  • Our JourneyYou asked for it... So here it is. This, friends, is story of the origin of teenage venture called the FRiEnDz by teens, for teens all about teens. How did it all begin? What makes it special? Let us see...

The... Teenage!Teenage is very important part of human life. It is a stage when we leave our childhood and set foot in adulthood. What we become now shall be with us for rest of our lives. Our principles, thinking, beliefs, body everything. And that is why it is exciting... these 7 years of teens deciding rest of our lives. It is so exciting and fascinating to see what talent lies in teens today. Brilliance of Sun, Wisdom beyond comprehension, and much more... Alas! Half of it goes unexplored and passes unnoticed to the times when it can be of no use.

The FilmInspired by all the talent around and inside a guy dreamt of making a movie, Why a movie? is beyond scope of this article. There began the struggle or

should we say the adventure. If it was some developed city, making a mere movie wouldnt be a big thing. But in a small city in India, it was a big thing. In cozy winter afternoons, the script was written and all was set. And when it was about to began, all failed! Not

once not twice but 4 times! Last time when it failed... no one turned up on shooting location! The BirthThat couldve been the end, but it could not! Lessons were learned and now began the task to acquire support

  • for the movie. And to that necessity FRiEnDz the teenaged magazine was born. The 1st edition (or issue as it was called back then) took the whole month of May to prepare. And on 18th June it went live! (Hence marking our birthday).Word of mouth and social networks (orkut, facebook etc.) were the life line of the magazine. Which still remains so, we get more readers when our present readers refer us to others.

Whats special in us?Very next month July 2008 Issue was out featuring our first cover model Taramdeep Singh which set clear outline of magazine: It was not a celebrity gossip teen magazine, it

is not a magazine which searches for perfection, it wasnt too girly or boyish.

This magazine was to be voice of common teens, teens that have great potential. A magazine which presents teens as they are not as they should be, Taramdeep was no super-model of film star and none were those who followed; they are teens with dreams, teens who believe in themselves. Thanks to Nina Brar for inspiration.

    Team GrowsBy the time August

Health Special Issue came out, we had some very important members in our team Ex-Sub-Editor and Ex-Managing Editor: Anju Kalara, Advisor: Mr. Harinder Mohan Singh and Nina Brar and Ex-Fashion Editor: Parneet Sidhu. Then came the September 2008 Issue became so popular that we crossed bench mark of 1000 readers! We also had our 1st Brand Abassador Election and chose face of teen Gagandeep

    and Aikum.

A Domain Name!Till this time our presence was on a sub-domain: http://frndz.terapad.com and with release of October 2008 issue we had our own web identity:

http://thefriendz.biz The Google Advertisements on our website is our main source of income that could provide us the recourse to keep up the website.

Er...Then came a setback, due to lack of team effort and some wrong choices, we could not release magazine for next 2 months. But nevertheless, we came back with Winter 2008-09 Edition in January 2009 (Yea! Now we call them editions) which resulted in us topping Google search results. In February our readership crossed 1800 readers, and there was another dream set forth Universal Union. Yet

Do you have a foolproof business ideabut don't know how to execute sinceyou neither have the money nor theexperience? Worry not! Just contact a

startup service provider. It will nurture yourbig idea and help you launch your dreamproject.

One such well-known helper is MorpheusVenture Partners (MVP) and the good news isthat it's looking for big ideas from the City andthe region.

"Come to us if your venture is at the conceptstage. We will invest capital, in terms of time, expertise and manpower, and become a part ofyour team for six months. We will help youbuild business, launch you and then get out ofthe way," says Sameer Guglani, the company'sfounder, and a B.Tech from Thapar University.

The babies of MPV have become big namestoday. Intablogs, one of the world's topmost cit-izen journalism websites and blog networksrun by a 27-year-old from Shimla.

Deskaway, one of world's top companies thatenable small businesses and teams to organ-ise, manage and track their work online. SutraHR, a premier firm that hires people for start-up companies. Crederity which verifies identi-ties and credentials, including background, education, and employment history for compa-nies, job sites like Naukri.com and matrimoni-al sites like Simplymarry.com andCommonfloor, a site which help you connect toyour neighbours in your apartment block.

