Bill’s Blog

Well, editor Neville has requested my last Presidents Contribution to his excel-lent monthly Newsletter. It is over to Richard to do his “Thing” for the next 12 months.

During the last month- the Club put in a good attendance at the Inner Wheel Quiz at West Moors. Martin Stewart was an excellent and entertaining speaker at Charter Night. (Slightly less formal than one or two members would have liked!) It was good to see the District Governor and the Presidents of Wimborne and Parley and of course our celebrated Honorary Member Sarah Farmer. It was our 41st anniversary by the way. I am not sure how it happened but we had an attend-ance of some 45 to hear Rotarian Martin Fielding entertaining us with his veteri-nary reminiscences. An excellent evening. Three of our members in association with the District Governor and District Officers had the privilege of entertaining the RIBI President Eve Conway at an informal dinner at Cobham’s. An interest-ing and informative exercise

Briefly reflecting on the last Year I get the impression that we have not done a lot of exciting new Charity work but nevertheless have raised a few pounds by means our traditionally normal activities. I believe though we have had a number of excellent and entertaining speakers at our Wednesday evening meetings due of course entirely to Mike Sismey’s efforts. I understand he is continuing! I am sure this has improved our weekly enjoyment and fellowship. A good “Find” this year was Charlie and Fiona who have already thrown themselves enthusiastically into our Clubs activities and are also very committed for the future. It was good to welcome our new (younger!) Member Keith Adams.

A very busy month coming up starting with the first meeting of the New Com-mittees who have to sort out their programs for presentation to New Council and Club Assembly for the forthcoming year. The following week we have Kids Out and of course the visit by some nine Dublin Members with the various associated activities organised by Mike Fenner. Of course the annual Golf Day and Fete on the Field. I will be handing over to Richard at the first meeting in July. All the best to him. It was good and a privilege to have the honour of leading the Rotary Club of Ferndown for a third time and I would like to thank all members for their advice, encouragement and support.

Have a good new “Year”. Cheers. Yours in Rotary. Bill

INNER WHEEL CLUB of FERNDOWN

At our annual dinner meeting which includes guests, we were entertained and informed this year by Trevor Sapey who spoke to us about the 'Mary Rose Museum'.

He was noticeably different from the rest of us in that he was suitably dressed in the costume of the time. His subject was very interesting and to add to this he brought along a number of artefacts which had been rescued from the ship.

Our Annual Quiz was pleasingly well attended and raised the grand total of £916 all of which will be donated to our President's special charity and other local charities we are supporting this year.

At our recent Business Meeting the club was presented with a banner from our 'Sister Club' in Ips-wich Australia together with a 'Thank you' card signed by all the members present then in re-sponse to a beautiful card designed by our Sheila Smith and signed by our members on hearing the sad news that the club was closing at the end of this Inner Wheel year. The members were delight-ed with our card and it will be on show at the last meeting in June when all former members will, as far as possible, be present.

A SENIORS PERSPECTIVE OF FACEBOOK. For those of my generation who do not, and cannot, comprehend why Facebook exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them the "thumbs up" and tell them I like them. And it works just like Facebook. I already have four people following me: two police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist.

DOREEN'S DIARY ON A CRUISE SHIP DEAR DIARY - DAY 1 All packed for the cruise ship -- all my nicest dresses, swimsuits, short sets. Really, really exciting.

Our local Red Hat chapter - The Late Bloomers decided on this "all-girls" trip. It will be my first one, - and I can't wait! -------------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 2 All day at sea, beautiful. Saw whales and dolphins. Met the Captain today -- seems like a very nice man. -------------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 3 At the pool today. Did some shuffleboard, hit golf balls off the deck. Captain invited me to join him at his table for dinner. Fellt honoured. and had a wonderful time. He is very attractive and attentive. ---------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 4 Won £800.00 in the ship's casino. Captain asked me to have dinner with him in his own cabin. Had a scrumptious meal complete with caviar and champagne. He asked me to stay the night, but I declined. Told him I could not be unfaithful to my husband. -------------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 5 Pool again today. Got sunburned, and I went inside to drink at piano-bar, stayed there for rest of day. Captain saw me, bought me several large drinks. Really is quite charming. Again asked me to visit his cabin for the night. Again I declined. He told me, if I did not let him have his way with me, he would sink the ship... I was shocked. -------------------------------------------------------------- DEAR DIARY - DAY 6 Today I saved 2600 lives.

