Reaching for the HeightsMINISTER FOR EDUCATION AND DEPUTY PREMIER VISIT On Friday May 25, during Education Week, the Minister for Education, Mr James Merlino, visited Bimbadeen to see how our building project was going and to hear the story of our building journey thus far. The last time Mr Merlino visited was in 2014, before he was in government. The Minister was met by our Student Leaders whom he apologised to for the fact that they have been waiting for our new buildings for a long time and will not be here to enjoy them! He was impressed with the works but most impressed with how our school was managing the challenges of working around a building site. He had great understanding of the parking challenges that the staff, parents and community are coping with and supported our promotion of active travel to alleviate the congestion in front of the school. Mr Merlino did not try to justify the indefensible Government policy that precludes the installation of air conditioners in new school building constructions in Melbourne however did listen well and understood why we want climate control in the new classrooms. He did not give us any money to do this however! He said that he would love to come back when we have moved into Stage 1 and during the construction of Stage 2. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONTINUED

BUILDING PROGRAM UPDATE

The building is coming along really well with painting happening now and the next stage is to have all of the timber joinery installed. We are assured by the builder that they are still on target to for us to be moving in during the week of July 23 to 28, week 2 of next term.

We will be looking for a team of volunteers to help with this move so if you think you may have some time to spare in that week please let the

office know or speak to Ray Legione who will be co-ordinating the move.

I will post some current photos on our school Facebook page of the latest work.

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEW BOOKINGS

One of the most important aspects of our teaching and learning partnership are the parent-teacher interviews we hold at the end of Term 2 each year. These will be held in the last week of term from Monday June 25 to Thursday June 28. This year parents will book interview times online through the Sentral parent Portal.

You will need to be registered with Sentral to make interview booking.

If you have misplaced your individual access code that was sent home earlier in the year or are having trouble registering please contact our Sentral co-ordinator, Melinda Ruscitti. The best way is via email at

[email protected]

Bookings will be open for one week from 3:30PM on

Friday June 15 until 3:30PM on Friday June 22.

Please make a note or put a reminder in your phone so that you don’t miss out on an appointment time that suits your family. BIMBADEEN SHOWCASE AND OPEN NIGHT

We had one of our most successful Showcase and Open Nights last week with more than 220 families visiting our school. Thank you to the children who performed during the Showcase and to the teachers who organised the program and also made the classrooms look great for the visitors.

If you missed out on coming along and would still like to visit our school, or you know of someone who would like to visit our school,

every day is open-day here and I love to show visitors around, including taking them into the classrooms.

Please contact the office and we will arrange this or speak to your child’s teacher and they will arrange the most suitable time.

CHINA SISTER-SCHOOL VISIT – HOMESTAY HOSTS

Children from our sister-school will be visiting us in early August. We have some vacancies for home-stay hosts. If you are interested in being more closely involved in this sister-school exchange program please get in touch with Cath Buckland who will provide you with more information.

YEAR 3/4 SCIENCE EXPO

It was great to see the excitement on the faces of the children as they presented their Science Experiments this week during the Science Expo. (Elsewhere in today’s Blaze you will find some photos and comments from the children.) The outstanding work that the Year 3/4 teachers do in teaching the children about Science really comes together with the presentation day and it is always a highlight. I am sure that some of these

children will go on to pursue further study in Science and some will even make a career out of it. I hope that they will remember their time as 9 and 10 year olds doing science experiments at Bimbadeen.

AEROBICS TEAMS

This Sunday our Aerobics teams are competing in the State finals of the Victorian Schools Aerobics Competition. We wish them all the very best and will put photos and a report on our Facebook page and in the next Bimbadeen Blaze. OSHCLUB NEWS

The accessibility work on the OSHClub building has been completed which has made it wheelchair friendly with a ramp and refurbished toilets. This means that the before and after school care programs and the forthcoming vacation care program will all now operate out of the OSHClub building near the basketball court.

I thank the children, families and staff for their patience and flexibility whilst this work has been happening and

they have been operating out of the BER building.

C.S.E.F (CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSION FUND)

Applications for 2018 CSEF funding closes Friday 29th June. Please make sure if you haven’t applied as yet you do this as soon as you can - this is the last chance for 2018 funding coming into the school for your child. Again, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to be in touch with me. Bren.

Our Showcase before Open Night was a great success last week with performances from three aerobics teams, our choir and percussion groups, a group of circus performers and Chinese Dancers.

An extra special mention must be made to the students who performed solo. Three of our 2017 poetry competition winners, Kaydee from 5MF, Ashlee and Matilda from 3/4C recited their poems. Tahlia from 6MS played keyboard and Jake and Myah from 5SB played guitar.

It was a great evening to show current and prospective members of our school community some of the programs we offer, and the talented children we have here at Bimbadeen.

Many thanks to all the Bimbadeen students and families who supported our annual Book Fair. It was wonderful to see so many children excited whilst browsing the collection and writing wish lists hoping to make a purchase. We sold $3776 worth of books which gave us a commission of $1132 to spend on books for our own library.

Again thank you and Happy Reading!