"We prefer working with young entrepre-neurs, particularly fresh college graduates.Over 60 per cent of our startup companies arerun by people below 30 years," says NandiniHirianniah, the company's partner, and an MSfrom Bangalore University.

If you are interested and you have a viableproject, Bangalore-based MPV is invitingapplications. "We plan to select seven to eight

new startups for two batches," says Sameer. "Agood business proposal arises out of a gap inthe market. But many times, the idea keepschanging and what is launched is differentform what one started with," says Nandini.

What MPV will gain out of helping a start-up is ownership of a small part of its equity. So if the company does well, MPV gets bigreturns. "But of all the startups we will help,35 per cent will fail, 35 per cent will give nega-tive returns and 30 per cent will give positivereturns. Of these, only 10 per cent will proba-bly become star performers and that's ourreward," says Sameer.

Sameer and Nandini, too, once had a startup Madhouse Media, India's first movie rentalcompany which was acquired bySeventymm in 2007.

DID YOU KNOW? Shyam Kaushal played body double forMithun Chakraborty and Sanjay Dutt

    Chandigarh, Thursday April 2, 2009

    4 City

Chandigarh girl Joanna Magee, an alumnusof St Stephen's School and a student of cos-metology, has just finished her shootingschedule for MTV Splitsville 2. Joanna

participated in the show and was also adjudged thequeen in the show, which gave her the power todump any boy on the show.

Back in Town, Joanna says, "I was selected forSplitsville Season I too but I couldn't accept itbecause I was not well at that time. But I auditionedfor Season II in Mohali and got selected." On thechanged format of the show, she adds, "Last year, 20girls were wooing two boys, this time there are ninegirls and nine boys. In fact, I have been selected thequeen after all the boys voted for me. Similarly, aking has also been chosen who has the power todump the girls. As the show progresses, another girlwill be selected as the queen and she would standopposite me. Out of the two of us whoever wins willbe the final winner. It is the same for the boys."

Joanna has earlier participated in Victoria Faceof the Year event where she was adjudged the sec-ond runner up. She adds, "I am just back from CasaColvale in Goa where the show was shot. I had funwhile shooting for the show. I made friends butonly with boys who were easy to get along withthan the girls, who had their own axe to grind."

Joanna is now all set to become a VJ and thentry her luck in Bollywood, her dream calling in life.

Sidharth, a Class XI student of New PublicSchool-18, runs the popular online teenmagazine, www.thefriendz.biz. The maga-zine is for teens and by teens, he says. "Wehave more then 4,000 readers. Most of them

are from Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Nagpur andLondon. We've readers from USA, UAE, Brazil,Canada, Egypt, etc. We want to present teens asthey are, not as they should be."

It all began then "I started the magazine in June 2008. I wanted to

make a movie on teenage life in India to show thatit's important to follow your passion and not the ratrace. I tried making the film a number of times butcouldn't! Then inspired by movie The Devil WearsPrada and the wonderful teens around me, I want-ed to start something big just for teens. So, Idesigned the site myself, with the help of onlinetutorials. FRiEnDz came to existence. Later othersjoined in. Anuj Kalra, Gaurav Bansal, HarinderMonah Singh, Parneet Sidhu, Jigyasa Labroo, SeifNasir and Tanya Oziel form the core team. We alsohave members from the USA, UK and UAE andwe're growing! (Most are high-school students likehim)."

Your inspirations "Teens are taking great interest. Most popular is

the 'Aspiration' section where teens become covermodels! You need not to be a zero size models to be

a star... we love us as we are! Then we haveBrand Ambassador Elections to select a teenwho'll represent the teen world for nextthree months. And we are making themovie, we are looking for more people tojoin and support us. I also blog at kingofficial.blogspot.com."

Future plans "We plan to get sponsors so that we can

expand and start paying our team members andmake teens a bit financially independent. We alsoplan to find teens with leadership qualities in citiesin different countries and make local teams. Thenwe plan to launch local supplements of magazinefrom these cities of world."

