Purpose of Writing:

While Lamentations is certainly a song of mourning that is an end unto itself, it is also a statement of confession for sin and worship of God for his holiness in punishing sin. There is also a strong thread of hope in God’s future restoration of his people that runs through this book of sorrow.

Place in the Canon:

Lamentations serves as a reminder that the justice of God will not sleep forever. He will punish sin and when he does, our only response can be true brokenness and repentance.

Historically, Lamentations shows us the fall of Jerusalem. Theologically, it reveals to us the godly response to sin and punishment. Devotionally, it motivates us to respond to our own chastenings in the same way.
