lean Those Pots!Every year about this time wee filling our pots with flowers, aybe herbs and patio veggies.hen I drag mine out of the gar-n shed they are often crustedth some chemical or saltsidue, some crusts can harborant disease. Hitting them withe hose doesnt do the job. So howyou get rid of that crusty stuff?

ere is what the experts say. Toean the crust from empty con-iners, soak them for at least 30inutes in a solution of nine partskewarm water to one part liquidlorine bleach. Scrub them with aff wire brush, then rinse well tomove all visible traces of theinerals. The bleach cleans anderilizes the pots. If they dont

come clean after one or two at-tempts, discard them.

The crusty build up can comefrom naturally occurring mineralsin the water and from water- solu-ble fertilizers. These build-upscan accumulate in the soil causingroot burn that leaves roots unableto take up water. This is the mainreason for annually doing a thor-ough cleaning of those containers. Some containers are more suscep-tible to these crusty build-upsthan others as you will notice asyou examine your containers eachspring.

Try to prevent these build-upsby avoiding excessive fertilizer. Donot use water that has gonethrough a water softener or wellwater with a high salt content. It

The Bison Courier Thursday, June 6, 201

is also recommended not to waterfrom the bottom as this encour-ages uptake and deposit of themineral salts on the surface andrim of the container. If you dowater from the bottom, once amonth water heavily form the topuntil the water runs freely out thebottom to help leach out some ofthe accumulated mineral salts.

For healthier, happier plants besure to scrub out those pots priorto planting!

    Pastor Brad Burkhalter

Proverbs 9:10 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning ofwisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."Wisdom is something that seems to be pursued by manyand found by few. But what is it? How do you define it?Well the best definition of wisdom that I have heard is,

"Seeing and responding to life situations from God's frameof reference." If we could see life from God's point of view

and act in accordance with that perspective we wouldindeed be wise. The problem is that most of the time wedon't even consider God's frame of reference. Instead we

make decisions based upon what we see and think are bestand we often suffer as a result. In fact the opposite of

wisdom is to follow our natural inclinations. May we cryout to God and ask him to show us how He views life and

the circumstances around us. If we see that, we willcertainly respond in a wise way. May God bless you with

His frame of reference. Pastor Brad

By Richard P. Holm M.D.Why does the US have the mostpensive health care system ine world? What is inflammation? Neways to turn off inflammation

ve revolutionized the treatmentarthritis and other illnesses,

hich begs the question.Coming from the Latin words

nto the flame," like what bonfireters observe the moth doing on ammer night, inflammation is atural phenomenon that can bermful and almost evil. But theremuch more to this story.During the summers of my firstur years of medical school, I wasnored to spend time with thectors of the Bartron Clinic inatertown, where they generouslyovided an educational experi-ce for me. I realize now at that

vel of training, how little help Ias to any of them, but how muchlp their wisdom would eventu-

y be to me.One highlight on inflammationd the history of medicine came

om pediatrician Dr. Ebehardteinrichs. While we were examin-g a young child with acutethritis, he pointed out on hernds the four physical findings

mously described by Celsus, aoman who lived at the time ofsus. "These are the cardinal

gns of inflammation: "rubor"edness,) "tumor" (swelling,)alor" (heat,) and "dolor" (pain,)"said.

A red, swollen, hot, and painfulnt is not the only medical condi-n of inflammation I saw thoseatertown summers. There werescesses, appendicitis, tonsillitis, eningitis and sinusitis, all indi-ting benefits of the inflamma-ry response, where invading in-ctions were fought off by thedy's white-cell warriors. Also beneficial, we have recentlyarned that muscle growth comes

a result of a response to local-ed acute inflammation that fol-ws exercise. Other new studiesow that low-intensity training,

ke walking, can reduce destruc-ve chronic inflammation. All-in-, our bodies are protected anden sculpted by the yin and yangbalanced and healthy inflamma-n.But seeing that young girl withthritis, I realized there can be

rm resulting from inflammationn amok. That summer in Water-wn I also saw patients withthma, poison ivy, psoriasis,

upus, and rheumatoid arthritis;nesses the result of too much in-

ammation.Add to this, now we've learnedrtain cancers grow because of in-ammation. And now we haveedicine that can turn off smalld harmful targets of inflamma-n: cooling crippling arthritis, othing devastating rashes, anden shrinking growing cancers.Rubor, tumor, calor, dolor... itn be a bad and a good thing!

to have a premonition that meet-ing the famous columnist is in ourfuture. In preparation for ourphoto opportunity with BaxterBlackwhenever that might bemy husband began growing outhis whiskers this Spring. Thephoto he wants to have takenwould be me flanked by mustache-wearing Baxter Black and my hus-band on each sideIF it happens. As a woman on the receiving lipsof a walrus-style whiskers and no-ticer of whisker issues, Im sharingmy observations for any men con-

sidering participation in the mus-tache trend in hopes of helpingprevent mustache embarrassingmoments.

