BIDMATTERS

Could your shop front or the exterior of your business premises benefit from a spruce up?

We have launched a new grant scheme to help business owners, tenants and landlords meet the costs of carrying out works to improve the external appearance of their premises.

Grants of up to £2,500 are available to BID levypayers towards projects including upgrades to the facade of their premises, security improvements, signage or redecoration.

IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS WITH BID GRANT

Quarterly newsletter 4 I March 2016

Christmas seems like a long time ago but the festive season was one of optimism for the high street.

Thousands visited the town centre, making the most of our shops, restaurants and leisure amenities as well as events including the Christmas lights switch-on.

In response to your feedback we installed additional lights in the town centre and for the first time we had Christmas lights in Grove Road and Carshalton Road welcoming visitors to Sutton.

The new year has heralded a surge of activity in the town centre with the Times Square redevelopment moving forward at a pace.

The multi-million project is expected to be completed by early summer and we expect to see improvements to the high street as a result.

We have also welcomed new retailers with Foxtons, Bake & TAKE and El Mexicana opening premises.

A further sign that businesses are realising Sutton’s potential and are keen to be part of our future was evident at an Investors Lunch that we hosted on behalf of Sutton Council.

There was significant interest in Sutton as a destination and the opportunities it presents for business.

Moving forward we have a number of exciting initiatives this year. We have created a Business Improvement Grant to provide financial support for retailers and businesses towards the costs of external improvements to shopfronts or business premises.

We are also delivering an 18-month business support programme to help entrepreneurs and startups get their ventures off the ground, providing them with a ready-made audience to test their products or services.

We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Opportunity Sutton on The Pop Up Sutton programme to nurture business startups and ensure the future success and vibrancy of our town centre.

These building blocks for the future would not be possible without the right foundations.

Back in November, we celebrated the innovation, commitment and entrepreneurial spirit of our business community at the second Sutton Business Excellence Awards.

The 2016 awards open on March 7 and you can find out how to get involved on page 6.

Successful Sutton chief executive Ross Feeney said: “One of the BID’s priorities is to create and support a vibrant retail and business district.

“The appearance of business premises in the commercial centre has a considerable impact on its image and the perceptions of shoppers and visitors.

“Creating a welcoming and visually attractive high street can only add to Sutton’s vitality.

“We would encourage levypayers to get involved and take advantage of the financial support available.”

The Business Improvement Grant scheme is administered and funded by Successful Sutton as part of our strategy for high street improvement. A sum of £25,000 has been set aside to support levypayers’ building improvements for 2016.

Businesses can receive a maximum grant of £2,500 in match funding or 50% of the cost of the work, whichever is lower. The grants will not cover retrospective applications for work already completed or under way.

Applications for funding must be received by March 31, 2016, and all improvement works must be completed by October 31 this year.

Guidance notes are available on the Successful Sutton website www.successfulsuttton.co.uk to steer you through the application process and show you how to apply for funding.

RAPID RESPONSE SERVICEWHAT IS A BID? A BID (Business Improvement District) is a business-led and funded partnership created to deliver additional services to businesses within a defined commercial area. In our case, the BID operates in Sutton High Street.

Once a BID has been established by a majority vote, companies are legally bound to pay a surcharge on their business rates each year.

The levy is used to develop projects that will directly benefit businesses from street cleaning, providing security, making capital improvements, events and marketing.

In Sutton, the levy is currently 1.05% on all businesses within the BID area that have a rateable value above £10,000. Businesses below that threshold can pay a voluntary annual levy of £100.

Successful Sutton was established in October 2012 and runs until October 2017. As a BID we invest money in activities and services to promote and improve Sutton, and we strive to secure best value for you, our levy payers.

Our responsibilities are divided into four themes or sub-groups: Enhancing Sutton, Delivering Value, Protecting Sutton and Brighter Sutton.

WHAT IS ENJOY SUTTON? Enjoy Sutton is our promotions brand for the town centre. We actively promote Sutton by running regular marketing and social media campaigns, competitions, high street events and community initiatives. As a destination brand, we are committed to raising Sutton’s profile as a great place to shop, dine, work and live. All Enjoy Sutton events and activities are exclusive to the town centre and are funded by Successful Sutton.

A delegation of BID levy payers met Conservative mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith and Chancellor George Osborne to make the case for future investment in Sutton.

The meeting, which took place during a campaign visit to Nu Flame, on the Kimpton industrial estate, also pushed for the proposed Sutton tram extension to be approved.

