Bioethics And Stem Cell Research

Page 2: Bioethics

Bioethics are moral and ethical choices faced in medical research and in the treatment of patients. Bioethics are largely involved with advanced technology.

What is Bioethics?

Page 3: Bioethics

Bioethical topics include Cryonics, which is when a person is frozen in hopes of being revived and cured from an illness or to simply be brought back to life.

Bioethical Topics

Stem Cell Research Another bioethical topic is Stem Cell

Research. But just what are Stem Cells all about?

Page 6: Bioethics

Stem Cells are naturally occurring in the human body.

They repair and revive other cells to replace dead tissue, and can divide to take the place of cells that have specific functions.

About Stem Cells

Page 7: Bioethics

Stem Cells can be used to repair a multitude of problems and have been used by scientists to help with the effects of:

Alzheimer's

Heart Disease

Spinal Cord Injuries

What Can Stem Cells Be Used For?

Page 8: Bioethics

Scientists believe that Stem Cells can be used to effectively treat:

Birth Defects

And may even be used to defeat Cancer.

Other Stem Cell Progress

Page 9: Bioethics

Stem cell research can be done with adult stem cells, however embryonic stem cells have proven to be more effective.

Some claim that destruction of the embryo is the only way to obtain these stem cells, but there are others who

dispute this claim.

Controversy With Stem Cell Research

Page 10: Bioethics

Religious beliefs have also come into play with the debate over Stem Cell Research.

Some believe it is playing God.

Other Arguments about Stem Cell Research

The Debate As of today the debate over Stem Cell

Research goes on. With another upcoming Presidential Election in 2012, who knows what the future will bring.

What are some other bioethical topics ?

If faced with a bioethical issue in the workplace that you had strong feelings about, what would you do?

Is there anything you would add to this PowerPoint about bioethics or bioethical topics?

How do you feel about stem cell research?

Would you work for a lab or a medical institution participating in stem cell research? Why or why not.
