A DIRECTOR’S WELCOME

Welcome to our first Annual Report!

Every year at BIS is special, and 2015-16 was no exception. However, 2015-16 also marked the 25th anniversary year of Bavarian International School. Yes, BIS first opened its doors 25 years ago, in 1991 to six students and has grown to just under 1100 students on two campuses. On the following pages, you will read a story of academic successes and of achievements in other learning areas, upon which we place high value, inclu-ding both the Arts and Athletics, helping to showcase students’ individual talents and love of learning. The multiple events we host at BIS are also highlighted along with pictures of our Alumni, with whom we are always happy to catch up. What strikes me most about BIS, however, is what a safe environment we provide for our students. Yes, we have security cameras and fenced campuses, we wear badges, we lock our doors, and we have enlisted the services of security guards. We practice fire drills and safe haven drills. Our Crisis Response Plan is up-to-date. What I am referring to, which is just as, if not more important, is the safe learning environment we provide for our students. In order to learn, we all must feel safe to make mistakes. One doesn’t learn anything by always making the right choices – mistakes are an important step in learning. Indeed, James Joyce described mistakes as „the portals to discovery”. Isn’t that what we want for our students - the joy of discovery?

In 2015-16 we have witnessed mistakes made by all constituencies of the community: students, teachers, administrative staff, leadership, parents and the Board. I am proud of the way our community can admit it’s mistakes, suggest solutions, and move forward. Failure becomes the basis for profound learning. When this happens at BIS, what we have is a true learning community.

We hope you enjoy reading this latest chapter in the story of our school and join me in celebrating the 2015-16 academic year. Let us continue to appreciate our committed faculty & staff, Board, PTO, and parents for their contributions without whose support BIS would not be possible. Thank you!

Kind regards,

Dr. Chrissie SorensonDirector, Bavarian International School e.V.

THE BOARD‘S WELCOME

25 years! The number alone is quite the accomplishment and it should be readily celebrated. The true celebration however, should be in what we have achieved as a school during this time. Not only have our enrolment numbers increased immen-sely, but BIS has made a lasting impact on countless lives of students, the community, and anyone that has been fortunate enough to be a part of our organisation.

In depth planning was required in order to manage our ex-pansion and our goal of becoming the International school of choice in Munich, without losing our unique and inspiring spirit. Despite changes in Director and Boards, many projects were successfully managed by everyone’s passion for delivering the best result for our school and its stu-dents. Most impressive of all was the successful opening of the Primary City Campus to allow the Haim-hausen campus to expand its Secondary School, and keep BIS at the forefront for international education.

Our most important focus remains to support our students to fulfil their potential and achieve their abso-lute best to become successful, inspiring, responsible and actively engaged global citizens.

On behalf of the entire Board, I would like to thank all of the faculty and staff, students, alumni, and pa-rents who have made this last year, as well as the last 25 years, such a great success. We simply would not be where we are today without the hard work and dedication of these individuals.

Uwe Freiherr von Saalfeld Board Chair, Bavarian International School e.V.

THANK YOU TO RETIRED FACULTY MEMBERS

Hans Hermann Hallensleben joined BIS in 1991, from the United World College of S.E. Asia. He joined a very young school with the primary school in Goldach and the secondary school in Munich, Schleißheimer Straße. Flexibility and the readiness to take on a multitude of tasks were amongst the key qualities expected from new colleagues. Commuting between two campuses, Hermann taught German in the primary, French and German in the secondary school and soon became head of Ger-man and chairman of the Betriebsrat.

Married to a Singaporean, Sandra, and being a keen traveller, Hermann left BIS twice in order to teach in Asia, but luckily he also returned twice. In 1999, the Hallensleben family moved to Penang where Hermann taught at the International School of Penang. In 2002 he returned to BIS, continued teaching French and German and produced the BIS yearbook with his wife, Sandra. In 2006 Asia was calling again and Hermann and Sandra decided it was time to introduce their daughter, Laura, to the Chine-se-speaking world. For four years, Hermann taught history, French and English at the German- French School in Shanghai. He also used his time for extensive travels in the area and acquired an awkward but sturdy bicycle; a handicap in itself and much admired by grade 9 students on the trip to Vienna.

