One final autumn fling against the fillies for flying Rubick three-year-oldAll Aged Stakes ruled out for Prime Thoroughbreds’ in-form million dollar earner Rubisaki

MORNING BRIEFING

Soul Patch to stand at Rangal Park StudGroup 2 winner and twice Group 1-placed colt

Soul Patch (Shamus Award), whose career

was curtailed by a tendon injury, will stand at

Victoria’s Rangal Park Stud this year. The Ken

Keys-trained rising four-year-old, who won

the Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) last

spring, was retired from racing after his third in

the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) behind

Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) and Superstorm

(Sebring) in February. “What would he have

done if he was injury free?” Rangal Park Stud’s

Eric Buttler said. “With Snitzel on his top line

and Flying Spur on his female side (dam God

Bless Us), there is plenty of speed there, although

Soul Patch got over a bit of ground, you would

think breeding speed to him would really be

right up his alley.” Soul Patch will stand for an

introductory service fee of $8800 (inc GST) in

2020 at the Euroa stud, while lifetime breeding

rights are also being offered in the son of Shamus

Award (Snitzel). Morning Briefing page 4 >>

“She wouldn’t have been out of place

in the All Aged - she’s about fifth in the early markets I think - but she is

not ready for that. If it had come up with six runners, then we might have

had a throw at the stumps,” O’Neill told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“(The J H B Carr Stakes) is another Group 3 and it will be her last race

for the season. She will go to Yarraman Park for a spell where she will have

six weeks off and then be prepared for the Golden Eagle in the spring.”

The long-time syndicator believes the best is still ahead of Rubisaki

and he called on his past experience of managing talented fillies and mares

including three-time Listed winner Unchain My Heart (Al Maher), Belle

Of The Turf Stakes (Listed, 1600m) winner Hidden Wonder (Danzero),

Calming (Zeditave), Unabated (Encosta De Lago) and Savoureux

(Nadeem) who took out the 2016 Wenona Girl Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m).

“I am a great believer in letting three-year-old fillies running against

their own sex if they can and work their way through the grades and then

you’ve got them as four and five-year-olds when there’s so many good

races for them,” he said.

“I think we have looked after her very well. In 12 months’ time she will

be a powerhouse and we are starting to see that development now that

wasn’t there before.

“She is an amazing athlete and when I bought her she was very light

on her feet. She’s got that when she

races. Every start this preparation

at some stage she’s been in trouble

and then, bang, she gets out of it in

a couple of strides.

“She goes sideways and it’s

like watching a great rugby league

centre, she just accelerates off that

foot.”

Nash Rawiller will retain the

ride on Rubisaki, who is being

stabled at Goulburn where she

was based in the week leading up

to the postponed $1 million Inglis

Sprint (1200m) at Warwick Farm

in February.

“She’s staying at John Bateman’s at Goulburn in Guy Walter’s old

stables. Patrick is talking to John daily and he is sending videos through of

how she looks and he is very happy with her,” he said.

“She will probably have a gallop (this) morning I would think,

but the mail we’re getting back is that she is eating everything up

and looks amazing. I couldn’t believe it when I saw a video of her

the other day.”

O’Neill bought Rubisaki, a half-sister to Prime Thoroughbreds’ Payne-

trained Zizzis (Sizzling), for $85,000 at the 2018 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale

from Edinburgh Park’s Ian Smith in a well-told “sting” in which he did not

show any public interest in the then yearling at Riverside Stables so he did

not give away the ability of the then unraced Zizzis.

Now a rising five-year-old, Zizzis is back in work with Payne at his

Plumpton complex near Melbourne after a Tasmanian raid had to be

aborted earlier this year after being cast in her box.

O’Neill also purchased the latest yearling out of Senro Kisaki (Danehill

Dancer), a brother to Zizzis (Sizzling), for $100,000 from Edinburgh Park

at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and will join the

same stable as his older siblings.

“He is a really nice horse and he’s a beautiful animal. He is different to

Zizzis - he has a bit more scope where she was short coupled, strong type

of horse,” he said,

O’Neill also owns the pair’s older sister Husson’s Kiss (Husson),

having purchased her out of a paddock from Patinack Farm as a weanling,

and he retained her as a broodmare when her racing career was cut short

after fracturing a pelvis.

Her first foal by Wordsmith (Testa Rossa) made $40,000 at the recent

Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale, with O’Neill buying out his

partner in the horse.

“The breaker rang me and told me that he was one of the most athletic

horses that I have ever touched,” he said.

“He is a really nice colt. Husson’s Kiss is in foal to Sizzling and she will

likely go to Rubick this year. It would probably be silly not to if I could get

a three-quarter to Rubisaki.”

Senro Kisaki, meanwhile, has a weanling filly by So You Think

(High Chaparral) and was covered last December by Rubick (Encosta

De Lago).

Spill The Beans colt tops online Capricornia Yearling Sale

Bidding on the Capricornia Yearling sale, which

took place via bloodstockauction.com, drew to

a close on Tuesday, with top lot honours going

to Lot 26, a colt by Spill The Beans (Snitzel) for

$48,950. Attracting 74 bids, the colt is the second

foal out of the winning Luna Azzura (Magnus),

and hails from the family of Group 1 winners

Victory Vein (Mr Henrysee) and Shadow Hero

(Pierro). He was closely followed by Lot 76,

a Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) filly

out of the six-time winner Bam’s Princess (Red

Dazzler), who sold for $41,500.

