Two Hundred And Eighty Second Edition
I was thrilled to receive this interesting photograph of the old almshouses. I had not seen one showing the
barn-like building on the York Road before.
I think it must have been taken in about 1930, as the almshouses look to be in good condition (from the
outside) but in 1936 they were condemned. Steps were taken to build four new ones in Callas. These
were completed in 1939 and four residents were relocated there. The Second World War intervened and
the old almshouses were requisitioned to house families who had been bombed out in Hull. Amongst
these were Cecil Barlow's parents - his mother was a Bishop Burton girl. Cecil was already living in the
village, as his parents had sent him to live with his Grandma for his safety when the war started, so the
family was reunited. He was five years old and attended the village school and lived in one of the
almshouses, and has kindly given me lots more information.
Mr and Mrs Hubbert lived in the house to the north of the almshouses and the building on the York Road
was theirs. Mr Hubbert owned a car, which was quite rare in those days. Mrs Hubbert ran a thriving café,
serving-teas in the house and garden. Her customers were mainly cyclists and walkers.
Bishop Burton was a lovely place to visit then, as indeed it is now.
We are fortunate to live here.

Can we please have your articles for the September Edition before the 23rd

THANK YOUS
This edition of the News has received quite a few thank you articles. They have all wanted to impart ‘big
thank you’s’. Now ‘many thanks’ is fine and ‘grateful thanks’ is great but I am not sure what a ‘big thank
you’ looks like!! Do I type it in big bold print? I am sure someone will put me right?! Lovely to know
that hard work is being done in Bishop Burton. Well done to you all!

DEFIBRILLATOR
Many weeks ago John Dunning emailed me to ask if the village knew about the Defibrillator that was in
the village. Well if you do not know then here goes.
The Defibrillator is outside the Altisidora attached to the wall at the bottom of the steps outside the door
that leads to the car park. There is a 999 telephone number on the box which in an emergency you call
and you will be given full instructions as to what to do. The staff at the Altisidora are not qualified to use
the machine.

PAINT THE VILLAGE HALL
SATURDAY 13TH AUGUST 2PM
After the success of the “spring clean” it is hoped that some of you may fancy
volunteering for an hour or two to help paint the bottom of the main hall in the
Village Hall on Saturday 13th
August starting at 2pm. Hopefully Jan will bring some
cake? Also for those hardworking volunteers there will be a BBQ afterwards, with a
couple of free beers. Salads etc. will be provided but please bring your own meat
and any additional booze!

THE PLAYGROUND
A grateful note of thanks to those who came along to the playground on Sunday 15th
May, armed with
spades, clippers and gardening paraphernalia, to lend a helping hand in giving it a well needed make over.
During the winter months the grass and weeds had begun to take over leaving our lovely playground
looking somewhat dejected and unloved. However, team work and community spirit prevailed, fuelled
by a welcome cuppa and biscuit, (generously provided by Nicola). The small army of volunteers clipped
and strimmed their way through the mass of overgrown grass and thistles galore to reveal a playground
area that looked as good as new ahead of the summer holidays.
Many thanks to Paul and Jason for tackling the unruly grass and to Fleur, Nicola and Charlotte for
digging out the weeds and revealing paths once more. We couldn’t have done it without the children too,
they mixed gardening with fun and games and a merry time was had by everyone.Thank you all.

BISHOP BURTON GOLFING SOCIETY
Through injury, sickness, holidays etc. our numbers were depleted: 8 men and 4 ladies played the course.
The Ladies winner, Alison Johnson, a new member of the Society, scored 36 points. Her handicap will

Bradley with 31 points.
Alison Johnson had a 2 on the sixth hole as did Graeme Pittaway who was also ‘nearest the pin’. Bob
Bratton had a 2 on the third hole.
As is customary, we all enjoyed a meal and drinks at the Altisidora.
The next meeting, Autumn, will be held at Filey Golf Club on Thursday 13th
October 2016.