    (As told to Sourabh Gupta)

    Umpteen ideas

Shyam Kaushal from Hoshiarpur made inroads into Bollywoodas a stuntman and is now a name to reckon with. In City

In thick of actionNot just another

    brick in the wall

    Preet Onkar Singh

Apostgraduate in English literature fromGovernment College, Hoshiarpur, ShyamKaushal left for Mumbai in search of greenerpastures. Little did he know what was in storefor him till some young Punjabi lads working

as stuntmen in Hindi films showed him the way. Hejoined them and learnt the tricks of the trade underaction director Pappu Verma.

Success followed him soon after he got his independ-ent break as action director in Nana Patekar's Prahaarand that year, he also fetched an award for the best newaction director.

In fact, the action-packed list of recent films that hasKaushal's stamp runs long. Aa Dekhen Zara, SlumdogMillionaire, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, A Wednesday, Krissh,Om Shanti Om, Asoka and Lakshya, to name a few fromhis stable.

Now, he is looking forward to Akshay Kumar-starrerTasveer 8x10, My Name is Khan, Three Idiots, New York,Rajneeti and Kaminey.

Kaushal is in Town for the shooting Punjab 69, a filmbased on a folk story. Directed by O.B. Husain, painterM.F. Husain's son, the film is being shot aroundChandigarh by cameraman Sangeet Sivan. It starsAnurag Sinha and Sonal Chauhan. Kaushal is also doingaction sequences for Gurdas Maan's movie Sukhmani.

The action man lets us in on more on Wednesday The action sequences have undergone a transforma-

tion in current Hindi films, says Kaushal, adding: "Norevenge and dacoit films anymore. No cheating the audi-ence with duplicates anymore. Actors now devote time

to rehearsing action sequences and are ready to do anykind of stunt. Technology has given us an edge and thefreedom to create new things. Those Matrix effects thatyou see in a film come courtesy 'ramping', a techniquewherein 150 frames are shot per second."

Depending on the theme and texture of the film, theaction bit is decided, says Kaushal. "Like Slumdog was arealistic film, so the street action in it could not bedepicted with technology but content.

In a stylised film like Aa Dekhen Zara, one enhancesaction by capturing different angles. The upcoming filmTasveer 8X10, where Akshay is doing underwatersequences and jumps of a cliff, is fast-paced action," heelaborates.

His job is both tricky and risky. "It requires scriptreading, understanding the characterisation and direc-tor's vision and then getting into designing thesequences. Also, one has to look into safety measures, getting the camera placement right and finally helpingthe experts on the editing table to get the impact of ascene right," says Kaushal.

On the risk involved, he says, "It's a calculated one andit's only under unfortunate circumstances that you meetwith an accident. I have undergone a stomach recon-struction because I ignored an injury caused somewherein this profession." But he has no regrets, as in his pro-fession, he feels, "Sky is the limit and it's honesty thatpays."

Action is not just restricted to men. "Watch outPriyanka Chopra in Kaminey and Aishwarya Rai inRavana. They did action scenes after sessions of prac-tice," says Kaushal.

  • A 14 year old web designer, graphic designer, and entrepreneur and senior member of 9Media! He can code in C++ and Java, along with XHTML, CSS, and PHP.

About 9 Miles Media9 Miles Media is a graphic & web design group comprised of nine creative teenage entrepreneurs from all over the world.

What made you learn all these programming languages and

    designing stuff?

Personally, I was always attracted to computers and other electronic gadgets from a young age. I not only wanted to use those things, but produce some sort of software of my own. I learned Java and C++, then discovered that the Internet was a quickly-evolving platform, perhaps more so than the desktop apps market. So I started off with HTML and CSS last summer, and here I am.

    Your Inspirations

Some inspirations I have are Silicon Valley CEOs and leaders of internet

and computer companies, like Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Digg, etc. Ive always wanted to live in California Silicon Valley and found a company like those.

    Your Plans for the future

My plans for the future are not too planned out. Im hoping to start high school this fall and 4 years later attend college, perhaps with a major in computer science or related degrees. I hope to keep being involved in 9miles Media with my co-workers, who are all also great friends.