He also decided that his running needed to be taken up a notch and that China was the best place to start running marathons! When the family came back to BIS, the serious business of Laura’s IB Diplo-ma Programme was awaiting them. However, as it turned out she had inherited her father’s inner ba-lance, which is why she sailed through the IB with relative ease. Time has flown and as Laura is about to graduate from the University of East Anglia, Hermann, difficult to believe, will be retiring from BIS.

We are losing a great teacher, friend and colleague. He has served and enriched BIS in many roles, but most of all with his balanced and reassuring presence. Generations of students will remember him with fondness. Sandra will remain at BIS for some time - and wherever she is, Hermann can’t be more than a 1000 miles away!

THANK YOU TO RETIRED FACULTY MEMBERSDorothy Bishop

Dorothy Bishop worked as Grade 3 teacher from 2003 till 2016. She continued working for BIS with enthusiasm and commitment well beyond the statutory of 65. This was, as she shared regu-larly, because she quite simply, loved to teach and most especially loved teaching at BIS. She was a respected colleague who dedicated herself to the profession and is quoted each year in the new teacher’s orientation week as saying, “You’re never too old to learn, even for an old dinosaur like me!”

The word joy can be used to describe Dorothy, we can all remember vividly the excitement with which Dorothy shared her students` learning. Her room was always alive and cheerful... reflection of her character! Each student in her room was ´special´ to her. Her classroom was an environ-ment in which students’ learning thrived and where they felt safe to take risks.

Bryan Nixon, the previous Director at BIS who worked with Dorothy as both the PYP Coordina-tor/ Assistant Principal, Principal and then Director, was fortunate to have had two of his three children experience a year with Dorothy in class 3B and said: “Dorothy had a gift and found great joy in sharing that gift with hundreds of students and colleagues. It was a privilege to be her colleague and to spend time with someone who always had a positive outlook, who showed great compassi-on for others and who always put children first.”

Dorothy will still visit BIS from time to time as a substitute teacher and is always warmly welcomed by staff members and ex students alike. She will soon take on the new challenge as she becomes a grandmother for the first time.

BUSINESS DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Legal stipulations regarding School Fees and changing regulations in Bavaria required new approach towards International Schools

The AISB had a meeting with State Secretary of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology and several meetings with State Secretary of the Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and the Arts to strengthen political awareness for the economical importance of International Schools in Bavaria and to gain an individual legal school status. Contacts to and meetings with political stakeholders in the last months were partly successful to take first steps towards ensuring proper financial support by the state of Bavaria for the programme(s) of-fered and to discuss the pedagogical freedom to deliver internationally recognised quality education. The AISB will keep close contact to political partners, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Ministry of Education to ensure progress of processes that have already started.

Strong support is also given by influential lobbying associations such as the Vereinigung der Bayeri-schen Wirtschaft (vbw) and Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau (VDMA). The Ministry of Economic Affairs declared its cooperation and is working on a first draft of a solution.

There are regular meetings with all schools involved – following up on current developments and further improvement of strategic partnerships.

Support of all BIS community members is helpful and required! If you want to support the AISB please contact the Business Director for further information and discussion.

BIS ANNUAL FUNDOur children deserve the very best.

Inspiring and challenging young minds.

Bavarian International School e. V. aims to raise children to become life-long learners by taking risks, reflecting on their experiences and preparing for their futures. BIS would also like to prepare the school for the future and to ensure that BIS can offer its students everything the staff and the children are inspired to achieve, create, and discover.

The BIS tuition fees are calculated in order to cover all necessary on-going costs, such as the staff sa-laries and keeping the students‘ environment in excellent condition. Due to subsidies received from the Bavarian government and since BIS is a non-profit organization, the range of possible investment or saving forms is very limited. BIS wants to continue to stay affordable for the parents and therefore, constantly raising fees to be able to make additional investments in our school is not an option.

BIS strives to provide our students with the very best education possibilities, as well as a caring environment, in order to fulfill their individual potential. Your donation to the newly founded BIS Annual fund affects the children directly. By helping BIS to enhance its curriculum and co-curri- culum, you are enabling the future leaders to discover and explore even more of what the world has to offer.