Champagne test for Not An OptionNew Zealand-trained juvenile Not An Option

(Not A Single Doubt) will be tested in Saturday’s

ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) with the

view of sending him to Brisbane for the revised

winter carnival. Not An Option, who is prepared

by Tony Pike, ran third in the Kindergarten

Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at his most recent start,

and will make the big step up in distance for

the first time. “We were really pleased with his

run in the Kindergarten,” Pike said. “Over the

1100m, from the outside gate and to go back to

last, it was always going to be a bit sharp for him.

He was very strong over the final stages. Reports

are really good and he has bounced through it in

great order. He galloped on the course proper at

Rosehill this (Tuesday) morning with an older

country cups horse and worked really well over

1200 metres.” Pike earmarked the revamped

J J Atkins Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) in Brisbane as a

target during the winter.

Blinkers on BrandenburgDual Group 1-placed colt Brandenburg

(Burgundy) will race in blinkers for the first

time in the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at

Randwick. After Brandenburg worked in blinkers

over 1000 metres yesterday at Randwick, trainer

John Sargent confirmed it was all systems go for

Saturday's race for what will be the colt's final

start this preparation, which includes a last-start

third in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). "He

doesn't get in as well at the weights as he did in

the Doncaster but he's a good three-year-old,"

Sargent said. "He won the Hobartville over the

distance. He galloped well today. He'll go to the

beach tomorrow and have an easy week and he'll

be ready. I was just going to wait for (yesterday) for

his main gallop and he galloped well."

Hallmark possible for GraffA Group 1 in Queensland is on the cards for

stallion prospect Graff (Star Witness), who is

expected to return to racing in the next fortnight.

He will be an acceptor for the Hall Mark Stakes

(Gr 3, 1200m) on Saturday but trainer Kris Lees

is mulling over whether to run his galloper

at Randwick or wait for the rescheduled

Hawkesbury meeting at Rosehill. If waiting for

the latter, the colt would run in the Hawkesbury

Gold Rush (Listed, 1100m). Both options would

be a stepping stone to target the Stradbroke

Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm. Since

his last start, Graff has been acquired by Aquis

in partnership with Australian Bloodstock.

Newnham heads south for ShowdownThe significant prize-money on offer in The

Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield is the incentive

for Sydney trainer Mark Newnham to send lightly

raced colt Write On (Written Tycoon) south for

the race. The sprint for two year-olds has a purse

of $855,000 with first prize-money of $450,000

and is restricted to the progeny of VOBIS Sires

stallions. The Showdown, to be run for the

second year on Saturday, is the richest race on the

Victorian Owners and Breeders Race Day. Write

On finished third in a 1000-metre maiden against

his own age at Kembla Grange on debut last week

and is among 24 nominations for The Showdown.

"He'll travel down on Wednesday night and he'll

stay with Nick Ryan at Caulfield," Newnham said.

"Under the new protocols, Nick will look after him

for a couple of days. I've stayed with Nick a couple

of times already. Quite often these types of races

drop away at the end of carnivals like this. It's not

a bad little grand final for him. I had it in mind for

a while."

Perth WFA targets for Humidor

Dual Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) placegetter

Humidor (Teofilo) will head a trio of Group

One winners that his trainer Lindsey Smith

plans to race in Perth this winter. The original

plan for the trio was to race in Queensland

but the COVID-19 pandemic has vastly

reduced the state’s racing program. “Perth

might have the best racing in Australia over

winter,” Smith told Racing.com on Tuesday.

“I had Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) going for

those weight-for-age races and he came back

especially for these races and these other

horses have now joined him, so I hope they

win one each.” Smith said Black Heart Bart’s

travelling days will come to an end, as the

rising ten-year-old is likely to enter his final

racing campaign. “He’ll finish racing here,”

Smith told Racing.com from Perth. “He won’t

be back. But I think he’s got another win in

him.”

Boss cold on Colette’s cup chancesGlen Boss has issued a warning to punters keen

to side with Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m)

winner Colette (Hallowed Crown) in the

Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) futures market.

Boss, who rode the filly to victory in the Oaks,

is doubtful over the filly’s ability to take the

necessary jump: “This happens every year

and 99 per cent of the time it doesn’t come

off. So you’ve got to be a very, very good, and

I’m talking almost champion three-year-old

filly to take that next step to a Caulfield Cup,”

Boss told RSN927. It's such a massive jump.

I can’t tell people how much of a leap it is for

the three-year-old fillies. They’ve been racing

against their own age and they get into these

oaks where more than likely two thirds of the

field won’t stay the trip.” Colette is rated a $21

chance for the race.

Hickmott pair on comeback trailCaulfield trainer Rob Hickmott is planning a

return for his star duo Schabau (Pastorius) and

Django Freeman (Campanologist). Restrictions

from COVID-19 have made planning for the

pair difficult but the trainer is confident they

will return racing soon. Schabaul, who has

been sidelined since a small lesion was found

in his right fore tendon, is likely to be aimed

at Flemington. Django Freeman, who needed

surgery for a chip in his knee, could head for the

Adelaide Carnival. “Him and Django Freeman

have been hamstrung with the away gallops.

We would have been at Sandown galloping out

there, Bendigo maybe as well,” Hickmott told

Racing.com. “Those places are shut up and it’s

stinted their preparations a touch. We don’t

want to take any risks with them on inferior

ground, so we will just wait for those course

propers at Caulfield and get that work into

them.”