VILLAGE HALL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2016
The Village Hall AGM was held on the 28th
April 2016. Several villagers turned out for the event which
was really pleasing to see. The outgoing committee were re-elected with the exception of Richard
Tomlinson. John Sprakes and Kenneth Macdonald agreed to join the committee.
Richard Tomlinson stood down as he anticipates leaving Bishop Burton – we all thank him for all the
hard work he has done and wish him and his family best wishes for the future.
Financially the village hall has made a surplus during the past year and as a result a programme has been
put in place for refurbishment of the welfare side of the hall.
Sue Leeding expressed her support for all the committees in the village by saying it was often hard and an
unrewarding task to get new and younger villagers involved.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our main sponsors – The Parish Council for their
continued and generous support and also welcome Jonathon Dalton onto the committee in support of the
sponsors.
[4]
The following are members of the committee and would like to hear of any comments good or bad, any
ways of increasing funds, events and ideas they would like to happen – Jan Biden, Hillary Swann, John
Sprakes, Kenneth McDonald, Chris Clarke, David Oxtoby, Muriel Wray, Margaret Hebb, Sandy Jones
and Jonathon Dalton (trustee member).

BISHOP BURTON COUNTRY FRIENDS
May On a lovely evening in May, a dozen or so members met at the village hall where the Community
Bus was waiting to take us to Foston, near Driffield where the ‘Side-Oven Bakery is situated. Carr House
Farm is owned by the Sellers Family, and is an organic farm growing cereals which are then turned into
granola and muesli or milled using a traditional stone ground mill. After a talk by Mr Sellers, we then
went to hear Mrs Sellers give the history of the Side Oven Bakery and watched her kneading and
preparing various bakery products. These were then sampled and accompanied by the farm’s own apple
juice and elderflower cordial. After a visit to the farm shop it was time for home, with the glorious sunset
rounding off a wonderful evening.
June Celebration of the Queen’s 90th
Birthday. The village hall was decked out with flowers, bunting
and flags and a large cut out figure of the Queen. The hall was full of members and their guests, all
wearing a selection of wonderful hats. There was a super homemade Afternoon Tea, all prepared by the
hard-working committee and members. Well done to everyone!
July The Annual Outing to Bridlington Old town and Sewerby Hall. 10am from the Mere. There are
plenty of seats left on the bus. Cost is £8 to members, £16 for non-members plus the cost of the fish and
chips. Please contact Sue Brooks on 551624 if you would like to join us.
August No meeting
September 12th
– 7.30pm Village Hall. AGM and Pot Luck Supper. Please bring money for your
annual membership. Possible visit by the Market Weighton Hand-Bell Ringers.
New members are always welcome!

VILLAGE HALL SPRING CLEAN 22ND
MAY
Thank you to all those who kindly came along to help “Spring Clean” the Village Hall; it looks positively
gleaming – the kitchen is sparkling and, in the main hall, the lights, floor and windows all had a good
deep clean – you now need your sunglasses to enter. I’ve had many positive comments from users. The
outside was also tidied up with some great weeding and strimming taking place. It is great what can be
achieved in a few hours – many hands really do make light work! Thanks Jan for the scrummy cake.
Thank you again to those who came and helped.
Paul Chisholm – Chair, Village Hall Committee.
FRIENDS OF ALL SAINTS CHURCH
Update of Activities
Well, what a busy few weeks at FOASBB! The Welcome and Launch event was very
well attended, plans for the Church were shared and questions were asked on how the
Friends were intending to achieve the outcome. The Bishop Burton choir treated
everybody to a fabulous rendition of their recent works - which sounded great in the
Church. After a few questions and answers, the evening was finished off with drinks
and nibbles - thanks to those who provided those! Several generous donations were received and further
membership forms were received too. Thanks to all who contributed in one way or another and thank you
to those who gave their time to listen and support the cause.
[5]
The following week, we moved swiftly on to the final plans for the Bishop Burton Village Barn
Dance...much hard work went on behind the scenes, clearing the barn, organising the tables and chairs
and making last minute ticket sales! Once the day arrived many hands made light work and the barn was
transformed into a rustic red, white and blue venue, just waiting for the crowds to arrive...and they
did! Sue & Trevor Thomas welcomed everybody to their home and with no further ado, the band struck
up and immediately filled the dance floor. Much laughter and tired legs later, the fish and chip supper
pulled up and provided a welcome break. Drinks were flowing and folk were having a good time! The
weather had taken a turn for the worst at this point, however it did not dampen the spirits of the evening
and once again, the band cajoled those resting their legs onto the dance floor, into a smart formation, to
jig around to 'Strip the Willow' and other aptly named dances!
The youngsters enjoyed playing games together and helping out with choc ice sales, which left some very
tired eyes as the evening moved on...all in all, a wonderful evening, celebrating the 90th Birthday of
Queen Elizabeth II with lots of Bishop Burton community spirit!
Grateful thanks to all those who helped in one way or another, donated the raffle prizes, helped to swell
the ticket sales and of course to those who came along and enjoyed the evening. It was a success because
of all of you! A nod towards the amount of money raised so far will be given in the next
newsletter. Keep your eyes open for the next FOASBB village event.

