Christmas In April Sue Muller
Christmas in April arrives but
once a year, always on the last
Saturday in April. This is one
of the club ’ s longest running
community service projects,
and most popular.
This year the ski club co-
sponsored a house with the
Columbia Church of Christ.
This turned out to be a great
partnership, and hopefully we
will continue this partnership for
years to come.
Our mission for the day was to
replace some dry wall in the
bathrooms and paint them as
well, and to tidy up the front
yard. There were some odd
jobs around the house, like
replacing a faucet, and
repairing the front door. We
also had an electrician on hand
to replace the panel box and fix
some other electrical problems.
A special thanks goes out to
Jan O ’ Connor who, even
though she couldn ’ t be there
to work on the 30th, made sure
we had lunch and secured
pizza donations for the hungry
crew from Domino ’ s Pizza in
Hickory Ridge. Ron Maseda
was new to the Christmas in
April crew last year, and once
again stepped up to the plate to
be the Safety Captain.
For all of you who came
together on the 30th, thank you
for giving of yourselves in
kindness and spirit to help the
Campos family. I look forward
to working with all of you again
next year!

Happy June Everyone,
Although summer is not quite here our ski trip committee already has
the next season ’ s trips all set up. Be sure to attend the June 13
meeting to get the finalized schedule and meet the trip leaders. Of
course, it ’ s your first chance to sign up for a trip so bring your check
book too. As always, there are lots of activities to keep us occupied
during the off-ski months. Check out the Activities Page later in this
newsletter.
There ’ s still time to take advantage of the early payment discount on
membership dues. The June 13 meeting is the cut-off for the discount,
so don ’ t delay.
Have you marked your calendar for the big THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY
DANCE on July 23? See Mikie at the next meeting to buy tickets.
YOUR Ski Club needs YOU - remember it ’ s only through our
volunteers that we are the great club we are.
We are in need of a Coordinator for the Annual Crab Feast. Much of
the work is already done such as reserving a date ( 8/28/11 ) , securing
a location, and finding a source for the crabs and other food; also, we
have our favorite beer man back again. We ’ re once again going to
have it at the picnic pavilion at the Applied Physics Lab with its big field
area for games; and they have port-a-pots there, always a good
thing. We need someone to oversee the event, arrange for games in
the field, some music, get the snack foods, and whatever else might be
fun. We even have the snow cone arrangements already made, so you
see, there's not much left to do. Contact Pres Deb at
[email protected] or see her at the meeting.
Remember to come to the June meeting because it ’ s your first chance
to sign up for ski trips, and as The Moose says, “ sign up early, and
often ” .

It may be summer here but as I write this column it is 28 degrees at Arapahoe Basin with a 96” base at mid-mountain and 15” of new snow. It’s time to take a break from
summer and plan your next ski season. As you recall last year our first trip sold out at the June meeting before 8:00pm and by the end of the meeting three trips had but a few spaces left.
Our coordinator Bill Schrodel and the ski trip committee have done a moosetacular job planning our most ambitious season yet with 11 trips including two back-to-back trips, and a return to the East coast for Spring Break. There are so many great choices I think I need to pick a couple that really stand out so, here are the Moose Picks for 2012.
The first is Jay Peak. But Moose, you say, aren’t you a Colorado skiing Moose? Jay Peak has undergone over $130 million in upgrades since we were there last and it really got the Moose’s attention. Improvements include the Tram Haus Lodge with a 60 person tram right outside your door, the new Hotel Jay, a fully enclosed all season Water Park, the Ice Haus Arena, and Club House Nordic Center, not to mention new restaurants and après ski haunts. Snowmaking has
been upgraded to include 100 new high-velocity, super-cooled air snow towers. Families with young children will enjoy the new 300’ completely enclosed magic carpet area. This is not your father’s Jay Peak!
My second pick has to be the home and originator of the term “Champagne Powder”, Steamboat. This is our New Years destination, and they are rolling out the red carpet for us. The condos are providing a bottle of wine upon arrival and free coffee and doughnuts are available in the lobby every day. They have the best glade skiing in America to use up those doughnut calories too. Last year our New Years trip sold out with a wait list before the July meeting even got started so, if I were you, I would come to the meeting with check in hand for this one. It may sell out in June!
My antlers are all a-quiver just thinking about skiing and the great trip schedule we have for 2012. Some still did not heed the wisdom of the Moose last season and they came to me with sorrowful faces because they were left at home, in the rain, with influenza, wishing they had signed up for a ski trip before it was too late. Oh, woe to those that do not heed the Moose! You know what you have to do. Come to the meeting extra early this time with check in hand and sign up early and often.