Blinkers on CostelloTrainer David Payne has opted for blinkers

on his galloper Costello (Americain) at

Randwick on Wednesday despite the gelding’s

consistency, placing four times in as many

starts. Payne is hoping to go one step further on

his next start in the Press Statement @ Vinery

Handicap (1800m). “I always do it as a last

resort,” he told Racing NSW. “We tried him the

other day and he seemed a much better horse

with them on. On his best form he should win

a race like this.” Costello was the $2.90 favourite

on Tuesday with TAB and is looking to post his

first win since February last year.

Melbourne goal for promising ThrasherWell-bred filly Thrasher (Not A Single Doubt)

could take up a place at Melbourne this spring

if she breaks her maiden tag at the Sunshine

Coast today. Trained by Chris Munce, who

holds her in high regard, Thrasher runs in

the QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap

(1400m). Sold for $430,000 at the Magic

Millions sales at the Gold Coast in January of

last year. She is a granddaughter of Merlene,

who won both the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr

1, 1200m) and ATC Sires Produce Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m) in just six starts. Thrasher’s third

dam, Bold Promise, won the Magic Millions

Classic (Restricted Listed, 1200m) twice when

it was run in two divisions. Munce believes

Thrasher has a bright future and hopes to

head to Brisbane for their winter feature races

before a program geared towards the Victoria

Oaks in Melbourne in spring.

Chenier sold to Hong KongThree-year-old Chenier (Medaglia D’Oro) has

been sold to race in Hong Kong, in a reported

seven figure deal. The former Godolphin

galloper was purchased by clients of leading

Hong Kong trainer Caspar Fownes. The horse

passed the vet and the deal was completed on

Tuesday. The deal was brokered by agent Wade

Burridge. Godolphin’s Australian manager

Vin Cox told Racing.com: “We operate in a

commercial environment and when you get

a good offer for a horse, you have to evaluate

where you sit on the horse and what the future

may be. He is a horse with a lot of potential and

it wasn’t an easy decision.” Chenier has been

gelded since his ninth-place run in the Rosehill

Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) last month. “He will be

targeted at the four-year-old series over there.

Hopefully he is good enough to measure up,”

Burridge said.

Belmont Guineas possible for Karijini AuroraYoung trainer Summer Dickson is hoping her

exciting filly Karijini Aurora (Trade Fair) can

put her on the big stage in the next few months.

After finishing fourth on debut , the filly won

her next three starts. Her latest win came in the

Tabtouch Ladies Bracelet at Albany on Sunday,

winning by just under a length. “She has proven

to be a good horse and has come a long way,”

Dickson told The Races WA. “This is only her

first preparation, she came to me straight from

the breakers. When I jumped her out I knew she

was going to be a little special. I will probably

aim her at one metro 1600m event or a 3YO

race, if she handles that well we will continue

stepping up the grades.”

VJA floats jump out planThe Victorian Jockeys’ Association (VJA) is

set to plan with Racing Victoria to allow self-

quarantining jockeys to be allowed to ride

in one set of jumpouts a week. The jockeys,

known as the green team, volunteered to put

themselves in self isolation and forgo all riding

outside raceday as part of Racing Victoria’s

COVID-19 protocols.“We will probably have

some discussions with Racing Victoria over

the next couple of days to see what we can do.

Maybe introduce a set of jumpouts that those

guys can participate in,” Matt Hyland told

Racing.com. “It’s been fairly difficult for them.

Their fitness, their normal routine has been

compromised.”

Interstate doubt over Queensland carnivalDoubt remains over whether Queensland’s

revised winter carnival will allow for

interstate participation with authorities

set to confirm details in the coming days.

Racing Queensland’s Chief Executive

Brendan Parnell told RSN 927’s Racing Pulse

on Tuesday: “At the moment there are new

border restrictions announced over the

weekend so we are working through new

state government guidelines and as far as

whether they (interstate horses) can travel

or not will be established over the coming

days. "It would appear on first read that it is

for essential or exempt travel and whether

livestock is classified in that or not, and once

that is confirmed we’ll let southern trainers

know.” On March 26, Racing Queensland (RQ)

announced the COVID-19 pandemic had

forced it to cancel the winter racing carnival,

however on April 10, RQ stated there would

be 15 Group races staged across the six-week

carnival period with reduced prize-money.

Alligator Blood B sample confirmed

A second sample has confirmed the prohibited

substance altrenogest in the swab taken from

Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) after he won the

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the

Gold Coast. Trainer David Vandyke will now

face a stewards' inquiry at a date to be set. If he

is found guilty of presenting horse to race with

a prohibited substance it is likely he would face

a fine but Alligator Blood would be disqualified

from first place in the January 11 race and

the $1.1 million first prize would be forfeited.

Alligator Blood has since won two races in

Melbourne including the Australian Guineas.

The swabs from those races have been cleared

and prize-money has been paid. "This presents

a challenging time. Since moving to Queensland

in May 2016 this is the first irregularity that I

have had in this state," Vandyke said. "It is my

hope that the inquiry will shed light on how

altrenogest entered Alligator Blood's system

and help prevent any similar incident occurring

in racing again."