  • The HangoverRating: ***** (5/5)So your expecting your typical What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas flick. Four guys on a mission to have a night they will never forget [as well as never remember]. However, all hell breaks loose when they lose their soon-to-be-married friend Doug. As you can imagine, everything goes downhill from there. The script is flawless, giving us characters you deeply care about, and one-liners you wont soon forget. The cast,

consisting of relatively unknown actors, bring to life four very different and equally entertaining guys. If you are ready for a movie that will grab everything you expect from a Vegas movie and flip it upside-down, while continually pushing the envelope, The Hangover is for you. A truly heartfelt, uproariously funny, unforgettable film.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the SmithsonianBy Devin ChristensenPlot: Retired night guard, Larry Daley, returned to the Museum of Natural History to find that it was closing for renovations. Most of the exhibits, his friends, are being moved to storage area in the Smithsonian. Determined to save them, Larry goes to the museum and manages to break into the storage area. The problem is, King Kahmunrah was at war with the newly arrived exhibits. He

planned to steal the Tablet of Ahkmenrah and raise him army from the underworld. With Larrys new exhibit friends- including Amelia Earhart, General Custer, the Abe Lincoln memorial, and more- can he battle King Kahmunrah and his minions?Review: I thought that this was an ok movie. It was funny and all, but sequels are never as good as the original. Night at the Museum 2 is perfect for kids looking for a laugh, but I would not recommend it for adults. Ben Stiller did a great job along with Amy Adams. The good part is that there is a happy ending!

On the other hand, Marcus, an experiment of half man, half machine, seems to be the humans only chance to infiltrate Skynet. Will John Conner and Marcus ever shut down Skynet for good?

Review: I personally thought this was a great movie. It was packed with action and amazing special effects! Even for a person who hasnt seen the other Terminator movies, you will be immediately enticed by this film. The movie starred Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, and Helena Bonham Carter. So if you are looking for a movie full of action, Sci-Fi, trust issues, and some heavy machinery- check out Terminator Salvation!

  • Students at Work | The Financial Teens

More than half of those who are reading this are students and out of those hardly twenty percent have ever worked to earn. It is very common in western countries but as we move eastwards this is rarely seen. Is work culture right for students? Lets see...

What kind of work are students doing?

Students are taking up variety of jobs like serving in McDs, KFC or Burger King; working as helpers in fashion stores, supermarkets. Students are also working as skilled workers in wood workshops, as assistants of fashion/interior designers. And also as freelancers, even in recession there are plenty of options available. In fact, many people think that students have more options in recession as students can offer far more affordable substitution to costly professionals.

  • ProsNo doubt we need education to live a happy life but it is also true that much of our higher education aims at getting as a suitable job or giving as right skills for working. So why not start working when you are learning?

It is really hard for students to accommodate themselves in work culture just after completing their degree/diploma courses. Sometimes the work

culture is more of a big shock for students. No doubt many universities in UK and US offer sandwich courses where you work and study as part of course.

So it is good to learn while your learning is earning for you! Yeah! think again.

It is not about all about money, its also about how to work in team, how to go about real worlds cruel politics.

ConsMany people argue that students should only concentrate on their learning. Earning and work becomes too distracting. Also the pressure and work load is not healthy for their studies.

Many times students ignore their studies to earn more.

Also the political games are very common at workplaces and students being newest and most junior become most vulnerable.Students have more ability to learn so they progress faster and seeing this aged people arent happy! They try to pull you down. You may call them work-mates but it really is a bigger and crueler competition than at your school/collage. Legal formalities are there too!

...it is good to learn while your

    learning is earning for you!

...students ignore their studies to earn more.

  • FEED US BACK!Please do write us about how you like the magazine and what else do you want to read. Read more...

So it is up to students to decide weather they want to join the work culture or not. If you think you want to earn while learning go on. If you dont like taking orders from shouting kids at Burger King go than becoming a freelancer is nice option for you. Work as ghost writer if you are good at writing.

