which means harbor ("tsu") and wave ("nami"). A tsunami is a series of waves generated whenwater in a lake or a sea is rapidly displaced on amassive scale.

A tsunami can be generated when the sea floorabruptly deforms and vertically displaces the

overlying water. Such large vertical movementsof the earth's crust can occur at plateboundaries.

Subduction of earthquakes is particularlyeffective in generating tsunami, and occurswhere denser oceanic plates slip undercontinental plates.

As the displaced water mass moves under theinfluence of gravity to regain its equilibriummass, it radiates across the ocean like ripples ona pond.

 ABORTION, A CONTROVERTIAL ISSUE

For years, abortion has been an extremelycontroversial subject. One important aspect of

the controversy is whether a woman should bepermitted by law to have an abortion and, if so,under what circumstances. Another is whether, and to what extent laws should protect theunborn. People who wish to legally limit or

forbid abortions describe themselves as pro–life. Those who believe that a woman should havethe right to have an abortion may refer tothemselves as pro–choice.

Arguments against abortion are based on thebelief that an abortion is the unjustified killing of an unborn child. Most people who opposeabortion believe that human life begins when a

sperm fertilizes an egg. Another argumentagainst abortion is that laws allowing it ondemand will increase irresponsible pregnanciesand lead to disrespect for human life. TheRoman Catholic Church is a chief opponent of abortion. Conservative branches of otherreligions also oppose abortion.

Many people approve of abortion under certaincircumstance. Some approve of abortion if awoman’s life or health is endangered by herpregnancy. Others recommend abortion whenthere is danger that the child will be born with aserious mental or physical defect. They alsoapprove of abortion when pregnancy has

resulted from rape or incest. Many people who think that a woman shouldhave the right to choose to have an abortiondistinguish between human life and personhood. They argue that personhood implies both thecapacity for self-conscious thought andacceptance as a member of a social community. These people believe a fetus is not a person andis thus not entitled to rights normally given to aperson. Such pro–choice supporters agree withthe view that birth represents the beginning of personhood.

Another pro–choice argument is that legalizing

abortions has eliminated many illegal abortionsperformed by unskilled practitioners underunsanitary conditions. These abortions oftencause deaths and permanent reproductiveinjuries. Abortion on demand also preventsmany unwanted births and may thus be a factorin lowering infant and child abuse, neglect, anddeath rates. Also some argue that womenshould not have to bear unwanted children in aworld with a growing population and diminishingnatural resources.

As a result of this controversy, abortion lawsvary from country to country. In Russia, whereabortion has been legal since 1920, it is allowedup to about the fourth month of pregnancy, purely by request, and is commonly used as amethod of birth control. In some countries, suchas the Philippines, Indonesia, and Bangladesh,

abortion is only allowed when pregnancythreatens the mother’s life. South Africa, NewZealand, and Hong Kong allow abortion whenthe fetus is severely damaged. In the Republicof Ireland, the operation may only be performed