Endresz engages legal team in Alligator defenceAllan Endresz, owner of Alligator Blood, and his

legal team claim to have found a contradiction

within the wording of rules which he thinks

would give grounds for his star performer to

avoid disqualification from the Magic Millions

3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m). “We’ve had a good

look at it and we’re challenging that rule

(AR240),” Endresz told Racing.com. “On the face

of it (the rule), it would suggest an automatic

disqualification. Now the way in which the

rules have been drafted, there may or may not

be a perceived loophole or incompetence in the

way it was drafted. In simple terms, if one goes

and says the horse is automatically disqualified

well then that rule (AR240) is retrospectively

having an impact on AR214 that simply says

the judge’s decisions are final.” He continued,

“We’ve lost enormously as a result of this, not

just the money but the reputation of the horse

and contracts with the TAB for The Everest.”

Thoroughbred Breeders conducting COVID-19 surveyA survey about the impact of coronavirus on

breeders is being conducted by Thoroughbred

Breeders Australia (TBA). The online survey,

to gain insight into the issues that have

been placed on breeders since the spread of

COVID-19 to Australia in recent months, is

Allen and Brown heading to AdelaideVictorian jockeys John Allen and Ethan Brown

will head to South Australia to complete 14 days

of self-isolation in order to ride at the Adelaide

carnival. Brown, 21, has been booked to ride

Sierra Sue in the South Australian Oaks (Gr 1,

2000m) as well as Snogging (I Am Invincible)

and I Am Eloquent (I Am Invincible) in other

stakes races. Irishman Allen will complete

isolation with Brown while fellow Victorian

rider Damien Thornton will also undergo the

lockdown to take rides in Adelaide. Apprentice

Georgina Cartwright travelled to Adelaide

recently and will be free to ride at Morphettville

from Saturday.

McEvoy suspended at Warwick FarmKerrin McEvoy is set to miss the Hawkesbury

Guineas meeting at Rosehill after being

suspended at Warwick Farm. McEvoy pleaded

guilty to a charge of failing to ride Godolphin-

owned Duenna (Sepoy) out to the end of the

Monday's Hyland Race Colours Plate (1300m),

with the filly finishing in a dead-heat for second

with Stolen Jade (So You Think). McEvoy was

suspended for a week from Sunday, a day after

Group 1 racing ends for the season in Sydney.

James McDonald was fined $1500 at Monday's

meeting for using the whip unnecessarily inside

the final 100 metres of the Darley Stallions

Handicap (1400m) on Adana (Snitzel) who

finished seventh. Adam Hyeronimus was fined

$500 for entering a jockeys' room other than the

one he had been allocated.

Stockdale bannedThomas Stockdale’s rise through Melbourne

Jockeys’ Premiership continued on Easter

Monday, and won’t be affected by the careless

riding suspension incurred at the Sandown

Lakeside meeting. Stockdale pleaded guilty on

his winning ride aboard Jack Regan, edging

out when insufficiently clear. The jockey was

handed an eight meeting suspension - with his

penalty to commence after Saturday’s Caulfield

meeting. He will return in time for the following

Saturday at Flemington, with no Melbourne

metropolitan racing between those fixtures.

Stockdale has ridden 18 winners in Melbourne

this season, placing him third in the Melbourne

apprentice title.

Gone Bye set for G3 Frank Packer PlateTrainer Mark Newnham has had the Frank

Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) in mind for his

galloper Gone Bye (Al Maher) for some time,

but wasn’t expecting the gelding to be taking on

a Group 1 winner. Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400)

winner Quick Thinker (So You Think) will be

chasing his third consecutive win by contesting

in the Saturday’s Group 3. “That was a surprise

to see him there,” Newnham said. “I would

say if we get another wet track we probably

can’t beat him but as the track dries out it

probably gives everyone else a better chance.”

Gone Bye has won three of his five starts,

winning a 1600-metre race at Warwick Farm

last Wednesday. His original plans had been

changed due to abandonments. “He’s managed

to beat older horses in his last two wins and he

will appreciate going up to 2000 metres,” said

Newnham. “It’s a fair jump in grade but I think

he’s quite a capable horse.”

VOBIS Sires Guineas attracts 29 entriesGroup 2 winner and VRC Oaks placegetter

Moonlight Maid (Puissance de Lune) heads

the nominations for The VOBIS Sires Guineas

(1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The $427,500

race is for three-year-old progeny of Victorian

stallions. Moonlight Maid, the highest-rated in

the field, won the Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr

2, 1600m) at Flemington in the spring before

finishing runner-up in the Two Vase (Gr 2, 2040m)

and third in the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m).

The $31,500 2-y-o Maiden Plate (1006m) attracted

seven runners and the colt beat the Ciaron Maher

No Love Letters (Roderic O’Connor), the colt was

a $40,000 purchase at the 2019 Adelaide Yearling

Eagle Farm put on holdEagle Farm racecourse will have a slightly

extended hiatus with pressure to reopen it

sooner easing. Racing Queensland, which is

in charge of the Eagle Farm renovations, had

always planned to rest the track for up to six

weeks but that will now be eight weeks. The

track has not hosted a meeting since March 25

and the next one is planned for May 23. Eagle

Farm's course chopped up during the seven

meetings it had during February and March

and it was partly put down to a grub infestation

which has been addressed in recent weeks.

Paine sidelinedGai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s well-known

stable representative Neil Paine has been

banned from race meetings for a month after

contravening coronavirus protocols after the

stable’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

victory by Farnan (Not A SIngle Doubt). Paine ran

across the mounting yard to jubilantly embrace

Bott after the colt’s win on March 21. Paine

admitted to momentarily forgetting about the

restrictions after the race. Paine is still allowed to

attend trackwork while he serves his ban.

