“Don’t underestimatethe value of doingnothing….

… of just going along, listening to all the thingsyou can’t hear and not bothering” said (myfavourite) Winnie the Pooh.

I have got to the tender age of 40(ish) and I’m only just starting toappreciate the benefits of just stopping. That might sound completelyridiculous but when you’re an incredibly busy person there just isn’t thetime to stop. With endless lists, children to sort and businesses to runwhere do you schedule a ‘stop’? After all, if I stop then that pushesthings out of sync and then I’m even busier when I come to start again.

That’s right isn’t it?

Or not. We recently found ourselves child free for a day and with theweather being fairly miserable decided, uncharacteristically, to pack upsome sandwiches and a few books and drive down to Titchfield Haven. We set up camp in the back of our Bongo (lovingly known as the fun busto the kids) and sat for anafternoon doing very, very little.

It seemed decadent, luxuriousand amazing. And the best bit? Itrejuvenated me and gave memore energy to do all the things Ineeded to the following week.OK so this seems a bit obvious butuntil you step out of your comfortzone and realise the worlddoesn’t fall apart if you take alittle time out then you’ll neverknow how therapeutic it can be.Go on, try it.

Much love until next monthCoralie and Sean x

Have you enjoyed seeing thechurch sailing boats on thecreek? Perhaps you’ve evenbeen a member of the club.

The year was 1965. Sir WinstonChurchill died, Stanley Matthewsplays his first First Division game offootball, a 70mph speed limit isimposed on British roads - and TheRevd Bill Rees, then Rector ofAlverstoke, had a brainwave: start asailing club for the children ofAlverstoke parish!

St.Mary’s Junior Sailing Club:1965-2015Fifty years later we can look backon the history of the sailing club onthe creek which has been enjoyedby thousands. Many formermembers continue to live locally andenjoy sailing, fulfilling one of theclub’s objectives: to introducechildren in the parish to a healthycharacter building activity with aspirit of adventure that can beenjoyed throughout their lives.

That spirit along with communalendeavour were very much in mindwhen sailing commenced in 1965from the disused huts of the former

‘Vikings’ club. The Vikings hadstarted in 1954 in Southsea but atthe end of their first year, the thenRector Revd Canon WindsorRoberts hosted a meeting in ourSt.Francis Church, Clayhall, and theclub was to establish a base on thechurch land next to a beach on thecreek along Clayhall Road.

The Clayhall Road site remains thehome of St.Mary’s Junior SailingClub and now, with two renewedclub boat houses sheltering a fleetof a dozen modern sailing dinghies, and a team of dedicated sailingofficers and parents, the club isthriving for the young people ofAlverstoke parish in this GoldenAnniversary year. During anysummer weekend afternoon theboats can be seen on Stoke Lakeadding to the renowned view ofSt.Mary’s Church from JackieSpencer’s Bridge with the boats inthe foreground.

There was great excitement atSt.Mary’s Junior Sailing Club in1971 when work started on the weirbeneath Jackie Spencer’s Bridge -the committee fearing that thechildren would simply sail over the

top! But the benefits of the weirhave been outstanding in allowingsailing and many other wateractivities on the creek at all states ofthe tide.

It is a privilege for me as Rector tobe the honorary Commodore of thesailing club and I would likecongratulate the club and thank thehard working committee and sailingofficers who continue to give somuch for the benefit of thecommunity. The club chairman,Richard Baker-Jones is serialisingthe club’s story in the church’sparish news magazine leading up toan anniversary regatta on the creekon 19th September.

The full history and details of thesailing club can be foundat www.smjsc.org.uk

Grass Roots

The other evening there was aknock at the door. Outside was aman who informed me that thetree in the front garden neededto be pruned back and that hewas the person to do it for me.

Now the tree in question is aBetula ermanii which is knownfor its main characteristic whichis particularly stunning bark -creamy white, tinged with thefaintest blush of pink. It also hasa conical crown, catkins in thespring, mid green leavesthroughout the season and agentle yellow glow about it in theautumn. I love that tree. It is thefirst thing I see every morningand the birds sit in it andwelcome the day. I love it tosuch an extent that we paid for a

telephone engineer to come andreroute the telephone wires thatran through its crown, ratherthan cut it back in any way, which would have beensignificantly easier and cheaperto do. So there is no way thatanyone was going to chop thecrown of that tree off, howeverenterprising they may have been.

The man on my door step lookedat me as though he could notbelieve his ears when I told himthis. He went away but it was thisman’s incredulity at my refusal tochop the tree back that made merealise what really divides thetrue gardener from the rest ofthe population.

It is this: - if a plant you love, such as the caseof my Betulaermanii, becomesentangled insome aspect ofmodern living, doyou sacrifice theplant or try andfind a way tosave it?