Charles Rolls Aviation Pioneer A talk by Steve Robson

In addition to being a motorist pioneer, Rolls was also an avid aviator. In 1903, he helped create the Royal Aero Club and became the second person to gain the license to fly from the Club. One year before he met Royce, he won

the Gordon Bennett Gold Medal for carrying out the longest single flight. He was also a balloonist and made more than 170 ascents with a balloon. Before the pro-duction of Rolls-Royces even properly started, Rolls became increasingly interested in avi-ation and tried to persuade Royce to develop a design for aero-engine which, however, the latter refused. In 1909, Rolls bought Wright Flyer aircraft with which he made over 200 flights. One year later, he became the first person to make a non-stop double flight across the English Channel for which he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Aero Club. However, only one month after his successful crossing of the English Channel, he was killed in an air crash during a flying display at Hengistbury Air Field Bournemouth when the tail of his Wright Flyer broke off during the display and become the first Briton to die in a plain crash. He was only 32 years old when he died.

Climbing Kilimanjaro By Harry Worth

The Club was given an insight to how much training was required to clime Kilimanjaro, but Harry never told us why anyone would wish to, just getting to the base of the mountain was hard enough, never mind climbing it. Still for Harry it was Worth it, (forgive my pun). For us it was an insight to those people some with severe disabilities who made the climb.

Well done Harry

“Dorset’s James Herriot” A funny and entertaining talk by Martin Fielding about his time as a Vet nary Surgeon and the things that could go wrong and the things that did ended May’s meetings on a high note. Martin’s presentation was excellent , as was his movements describing some of the an-tics people used to explain what was wrong with their Pets. Though if anyone came in half way through his presentation and heard him talking about artificial Vaginas and Electric Stimulators they would not have thought it was a Rotary meeting, or maybe the would. Still it was a great talk and Martin gave his Fee of £50 to Julia’s House on behalf of Rotary

One of they many Charities Ferndown Rotary support, at present Orbis’s Flying Eye Hospital is in Vietnam treating Children who have urgent eye conditions and holding training sessions for local eye teams and health workers. It is good to know and see our money working.

THE INNER WHEEL CLUB of FERNDOWN

This year the District holiday Break for Carers, held at the Ullswater Hotel in Bournemouth was blessed with good weather.

Six ladies were able to take advantage of the opportunity of a time of respite for themselves. This always proves to be a time of bonding for them as a group and although tentative at the first meet-ing soon were relaxing and enjoying themselves in each others company.

Different clubs provided 'days out' or evening entertainment during the week and our day was Wednesday. A very successful 'fund raiser' for the club was a 'Gardens Open' day held at the home of friends of Ann and Paul Edwards in Poole.

Sadly the day was rather overcast and did offer a few drops of rain during the afternoon but not enough to deter many ladies from our and other clubs including District Chairman Linda from en-joying a pleasant afternoon wandering around a really beautiful garden.

Armed with a printed copy of the history and layout of the garden which was started in1967 and has grown over the years the walk started right at the front gate and took us through a wisteria archway up to a very full and well attended vegetable area, around various paths amongst numer-ous flower beds, shrubs and trees as well as waterfalls appearing through the foliage from time to time.

Our visit concluded with a lovely cream tea and we were well set up for the journey home.

Charter Night

The evening started with Keith Adams reading “The Objects of Rotary” with Richard Giles reading Our Charter. Our guest speaker Martin Srewart of Stewarts Garden Centers gave a brilliant talk on the history of his Family Business starting with his Great Grandfather moving from Scotland to Ferndown in1742 to the present day 375 years later. It was one of the best talks we have had this Rotary Year. Many thanks to our Speaker Finder Mike Sismey. The Evening was well attended, and guests included District Governor Chris Slocock and South today Weather Girl Sarah Farmer.

Wimborne Rotary’s World Record Attempt A good turnout from the Club helped Wimborne to succeed in their attempt to gain a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the” Longest Human Representation of a Text” which told of Rotary’s aim of eliminating the World of Polio. I arrived early and was talked into helping with the Registration of participants, which included The President of RIBI and the Dorset Carnival Queen. It was a great day but I am afraid that George Phillips found the walk from the Allendale Centre to the Playing Fields a bit too much. Poor Lad.

The Object of Rotary The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and fos-ter: 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. 2. High ethical standards in business and professions, and the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life. 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “Four-Way Test” First: Is it the truth Second: Is it fair to all Concerned? Third: Will it build goodwill and better friendships Fourth: Will it be beneficial to all concerned