Pale King sold to Australian interestsImpressive British debut winner Pale King

(Dabirsim) has been sold to continue his career in

Australia. Trained by David Simcock, the colt has

been acquired by Rupert Legh and will be trained

by John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes. He won his

novice stakes (1m4f) on debut at Lingfield, less

than a week before the closure of British racing

due to the global pandemic. He was given an ultra

confident ride by Jamie Spencer, who loomed up

to the leader on the bridle amidst glances over his

shoulder, to draw clear impressively. “I’ve never

seen a more arrogant ride in my whole life,” Legh

told Racing.com.

Saudi Cup prize-money withheldThe Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia is withholding

Maximum Security's (New Year’s Day) winning

prize money for the US$20 million Saudi Cup

(1800m), after trainer Jason Servis was indicted on

federal charges in the United States. The trainer is

one of 27 people indicted by the District Attorney

for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan

as part of an investigation into alleged doping of

horses. Servis sent out Maximum Security, who

is now trained by Bob Baffert, to win the world's

richest race in Riyadh in February, but prize money

for the 1800-metre will not be paid until the JCSA has

finished its inquiries. "JCSA is conducting its own

investigation in respect of the allegations and until

that investigation is concluded, JCSA will withhold

payment of prize money due to all connections

of horses placed in prize-winning positions in the

Saudi Cup," a JCSA statement said. "This decision

has been communicated privately to connections

of Saudi Cup runners. Due to difficult operational

circumstances caused by the Covid-19 global

pandemic, the investigation has not yet concluded."

Ward eyeing Royal Ascot once againUS trainer Wesley Ward is still eager to make

his transatlantic trip to Royal Ascot, even with

the event being held behind closed doors. "We

wouldn't miss it for anything," he said. "If they

have it, we're going to be there provided they

let us come over. We're working on plans but

it's too early to know what will happen exactly."

Should his runners be given the green light to

compete, the man who prepared Lady Aurelia

(Scat Daddy) to land the 2017 King's Stand

Stakes looks set to launch an ambitious bid to

recapture the same prize with 2019 Breeders'

Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint hero Four Wheel

Drive (American Pharoah). The three-year-old,

who would receive a handy 6lb weight-for-age

allowance against his elders, has been pleasing

his trainer. Kimari (Munnings), who was

narrowly defeated in last season's Queen Mary

Stakes by Raffle Prize, recorded an unlikely

victory on a testing surface earlier this month at

Oaklawn Park in the Listed Purple Martin Stakes

and is also part of Ward's Ascot plans. "She's our

other older horse that we're pointing there,"

he said. "She showed a different dimension in

coming from behind in the slop like that. She's

got a big heart and we'll be pointing her at the

Commonwealth Cup."

South Africa eyes 1 May resumptionRacing authorities in South Africa are planning

for a resumption of racing behind closed doors

on May 1, subject to the national lockdown being

lifted by then. The South African government

extended the Covid-19 lockdown until the end

of April and, after numerous meetings between

the Racing Operators, the Racing Association

and The National Horseracing Authority

over the Easter weekend, the target of a May

resumption was announced. The National

Horseracing Authority said in a recent Press

Release: "Given that we will have effectively

lost five weeks of racing, the Racing Operators

have agreed to push the National Feature Race

Programme back around a month, which will

mean that the Vodacom Durban July (Gr 1,

2200m) will take place on the last Saturday in

July [with the Gold Cup meeting pushed out to

the end of August]. This will allow the Highveld

to move a slightly revamped Champions Day

[featuring the Champions Challenge (Gr 1,

2000m) and six other major races] to the last

Saturday in May and stage the Horse Chestnut

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)], SA Derby (Gr 1, 2450m)]

and SA Oaks (Gr 2, 2450m) on Saturday 2 May.”Maximum Security (pink cap) RACING POST

Mainstream and social media

is awash right now with “best

of” lists from past players

from a multitude of codes,

from journalists and from punters near and far.

This is no surprise as housebound fans seek to

be amused.

So why not get in on the act, I thought? Just for

fun…and perhaps for the feedback which I’m sure

will be rife once we tweet the link to this.

Thus, I’ve produced my ever so slightly left

field list of the top five horses to have competed

in Australia in the post War era.

Freakish talent or a freakish performance

was the key criterion above all else and I’ve

made my best guess as to the likelihood that the

horse would have excelled, despite the obvious

and inherent subjectivity, in any era. Raw talent

rather than times or margins or longevity or

even winning streaks.

I am comfortable in declaring Black Caviar

the best Australian horse of the era.

1. BLACK CAVIARThere has, by logical definition, never been

a better performed horse (anywhere, let alone

Australia) than Black Caviar. Unbeaten in 25

starts, all at a legitimate level of competition

with all but her debut being in stakes races and

the final 22 at either Group 1 or Group 2 level.

I have never seen another horse with her

freakish stride which, again by definition,

had her make ground quicker than any other

horse I’ve seen and she did it - seemingly -

effortlessly.

The references to

the strength of her

form are boundless,

chiefly through Hay

List and Buffering.

Who could forget the

Gr 1 T.J. Smith Stakes of

2011 when she gave Hay List four lengths start

at the 300 metres and won by almost three

lengths?

Glyn Schofield, who rode Hay List, swears

the runner-up wasn’t slowing down - she just

went faster. Hay List, next start a fortnight later,

won the Gr 1 All-Aged Stakes by 3.3 lengths.

Black Caviar thrashed Hay List and

Buffering in the 2012 Gr 1 Lightning Stakes

and, in her absence three weeks later, they

quinellaed the Gr 1 Newmarket Handicap -

with a space to third.

