1.2 Scattered light measuring method
Several optical sensors measure a combination of light scattered and absorbed by oildroplets in the sample stream. The sensor signals are then processed by a microproces-sor to produce a linearised output. If an alarm (works set point 15 ppm) occurs, the two oil alarm relays are activated after
the (adjustable) time delay.A self-diagnosis is integrated in the monitor for the components of the sensor and the evaluati-on circuitry. The microprocessor continuously monitors the condition of the sensor components andassociated electronics to ensure that calibration accuracy is maintained over time and ex-tremes of environmental conditions.
The diagram below shows the principle of scattered light measuring.

This measuring principle is the most frequently used method for the continuous meas-urement of oil in water and has proved itself in practice.

3 Installation of the Monitor OMD-11
3.1 With an RWO oily water separator of 0.1 or 0.25 m3/h capacity
Because of the small size of the oily water separator, the Monitor OMD-11 is not mountedon the separator but delivered separately.
IMPORTANTThe Monitor OMD-11 should be located close to the oily water separator in order tominimise response delays. The distance between monitor and separator should ne-ver be more than 8 metres; any greater distance would result in a response time ofover 20 seconds which is the max response time in accordance with IMO regula-tions.

4 Operation
4.1 Important Notes
a) This equipment must be installed and operated in strict accordance with the instruc-tions contained in this manual. Failure to do so will impair the protection provided.
b) Installation and servicing must be undertaken by a competent and suitably skilledperson.
c) The equipment must be earthed according to the relevant requirements.
d) The unit must be isolated from the electrical supply before any maintenance of theequipment is attempted.
e) All national or local codes of practice or regulations must be observed and, whereapplicable, are deemed to take precedence over any directive or information con-tained in this manual.
f) To avoid wrong measurements, only quick separating detergents / cleaner should beused.
g) In case of freezing conditions the measuring cell should be emptied completely.
4.2 Commissioning
Once the installation, wiring and piping connections have been completed, carry out thefollowing checks:
4.2.1 Connections
a) Switch the oily separator to ON. Check whether the Power LED lights up.Check the power supply to the oily separator if necessary.
DANGER
At electrical voltages > 42 VDirect contact with live parts can cause serious injury or death.Only qualified electricians should carry out work on live parts.
b) Check all piping connections for leaks and rectify as appropriate.
c) Check the flow rate.
The equipment is set up in the factory for a flow rate 0.5 up to 4 l/min. Adjust theflow rate through the unit by using the small screws in the cell cap (Fig. 1, Pos.15). Turning the screw anticlockwise will increase the flow rate.
Note:The flow rate should be checked on both the clean water supply and theseparator sample supply. If the clean water supply is obtained from a highpressure source, the flow rate will be higher than from the sample point.
The flow rate does not influence the accuracy of the instrument. The adjustmentis only important for the time delay between the sample point and the monitor.