Do not accept a mug of foamytap beer without a napkin or han-kie.

Do not eat thickly buttered toastor corn on the cob without a nap-kin or hankie.

Do not drink a cup of coffeewithout a napkin or hankie.

In fact, just pack around a han-kie or grab a napkin/paper towel ifunplanned eating or drinking op-portunities arise.

If youre a self-conscious guy, al-ways check the alignment of themustache in the mirror first thingin the morning. This is when mus-

taches are most likely to appearunruly or crooked.

Check the rearview mirror priorto exiting the vehicle to ensure

neatness and cleanliness beforemingling with people.

As a backup if mirrors arentavailable, establish a habit of sub-consciously shaping the mustachewith the index finger and thumb. If you dont have a miniature mus-tache comb, a toothbrush makes afine mustache brush. *TIP* justdont be lazy and use toothbrushesthat someone you live with cur-rently brushes their teeth with.

Periodically groom the stachewith your tiny comb or mustachetoothbrush to avoid embarrassing

mustache disarrangement or hav-ing unsightly unidentifiable ob-jects in it.

Remove pull tabs on cans beforesipping to avoid whisker-pulling/catching.

If youre the father of a babythat recognizes you with a mus-tache, should you decide to shaveit off, expect your infant to bescared of you the first time he orshe sees you whiskerless.

Avoid downpours. Heavy rainswill cause major drippage from amustache.

When eating messy foods swipethe stache frequently betweenbites.

May these help potential trendfollowers establish a good-looking

mustache, but the most importanttip is NEVER EVER tell your wifeyou let the dog kiss or lick yourmustache clean.

In the last seven days most ofthe state saw rain events whichdumped as much as 10 inches onsome crop acres, says Laura Ed-wards, SDSU Extension ClimateField Specialist.

"How much moisture receivedand whether it brought damage or

relief to agriculture producers re-ally depended on which SouthDakota County their land is in,"Edwards said. "Some farmers willneed to replant, others have towait to plant while their field sitsseveral inches under water, and atthe same time many rancherscouldn't be happier because nowforage and range conditions arelooking better than they have in along time."

Most of the heavy precipitationfell on Turner, Lincoln and Min-nehaha Counties; totals exceeded10 inches in the center of thestorm. This includes areas west-southwest of Sioux Falls that re-ceived over six inches in 24 hoursfrom Saturday to Sunday morn-

ing. Astretch from Onida to Milleralso received at least 6-8 inches;with several northwestern SouthDakota counties receiving severalinches from localized, intensethunderstorms. Streamflow on theBig Sioux and Vermillion Riverscame up quickly, but are projectedto fall within a few days, barringadditional heavy precipitation.

"Our primary concern right nowis flooding in fields in the easternpart of the state," Edwards said.

Depending on the type of rain-storm, Edwards says fields couldbe impacted by flash flooding, which can erode soil, wash awaynew seed and leave large cutouts

in fields; or fieldsing water, whicyoung plants.

nest May of Deadwood walkedto the office of the State Depart-ent of History in Pierre. He dis-ssed the need for a state flagth state historian Doane Robin-n.Turning to me, Robinson said, iss Anding will make you a

ag, Ida (Anding) McNeil said in article in the Jan. 20, 1963,

apid City Daily Journal.McNeil, a legislative referencerarian at the time, designed andade a flag that featured a blaz-g sun in the center of a field of

blue, with the words SouthDakota above the sun in the arc ofthe circle and The SunshineState below the sun in the arc ofthe circle. McNeil said in thenewspaper article that Robinson

suggested a blazing sun emblembecause of South Dakotas manydays of sunshine. McNeil showedthe sample flag to Robinson, whoremarked that the Great Seal ofthe State of South Dakota wouldlook nice on the other side. McNeilagreed, and the state seal setagainst a field of dark blue wasplaced on the reverse side.

A bill adopting the state flagwas passed by the Legislature in1909.

If I had known as much aboutflags as I do now, I certainly would

have left the reverse side plain,McNeil said in the Rapid CityDaily Journal article. Atwo-sidedflag is very difficult to make. Inaddition to the added work, it isdifficult to prevent one side from

showing through onto the other.McNeil explained in the news-

paper article that to make thestate flag, she appliqued thegolden sun and embroidered thesuns rays. She then took anotherpiece of silk, painted details of thestate seal on it and appliqued thisto the reverse side of the flag. Inaddition to being difficult to make,a two-sided flag was expensive toproduce. The silk material fromwhich McNeil made the flag cost$12.50 per yard and the materialsfor one flag cost about $75 in 1963.

