The answer was no, when they asked if we could put a Gates Carbon Belt Drive on a 20-inch wheel Bike Friday. Until now. Bike Friday engineer Rob English went to work with Co-Founder Alan Scholz, and they redesigned the rear triangle for our new bike: Silk.

The Silk liberates you to enjoy the many perks of Gates Carbon Belt Drive Technology on a 20-inch Bike Friday. A Gates Carbon Belt weighs about one-third as much as a typical chain, lasts about twice as long, and requires no lubrication. Gates says their Carbon Belt will last 10,000 miles. The Gates Belt can be combined with a variety of internal hubs, including Shimano’s Alfine 8-speed and 11-speed hubs, as well as a NuVinci’s 360N Continuous Variable Transmission. The resurgence of American bicycle racing in the 1970s gave birth to the essence of Bike Friday in Fargo, North Dakota. That’s where Alan Scholz, as a teenager, opened his first bike shop, Nomad, in the basement of his house. His parents, Earl and Mary Esther Scholz, became the district reps, who organized racing throughout the Dakotas. TOURING When Hanz and Alan Scholz surveyed the landscape for travel bikes back in 1992, they saw obvious gaping holes to fill: fit and performance. “We thought, just having a travel bike that fits would be better than the one-size-fits-all folding bikes out there,” Alan says. “We didn’t stop there. We focused on delivering a high performance bike.” Bike Friday focused on high quality standards, and designed a bike that offers an entire Travel System. Bike Fridays eliminated the limits. They became familiar partners on the TransAm routes crossing the U.S. It didn’t take long for them to lead a world-wide invasion. “I was literally in the middle of nowhere in Japan,” Bike Consultant Ruthy Kanagy recalls, “with my Bike Friday parked out front of a restaurant on Rishiri Island. Fold and Go ... in Style In 2006, Bike Friday targeted finding solutions for the commuter’s quandary: The Last Mile. Getting from home to mass transit, then to the office from the station proved to be the greatest challenge slowing the growth of commuting as individuals searched to improve their daily lives.