Help BIS prepare our students for the world of tomorrow and leave a lasting legacy behind. Whether it is for the benefit of your own child, or as a thank you for BIS`s commitment to international- mindedness and each students` happiness and bright future.

BIS TRAVELS TO …

We had a great time and found terrific inspi-ration from first hand experiences with profes-sional arts. Students, many for the first time, absorbed Bach, Mozart and Handel played by a chamber orchestra at St. Martin in the Field as well as an organ concert at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The Alternative Walking Tour took us around the drastically changing East End and we dis-cussed gentrification and it’s impact on artist communities. At the V&A Museum we were challenged to redefine Luxury and explored the

visiting exhibition of modern stage and costu-me design. We also attended a viewing of War Horse, where we investigated collaboration, as a group of actors was required to puppeteer the main character in the play. The trip was a great success and we even found time to dine at the Sherlock Holmes restaurant and watch a small bit of the Tour of Britain bicycle race between visiting the British Museum and National Gal-lery.

BIS Students in Seville

After 4 days of immersion in language, the Grade 9 Spanish students made impressive progress with their Spanish! They communicate with much more confidence and take every opportunity to use their skills. The pace was hectic, but the group enjoyed the 5 hours of language classes every day and the cul-tural excursions. We visited the Plaza de la Republica, the Bull-fighting Ring, Barrio Santa Cruz, Doñana – the national Park, Matalascañas beach, had a Sevillanas dance class and, of course, enjoyed a spectacular Flamenco show.

Lego Land – The Grade 4 Students had a day of learning about forces, balanced with some well-deserved fun!

Field trips are a very important part of our pro-gramme and these powerful learning experien-ces can have a transformative effect on student inquiry. All the trips that took place this year had a clear purpose and there were very clear links between the concepts that are currently being explored within the Units of Inquiry. The Primary School teachers excitedly shared that one of the things they had been doing in the classroom was learning about forces in a book that included examples in an area that was of great interest to the students: roller coasters and fun fairs! The children’s knowledge about forces all around them is quite outstanding and

being able to cement it with this practical day of forces in action has been an excellent expe-rience. They learnt about potential and kinetic ener-gy and where these are at their maximum on a rollercoaster, gravity, friction and centrifugal forces, air resistance and more! (and of course, they had a fun day too!)

Grade 3 Trip to Benediktbeuren

The Primary School Principal was able to spend some quality time with the students in Grade 3 during their residential field trip to Benediktbeu-ern. They had a fabulous three days, despite the weather being horrible due to the heavy rain on the Thursday. The students were a credit to both their parents and the school. Thank you to all the teachers who chaperoned, and to the office la dies wh o we re invaluable to the group for liaising with the guides and hostel ahead of the trip. All of the residential trips in the Primary School are designed primarily as educational experi-ences that address a number of our curriculum outcomes relating to both the Unit of Inquiry and

our PSHE curriculum. They really are wonder-ful experiences for the children and regardless of whether they have slept away from home before, or whether they enjoy the outdoors; the pride the students feel upon returning after the trip having been away from Mum and Dad, make the trips very worthwhile and rewarding for the teachers.

The trip was a wonderful opportunity for the students to explore the culture of Salzburg and also included a great afternoon in the “Haus der Natur” museum. If your child is not yet in Grade 5, this is definitely something they should look forward to.

STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS 2016

Huge congratulations to our Girls and Boys Var-sity basketball teams! During the course of a busy weekend, both of our teams claimed victory at the

highly competitive GISST tournaments. This is a fantastic achievement and credit goes to all play-ers, coaches and supporters. GO LIONS!

BIS Claim both Varsity Girls and Boys GISST Championship Titles!

Pia Auer and Issabelle Hampel, two of our dedica-ted Grade 12 students, have been working closely with the charity Shelterbox for the past 5 years. Their interest was sparked as a result of the work undertaken through Service and Action and CAS. During the summer, this culminated in the girls completing an internship with the organisation in the UK. Shelterbox were extremely impressed with the girls‘ dedication, determination and wil-lingness to give of their time to help others. Thus, they asked the girls to inspire others through a po-dcast that can now be found on the official Shel-terbox website. Our thanks to Issy and Pia for their exemplary and inspiring work. Thanks also to Ms. Letchert who has worked tirelessly to establish such a productive relationship with the Shelterbox organisation.

