Biological and Medical Research: First year Theme 1: Cells and Tissues Supportive courses: Biology 1 Chemistry 1 Physics Basic Mathematics skills Basic Dutch language skills Practical assignment: During this practical assignment you will learn to safely work in a laboratory. You will learn how to use a laboratory notebook as well as how to use a microscope. During this course, you will study various organisms and tissues such as: The rat (overview and specific tissues) Plant tissues Micro-organisms (bacteria and yeast) The practical course will end with an oral presentation that will be prepared in small groups of students. Theme 3: Molecular biology 1 Supporting courses: Biology 3 Chemistry 3 Bio-analysis Practical assignment: This theme is about the building blocks of life: proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids. During the practical course you will learn new techniques, such as isolating DNA, “cutting” DNA and visualizing DNA and proteins (by means of electrophoresis) and the amplification of DNA (by means of a polymerase chain reaction). During the last two weeks of the course, you will work on your own project together with a small group of students. For this project, you will apply your skills of your newly acquired techniques. Theme 2: Cell Metabolism Supporting courses: Biology 2 Chemistry 2 Statistics 1 Presentation skills Practical assignment: In this theme you will learn how to work safe with humane cell lines and micro-organisms. You will learn about the habitat that bacteria thrive in. In addition, you will investigate different species of bacteria and learn about their properties (Gram character, shape). As a project group, you will grow a bacterium under specific growth conditions, which is different for each couple. You will follow the growth, the substrate consumption and the production of end products. At the end, you will report the optimal growth conditions for the bacteria. Theme 4: Genetics Supporting courses: Biology 4 Statistics 2 Math Bioinformatics 1 Practical assignment: This theme is mainly about cell division, genes, genetic variation and inheritance. During this lab course, you will investigate how often a certain DNA sequence (Alu repeat) is present in your own class of students. In addition, you will also look at the frequency of certain characteristics (such as eye colour / loose or fixed earlobe). Using the DNA of the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) you will try to link a phenotypic property to the genotype. You will investigate human chromosomes as well using various microscopic analysis techniques. The theme ends with an ethical forum discussion.

Biological and Medical Research: Second yearTheme 5: Microbiology

During this theme you will learn how to isolate and identify bacteria.

Supporting courses:• Biochemistry 1• Biomethods 1• Microbiology 1• ReportwritingskillsPracticalassignment:Bacteria can be found everywhere. In the soil, in fresh water as well as salt water and of course within your body. Mostbacteriafulfillusefulfunctionswhileotherbacteriaareabletoharm us. During this theme, you will learn how to isolate and identify bacteria. You will isolate bacteria from soil samples as well as from various food products. In addition, you will work on your own project withafellowstudent.Anexampleofsuchaprojectisthesearchfor new antibiotics made by soil bacteria. Although the chance of succeeding is small, we hope to identify a new type of antibiotics. At theendofthistheme, youwillwriteascientificreportaboutoneofyourexperiments(inDutch).
