Performance Notes
Henry Purcell, considered by many to be “the finest composer of his day,” is one of the Baroque period’s greatest composers. Born in 1659 in London, he only lived to be 36 years old. He was the organist at Westminster Abbey for many years. This piece, written for the birthday of Queen Mary in 1694, is from the multi-movement work Birthday Ode for Queen Mary. The work includes other well-known odes, such as “Sound the Trumpet” and “Strike the Viol.”
Purcell wrote Come Ye Songs of Art in the key of D major for four voices with orchestra. My arrangement for three-part mixed choir (Part III with limited six-note range) with an optional baritone part is set in the “rich” key of A≤ major. Feel free to use the optional baritone part as it best suits the needs of your ensemble.
Additionally, the melody, originally heard in the alto part, is sung by Part I. The piano accompaniment has been arranged to accommodate a competent pianist of any age or experience. I have also provided two solo sections that are “answered” by the other voices. Although the Part III solo is in the limited range, it may be sung in the full range by singing the cue sized notes.
I believe this arrangement offers an authentic version of the Purcell original, while offering choirs more accessibility to this wonderful piece.