Black Caviar went to Royal Ascot, wasn’t at

her physical best and yet still beat Moonlight

Cloud, who then won five Group 1 races

including her next start (a Group 1) by five

lengths.

2. CRISPIt is, of course, well known that he conceded

23 pounds (almost 11 kilograms) to Red Rum

(who would prove to be the greatest Grand

National performer of all time, and the only

horse to win three) when tragically beaten in the

1973 National at Aintree - a sporting calamity

only rivalled by Jean van de Velde’s final hole

capitulation in the 1999 Open Championship.

Crisp was largely responsible for setting a

twenty seconds track record bettering pace. The

Guardian, at the time, reported that: “although

the prize had gone to Red Rum, the glory had

gone to Crisp”.

Similarly well known is that jockey Richard

Pitman has conceded that he made a mistake

by drawing the whip on Crisp. “He jumped the

second-last out of instinct, and went to the last,

and now I can hear Red Rum coming. It was

then that I made a mistake that will haunt me

for the rest of my life.

“I thought, ‘I’ve got to wake the old boy up,

get him out of his reverie.’ And I made a mistake

that a boy starting out shouldn’t make, let alone

a senior jockey. I picked the stick up in my right

hand to give him a whack, but I had to go right-

handed to get round the Elbow (the cross over

on to the finishing straight). The instant I lifted

my hand, he fell away left-handed. So, I quickly

put the stick down, gathered the reins, and

pulled him back.

“But I had to change his stride pattern,

and he lost momentum,” Pitman has said

previously.

Less known is that trainer Fred Winter said,

immediately after the race, that he believed

Crisp would have won had there been one more

fence to negotiate. The Sun quoted Winter: “If

there had been another fence in the straight he

would not have lost his concentration and I'm

sure he would have won.”

Crisp won the Hiskens Steeplechase,

then the Cox Plate of jumping, by 20 lengths

and 12 lengths respectively in 1969 and 1970.

He won by a street on debut in the UK, won

the equivalent of a Queen Mother Chase at

Cheltenham and trounced Red Rum when they

met at level weights.

3. RISING FASTHe won the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate

and Melbourne Cup treble in 1954. Plus the

Turnbull, Caulfield Stakes, Mackinnon

Stakes and the Fisher Plate

Then almost completed

the famous Cups double

again in 1955. He carried

63.5 kg in the Melbourne

Cup and ran second to

Toporoa who had just

48 kg. No protest was

lodged but the winning rider

Neville Sellwood was later suspended

for two months for interfering with the

run of Rising Fast.

4. VAINThe striking chestnut son of Wilkes won 12 of

his 14 starts, finishing as runner up on the other

two.. Set aside, for a moment, his remarkable

two-year-old season which included a 4 length

victory in the Golden Slipper Stakes and an

astonishing ten length win in the Champagne

Stakes.

Go straight to his three-year-old year. He

won the Caulfield Guineas by three lengths

and his only defeat, in the Moonee Valley

(Stutt) Stakes, was behind Daryl’s Joy who

then won the Cox Plate and the Victoria

Derby. Then, during Cup week, he won the

Craven 'A' Stakes by 12 lengths; the VRC

Linlithgow Stakes by six lengths and the

George Adams Handicap carrying 4.5 kg

above weight-for-age.

His jockey Pat Hyland, in 2010, said: ''I

have no doubt that up to 1600 metres we

haven't seen one better than Vain. Black

Caviar has an unblemished record and it

speaks for itself but making comparisons is

difficult but I still think he is the very best we

have had in Australia.”

5. WINXI’m not sure she competed through a

golden era of weight-for-age racing but it

would be churlish, and controversial just for

the sake of being controversial, to exclude

her given 33 straight wins including 25 at

Gr 1 level. She was resolute, dominant and

unyielding but - for me - not quite as freakish

as Black Caviar.

Magnificent in life, mysterious

in death, immortal forever.

Phar Lap (Night Raid) may

very well be the finest horse

who ever graced an Australian racecourse.

What is beyond doubt is his story is the most

incredible.

At a time when a hero was needed, one

emerged in the guise of the powerful galloper

who became revered by the people of a country

ravaged by the depression.

He was an athlete who inspired adoration

and affection from men and women whose

lives contained little other reason to feel hope

or joy. He was the winner of 37 races, a rags-

to-riches treasured public figure who made

Australia proud, never more so than when

shipped to Tijuana, Mexico, to defeat America's

finest thoroughbreds. Sixteen days later he was

dead.

It is a mark of Phar Lap's enduring fame

that his mounted hide has been the most

popular attraction in Melbourne Museum

since it was first exhibited in January 1933.

Everyone in Australia and New Zealand – the

land of his birth – knows of the horse whose

6.35kg heart was one and a half times bigger

than average. In droves they still come to see

him. They marvel at what they witness and

leave with the same

question people

have asked for 88

years – what killed

Phar Lap?

First one must

understand the

reason they care in

the first place – Phar

Lap kept finishing in

first place.

As a yearling

he cost just 160

yearlings in 1928,

bought by small-

time trainer Harry

Telford on behalf

of businessman David

Davis, an American living in Australia. On first

seeing the large and ungainly son of Night Raid,

Davis took an instant dislike. He no longer

wanted the Kiwi import. Telford very much did

and secured a three-year leasing arrangement.

