HILLCRESTON PARK MERINO AND POLL MERINO STUDSOver the last 15 years we have been using selective breeding to give our sheep more frame and bone structure while still keeping our prized 1PP type wool that is soft and bright with a stylish crimp and long staple length.

We are selecting for a modern sheep, producing a bigger carcase and more wool whilst maintaining style, handle and brightness, a move that has been demanded by industry, markets and our clients.

In 2002, we undertook an AI program using a 15.6 micron Merryville Ram who sold for $42,000. This successful outcross started the Stirling family that has consistently performed well and has proven to be a sale day favourite.

In 2010, Alfoxton President was used in our AI program, this outcross has worked brilliantly with sale rams testing as fine as 16 micron and weighing over 100KG.

In 2013, we purchased a $5,000 son of Alfoxton Diplomat, who sold for $46,000 from Conrayn Merino Stud.

These crosses have proved successfully in helping us achieve our aim of breeding sheep with more wool and on larger frames, whilst maintaining the bright, soft, stylish wools Hillcreston Park is known for.

OUR HISTORYHillcreston Park situated in the valley of Bigga is one of few superfine horn & poll merino studs in Australia consistently producing wool clips averaging under 17.0 micron.Hillcreston Park was established in 1992 with a 25% draft of Hillcreston Merino stud.Hillcreston Merino Stud was founded in 1910 when the Picker brothers purchased Collaroy blood ewes from G.D. Hay, ‘Goonoongla’ Bigga, NSW. In 1925 Sam Picker acquired a portion of the flock from his father and from that year until 1954 only ‘Merryville’, rams were introduced.Rams introduced since 1954 have been from ‘Valleyfield’ and ‘Winton’ with a uniform stud ram from Merryville being purchased in 1980. In 2002 Semen was purchased of a 15.6 micron Merryville ram which is our Stirling Sire line, Rams are now fourth generation. & in 2010 Semen used of Alfoxton President a 14 Micron Ram.In 1963 Trevor Picker was taken into the partnership. Following the death of its Sam Picker in 1972 the stud was carried on by Trevor Picker and family.Hillcreston Park has continued producing the same high standards that have been set in the history of Hillcreston. Our aim is to produce larger framed sheep with a long white staple, while still holding our traditional 1PP type wool. We believe with the current meat market trends a larger frame sheep is required while still holding our traditional type wool.In July 1992 Hillcreston Park Poll Stud was registered, Flock No RM. 1161, after the purchase of Super Bute, a $10,000 buy at Melbourne Sheep Show and Sale in 1989 from Mt Bute Poll Stud of Linton, Victoria. In December 1989, 20 stud ewes were purchased from Mt Bute and 30 stud ewes from Hillcreston to raise the stud ewes to 50. In 2009 a 15 Micron Stud Poll ram was purchased from Greenlands Stud & is breeding very well.

Trevor Picker A.M.

Dad was Born on the 20th of July 1928 and passed away 7th of June 2019 just short

of his 91st birthday

Dads health was the best it has been for the past few years until an unfortunate accident took his life.

In his last words he was still thanking people for trying to help him, a very unselfish act, which showed the type of person he was, Dad didn’t have an enemy in the world, a very humble man who never mentioned his achievements until the last few years where his stories started to flow fairly wildly with some extra achievements which would make us all laugh.

Trevor was born in Crookwell to Sam & Edith Picker. Dad’s older sister Molly is deceased. Dad is survived by his Wife Janet and their four Sons, Danny, Murray, Grant and Brett and his half-brother Stephen. 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren and still counting.

Dad was raised at Hillcrest Bigga.

Dad had very little schooling and started working when he was 14 years old. One of his first jobs was rabbiting with his uncle Curry and travelled on his racehorse Jack of Hearts.

Always a sheep man, Dad took over the classing and selection of the sheep on the farm at a very early age of his youth from his father Sam. Dad classed superfine clips around Bigga to record prices, Dad’s favourite record price was the world record in 1964 of 1800 pence a pound which he classed and prepared for sale with his father Sam. Dad generously helped others with their flocks by lending Rams, but never asking for their return. In The late 80’s he donated a Ram to the Mudgee Superfine Wool Growers Association, which was raffled and made that Branch viable to continue to this day. Quite a generous man to some, but also a hard task master as well at times.