On a Tuesday afternoon, Grade 1 was delighted to share their stories with their parents. This marked the end of the “Once upon an Imagination Unit” which comes under the transdisciplinary theme of “How we Express Ourselves”. The children had worked hard to produce their own storybooks, initially in draft form and then as a final, well-illustrated product. The students have also uploaded their stories into the app “Book Creator“ and made a recording of themsel-ves reading their finished literary First Editions. The Grade 1 teachers reported, „It was so lovely to see the children sharing their delightful books with such pride“

Well done to Grade 1 and thank you to all the pa-rents who were able to make it.

Grade 5 Bake sale

Mallory, Megan, Olivia and Ruby in Grade Five held a Bake Sale to raise money for an animal shelter in Dachau. The girls had attended a number of meetings with the Primary School Principal over the last few weeks, convincing her that they had planned this properly, would market the sale themselves, that they had organised enough

support so that this would work. The maturity of the students was overwhelming, who even arranged a sign up for volunteers and ensured there was parent permission for all involved. Not only was the bake sale a huge success, but the girls raised an amazing 494,61 Euros which they topped up to make 500 Euros. Congratula-tions to all involved!

ACTIVITIES 2016

BIS art department’s dream to create a sculp-ture garden and build on the previous years successful installation by Gavin Worth is be-coming a reality. This year in October, up to 80 MYP art students from Grade 9 and Grade 10 were able to be involved in the creation and actual building of individual structures which now adorn the school campus. Students had a unique opportunity to not only work with pro-fessional sculptors, but also to create in unusual ways and develop skills with different materials. Their classroom research into sculpture and es-tablished artists informed their perception and fueled imagination and creativity for outside the class, proposing their own forms and state-ments in a three dimensional way.Antoine was unable to carve out of stone in Germany, so chose instead to build a huge form from the centre and base upwards, with gently curved 8mm metal rods, creating a linear form inspired by the cross hatching from his drawi-ngs.Students were involved with the bending and cutting of metal rods, which Antoine then wel-ded in place, integrating them directly into the building process.

Volker came for a workshop in class with Grade 9 students, encouraging them to create sculptu-res to sit on as a sculpture garden. He facilitated this through the creation of maquettes (small scale prototypes). Grade 10 were to consider a kinetic element in their sculptures. These ma-quettes were then developed and transformed into collaborative pieces using thick square and thin round rods. Students had the opportunity to realize some of their proposals, manipulating and finishing the materials, while the actual welding was facilitated by the artists. The grade 9 students seating was created around the concept “Dialogue” and Volker produced his own piece in the same genre as their chair project which now greets all students, staff and parents at the school entrance. Education and school activity is of course based on dialogue and communication, and his and the student chairs pay tribute to this. Students had a unique opportunity to not only work with professional sculptors but also to create in unusual ways and develop skills with different materials. Their successes are in place now for all to see.

The production has become a tradition for the Primary School being led by Mrs Karen Elmitt, Ms Judy Page and Ms Kim House. This team of educators have generated such support and good-will that parents who no longer have students in the Primary School still volunteer to help with costumes, prop making, and scenery. This is such a wonderful community event, and one which delights year after year. The two evenings were

absolutely fantastic! Thank you to all who helped in all ways from dressing and make up on the night to painting the backdrop to being there for all the rehearsals etc. etc. Thanks also to PTO for running the bar and the student council and parents who baked to raise money for our partner school in Nepal and the refugees locally.

A number of Primary students joined the Se-condary role models to participate in a ski meet. The school received a number of very excited updates from Ms Joanna (The Primary students’ chaperone) who was extremely proud of our competitors.

They brought home at least two gold medals and a silver, with a number of others finishing in the top 5 or 10. For such young students with little experience, this is amazing. Congratulations to all the skiers who participated and represented the school. Thanks also to Mr Nicol for coordina-ting the ski programme and this event.

PARENT TEACHER ORGANISATION (PTO)

The mission of the PTO is to enrich the overall educational and cultural experiences for students and families at BIS and encourage mutual support between faculty, parents/guardians, and stu-dents across both campuses.

The PTO objectives are community, fundraising, and communication.

