“My Path to the Board Room”

Ever considered sitting on a board one day?

On June 22, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., Women In BIO will present a panel of Board Room Ready program graduates for a discussion

of the career and personal paths each followed to achieve her goal of sitting on a corporate board.

Among the questions our panelists will discuss are: When did you consider being on a board? What advice would you give

women in the early to middle stages of their careers who want to sit on a board? What do you know now that you wish you had

known earlier in your career? How did you become a leader in your field?

Please join us at the BPI Theatre, on the BIO convention Exhibit Floor, as WIB President and Panel Moderator, Dawn

Hocevar, leads a panel of distinguished women including Theresa Matkovits, Senior Vice President, Head of Drug

Development at ContraVir Pharmaceuticals; Jennifer Carver, Chief Operating Officer at La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company; and

Susan Dexter, Managing Partner at the Latham BioPharm Group for a discussion of the paths each took to the board room.

About Our Chapter

Atlanta is the home of the Centers for Disease Control and a number of prominent academic research centers including Emory

University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse Medical School, Yerkes National Primate Research Center, and Georgia

State University. The nearby University of Georgia and Georgia Regents University contribute to this research climate, along

with our highly prized hospitals and the network of trained hospital staffers, nurses and doctors who conduct clinical trials for

pharmaceutical companies. Atlanta is the regional hub for hospital technology and medical device industries, and is the home of

a burgeoning biotech industry that some have likened to a potential “Silicon Valley” of Biotechnology.

The Atlanta chapter of Women In Bio was founded in 2012 to cater to women in the burgeoning life sciences sector here. WIB-

Atlanta provides women a space to interact, and exchange information and ideas, through a wide range of social gatherings and

educational workshops. Our membership base includes women researchers, sales, law professionals, business, technology

transfer specialists, supportive staff, policy experts, doctors, medical/science communicators, educators, and other experts.

Young Women In Bio Presents “Science Careers and Life in the Lab at Pfizer CTI”

On April 13, 2017, Pfizer’s Center for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) in Boston hosted a Young Women In Bio event for a group of

middle school girls. The event kicked off with a lab tour and hands-on lab experiment during which the girls learned how to make

“slime.” The group also played a Drug Discovery Game, led by Sara Green and Janet Buhlmann, during which they learned

how much time and money goes into taking a drug from first discovery in the lab to the market. After the game, the girls

enjoyed some pizza while listening to some inspiring Pfizer CTI employees who shared stories about their individual career

paths - both conventional and non-conventional!

WIB-Philadelphia Metro Hosts a Women’s History Month Panel Discussion with Industry Leaders

On March 29, 2017, the WIB-Philadelphia Metro chapter celebrated Women’s History Month with a jam-packed event focused

on obstacles women face in their daily lives. Attendees enjoyed food and cocktails from the Bonefish Grill and had a chance to

network and mingle with each other. We had several guests and brand new members join us in this nearly sold out event!

Chapter President Dunni Odumosu welcomed all of us to get our event started! Once Melissa Dowd, of the chapter

Programming Committee, introduced our Moderator and panelists, the rest of the session flew by with laughter, emotions, and

great advice. Read the entire article!

Panelists (left to right) Laura Conour, Pamela Nichols, Moderator Michelle Grant (DeNigris), Megan Weisheipl, Dr. Ruth

Ann Subach, and Denise D'Andrea gave attendees plenty of takeaways from the evening’s discussion.

Featured Chapter Leader - Lisa Fry, Programming Chair

Lisa Burgese Fry is the Director of Professional Services at Azzur, which provides consulting and direct placement to life

science companies from Discovery to Delivery. Lisa works directly with life science decision makers to

implement key strategic initiatives through consulting, direct placement, and training tools to improve

business performance and achieve business goals. She has over 20 years of project management and

business development experience, and holds a B.S from Philadelphia University and an M.B.A. from

Eastern University. Lisa volunteers her time not only to her children’s school organizations and JRA of

Southern New Jersey, to deliver food to those in need, but also serves as WIB-Philadelphia Metro’s

Program Chair. Since our chapter’s launch, Lisa has been committed to helping women define their

professional and personal development by hosting programs that all of us share the appetite for - from meeting the author of

GRIT, Angela Duckworth, to honoring a panel of women in science for Women's History month. WIB Programming has been

very exciting over the past months, and Lisa cannot wait for the upcoming events this year.