4.2.2 Functional Tests
a) Run oil-free water through the instrument to purge the system.
a) Switch on the instrumentand make sure that thePower LED is illumi-nated and the display ischanging between "INI"and numbers, decreas-ing from "20". The monitor will display "0" with clean water, otherwise themonitor will be in working conditions when it reached the measured value.Allow a few minutes for the system to warm up and stabilise.
b) During oil-free water is running through the monitor check the Zero adjust-ment according Section 11. The display should be "0". If the display varies bygreater amounts, it may be that air entrainment is present. If this is the case, the cause must be located and rectified.
c) If the Zero needs to be calibrated, this can be done by using the buttons onthe front panel. Pressing simultaneously the buttons " !" and " "" will de-crease the display, pressing simultaneously the buttons " "" and " #" will
result in a higher reading.
4.3 Alarm
The unit is delivered with a works adjustment according the IMO-requirements. The alarmpoints are set to 15 ppm. Other alarm levels (for 5 or 10 ppm) can be set (see 4.4).
4.4 Alarm Set Points and Time Delay
Two alarm circuits, with levels adjustable over the entire measuring range, are built intothe equipment. The alarm circuits 1 + 2 are set up in the factory for 15 ppm (according toIMO). Each circuit has an alarm LED associated with it. Each alarm circuit has, in addi-tion, a potential-free contact for feeding the signal to the outside or for the controlling of
electrical circuits. In RWO oily separators with Monitor OMD-11, the alarm 1 signal is taken to the shipsalarm system. The signal cable should be connected to terminals 17 and 18 of the sepa-rators control system. In RWO oily separators with Monitor OMD-11, the alarm 2 signal is used to control the 3-way recirculation valve. If the limiting value for residue oil is exceeded, it is switched torecirculate back to the bilge or to the bilge water tank. The valve will also be switched tothis position if the bilge water oil separator is switched to the OFF position or the pneu-matic pressure fails.
Please notefor better understanding:
Alarm output of the Monitor OMD-11
in alarm status the position of the alarm switch is open (potential-free, de-energised)
if the power supply is interrupted or the system is not in service, the position of thealarm sw itch is also in alarm position open, (potential-free, de-energised)
This fact sometimes causes trouble because the ships alarm is initiated whenthe oily water separator is off.
Because of this fact, we recommend to connect the alarm 1 output to the control box ofthe oily water separator. Here the alarm circuit will be closed as soon as the main switchof the control box is in off position i. e. no alarm signal will be transmitted as long as theoily water separator is not in service. The alarm 2 is used to control the 3-way diverting valve at the clean water outlet of the oilywater separator. If the oil content in the outflow exceeds 15 ppm, the 3-way valve will beswitched over from "overboard discharge to "recirculation to bilge or bilgewater tank.

7 Monitor operation
7.1 with an RWO oily water separator of 0.1 or 0.25 m3/h capacity
IMPORTANT!
With these low capacity separators, the complete water flow of the separator is ledthrough the monitor. For this, the holes in the head screw of the cell are opened byremoving the flow adjustment screws in the factory.
7.2 with an RWO oily water separator from 0.5 to 10.0 m3/h capacity
IMPORTANT!With these separators, only a part of the water flow through the separator is led viaa bypass through the monitor. For this, a back-pressure orifice plate (separator,Pos. 11) is built into the main flow between the pump and the 3-way recirculationvalve (separator Pos. 23). The amount of the flow through the monitor is, as a rule, already set up in the factory.
The flow rate can be increased in special installation cases by the removal of anadjusting screw, or even both if required, Pos. 15, in the cell head screw (see Sec-tion 1.3, Fig. 1). The flow rate should be at least 0.5 litre/min and for these sepa-rator duties, usually not greater than 2 litre/min.
7.3 Before commissioning
7.3.1 Check if all electrical wiring is done perfectly.
DANGERAt electrical voltages > 42 V
Direct contact with live parts may cause serious injury or death.Work on live parts should only be carried out by qualified electricians.
7.3.2 Check that all mechanical connections are correct and seated properly.
7.4 Before each start
7.4.1 Switch the 3-way ball valve to the position "flushing with clean water".7.4.2 Set the main power switch on the oily water separator to "ON" .7.4.3 The power LED should light up and the indicator "INI" should show a set of num-
bers, beginning with "20", then change and after a short time show "0. Carry outa zero balance, if necessary (see Section 4.2.2).
7.4.4 Wait several minutes till the equipment has reached its operating temperature anda stable state.
7.4.5 Switch the 3-way ball valve to the position "sample water supply".7.4.6 The equipment is now ready for operation and can monitor the clean water leav-
ing the separator.

