The ambivalence of the instruction "for yourself" leads the Midrash (cited by Rashi) to explain that the instruction was not G-d's idea but rather a conces- sion to the will of the people. As Moshe records in Devarim (1:22), the idea of sending the spies had originated neither with Moshe nor with G-d, but rather with the people. Moshe - and G-d - acquiesced to their request. And here G-d makes clear at the outset that He is not wholly in favor of the idea. Many commentators struggle with a basic question here. Being that G-d did not ini- tially approve, and that - whatever His concerns were - the tragic results of the sending of spies bear out His concern, why did He not only go along with the idea but even turn it into a Mitz- vah? And furthermore, how could the people make the same mistake twice? How is it that thirty-nine years later, as the Jews prepared to enter the land of Canaan under the leadership of Yehoshua, they again used the approach of sending spies ahead (see today's Haftorah)? HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR: MINCHA & KABBOLAS SHABBOS The Shulchan Aruch (263:15) rules that once someone has accepted upon themselves the Shabbos they may no longer Daven Friday’s Mincha prayer. However in a situation where the individ- ual has not accepted the Shabbos but their community has, while – as we have noted before – the individual may not do actions forbidden on Shabbos, they may still daven Mincha as long as they do not do it in the shul where the community has already accepted Shabbos. Thus one who arrives at shul Friday night when the community has already concluded Lecha Dodi should daven Mincha in a different room, not in the main shul with the community that is already Shabbos’dik. Similarly a woman who – as we have learned – generally accepts Shabbos upon lighting candles should make every effort to daven Mincha (if she is accustomed to doing so) before candle-lighting, as once she has lit it is already Shabbos and she may no longer daven weekday Mincha (MB 263:43). She may also light first but make an explicit condition that she is not completely accepting Shabbos vis-à-vis davening Mincha later (see Shemira Shabbos Kehilchaso ch. 43 fn 128). Finally, as it is a Mitzvah to accept Shab- bos a bit early, i.e. before sunset, and one cannot accept Shabbos before davening Mincha, one should make sure not to delay completing their Mincha until after sunset on Friday evenings, so that once they complete Mincha they can still accept an early Shabbos (see SSK 46:5). PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

SENDING SPIES

Our Parsha begins with G-d instructing Moshe to send "for yourself" (Shelach lecha)

spies to explore the land of Canaan. The ambivalence of the instruction "for yourself" leads the

Midrash (cited by Rashi) to explain that the instruction was not G-d's idea but rather a conces-

sion to the will of the people. As Moshe records in Devarim (1:22), the idea of sending the spies

had originated neither with Moshe nor with G-d, but rather with the people. Moshe - and G-d -

acquiesced to their request. And here G-d makes clear at the outset that He is not wholly in

favor of the idea.

Many commentators struggle with a basic question here. Being that G-d did not ini-

tially approve, and that - whatever His concerns were - the tragic results of the sending of spies

bear out His concern, why did He not only go along with the idea but even turn it into a Mitz-

vah? And furthermore, how could the people make the same mistake twice? How is it that

thirty-nine years later, as the Jews prepared to enter the land of Canaan under the leadership of

Yehoshua, they again used the approach of sending spies ahead (see today's Haftorah)?

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR:

MINCHA & KABBOLAS SHABBOS

The Shulchan Aruch (263:15) rules that once someone has accepted upon themselves the

Shabbos they may no longer Daven Friday’s Mincha prayer. However in a situation where the individ-

ual has not accepted the Shabbos but their community has, while – as we have noted before – the

individual may not do actions forbidden on Shabbos, they may still daven Mincha as long as they do

not do it in the shul where the community has already accepted Shabbos. Thus one who arrives at

shul Friday night when the community has already concluded Lecha Dodi should daven Mincha in a

different room, not in the main shul with the community that is already Shabbos’dik. Similarly a

woman who – as we have learned – generally accepts Shabbos upon lighting candles should make

every effort to daven Mincha (if she is accustomed to doing so) before candle-lighting, as once she has

lit it is already Shabbos and she may no longer daven weekday Mincha (MB 263:43). She may also light

first but make an explicit condition that she is not completely accepting Shabbos vis-à-vis davening

Mincha later (see Shemira Shabbos Kehilchaso ch. 43 fn 128). Finally, as it is a Mitzvah to accept Shab-

bos a bit early, i.e. before sunset, and one cannot accept Shabbos before davening Mincha, one should

make sure not to delay completing their Mincha until after sunset on Friday evenings, so that once

they complete Mincha they can still accept an early Shabbos (see SSK 46:5).
