Right to Health in South L.A.

Learn from South LA Another from Jennifer Ganata
I am very interested in seeing how we can learn from the struggles that have been won in South LA. South LA is a great big area and I noticed even the citywide ordinance on environmental justice that folks in Wilmington, Pacoima, and Boyle Heights are working on does not include a pilot project in South LA. I want to really take apart what works in South LA and what doesn't and by looking to South LA as a model how do we apply that to the rest of LA?

Learn from South LA Comment from Jennifer Ganata
I also would like to specifically explore the Transportation Orientated Development that is being located in South LA by USC. It's an age old question but what ways will ensure community participation in development and prevent gentrification. What can all communities learn about the current organizing efforts around space and equity be applied city wide.

Comment from Stefaniere: construction
My vote is going toward incorporating construction issues in a big way!! This is REALLY important to me. I am happy to work with anyone to incorporate their greatest interests &
talents into this concept. I am also happy to work in another framework as long as we can incorporate construction in some way. Someone last class mentioned the idea of incarceration in
communities of color. I see this also as a good tie in with construction because it is one of the few industries that actively
helps people exiting the criminal justice system go into meaningful, middle class careers. It is a viable pathway for low income individuals who they do not choose higher education or the military. There are some really great opportunities here to
impact this system in a way that healthy will create healthy South LA communities. Working on next steps for green construction (healthy jobs & healthy communities) is also a
possibility!

Comment from Adrienere: a new proposal
Create a media campaign in South L.A. that defines or acknowledges the various aspect of health...free from violence,
access to healthy food, green spaces, environmental health issues in & outside of our homes, mental/emotional well being, respect for different cultures, quality education, quality jobs, living wage
etc...
