Geography Knowledge Organiser
Global locations
Biome- a large scale ecosystem with similar plants and animalsLongitude- lines dividing the earth (up/down)Latitude- lines dividing the earth (side-to-side)Equator- the central line of latitude (closest point to the sun)Tropical rainforest- biome with dense vegetation (Brazil)Temperate deciduous- biome with deciduous woodland (UK)
Physical processes (rainforest)
Flora- plantsFauna- animalsAdaptations- Changes in flora/fauna to survive in a locationNutrient cycle- The process of recycling nutrients in ecosystemsDecomposition- The process of flora/fauna decaying into the soilLeaf litter- fallen vegetation which lies on the groundHumid- Warm and wet climateSloth- slow camouflaged animal
Poison dart frog- small frogwhich spits poison
Physical processes (temperate)
Lose leavesin autumn
Leaf litter on ground
Leaf litter decays slowly
Broad, flat leaves
Grows slowlyover many years
Thicker soils asmore nutrient rich
Human uses & importance
Goods- products and items sourced from the rainforestServices- how the rainforest serves the planetClimate change- The change in global temperaturesFlooding- Excess water in the areaEconomy- Jobs and moneySocial- People and cultureEnvironmental- the flora and faunaResources- The materials produced by the planet
SustainabilitySustainability- The ability for a place to maintain its resources now and in the future
Evaluation- Positives and negatives of the different management methods
Logging and replanting- selective logging of mature trees ensures that the rainforest canopy is preserved.
Education- It is important that local people, businesses and politicians understand the true value of the tropical rainforest.
Ecotourism- this encourages sustainable tourism that creates jobs for local people whilst protecting the area
International agreements- agreements to protect tropical rainforests have been made between different countries through debt-for-nature swaps.

3 Questions - 3 Minutes
1. What does the word ‘climate’ mean?
2. What is the equator?
3. What do we mean by ‘ecosystem’?
![Page 6: Biomes - Our Lady of The Rosary RCVA Primary School](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022020702/61f9ced229babe442e6fb097/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Climate
The weather changes in different parts of the world. Where there are similar weather patterns this is known as a
climate.
At the top of the Earth there is an arctic climate and some of the coldest temperatures in the world are found here.
Temperate climates are found a bit further south, and as you approach the equator you find Mediterranean and
desert climates. Some of the hottest places on Earth are found here, and few people live in this climate.
Equator
The Equator is an imaginary circle around Earth. It divides Earth into two equal parts: the Northern Hemisphere
and the Southern Hemisphere. It runs east and west halfway between the North and South poles. The distance
around the Equator is about 24,900 miles (40,000 kilometers).
Ecosystem
An ecosystem is made up of all of the living and non-living things in an area. This includes all of the plants,
animals, and other living things that make up the communities of life in an area.
An ecosystem also includes nonliving materials—for example, water, rocks, soil, and sand. A swamp, an ocean, and
a forest are examples of ecosystems.

Big Question...
What and where
are biomes?

Stages of my own
knowledge...
I can describe what a
biome is
I can locate the tropical
rainforests and temperate
biome on a world map
I can link the location of
the biome to the climate
and distance from the sun.
What will I know...

A biome is a large region of Earth that has a certain climate and
certain types of living things. The plants and animals of each biome
have traits that help them to survive in their particular biome. ...
Each biome has many ecosystems.

Temperate Deciduous Forest Tropical Rainforest
There are two types of rainforests, tropical and temperate. Tropical rainforests are found
closer to the equator where it is warm. Temperate rainforests are found near the cooler coastal
areas further north or south of the equator. The tropical rainforest is a hot, moist biome where it rains all year long.

Main Biomes in the World
![Page 12: Biomes - Our Lady of The Rosary RCVA Primary School](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022020702/61f9ced229babe442e6fb097/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Latitude and longitude are a system of lines used to describe the location of any place on Earth.
● Lines of latitude run in an east-west direction across Earth. ● Lines of longitude run in a north-south direction.
How can we remember this?
Although these are only imaginary lines, they appear on mapsand globes as if they actually existed.

information click:
Lines of latitude and longitude are imaginary lines that you see on maps. They divide the world up so you can give an exact location. Latitude lines run from East to West (like the equator), and tell you how far North and
South you are, but longitude lines go from North to South (like the Greenwich Meridian) and tell you how
far East or West you are. They measure the angular position in degrees.
![Page 14: Biomes - Our Lady of The Rosary RCVA Primary School](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022020702/61f9ced229babe442e6fb097/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Think...
1. If you are at a “high latitude” what might the temperature be like?
2. If you are at a “low latitude” what might the temperature be like?

Go back to the coloured map and describe the location of each biome,
remember to include information about lines of longitude/latitude and
continents.
When thinking about latitude/longitude consider the following:
- What the lines are
- Which one is which
-What the lines are used for

South
