Remember the good olddays when doctorswould make housecalls? Those days are

long gone. Today, we’re in anera of assembly-line medicine.HMOs call the shots … andeveryone feels the squeeze.

To make up for it, doctors’offices try to cram as many ap-pointments as possible into aday. And to get to all those pa-tients, doctors often take short-cuts during the physical —shortcuts that can seriously af-fect your health! Here are thesteps most commonly omitted:

■ Blood pressure. Thisvital sign is typically checked inone arm while the patient is sit-ting. But for a more accuratereading, blood pressure shouldbe tested in both arms, prefer-ably while you’re lying down.Why both arms? Because a dif-ference in blood pressure be-tween one arm and the othermay indicate a blockage in oneof the large blood vessels!(To be significant, this differ-ence must be 15% or more.)

By the way, if you’re takingblood pressure medication,your doctor should check yourblood pressure a third time, im-mediately after you stand up. Ifthe pressure drops by morethan 10%, you may need tochange your dosage.

■ Hamstrings. Few doc-tors test these muscles at the

back of thethighs to iden-tify potentialback prob-lems. To doso, the doctorshould askyou to lie onyour back andlift each leg toa 90° angle.

If you can’t perform the lift,you may need a stretching pro-gram to relax the hamstrings.

■ Lymph nodes. Doctorsusually check the lymph nodesin the neck, but often neglect tocheck the nodes in the groinand underarms. But checkingall the lymph nodes is impor-tant, since swollen lymphnodes may signal infection, andlumps could mean cancer.

■ Pulse points. Your doc-tor probably checks your pulsein your neck and/or groin —but may skip your feet. If pulsestrength differs in these 3 areas,it can be a sign of peripheral ar-terial disease.

■ Thyroid. This butterfly-shaped gland at the base of theneck is often missed during thelymph node exam. By tappingon the thyroid, your doctor canscreen for thyroid cancer.

Laboratory TestsMost doctors check your

cholesterol … your liver andkidney function ... your blood

sugar … and your white bloodcell count. But today we knowthere are other blood tests thatare just as important. Thesetests include...

■ Magnesium. Low levelsof this mineral can cause fa-tigue, generalized pain and/ormuscle spasms. They can alsoincrease your risk of a heart at-tack!