10.2.6 Replace the O-rings (2) and the sample tube (7) in the inlet block (1). Replacethe O-rings (2) in the outlet block (4).
10.2.7 Mount the inlet block, the outlet block and the piping.
10.2.8 Do a pressure test at approx. 8 bar with oil free water and make sure that thesample tube is absolutely clean from the outside.
10.2.9 Insert the PCB and make sure that the connection wiring is routed correctly. Re-connect the front panel to the PCB (Dwg. No. 60600-30) and screw it back inplace.
10.2.10 Examine the colour of the desiccator (Fig. 1, Pos. 14). If the colour is light blueor white, the desiccator needs to be replaced.
IMPORTANT!The desiccator cartridge ensures a low humidity inside the measuring cellto prevent erroneous readings which could arise from condensation onthe glass tube. Changing the cartridge is done by unscrewing the unitfrom the front plate and screwing in again. This can be done withoutopening up the equipment. The protective shell of the new cartridgeserves also as a tool.
10.2.11 Carry out a calibration according to Section 13.3.The monitor is now ready for use.
10.3 PCB Replacement (Refer to Fig. 1)
DANGERAt electrical voltages > 42 VDirect contact with live parts may cause serious injury or death.Work on live parts should only be carried out by qualified electricians.
IMPORTANT!Before opening the device, make sure that any water that might be lying on thehousing is wiped off. If you dont take this precaution, water can run over the edgeinto the device and damage the electronic parts.
10.3.1 Switch off the power supply and stop the water flow.
10.3.2 Open the instrument and remove the front panel. Disconnect the plug connec-tion to the PCB (Dwg. No. 60600-50).
10.3.3 Pull the PCB carefully out of its seat and disconnect the wiring.
10.3.4 Connect the new PCB accordingly.
10.3.5 Mount the PCB and replace the front panel.10.3.6 Examine the colour of the desiccator (14). If the colour is light blue or white, thedesiccator needs to be replaced.
10.3.7 Carry out a calibration according to Section 4.2.2.

10.4 Calibration
DANGERAt electrical voltages > 42 VDirect contact with live parts may cause serious injury or death.Work on live parts should only be carried out by qualified electricians.
IMPORTANT!Before opening the device, make sure that any water that might be lying on thehousing is wiped off. If you dont take this precaution, water can run over the edgeinto the device and damage the electronic parts.
When calibrating, it is necessary to have a comparison liquid available. For the monitorOMD-11 this is a Formazin-in-water solution with a concentration of 100 FTU (FormazinTurbidity Units). A suitable calibration set can be ordered specially under the Article No.51108EM002.
10.4.1 Switch off the power supply and stop the water inflow.
10.4.2 Open up the device and remove the front plate. Pull the printed circuit board
forward a little till the jumper J1 is accessible.10.4.3 Set the jumper J1 to its other position, so that the centre pin is now jumpered to
the one on the other side of it.
10.4.4 Replace the front plate and switch the power on. "CA now appears in the dis-play and the device is in the alarm state.
10.4.5 Carefully clean the sample tube with clean water and the sort of brush suitablefor cleaning bottles, as described in Section 12.
10.4.6 Empty the sample tube and fill it with a 100 FTU Formazin solution (A suitablecalibration set can be ordered specially under the Article No. 51108EM002.). It isnecessary, under certain circumstances, to fill the tube twice with the Formazinsolution to exclude the possibility of dilution by any water which may be present.
10.4.7 When you have made sure that the correct Formazin solution is in the device, press the keys " !" and " #" at the same time. There now appears in the dis-play 16 1 and the device is calibrated anew.
10.4.8 Now proceed as described in Section 7.4.

11.3 Exchange Parts Service
11.3.1 General
Our equipment undergoes strict quality controls before leaving the factory and iscalibrated according to the IMO specifications.
11.3.2 Exchange Equipment Service
If, in spite of the care mentioned above, it should come to an equipment failure,we recommend you to order a complete exchange monitor from us.
This ensures that, after the exchange, you have a monitor on board that hasbeen overhauled and tested in our factory.
The defective device which has been replaced should then be sent back to usimmediately.
If you return the defective monitor to us within a reasonable period of time (30days), RWO will only charge for the repair and transport costs. Otherwise wemust charge the full sum shown on the invoice which accompanies the ex-change monitor we send to you.
Experience has shown that this offers the customer the most reasonable priceand ensures at the same time that a device is employed which meets the IMOspecifications.
11.3.3 Exchange of electronic components
Because of small variations in the characteristics of the same type of compo-nent, it is recommended to calibrate the Oil monitor after repair and replacementof such components (except for relays, fuses, etc.).
Otherwise it can come to faulty display values and, if the display value is verylow, to exceeding the allowable limit of oil in water.
For the above reasons, we recommend you to order to an exchange unit fromus.