NEWS FROM ALL SAINTS
It has been a busy time for those involved with our church! The Barn Dance on 11th June organised by
the Friends of All Saints was a great success and lots of fun for all ages. The Flower Festival two weeks
later saw the church transformed by all the wonderful arrangements, and a gorgeous perfume of lilies
too! The Preview Evening including a short number of songs from the Bishop Burton Village choir with
wine and canapés was a most enjoyable social event.
The church was open with refreshments and a delicious selection of cakes and biscuits over the weekend
for people to come to admire all the beautiful flower arrangements. Congratulations to Ann Cherry and
her team of helpers who masterminded and organised the Festival.
The next event will be the Annual Parish Lunch at Raikes Farm on Sunday 10th July. Enjoy the summer!

HAVE YOU ANY PHOTOS OF THE VILLAGE OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS?
The Village Hall, with the kind help of our resident artist John Sprakes, is looking to put together a
montage of photographs of the village and its events over the past 10 years. If you have any that you
think may be suitable could you please drop them in to Jan at Lavender Cottage, Bryan Mere, with a short
description of what and when and names of any of those on the photograph.

GLASS BOTTLE RECYCLING
A thank you to everyone who is continuing to recycle their glass bottles in the bottle bank in the
Altisidora car park. All funds raised go to the Village Hall and last year you helped raise nearly £100.
This money goes towards maintaining the Village Hall and keeping the charges for villagers low.
Please note: the bottle bank in the Altisidora Car Park takes ALL COLOURS OF
GLASS, irrespective of what the bin says on the outside of it.
So if you are able, please put your glass bottles in the bottle bank rather than in
your blue bin. If you find the bottle bank is getting full please ring me and I will
arrange for it to be emptied. Many thanks.
For and on behalf of the Village Hall Committee.
Margaret Hebb – 550315.

jazz stars" JAZZWISE; “One of those rare singers that tells a genuine story with her music, through her
passionate performance and naturally warm voice, it's a beguiling combination that's hard to resist. One of
the UK's finest singers in any genre" TIME OUT – she is sure to be a sell out. Find out more on
www.julietkelly.com.

VILLAGE HALL TABLE
A thank you is required to everyone who has either donated items for the table in the Village Hall or has
made a donation when taking items from the Village Hall table. Over the last year this has raised a
massive £168 for Village Hall funds. Like the glass recycling money, this goes towards maintaining the
Village Hall and keeping the charges for villagers low. Thank you.
[7]
The table is now in need of additional items, so if anyone is thinking of having a bit of a summer sort out
and has any items they think may be suitable please either leave them in the Hall under the table or take
them to Jan’s – Lavender Cottage, Bryan Mere, or Margaret’s – Dunvegan, Puddingate. Many thanks for
all your donations.
If you are ever in the Village Hall do have a browse – you never know what you may find. All donations
in the tin please. Many thanks to you all for helping to recycle and raise funds.

DID YOU EVER WONDER WHY THERE ARE NO DEAD PENGUINS ON
THE ICE IN ANTARCTICA - WHERE DO THEY GO?
Wonder no more! ! !
It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird
which lives an extremely ordered and complex life The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life,
as well as maintaining a form of compassionate contact with its
offspring throughout its life.
If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have
been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough
for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried.
The male penguins then gather in a circle around the
fresh grave and sing:
"Freeze a jolly good fellow”