Successful Sutton chief executive Ross Feeney was joined by Simon Bruckland, Sam Hilton, Richard Warrender and Nick Mallett, as well as Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Scully at the meeting on January 13.Ross said: “I have since written to both Zac Goldsmith and George Osborne to reaffirm our support for the tram extension, which will bring major economic benefits to Sutton as well as infrastructure improvements, alongside further investment in the town.”

Our rapid response cleaning service was established to ensure Sutton town centre is a clean and attractive area.

Our street operations team tackle urgent and reported problems in the town centre, removing chewing gum from pavements, collecting litter and overflowing bins, targeting mess from night-time events.

The service also deals with unsightly graffiti, regularly treating hot spots, as well as using specialist equipment to carry out deep cleansing of the high street.

All these services are in addition to Sutton Council’s street cleaning programme.

Successful Sutton chief executive Ross Feeney said: “We know that cleanliness and the appearance of the high street is a key concern for businesses and visitors.

“That is why we introduced the rapid response service so that we can respond to issues within the BID area as and when they arise, ensuring the town centre.”

All BID levy payers have access to the free service, which is available between 9am

and midday Tuesday to Friday. The team can be on-site within an hour.

To report an issue, call the rapid response team on 020 8770 3173 during service operating hours.

Have you signed up to our free mixed recycling and cardboard collection service?

The kerbside scheme is available to all BID levypayers in partnership with recycling company First Mile and can help save your business money.

To sign up, drop us an email at [email protected] with the subject line Mixed Recycling.

A new initiative to enable entrepreneurs to get a foot on the business ladder has launched in Sutton.

Pop Up Sutton – The Entrepreneurs Space is an exciting 18-month business support programme which will provide an opportunity for start-ups and budding entrepreneurs to showcase their fledgling business ventures in Sutton town centre.

Successful Sutton is delivering the programme on behalf of Opportunity Sutton, the economic arm of Sutton Council.

The fully funded programme consists of workshops and personalised advice sessions all aimed at guiding start-ups through the process of setting up and running a business, or taking an existing business to the next level.

A pop-in event at TaZza coffee shop on February 4 was attended by scores of people looking to develop their businesses.

The launch event was an opportunity to find out more about what the programme entails as well as to have an informal chat to the business mentors who will be running the training workshops. Entrepreneurs on the programme will have the chance to showcase their business to a ready-made audience with a dedicated pop up space once a month in Sutton High Street.

Teresa Whitfield, Successful Sutton’s head of marketing, said: “Starting a new business or trying to establish your business in the marketplace can be daunting, especially if you are unsure what step to take next.

“Pop Up Sutton aims to equip entrepreneurs with the advice and skills they need to succeed and to create a number of sustainable businesses ready to take the next step on their journey in Sutton.”

Applications for the first round of workshops have now closed, however there will be entry points at various intervals in the programme for start-ups that want to get involved.

SHOP WATCHGet involved in Sutton’s Shop Watch scheme and play your part in keeping the town centre safe.

Retailers in the BID area and the police meet monthly to share information, intelligence and best practice in areas such as retail crime and antisocial behaviour. The meetings are also an opportunity to raise any crime and safety concerns.

Shop Watch ties in with the existing Radio Scheme, which provides BID area retailers and the police with a direct radio link to quickly report incidents and share information.

Meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month at Successful Sutton’s offices. Retailers joining the free scheme are given Shop Watch window stickers to display in their premises as a crime deterrent.

To receive a Shop Watch welcome pack, or register your interest in attending a meeting, email [email protected]

EVENTS ROUNDUP ...

Liberty X star Michelle Heaton started Sutton’s Christmas celebrations in style when she switched on the town’s lights.

The singer and presenter entertained the crowds, performing a medley of the chart-topping band’s greatest hits, as well as tracks by Little Mix and the carol O Holy Night.

Thousands lined the high street to catch the live performance, undeterred by the wet weather.

The lights switch-on rounded off an afternoon of free family entertainment which included live music, seasonal street entertainers and performances by community groups on the TaZza stage.

Sutton’s Land Train ran free rides up and down the high street and children had a chance to see Santa in his grotto.

Activities also ran throughout the day at the St Nicholas Shopping Centre and shoppers were able to browse for gifts at the Christmas market.

In the run-up to Christmas there was also free festive entertainment in the town centre.

Santa’s grotto returned each weekend in December, with more than 800 presents handed out to children.

The giant snow globe installation outside the St Nicholas shopping centre proved a popular attraction with hundreds stepping inside the winter wonderland.

Visitors were able to walk into the giant snow globe and play with the snow before having a souvenir photo taken.

The events were staged by Successful Sutton as part of our commitment to promote the town centre and attract visitors.

Successful Sutton chief executive, Ross Feeney said: “The entertainment over the festive period ensured large numbers of people visited Sutton in the run-up to Christmas with 101,000 visitors recorded on December 23.”