Dad was a pretty handy sportsman early on. Although sport in Bigga was pretty much Rugby League, Cricket, Hockey and Tennis. Dad himself

was a budding young fullback until he was struck down with Polio in his late teens. This shortened one leg as a result. Then when he was around 22, he was very sick with pneumonia, this is when a young Lady by the name of Janet Hope Howard fully came on the scene, Mum was told dad was very sick, so mum went to dads home and then took him home with her and nursed him for three weeks back to full health.

Dad and Mum were Married on the 3rd of June 1954, and lived with Mums mother Doris at Linton in Bigga, until building our family home a little later, this is where Dad and Mum lived the rest of their lives until Mum moved into Newhaven Lodge a few years ago.

Like a lot of people Dad and Mum raised us on lamb, Rabbit, Black Duck, Fish and Nanna’s Roosters, Eggs and some Beef. We always had a large veggie garden and Uncle Curry used to milk the cow, we lived a very simple life with very few luxuries unlike what current generations expect, but we all lived a very happy lifestyle and never needed for anything or expected anything.

In the early days of our life it was a major experience for our family to visit towns outside Bigga, fishing trips were an annual family event.

One day Dad hit our pony Cracker on the rear end with a shovel because he wouldn’t walk on. Mum was on board. Landed and broke her tail bone. We thought it was funny, but mum wasn’t impressed

Not only a passionate sheep and wool man, as President of the Bigga Fishing club he was one of the chief instigators of netting Murray Cod and Silver Perch at Burrinjuck and Burrendong dams and bringing these fish back to Wyangala for the stocking of the dam. Anglers should thank Dad and his Committee for organizing this with the Fisheries of the time. He was very proud of this achievement.

One job Dad also undertook that very few knew about was the undertaker of the Bigga district and also the caretaker of our local cemetery. This was for at least 30 years. I can still remember Dad being very quiet at home after a death in our local community where he performed his selfless duty to friends.

He was Captain of the local Bush Fire brigade when we use to handle fires with a bag or branch out of a tree.

Dad’s motto was simply put in out as quick as possible.

As sons upon leaving school, at shearing time we had to go through an apprenticeship, firstly mustering and drenching, before being allowed in the shearing shed firstly as a wool presser, then roustabout, piece-picker before being allowed to skirt a fleece. Now classing that was a different game. Dad’s way or the highway.

Dad a great supporter of Rugby League where he helped run the Bigga Bears during the 70’s and 80’’s. and proudly watched his sons and grand sons play. He loved sport and always told me of his grandchildren’s achievements in hockey, football and shearing and harness racing.

Dad an avid race man who enjoyed having a bet, mainly $6 trifecta’s unless Dennis was driving, that attracted some extra keen interest.

A very keen fisherman, Dad always fished with some good friends and family, to note Noel & Netta, Warwick and Joan, Kevin and others. His biggest fish came from Burrinjuck Dam, a 121-pound Murray Cod he caught with Kevin Picker. The amount of large Cod dad caught would be unachievable these days.

As his sons we had numerous fishing trips with Dad but the best trip I seen him have was when he came back to bank in a boat, him driving of course with Grant and they had at least 20 Murray Cod over 15 pounds. I also remember one special trip down the Lachlan where Murray had the good fortune of watching Dad pull in a 70 pounder and Mum pull in a 60 pounder. I must of had the wrong shoes on that day. One trip on the Lachlan I remember dad catching 7 yellow belly from 7 lines, those were the days. There were no line or bag limits those days.

We built a coast house about 1974 in Batemans Bay where a lot of fun and holidays were had. I remember him telling me home brew won’t affect you as he took four steps forward and three back. We had numerous fishing trips to the flat head grounds with some quite large hauls, where the cleaning had to be done immediately on return to dock.

Dad received the Order of Australia Medal in 1988 for distinguished service to the superfine wool industry, and he was always very proud to wear his AM Lapel badge when the occasion arose.

Dad was a very proud independent man until the very end. He would always visit Mum in the last few years at least twice a week, but always said he didn’t want to live in a nursing home.

But Dad was always a kind family man and his love for mum grew deeper as the years went by, his 65 years of marriage to mum got even stronger as well. Pop a self-acclaimed Doctor he would try to prescribe his and mum’s medicines to the very end, always knowing more than any Doctor or nurse.

Friends thank you to all for the messages and condolences from all over the world and our fellow wool growers and friends who have contacted our families.

Dad, all our friends and the people you have touched during your life are far better off because of your contributions and friendship.

Love you Dad and Thank You for the guidance, advice, memories and love to everyone that knew you, especially Mum, your sons and our families. I hope that one day I can be as good a person as you and we can all do you proud.

We miss you deeply so please rest in peace until we meet again on that river bank in the sky.