  • The Childrens Book by AS ByattThe Childrens Book is a work of huge ambition that follows the lives of two generations of a constellation of families living in the Kent countryside at the turn of the 20th century. It is a portrait of childhood at the end of the Victorian era, when children were starting to be treated as adults, and when adults, though they talked more openly about sex, tended to retreat into childhood. The novel centres around Olive Wellwood, a fairy tale writer, and her circle, which includes the brilliant, erratic craftsman Benedict Fludd and his apprentice Phillip Warren, a runaway from the poverty of the Potteries; Prosper Cain, the soldier who directs what will become the Victoria and Albert Museum; Olives brother-in-law Basil Wellwood, an officer of the

  • When Meeting Your Girlfriends Parents! | Relations by Aishwarya Sharma

So, youre planning to have a sneak peak into your girls house. Right? To meet her mom and dad of course, isnt it? Hmm scared huh? Dont really know what to do, and what to say? Well, that happens with everyone, you dont really have to worry, I know its different when you meet your BFFs parents, and completely different when you

meet your girlfriends parents. But heres the good news! Whenever theres a problem, FRiEnDz help you out, whether its related to friends or your girlfriends. And now, a girl is there to your rescue boys, she exactly knows what a girl wants and expects when her man comes to meet her parents. Here are some smart tips you need to follow while youre at it. Remember: when youre

    meeting your girlfriends parents:

  • Dont be a braggart!

Just stop showing off. We girls and our moms dont need a self centered and pompous ass! Just relax, keep it simple, no need to show that youre a stud. Her parents need to see their daughters boyfriend, not a terminator or something. You dont really need to brag about how many cars you have, how big your house is, or how many mobile phones youve changed so far. As for us, we already know that you have the trendiest collection of shoes from Reebok, and a brand new PlayStation2. We know how big your house is, and that clearly doesnt make a difference to us. So just stop acting stupidly and keep it simple.

    Dont dress up funnily!

Please please!! We know we told you that the gladiator shirt looks amazing on you, but the truth is that for mom and dad, it will be a blighted show! Wear a simple tee without anything offensive written on it. We dont want our parents to wonder what weirdoes weve brought for them to see. Just be sane enough to choose a sound dress code for yourself. No spiky hair, no heavy chains, no ripped or torn jeans, no funny logos or messages splashed on your shirt please

    Impress Dad and Help Mom

Moms and dads have the most amazing kind of sixth sense, especially when they beget daughters. So no unnecessary flattery please impress our dads by being politically correct, make it sound like a world peace summit, and help out moms by setting the table, washing the dishes, and helping out with the meal. Parents like those typically homely guys who show a sense of belonging towards their girls house. Praise moms style of cooking and dads knowledge at football, Obama, politics, or whatever! Express whatever knowledge you have, in an impressing yet humble way.

  • Dont crib about you Mom Dads messy ways!

Dude! We really dont care about why your dad didnt give you the latest videogame, or you mom didnt allow you to take the car out. Remember, theres another set of parents youre meeting right now, and the way you talk about your parents reflects how you think of your elders so you better not talk of how creepy your parents get sometimes... We know they do, but do you need to tell that to my parents?? No dear! Just keep your mouths shut on this; well hear your set of melodrama afterwards.

    Eat properly!

According to parents, table manners reflect how the upbringing of the child is at home. So in order to make a good impression, dont drop your food on the table, dont make funny sounds while youre at it, dont offer your hand for a handshake if the blot of mucus after a sneeze is on your hands, dont offer your food to your clothes as well [you know what I mean!!!!], just dont be an ogre, be a well bred cool dude and it should be as if youre having your food in front of Queen Elizabeth. Simply spick and span and impressive. We know you eat the way you do while youre with us, but theres a BIG difference between us and our parents boys.

    Dont be self conscious

We know this makes you a little nervous and all, but along with being manageable, you need to be original. Remember, we chose you for what you are, but the fact is that for parents, first impression is the last impression, so everything has to be perfect. But also remember, dont be fake, dont show unnecessary style. Just be calm, cool, and inoffensive. Thats it. These guys belong to another generation, but understand us better than we do. So just keep your cool.

  • Only by the night Kings of Leon

Bordering on their vintage Southern-infused garage rock influence, the Followill Brothers present their most impressive Record to date with Number 4,Only by the Night. From their 2003 stompy, moderately feisty debut,Youth and Young Manhood, theyve come a long long way, strengthening their stand in the New Rock scene, most

