We are entering Week 6 of this 11 week term, and all students in all subjects should be experiencing productive teaching and learning in the classroom. The Year 7 Camp went well last week. All students I spoke with said they loved it, with many agreeing that the best part was the flying fox! Thank you to the staff who supervised the camp. Overnight excursions require a lot of commitment, especially from staff who give up extra time to ensure students get a valuable experience. The Year 7 Camp is a significant step in the induction for Year 7 students into high school, with many gaining in confidence and feeling increasingly at ease with high school. If your child is loving high school, that is fantastic, and we hope this continues for the next six years! If you or your child are having particular concerns, please do contact the school so that we can do our Page 1 best to assist. Everyone transitions differently to high school, and we don’t want people “soldiering on” in silence when there is a lot the school may be able to help with. Parent/Teacher interviews are this week, and I look forward to parents and students having a formal opportunity to receive feedback from teachers, and to discuss the year ahead. Parents, please remember that teachers can be contacted at any time throughout the year if you have questions or wish to discuss your child’s learning. Teachers are encouraged to contact parents when necessary – particularly if there are concerns over how a student is tracking in a subject. Ideally there are no significant surprises at parent/teacher night. Parents, it can be an interesting activity to ask your child, “What will your teacher say when we meet this week?” Again, your child should be able to give you a general Principal Year 7 Camp Monday 2 March 2020 Term 1 Week 6A BILLABONG HIGHLIGHTS

indication of how they are tracking. Once you get past the “I dunno” answer (for some), it can make for a positive reflective conversation. Now that everyone should be well and truly settled into school, the expectations surrounding student responsibilities are clear. A particularly fundamental expectation is that students are where they are supposed to be at all times. If students are out of class they need a note, and a good reason to be out of class. Students are reminded that the same expectation exists for Period 6 Thrive classes, and there should be no wandering in between classes or activities. While some seniors do not always have timetabled classes throughout the day, they are expected to be studying in the library when they are not timetabled to class. Executive staff have committed to following up senior students and contacting parents if senior students are not meeting expectations.A reminder that Year 7 students are to return their Special Religious Education Page 2

(SRE) participation note to the front office if they haven’t done so. If you require a new note, please see the front office.Mr K. WawszkowiczPrincipal Year 7 Camp On the 25th, 26th and 27th of February, 54 Year 7 students attended their first camp at The Great Aussie Holiday Resort. Throughout the three days students participated in a variety of activities that included flying fox, rock climbing, canoeing, team games, archery, bush hut building and an obstacle course. The students formed many new friendships over the time period and participated well in all activities, each student had a positive mindset and were encouraging when others faced fears in the activities. A big thank you to the staff that attended, these camps wouldn’t run without them volunteering their time. Rachael Squire Year 7 Year Advisor
