where once roamed Indian bands, Where gorgeous sunsets tint the bending sky; Where pioneers strong in dust now lie; Keep thou the flame enkindled at their shrine Our hearts in beauty to entwine.

Above unfurled, Our Standard staunch and true, Orange where the glow of sunset fades to blue, Brown for the faith of youth in Country dear Who gather in thy halls each year, Seeking thy truth to aid in fortune's quest Calmly distilling what is best.

Who yet can sing thy honor and thy praise? Whose pen can write? whose voice in triumph raise? Wisdom and culture, purity of aim— What future glories crown thy name! The thousands come and gone will honor thee With thee in faith the years will be.

Teach us, State College, to be loyal and brave, To search for truth and ne'er to be Time's slave; To set a light in this dark age of doubt, Put ignorance and fear to rout: Live on and on, unshackled and unblamed; Honored, and cherished and acclaimed.

Prof. J. W. Carmichael

Bowling Green State college welcomes to the campus today many high school students who are here to help celebrate "High School Day" and it affords the school pleasure indeed to entertain them and to give them an opportunity to inspect the campus and it many fine buildings.

Established in 1910 and started in 1914, the college is operated by the State of Ohio to give the people of the northwestern Ohio equal edu- cational opportunities with those of other parts of the country.

For that reason no tuition is charged and institutional fees con- sist only of nominal registration and laboratory assessments.

Northwestern Ohio can look upon the local campus with pride. No other physical plant is any better. The campus of 105 acres abounds with beautiful, well constructed and equipped, modern school buildings. There are nine buildings on the campus as follows: Administration, Practical Arts, Science, Physical Education, Library, Training School, Williams Hall (dorm), Shatzel Hall (dorm) and the Heating plant. The outlay is estimated at over $2,225,000.

The institution is organized into two coordinate units, a College of Liberal Arts and a College of Education.

Since it's beginning in 1914, Bowling Green State college has been an institution of opportunity for students who have been unable to go to colleges or universities where expenses are high. It is estimated that the average expenditure of the Bowling Green student need not be more than $250 per year. Even this low cost can be materially reduced by students preparing their own meals and there are plenty of room available with kitchen privileges for those who desire to do so.

Courses are offered in special subjects such as Music, Coaching, Home Economics, Commercial education, and the regular collegiate cur- riculum. Careful selection of courses in the Liberal Arts college gives students an opportunity for pre-medics, pre-law, pre-engineering, and pre-journalism.

A college catalogue can be secured at the Registrar's Office or will be mailed to those who write to him asking for a copy.

B, G.'s Physical Education Courses Under the new state law regarding the teaching of physical education

and the coaching of athletics in Ohio, all coaches and physical education teachers in the public schools will be required to be credited with a "major" or "minor" in the course by September 1935 or they will not be permitt- ed to continue teaching and coaching such courses.

There are eight colleges and universities in Ohio granting both a major and a minor in physical education, Bowling Green State college be- ing one of them. Forty hours of such training are offered here. The minimum for a minor is sixteen hours.

The appeal to athletes to coach is strong and the fine courses for men are finding an increased enrollment of men enjoying preparation for future coaching jobs. The department is growing yearly and summer courses are also finding a popular attendance from athletes of other colleges.

FRESHMAN FOOTBALL A small, but none-the-less fine Freshman squad has been reporting

daily this fall to Coach E. E. Andrews, and on occasions have been a cause of much worry to tht defense of the B. G. Varsity in scrimmage. Many of them are certain to be found on the varsity next year if they are back and have made the scholastic hurdle. _ ....

The squad of twenty-two men furnishes a number of experienced high school gridders. In the line are Roger Clemens, 230 pound tackle from Defiance; Bob Mustain, 160 pound guard, from Bowling Green; Pharon Heckler, 170 pound tackle, from Napoleon; Ken Snyder, 186 pound guard, from Continental; John Frontz, 165 pound end, from Piqua.

Other linemen are Dale Kuhlman, 160, Pemberville, guard; Jason Moser 150, Wren, guard; Dwight Van Atta, 174, Richwood, end; Eugene Mann, 170, Holgate, guard; Charles Murry, 175, Richwood, tackle; Glenn Smith, 178, Bloomdale, end; Fredrick Graf, 151, B. G., end; James Kiger, 155, B. G., guard; Howard Burdick, 240, Risingsun, center; Elwood Reed, 175^ B. G., guard. , iM , ......

Several of the boys in the backfield list look like real varsity timber and three of them will make steller timber and possible letter winners next fall. Harland Kinney, 155 pound halfback,of Wauseon; Robert Young, 155 pound quarterback, of Sandusky, and Walter Schmdler, 140 pound halfback from Defiance, have made fine showings m scrimmages.

Other backs are Earl Canterbury, 150, Portage; Ken Edwards, 171, Wayne; Verlin Johnson, 150, Oakwood; John Rinehart, 168, McComb; Ray Carter, 140, Fremont.

Intramural Activities An extensive program of intramural athletics is operated by the

Men's Physical Education Department throughout the year, resulting in active participation in various sports by several hundred men. Frater- nities, houses, classes and organizations participate in speedball, basket- ball, handball, tennis, volleyball, track, horseshoe, ping-pong, baseball and the usual other sports tournaments each year.

Activities are constantly finding men relaxing in wholesome games in the fine Physical Education Building with its spacious basketball court and many forms of gymnasium apparati. Wrestling and boxing are in- door sports which attract much interest in the winter.

The yearly increase in the number of men students finds an equal increase in the scope of intramural activities.