WIB Pittsburgh Holds Entrepreneurship Workshop #1: “Intellectual Property”

On April 6, 2017, WIB-Pittsburgh and Pepper Hamilton LLP came together to organize an intellectual property panel discussion

and workshop at the Pepper Hamilton location in Downtown Pittsburgh. The panelists included Pepper Hamilton attorneys N.

Nicole Stakleff, Aparna Nemlekar, Pierre E. Queiroz de Oliveira, and Melissa A Mares, who covered the basics about

intellectual property, business formation, and founder contributions for any start-up. In addition, Ketaki Desai, the Executive

Director at eCenter@LindenPointe, talked about her experiences of starting her own companies and gave the attendees tips

about what to do and what not to do. At the end of the session, attendees had the chance to network with the panelists while

enjoying great food and drinks, allowing them to learn more about the legal aspects of starting their own companies. A great

thank you to Pepper Hamilton LLP and Jennifer Kuban, their Director of Marketing, for organizing and hosting the event.

Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion at the Carnegie Museum of Art

During this April 20, 2017, pop-up social event, WIB-Pittsburgh members and guests joined a tour of the innovative fashion

exhibit, “Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion,” at the Carnegie Museum of Art. Attendees marveled at the use of 3D printing

and creative polymers that fashion designer Iris van Herpen uses to engineer striking futuristic clothing designs. Her work is

inspired by neuroscience and microbes, science fiction, and the environment. This exhibit is appropriate for the city of

Pittsburgh. We are a city of creative makers and fabricators, a growing center of technology and robotics, and a supportive

place for artists. A combination of Pittsburgh’s growing tech sector and its industrial past uniquely positions the city to

appreciate van Herpen’s designs. She pushes the limits of traditional materials and leans on new materials when that is not

enough. She employs new techniques to wring seemingly impossible forms out of traditional fabrics and common objects.

Women in STEM fields can learn from van Herpen’s innovative mindset to push beyond known limits and think far outside the

box.

Career Success” Event

On March 14, 2017, as part of Women’s History Month, the Women In Bio-RTP chapter held an engaging workshop on “How to

Ace Your Informational Interview for Career Success.” The workshop was lead by career coach Tracy Jenkins, Ph.D., ACC.

With an extensive background in academics and coaching, Tracy has served in various roles as an advisor, professional mentor,

professor, and academic coach. All of the skills required for these roles were definitely seen by the attendees. Dr. Jenkins

provided steps on how to explore the types of work that interest you, decide whom to interview, how to request an informational

interview, how to prepare, and what to do after that interview. There were also insightful questions and real world scenarios given

by different members and attendees, describing their experiences with informational interviewing. At the end of the workshop,

Dr. Jenkins wanted the attendees to realize that "Informational interviewing, when used deliberatively and strategically, provides

the means to explore roles of interest that can lead to a job offer."

“Be Your Own Driving Force”

In honor of Women’s History Month, on March 30, 2017, WIB-Seattle hosted a talk by Sarah Schneider, creator, and CEO of

The Badassery Project. Over 80 women were in attendance for this deeply thought-provoking event at the gorgeous space of the

Women’s University Club. Sarah explained that, whether consciously or unconsciously, most of us live by sets of rules or

mindsets that can often be harmful to our success. She shared that one such “rule” she had was “money will make you happy”;

other audience members shared that they were taught to “be nice,” or “not stand out.” Sarah encouraged us to challenge these

mindsets, and asked us to think about how we might live differently by not following these so-called rules. Read the entire

WIB-Washington DC/Baltimore YWIB Presents “Spring into STEM – a High School CareerConference"

Young Women In Bio is making a national effort to highlight STEM for young women through a series of events across the

nation during the month of April, under the banner of “Spring into STEM.” The WIB-Washington DC/Baltimore YWIB is pleased

to present the keynote event on April 28, 2017. Our panel will consist of female leaders in science, who will speak on preparing

for science-based careers. Join our industry experts as they discuss lessons they have learned along the way to establishing

their own successful high-profile careers. Our speakers will offer varied perspectives on the subject, ranging from medical, to

regulatory, to policy and more. Following the panel session there will be a breakout session on strategies for college

admissions. Space is limited, be sure to register early. Registration enters you in a raffle for some great prizes – must be

present to win.