It took a while for Telford's high opinion

of Phar Lap to prove justified. He lost nine of

his first ten races but then, helped by groom

Tommy Woodcock, who loved the horse as

much as the horse loved him, something

clicked. In the spring of 1929 Phar Lap won

Australia's two main Classics, the AJC Derby

and Victoria Derby. Sent off even money

favourite for the 1929 Melbourne Cup he could

finish only third, proving more than jockey

Bobbie Lewis could manage. His headstrong

tendencies undid him that day. Thereafter he

became nigh on unbeatable.

Phar Lap filled out his magnificent frame,

growing in size and rising in stature. Seven days

after placing against his name the 1930 Cox

Plate he sauntered home on the opening day of

the Melbourne Cup carnival in the Melbourne

(now Mackinnon) Stakes. Three days later his

legend was assured.

Carrying the welter burden of 9st 12lb and

partnered by now regular jockey Jim Pike, Phar

Lap produced what remains to this day the

finest Melbourne Cup-winning performance

of all time. At odds of 8-11 he was and is the

only horse to claim Australia's most celebrated

sporting contest at odds-on. He did it in a canter,

prompting Pike to say: "He's a great horse. In

fact he is the best horse Australia has ever seen

and I doubt they will ever see his equal. There's

only one chance they've got of beating him - if

they can breed them with wings on."

Phar Lap wins the1930 Melbourne Cup:

He carried on winning, following up his

Tuesday triumph with further Flemington

romps on the Thursday and Saturday of the

carnival. Having dazzled over two miles he

thrashed Australia's top sprinters in Caulfield's

1931 Futurity Stakes before returning to

Moonee Valley for a second Cox Plate later that

year. His failure to win the Melbourne Cup that

followed was no failure. It was at the hands not

of a horse with wings but a handicapper with

weights. Phar Lap was allocated the impossible

load of 10st 10lb. Even for him that was too

much.

He would not race in Australia again. In no

time at all he would not see Australia again.

With Telford staying at home, Phar Lap

was sent by Davis to North America for the

Agua Caliente Handicap on March 20, 1932, at

Agua Caliente racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico, just

across the border from San Diego. In front of a

record crowd Phar Lap won in a record time,

this time under Billy Elliot. The horse billed as

'the Red Terror from the Antipodes' was now a

star in the United States as well as Australia and

New Zealand. He was taken to California and

he died there.

It happened on April 5, 1932. Woodcock

always slept just a few yards from Phar Lap's

box. As soon as he woke he would greet his

friend with a sugar lump. When the sugar lump

was refused Woodcock became concerned. He

summoned vet Bill Neilsen, who had travelled

from Australia as part of the horse's entourage.

Neilsen suspected colic and initially felt Phar

Lap was beginning to show signs of progress.

Those signs were false. He succumbed to

whatever was ailing him at 2.30pm.

In a book chronicling the Melbourne Cup

from 1861 to 2000, author Maurice Cavanough

writes: "Woodcock, who had been Phar Lap's

devoted attendant since he first raced . . . was

completely distraught. He lay down by the dead

horse and clung to its neck, weeping bitterly,

before friends dragged him away." The 1983 film

Phar Lap features that very same heartbreaking

scene in its early moments.

Phar Lap was dead but they did not

know why. In Australia, where he had been a

symbol of patriotism through the dark days

of the depression, there was shock, horror

and an immediate move to blame America. It

was alleged the horse had been deliberately

poisoned, perhaps by underworld figures who

feared him going on a winning streak across the

US.

Nobody knew for sure then what had

happened. Nobody knows for sure now. Writer

Geoff Armstrong has been fascinated by Phar

Lap since he was a child and has written

a number of books and articles about

the icon's life and death. His opinion

carries plenty of weight.

"When the horse died they carried

out the post-mortem and expected to

find a blockage in the intestine – but it

wasn't there," says Armstrong.

"As a result, they just didn't know

what caused his death. The problem

was nothing fitted. There was no

explanation for why such a fit racehorse

should suddenly just die like that. That

created a situation whereby all sorts of

theories were able to take off and those

theories carried some weight. The ones that

carried the most weight were the sexiest ones,

linked to the idea of arsenic poisoning and

gangsters wanting to kill the horse.

"The truth is there was no reason for

gangsters to kill Phar Lap. It's also true they

checked for arsenic poisoning and in the

post-mortem they specifically say there wasn't

enough arsenic in the horse to kill him."

The arsenic theory has clung to Phar

Lap like his victory roll of honour. In 2006 vet

Graeme Pearce said that in a conversation 40

years earlier Neilsen claimed local authorities

had sprayed pasture for noxious weeds and that

Phar Lap died as a result of eating some of the

grass.

Also in 2006 a study of the horse's hair

concluded he had perished after ingesting

arsenic. Another report stated Woodcock had

inadvertently killed his charge by feeding him

a tonic that mistakenly contained excessive

levels of arsenic, which for much of the 20th

century was given to horses by some trainers,

including Telford.

"I get really dirty when people suggest it

was an arsenic poisoning caused by a mistake

made by Woodcock," says Armstrong. "A

colossal amount would have been needed to

kill the horse. It would have required the most

terrible error, one a horseman like Woodcock

simply would not have made.

"We once interviewed Bill Stutt, who was

the Moonee Valley chairman and a really

good friend of Woodcock. We asked him did

Tommy ever say he knew what happened. Bill

said Tommy never knew. At different stages of

his life he repeated whatever the theory of the

day was, so in the mid-1930s he said gangsters

poisoned the horse."

