  • November is

Poppy MonthNovember is poppy month, the

time of the year when by the

wearing of a simple emblem, a

    red poppy, we salute the

    m e m o r y o f t h o s e w h o

    sacrificed their health, their

    strength, even their lives, that

we might live in a free country.

Remembrance Day in Australia is an occasion to

commemorate and remember all Australians who have died

    as a result of war.

Australians observe one minute's silence at 11am on 11

November each year to remember those who died or suffered

from Australia's involvement in all wars and armed conflicts.

It is commemorated on this day because It was at 11am on 11

November 1918 that the guns on the Western Front fell silent

after more than four years continuous war. The hostilities

ceased and it was an end to the Great War.

    What is HIPPY?

HIPPY is a free two-year home-based early childhood enrichment program. HIPPY builds the

confidence and skills of parents and carers to create a positive learning environment to prepare

their child for school. HIPPY is delivered through a mix of home visits and parent groups. HIPPY

Upper Ross is open to families who live in Condon, Rasmussen and Kelso.

HIPPY Upper Ross is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, through the Home

Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters.

The program is managed by the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) on behalf of the Australian Government,

through HIPPY Australia. BSL has sub-license arrangements with NQ Community Services to deliver the program

    in the Upper Ross

    HIPPY helps children by:

preparing them for a confident start to school

building their self-esteem and confidence in learning

providing opportunities to enjoy time with their parents.

How old does my child need to be to start HIPPY?

Children join HIPPY in the year before they start formal schooling (usually around four years old).

How will HIPPY help me and my child?

HIPPY helps parents/carers learn many things including:

how to be more involved in their child's learning

understanding more about child development and the way children learn

encouraging a love of learning in children.

  • Rotary Supports NQ Community Services

On behalf of NQ Community Services, Susan Perry

would like to thank Rotary Club of Port of Townsville

for their very generous donation of $3000.

This will help towards delivering programs through

the Upper Ross Community Centre and as we grow

our involvement with young people it will certainly

    help make a difference.

You need: 1 pkt of vanilla cake mix, 1 tin crushed pineapple, 20cm round cake tin

To make: Drain pineapple really well and set aside. Use juice from pineapple to make

the cake mix (use a little less liquid than specified on cake mix pkt instructions as the

pineapple will add moisture). Mix crushed pineapple into the cake mix. Pour into a lined

(or greased) 20cm cake tin and cook as per cake mix instructions. So easy & delicious.

    RECIPE: Easy Pineapple Cake

  • A frog walks into a bank and croaks, "I'd like a loan, please!" The teller says, "You will

have to see our loan officer, Patty Black."

The frog hops over to Miss Black's office, and says, "I'd like a loan, please." She replies,

"Do you have any collateral, Mr. Frog?"

He pulls out a little statue of a white elephant. She tells him, "I will have to talk to the

bank manager. She goes to the bank manager and tells him, "There's a frog out there

who wants to get a loan, and the only collateral he has is this. I don't even know what it

is!" The bank manager replies, "It's a knick knack, Patty Black, give the frog a loan!"

    JOKE TIME

  • Residents of the Upper Ross have had a win in the push to improve road

safety in the area. Flashing lights will be installed on Allambie Lane to alert

drivers to the school zone. This will improve safety for students at

Rasmussen State School and Good Shepherd Catholic Community College.

The zone also includes three local early learning centres and the PCYC.

Recently I launched Operation Riverway Drive to get better roads in the

Upper Ross. For too long the residents and business owners in the Upper

Ross have put up with inadequate and outdated road infrastructure.

Riverway Drive narrows from four lanes to two at the Gollogly Lane

intersection, bringing traffic to a standstill at peak times. My aim with

Operation Riverway Drive is to extend the four lanes to Allambie Lane. I will

also work with the Townsville City Council and other stakeholders to find

other ways of improving traffic problems in the Upper Ross.

This is my number one priority road project and I am taking the fight to

Brisbane, with a petition that will be lodged in Parliament before the end of

the year. Check out my website ( ) or my Facebook

page for more information about Operation Riverway Drive and how you can

    show your support.