South Dakotas State FlagMcNeil left her state job when shemarried in 1921. Although shemade the first state flag, she isbetter remembered for being a pi-oneer in radio broadcasting. Shebecame known as Mrs. Pierre

while owner and operator of KGFXradio in Pierre.

Another version of how SouthDakotas flag came into beingstates that May told Robinson thatDeadwood pioneer Seth Bullockwanted a state flag. Robinsonmakes no mention of Bullocks in-volvement in the state flag inDoane Robinsons Encyclopedia ofSouth Dakota. David A. Wolff ofSpearfish, author of Seth Bullock:Black Hills Lawman, said that hecould find no evidence in his re-search on Bullock to support theidea of Bullock being involved inthe first state flag.

During the 1963 legislative ses-sion, Rep. William Sahr of Pierreintroduced a bill to modify thestate flag. The new one-sided flagkept a sun with a serrated edge ona field of sky blue but placed thestate seal inside the sun. Aroundthe sun were the words SouthDakota and The Sunshine

I added up the rain I dumped outour gauge for the month of Mayd it totaled over five inches, 5.21be exact. There were flood warn-

gs out for Wednesday through Sat-day for every creek and river ine northern Hills and some of roadsere washed out. The prairie is so

een youd swear this was Ireland ifu didnt know better and werenna get some hay, even from somethe hayfields that suffered hailmage. I finally got the south 40owed and was strongly consider-g using the swather and the baler, only I could get them through therd gate! There were lots of brandings ine neighborhood this week. Taz andig went to help brand at Rone Jen-ns on Monday while Casey, Missyd Bryce went to the high school

practice rodeo in Isabel. The Bar Hbranded on Tuesday. Casey, Taz andTrig helped brand Bill and TonyHolts calves Wednesday, Claudiaand Taylor Vroman branded towardthe end of the week, and Ron Slababranded on Sunday during the re-gional high school rodeo in Buffalo.

These guys got the last bunch of latecalves branded this Monday andnow were looking forward to Dollsbranding at the Hackamore on Tues-day. Ill tell you all about that nextweek.

You know winter is over when Istart reporting on horse wrecksaround the community. On Thurs-day Richard Pecks horse slipped inthe mud and fell with him, knockinghim cold, and then in the process ofgetting back up the horse stompedright on Dicks chest breaking seven

ribs. He spent a day or so in the Het-tinger hospital and is slowly healing.Kelly Brittons horse bucked him offand buggered him up enough thathe missed working the arena at thehigh school rodeo Saturday. Hehelped on Sunday, but he was walk-ing pretty careful. Gary McCall also

had a horse wreck that put him inthe hospital in the Hills a week or soago, but hes out and about now. Becareful out there!

Amanda, Kiley and ReaveSchuchard came to A.I. our heifersFriday in the rain, and they finished

just as Greg and Stetson Urlacherbrought our bulls. They were allhere for lunch and a good visit.

The IRS scandal keeps gettingworse. If an organization used thewords Tea Party, Christian, Patriot,Conservative, or Constitution whenapplying to the IRS for tax-exemptstatus they were targeted for auditsand investigations and their appli-cations were delayed, usually forthree years or were never granted.Even Rev. Billy Graham was underinvestigation! Now people have

started to come forward telling howthe Obama administration orderedthem to be audited and investigated, not only by the IRS, but also by theDOJ, the FBI, the EPA, OSHA, ATF,NSA, Homeland Security and nu-merous other government depart-ments. This is scary and infuriating!

Lets hope the long arm of govern-

ment is just as incompetent duringthese unlawful investigations as thisguy:

A cowboy named Bud was ridingthrough livestock in a remote pas-ture in western Dakota when sud-denly a brand-new BMW advancedtoward him in a cloud of dust.

The driver, a young man in aBrioni suit and Gucci shoes leanedout the window and asked the cow-boy, "If I tell you exactly how manycows and calves you have in yourherd, will you give me a calf?"

Bud looks at the man, who obvi-ously is a yuppie, then looks at hispeacefully grazing herd and calmlyanswers, "Sure, why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whipsout his notebook computer, connectsit to his cell phone, and surfs to aNASA page on the Internet, wherehe calls up a GPS satellite to get anexact fix on his location which hethen feeds to another NASA satel-lite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens thedigital photo and exports it to an

image processing facility in Ham-burg, Germany ... Within seconds, hereceives an email on his Palm Pilotthat the image has been processedand the data stored. He then ac-cesses an MS-SQLdatabase throughan ODBC connected Excel spread-sheet with email on his Blackberry, after a few minutes, receives a re-