The gangster theory does not wash with

Armstrong, who instead believes Phar Lap died

of nothing more sinister than a gastrointestinal

disorder.

He explains: "When we did our book

in 2000 my original intention was to put all

the different theories out there and let the

reader decide. However, my co-author Peter

Thompson had the idea of showing the post-

mortem to a vet. We therefore presented it to

Dr John van Veenendaal, who was probably

Melbourne's leading racing vet at the time. He

The truth is there was no reason for gangsters to

immediately said it was duodenitis-proximal

jejunitis, a bacterial infection that shuts down

the intestine.

"The key point is that infection was not

discovered until 1982, so in 1932 the vets and

Tommy Woodcock were looking for something

that at the time they did not know existed. That's

why the mystery took off. Unfortunately, saying

Phar Lap died of a mere bacterial infection was

not very exciting, so even though we published

the evidence, and that evidence is clear, it has

not been accepted."

Armstrong adds: "In 2005 I did a book on

the 1930 Melbourne Cup and redid it in 2010,

by which stage the 'arsenic killed Phar Lap'

theory had again taken off. I contacted Dr Tam

Garland, the leading veterinary toxicologist in

America, and put all the evidence towards her.

Again, she immediately said it was duodenitis-

proximal jejunitis.

"It obviously can't be 100 per cent clear-

cut because we can't do a post-mortem today.

However, the evidence fits like the proverbial

glove. I don't think Phar Lap's death is a mystery

at all. I think it's quite clear what killed the

horse. In my opinion, the mystery of Phar Lap is

what happened in the shooting before the 1930

Melbourne Cup."

The shooting took place three days prior

to the Cup. Phar Lap had been given a light

workout at Caulfield as part of his build-up

to running at Flemington later in the day.

Woodcock, riding a pony, was leading the

champion when he spotted a parked car,

inside which were two men, one of whom was

suspiciously holding papers close to his face.

The car's number plate also appeared to have

been doctored.

The Argus, a daily morning newspaper in

Melbourne, reported: "When near Etna Street,

Woodcock heard the car

come up fast

behind him.

He pushed Phar

Lap up on to the

footpath close to

a hedge, placing

himself and his

pony between the

horse and the car.

He then saw a man in

the car with a double-barrel shotgun.

Woodcock dug his heels into the pony

and it shot forward. Feeling the pony

move sharply, Phar Lap did the same.

A shot was fired and it may have been

this sudden move forward that saved

the horse's life."

Phar Lap's connections had already

been advised to be on guard. They

had unexpectedly scratched Phar Lap

from the Caulfield Cup after previously

staking doubles on Amounis to win

that race – which he did – and Phar Lap to take

out the Melbourne Cup. Bookmakers faced a

chunky payout.

Offering his analysis, Armstrong says:

"These gangsters seemingly completely missed

the horse from point-blank range. When the

police went back to the scene of the crime on

the Saturday afternoon there were no signs

a shooting had taken place. There were no

shotgun pellets in a fence. There was nothing.

"I can obviously only guess, but the most

likely explanation I've got is it was a media stunt.

I think there were blanks in the gun. If it was a

genuine shooting they were pretty terrible at it."

In A Century Galloped By, a history of the

Victoria Racing Club published in 1988, John

Pacini writes: "Who 'owned' Phar Lap according

to the racebook was unimportant. His unofficial

owners were the people of Victoria. Thus, when

there was an attempt made on the horse's life on the

Saturday prior to the Cup, news of it swept through

Melbourne faster than a declaration of war."

Phar Lap's team did not want the horse to

be a victim of that war. Following his Saturday

saunter around Flemington they secretly

transported him to a stud nearly 50 miles

away in Geelong. He was due to leave there at

midday on Tuesday. In yet another scare, the

motor of the float that was set to take Phar Lap

to Flemington refused to fire up. Only after

30 minutes was it encouraged back to life. As

the clock ticked down to the off-time of the

Melbourne Cup radio stations repeatedly told

listeners that Phar Lap had not arrived at the

track and his whereabouts were unknown.

To enormous cheers, Phar Lap arrived at

the racecourse 40 minutes before the race was

due to start. The rest is history.

What a history. What a story. What a horse.

Phar Lap: 'the greatest of all time'

Eight days, four races, four wins. Phar Lap

was the thread that held the whole of the 1930

Melbourne Cup Carnival together.

After winning the mile-and-a-quarter

Melbourne Stakes on the opening Saturday

and then the two-mile Melbourne Cup on the

Tuesday, he was back at Flemington on the

Thursday to win the Linlithgow Stakes, then a

weight-for-age contest over a mile. To round

things off he returned on the meeting's final

Saturday to lift the Fisher Plate over a mile and

a half.

"I can understand why Telford ran him

on all four days – the horse was really tough

and in top form," says Phar Lap expert Geoff

Armstrong.

Summing up why he believes Phar Lap

stands out above all others, Armstrong says:

"Whenever we get a great horse here, whether

it's Tulloch, Kingston Town, Makybe Diva,

Black Caviar or Winx, we always say he or she is

the greatest horse since Phar Lap. It's amazing

that Phar Lap is the one horse who has entered

our culture like no other.

"I think part of that comes back to the fact

he ran during the depression. Part of it comes

back to the fact his first great season was 1929

when the media was becoming a big deal

thanks to the wireless and newsreels, so people

could hear and see him win.

"However, I think the thing

that really sets him apart

is he is just the greatest