credits to Caleb Followills accentuated characteristic garble which with the years, has only gone better. So, what the quick, sharp 43 minute Record has to offer - The best of Calebs earthy growl till yet which is best seen in the first two singles off the album,Sex on Fire and Use Somebody.Refer to the former-Nevermind the goofy title,it actually proves why Only by the Night is considered the Breakout for KOL,though requires you to listen to it on repeat to finally want to mimic the simmering guitar intro.Use Somebody,on the other hand, would not require to grow on you the second time you listen to it - You try culturing the angsty accent the very first time, and not to forget the impressive strings playing at 3:00.Only by the Night is judged as KOLs commercial debut which explains why Indie Rock would not mind housing the occasional power ballad.Im referring to Notion which proves a good filler when youre saturated with the big Alternative others. All in all, Only by the Night has probably brought the Brothers out of the garage, and into the arena, where

people want to,and like to see them as they are, version 60s(Yes,count in the hairy image).Im not overlooking the grahpically ingenious lyrics by the way, neither the obvious leeriness.Only by the Night duly deserves being Grammy nominated and surfing high on the charts, and all rest accolade. An album which no doubtedly makes their fan base a whole large league.Add me!

    The E.N.DBlack Eyed Peas.

    Music Reviews by Amrita Lal

  • Party on!Yes.Thats all that youre gonna be concerned with when Album no.5s on.Because? The Energy Never Dies-especially not when its the Black Eyed Peas.Comeback number 3 of the year, after Green Day and Eminem, and Bep bring us their rejuvenated selves with their reinvented music. From being crowned the ultimate hip hop moguls with 05s Monkey Business, we now see them bring about their electro-pop side forward with the E.N.D(Quite an acronym, isnt it?).The album stands as the ultimate souvenir to the serious clubbing the Bep are known for. Auto tunes, the eerie cameos in between, screechy shrills, synth chords - every single thing about the album gets your senses gyrating.Will.i.am takes the front, kick starting the Record with his booming, computerized voice, with Boom Boom Pow which even though is a far cry from their 05s popular lady lumps, my humps scene;the boundless energy show is insanely awesome. And being considered as their most successful single yet? Yes, deserved. Under an aggressive, merciless, dance-till-you-drop concept. Agreed the first single is probably the most kickass, the

others hover just as near.Rock that Body - I neednt say more - With the huge David Guetta in production for this one, nothing but audio genius expected. The stringy I Gotta Feelingis almost unlike Bep,but a pleasant departure anyway.Other major electro-pop party numbers-Party All the Time andImma beget you up and grinding in no time at all.But that is ONLY what the complete album is about. With the exception of tracks like One Tribe which includes World Peace as a plea, all 15 tracks would serve your purpose if all that youre interested in is,insensate clubbing. An opinion-Monkey Business was more of a Bep thing than the E.N.D. is.

    RelapseEminem.

Hate, honesty, ingenuity, and the Eminem.Look no further-Relapse is the thing. From the King of Rap,nothing less expected than the brutal truth, and with Album no.6 everything just gets better. The album is probably the best of his works, ever.By Relapse,Eminem refers to the return of his legendary alter-ego,Slim Shady and the end of his drug rehabilitation and each

single track is fraught with pure talent, which in Eminems way,is pure hatred and violence.Opening with a skit,Dr.West,Eminem starts his tale,in verse, detailing the maniac other him,Slim Shady and his return.Eminem aka Slim Shady within the cusps of Satans horns and you get.. Relapse.3 a.m probably says that quite clearly where he portrays himself as a homicide killer, and includes among his victims-His very own cousin-setting the uber dark tone of the entire album.Another motive of Eminem of getting the listeners prone to puke is held upright with Insane, whose very

    http://gyrating.Will.i.am

  • first line gets you flinching heavily, but nonetheless lets you hanging on to it for more. Then, come the obvious other celebs, and Eminem shows no mercy in slaggering them off in pretty many other tracks. And no Eminem record with a spoof amiss is complete, right? So,around comes We made you,the ultimate mockery, with Mathers playing a pop star serial killer. All through, what is clearly evident is Eminems brilliant wordplay and the crystal clear anger. His drug overdose, his love for music, his own mother being a cause for his drug addiction, the domestic violence, his hardships- all of it play a vital role on the Album. Pure feeling in violences disguise, forms the core of Relapse, best seen in Beautiful,a ballad, infringing upon Eminems very own career. The entire album is anything but pure brilliance, and explains why Eminem has always ruled the charts, and certain to continue, with this masterpiece.
