Biology Paper 3 [4551/3]
1. Diagram 1 shows an experiment set-up to investigate the rate of transpiration of a plant under different light intensity. At the beginning of the experiment, the leafy shoot is placed at a distance of 50 cm from the light source (table lamp). The time taken for the air bubble to travel a distance of 10 cm is recorded. The experiment is repeated by putting the leafy shoot at a distance of 40 cm, 30 cm and 20 cm from the light source. The results of the experiments are shown in Table 1.

(d) State the hypothesis for this experiment. _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ [3 marks] (e) (i) Based on Table 1, construct a table and record all the data collected in the experiment. Your table should have the following titles: •Distanceofleafyshootfromlightsource •Lightintensity •Timetakenfortheairbubbletotraveledadistanceof10cm •Rateoftranspiration Use the formula:
Rate of transpiration = Distance traveled by air bubble (cm) /time taken (min)
Light intensity = 1/distance (cm)

2. Due to numerous complaints received from residents about water pollution in rivers all over Malaysia, the Department of Environment (DOE) had investigated the water pollution level in three different locations.
Three water samples (W, X and Y) are obtained from the three different rivers all over Malaysia.
Design a laboratory experiment to investigate the water pollution level of the water samples from the three locations. The planning of the experiment should include the following aspects:
• Problemstatement • Hypothesis • Variables • Listofapparatusandmaterial • Experimentalprocedure • Presentationofdata