Obviously thereare situationswhen the planthas to go butthere are plentyof others werethe plant issacrificed justbecause it is theeasiest, quickestor cheapest thing

to do, particularly with trees. Ithink it is so sad to see trees thathave had their heads choppedoff, so to speak, especially whendone badly or incorrectly. Itlooks brutal, impatient andaggressive.

That said, I have a dilemma onmy hands at the moment. Agarden which is being designedby my company, has a semi-mature willow tree in it, which is2m away from the house of theirnext door neighbour. I think itshould be removed to preventany damage being inflicted onthe house in the future but thegarden owner wants to keep it asit is a graceful tree which herchildren love playing around.

So what to do? It breaks myheart to get it removed yet it wasplanted so badly in the first placethat it will eventually causedamage to the neighbour’shouse. So in this instance, itmight be better to pollard it(correct term for chopping itsbranches off) so that it lives tosee another day.

So, the conclusion I’ve eventuallyarrived at is that the truegardener is the one who plansahead.

Hampshire Trading Standards Service is warning the public to be wary of doorstep cold call-ers. Never feel pressured into buying anything on the doorstep.

Phone Scams. Each year many people fall victim to fraudsters - sometimes operating fromoverseas - intent on stealing their personal and financial information. If you receive an unsolicit-ed or unexpected telephone call be on your guard as it may be a scam. Never give personalor financial information out to anyone who cold calls you on the telephone. Be cautious and ifin doubt, hang up. In all cases, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Summer Security Tips

Keep the boundaries to properties secure – by locking side gates

Make sure windows and doors are locked when going out and at night

Ensure front doors and windows are locked when out in the garden as ‘sneak in’ burglariescan increase in the summer months.

Fully lock UPVC doors with a key – don’t just lift the handle

Don’t advertise on social networking sites that you are going on holiday.

Ensure your vehicle is locked at all times. Leaving windows open maykeep your vehicle cooler during the daytime hours but only makes it eas-ier to gain access to your vehicle. Keep all valuable items in a lockedglove compartment or hidden away.

Lock your bike with a good quality lock. When storing your bike in agarage or shed secure it to a ground or wall anchor.

The epicenter of financial activityfor investors is the StockExchange. Be it in London (FTSE),New York (NYSE), Paris (DAC),Johannesburg (JSE), Sydney (ASX)or just about any country in theworld - the stock exchange iswhere it all happens.

On the corner of Wall and Broadstreets, the site of GeorgeWashington's inauguration, theNew York Stock Exchange isperhaps the most iconic of themall. The famed Wall Street bullstatue standing proudly on thecorner is snapped by thousandsof tourists sensing the energy andimportance of this place.Ironically, fewer than 24% ofthese people actually own anystock or invest in the stockmarket.

What pops out when you visit thefloor of the NYSE or the LondonStock Exchange is how fewpeople seem to be working at thetrading posts. This is always a bitof a letdown for me. I keephoping to see crazy tradersrunning around with tickets intheir hands like we see in themovies Wall Street or TradingPlaces.

But those days are long gone, replaced with electronic tradingfrom all over the world, andthat's a good thing for individualinvestors like you and me.Investing is more available, moreaccessible, more transparent, andcheaper than ever before. No

need to ring up your brokeranymore to buy a "lot" (100shares) of a stock.

That's because we have access tolow-cost investing like neverbefore. We also have access fromwhere ever we happen to be.Sitting on the beach inMozambique - a quick buy or sellvia my online broker and back toliving life.

That's pretty awesome – to beable to buy hundreds orthousands of a stock, to becomea part-owner (even just afraction) of great businesses forless than a six-pack of somethingnicely chilled.

One way (the best, in my mind)to take advantage of it is to setup an investing plan via an onlinebroker in an index tracking fundor Exchange Traded Fund (ETF)and commit to it for the longterm. Through the highs and thelows. Get a plan and stick with it.That's what I've been doing forwell over twelve years now andwhat I’ve got my nieces andnephews doing. Each month theyare setting aside some money toinvest into businesses (as I preferto think of it) that they plan tohold for a long time.

Not tickers. Not charts. Nottrading. Not “great tips” from thehairdresserGreat Businesses + Investing +

Long term. That's the Wealth Chef Recipe.

So whenit comestohelpingmy family put their money towork, I do what I always do – Iturn to Expand Your DoughRecipe in The Wealth Chef book.

I stick to the tried-and-truewealthy approach to regular andconsistent investing, thinking ofmy stocks as businesses with trueassets, competitive advantages, and earnings power. I invest withthe intention of owning for years- decades, even.

And that's the huge differencebetween Wealth Chef investingand the kind of activityconducted by so many traders, whether they are on the floor ofthe NYSE, FTSE, ASX or DAC;sitting in a hedge fund officesuite; trying to catch the spreadon the forex market; orexcessively trading a client'saccount in Any Town, WORLD.Wealth Chefs are business-oriented, long-term investors. We know the value of beingowners of great companies andsharing in the value.

It has worked well for me and itcan work for you, too.