The PTO builds community through Grade/Language/Area Representatives, Welcome Picnics, Staff Appreciation Luncheon, and other seasonal events.

The PTO fundraising includes Christkindlmarkt, International Festival, Quiz Night, and other events. All proceeds return to the school though the Annual Grants Program.

The PTO communicates with parents via e-Newsletter, BIS school PTO page, BIS Facebook groups (Moms and Dads, Sales and Wanted, and Lost and Found) and PTO Meetings.

2015 – 2016 BIS PTO Highlight Achievements

Babysitter List – For the first time the PTO promoted a database of students interested in babysitting, offering our students in Gr. 10, 11, and 12 an opportunity to earn extra money. This resource, much appreciated by all our parents, faculty, and staff, is valuable especially to new families who know no-body on their arrival.

Booster Club – The PTO Booster club supports our athletes and athletic teams throughout the school year, by running the concession stand during home matches and hosted tournaments. In 2015-2016 this group of volunteer parents helped BIS to host 2 ESC (European Sport Conference) and 1 GISST (German International Schools Tournament) weekend tournaments.

Social events – The PTO helps BIS in gathering volunteer parents in support to the faculty during school events such as Photo Days and Sport Days.

Social Media – The PTO EC Communication member and IT Coordinator started working on the communication system (PTO newsletter, PTO web page on school intranet and FB BIS Moms&Dads) to include information about the City Campus and improve consistency and clarity of provided in-formation

BIS ALUMNI

After graduating from BIS in 2012, I joined the University of Warwick to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering (BEng). Ha-ving spent 13 years at BIS, all the way from Reception to Grade 12, it was perhaps unsurprising that Warwick was my first choice. The vast campus is located in the outskirts of Coventry to form an educatio-nal hub that closely resembled the feeling of an intimate community which I cherished at BIS in Haimhausen.

My first two years at Warwick passed by in such an excited frenzy that I suddenly found myself in my third year at University unsure of what the future might hold. Having achieved the required marks to transfer from the BEng to MEng (an integrated Master of Engineering degree) and completing two industrial summer internships at Texas Instruments, I was motivated and eager to tackle any obstacle …and it did not take long for the first one to appear. During the selection process for my third-ye-ar Bachelor project, I was extremely disappointed to have received my second choice after weeks of in-depth preparation for my first choice. However, this single incident sparked the beginning of an unexpected journey.

The project I had been assigned was in a developing research area: breath analysis. Since the early 1980’s, Warwick has been developing electronic noses (E-Noses), which utilise breath analysis to “sniff out” diseases. Breath analysis can therefore be described as a novel method of obtaining data on the clinical state of an individual through specific sampling and subsequent analysis of exhaled breath. For my third-year project, I developed a sampling device that could separate certain portions of bre-ath samples to increase concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). I enjoyed the project so much that I participated in the Undergraduate Research Support Scheme (URSS) in the summer of 2015. This scheme is offered at many UK universities to provide a unique opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience of academic research. I highly recommend it for anyone considering a career in academia or R&D.

The outcomes of this project were so successful that I was invited to present my research at the Houses of Parliament in London at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research in February 2016. I even received second prize, for a highly-commended poster! This was undoubtedly the highlight of my undergraduate experience. My academic supervisor was seeking new PhD students to continue working in the field of breath analysis, so I applied to the PhD programme at Warwick and received an offer that included a full-studentship, provided by the School of Engineering.

Following my graduation as a Master of Electronic Engineering in July 2016, I spent the summer wor-king as a temporary research assistant to aid in various research projects conducted at the Biomedical Sensors Laboratory (BSL). Having started my PhD in October 2016, I am already looking forward to three more years of exciting and challenging work in this developing research area. On top of the PhD, I am currently working at the University of Warwick Library as a steward, assisting course leaders at the School of Engineering with teaching materials, doing note-taking for Disability Services and per-forming the task of Resident Tutor at one of the on-campus accommodations for first-year students. If IB has taught me anything, it is how to manage my time as effectively as possible, no matter how unmanageable the situation might seem. Just keep swimming.

I hope this short story of my time since graduating from BIS provides some inspiration to the new generation of students that will be starting University or entering an exciting new phase of their life.