Save the date: The 2016 Christmas lights switch-on will be on November 19! We’ve been asking for your feedback to help us plan this year’s activities. If you want to be involved, or have any suggestions contact [email protected]

There is a lot of discussion at the moment about how high streets, town centres and retail-focused BIDs quantify their offer. The phrase ‘define your USPs’ has been used with almost careless abandon at industry-focused conferences, seminars and workshops throughout 2015. And it should be.

As high streets and retail-focused town centres redefine how they encourage their local populations to keep visiting and spend their leisure £s and their retail £s it is important to understand why people visit and what they spend their money on. If a town centre identifies its strengths it can also acknowledge its weaknesses and work to address them.

Perhaps, frustratingly, what does not seem to have been as high up the industry agenda this year is a recognition of the importance (and significance) of the visitor experience. A simple audit of a town centre’s customer experience is a fascinating undertaking. How can I get to this location by car or public transport? Are the car parks well sign-posted, plentiful, inexpensive and secure? What is signage around the town like? Can I find the shops I want? Is there free wi-fi? Can I pay for my car parking by credit/debit card rather than cash? Can I get a decent coffee and some lunch? All these ‘experience interactions’ will help determine whether an

individual or a family choose to visit Local Town A or Local Town B.

During 2013, the first full year of Successful Sutton, the results of a number of snapshot high street surveys revealed that many elderly and less mobile shoppers didn’t visit the whole high street as the gradient of the incline prohibited or put them off visiting either the top or bottom.

For the 2013-2014 Christmas period we introduced a pair of six-seater golf buggies (we branded them shopper shuttles) to carry shoppers from one end of the high street to the other. There were no formal stopping points so passengers could jump on and off outside their shop of choice. The shuttles were scheduled to run for 8 weeks from 1st December to 31st January. Within two weeks of introducing the shuttles we started receiving letters and emails from passengers saying how much they loved the service and how it made the whole high street accessible to them again. A number of people wrote to say that the shuttle meant they could now start visiting Sutton again.

The Successful Sutton BID Board agreed to continue funding one shuttle, and the service has been in operation ever since. The shuttle, currently sponsored and liveried by the Post Office, operates Monday - Saturday 9am to 5.30pm and offers free access to the whole high street. Our shuttle drivers Junior and

David have become local celebrities - well-known and liked by their many hundreds of regular users.

The shuttle carries approximately 250 shoppers each day, covering over 50 miles in the process. The shuttle service is a relatively low-cost intervention that improves Sutton’s customer experience, whilst providing added value to our levy payers - many of whom have had increased sales from once-regular customers now returning to their premises. The shuttle is a hugely popular regular sight in Sutton high street.

The shopper shuttle is part of our wider strategy of improving our visitor experience that includes loyalty cards, activities and special events. Interestingly, the shuttle is also now considered one of Sutton’s USPs. Internet shopping has become popular because of the convenience and simplicity of its customer experience. High streets, like ours, can fight back but only if we prioritise our visitors experience.

Seven years later, The Projekt Store has not only weathered the storm it continues to adapt to the times, embracing social media and online shopping as a way of retaining and building its customer base.

The retailer was crowned Sutton’s Business of the Year in November having already been named Best Business for Marketing and Social Media at the 2015 Sutton Business Excellence Awards.

Mr Lawrence, who was on holiday in Dubai when the awards were announced, is encouraging businesses to get involved this year.

He said: “It’s a must for any businesses in the borough, small, medium-sized and especially independents, to get involved and be recognised.”

2016 marks the third year of the Sutton Business Excellence Awards. If you’re interested in sponsoring the awards, call 020 3282 7198 or email [email protected].

At a time when high streets up and down the country were hit by the economic downturn Mike Lawrence risked everything to open his new menswear store in Sutton.

TIMES SQUARE DEVELOPMENT BACK ON TRACKThe redevelopment of Times Square is on target to be completed this spring.

Work resumed on site in November when developer Macmillan and Wright took over the multi-million project after it came to a halt in the summer.

The redevelopment will create a new entrance, refurbishment of the shopping centre and the creation of bigger retail units fronting the High Street.

Retailers TK Maxx and Poundworld are already signed up as tenants and Times Square’s owners, Lumina Real Estate Capital, said there had been significant interest in the remaining vacant retail units.

Successful Sutton chief executive Ross Feeney said: “We are delighted that the builders are back on site, there has been a lot of disruption on the high street over the last six months with the development work going on.”

The St Nicholas Centre also has a new owner. AEW bought the leasehold interest in the shopping centre late last year. We welcome them to Sutton and look forward to working with them in the future.