At the May 2010 general meeting, the Ski Club recognized the the
following members for their contributions during the past year.
It was announced that wedding bells have pealed for Rob Foard and Pat D’Adamo. We all wish them a lifetime of happiness.
At the May meeting, Darrin Bragunier made an appearance, much to the delight—and relief—of the members. It appears that he was involved in a rather serious auto accident in February, one that left him unable to write, email, and the like. But, he seemed hale and hearty; a welcome outcome after a harrowing experience. We hope to see him on the slopes this season.

I am excited to report that the Ski Trip Committee just finished the schedule on May 11th. We have put together a very full schedule with 11 trips this year. There are 7 trips to western resorts, 2 trips to Europe, 1 to Canada, and a final trip to Jay Peak. This is the first eastern trip we have put on the schedule in a few years, but Terry really found us a great deal at the DC Ski Show, and I think it’s a great deal for families at spring break.
Our season is starting out with a trip to Steamboat, which is a great location to be at for Christmas. We will then roll into January with two great ski locations starting with a trip to Telluride at the Peaks, which are very good condos on the mountain. The second trip is our first trip to Canada in a few years with a great trip to Whistler Blackcomb with “true ski in/ski out” lodging at the Coastal Blackcomb.
As we go into February we are participating in the BRSC trips with two back-to-back trip options. You can go to Breckenridge and Snowmass as independent trips, or if you can do the 2 trips as a combined package you can save the $430 off the airfare. The next 2 trips tie into the Eurofest with a trip to Les Trois Vallees, France followed by the Eurofest Andorra trip the week of March 2 to 10. If you choose to spend the two weeks in Europe we are saving you $1,000 on this combo option. Of course, if you need to, you can choose to do either of the BRSC trips or adjoining trips independent of each other.
Going into the heart of March we have 3 terrific options for you to consider. We will go to one of my favorite locations, Alta/Snowbird, the week of March 10-17th with lodging at the
Cliff Lodge. On March 17-24th we are going to Lake Tahoe with lodging at the Embassy Suites with breakfast and après ski included. Don’t forget, if you have the Epic Pass now Heavenly and North Star are options in Lake Tahoe. Our final trip in March is to Beaver Creek staying at the Kiva Lodge. I was at the Kiva in April, and it is a great new lodge for the club to utilize as it is ski in-ski out. and is great value.
The surprise this year was the great deal we were offered by Jay Peak and the improvements they have made to offer a complete mountain experience in addition to the great skiing they have always offered. This trip is priced as our value trip this ski season.
I hope to see the club open a Facebook presence that will allow us to expand the participation this year, and I will be using sanctioning to better help the trips sell. This means you really need to look at the trip schedule and put in your deposits on trips early this year. My goal is to afford the club members first dibs on trips through August. If you wait till September to sign up you may find that trips are selling out. Remember there is only a $25 cancellation fee if your make changes early on. So consider putting the deposit money down early if you are at all considering a trip.
I hope you are looking forward to a great ski season as much as I am. I know our trip leaders will offer you many successful ski trips.

Various types of trip insurance exist and are designed to protect you from loss for covered reasons. Depending upon the insurance policy, these covered reasons can include flight cancellations/delay, lost bags, theft, illness, medical emergencies, etc. Some policies will even cover you if you cancel for any reason, but it will cost you extra for that protection.
The things you should ask yourself are: Do I have medical insurance coverage where I’m going? Your medical insurance may not cover you once
you leave the USA. Even if it does, many foreign hospitals and doctors will want up-front proof of coverage and/or payment before they even see you. Or they may admit you but then not let you leave. Many trip insurance companies will provide this as part of their coverage.
Do I have medical evacuation coverage where I’m going? Even if you have medical coverage, it usually does not cover the cost of bringing you home in an emergency.
Can I afford to replace my luggage and its contents if they get lost or stolen? The amount that the airlines will pay is limited. Trip insurance may offer you better coverage.
Is my airline ticket non-refundable? If so, you’ll probably get nothing back if your plans change or you miss your flight. Or, the airline may charge you a hefty fee to make a change. Many group tickets for our Columbia Ski Club trips are non-refundable. Trip insurance may cover you here.
Can I afford to lose the entire cost of my trip if I cannot go? Columbia Ski Club trip participants are on the hook for all unrecoverable expenses if they cancel at any time for any reason. If your trip leader cannot fill your spot with another person, you may be stuck paying for a condo or hotel room spot that you won’t be using.
Some of our vendors will include medical coverage insurance for foreign trips, but you should always check with your trip leader when you sign up to determine what is or is not included in your trip cost. Even if there is some insurance coverage provided, it may not include other coverages that you would like, such as trip cancellation.
