Future Parish Staffing

Last week, Bishop Lennon joined the priests of the

diocese in a workshop about future trends in Catholicism

in the USA and in Cleveland. The presenter was Fr.

Stephen Fichter of CARA, the Center for Applied

Research of the Apostolate.

After laying the foundation and accuracy of CARA’s

research, Fr. Steve shared with us the following:

In 1950, 75% of all Catholics in the US lived in the

“Catholic triangle”. The Catholic triangle is a line drawn

from Chicago to Washington D.C. to Boston and back to

Chicago. That percentage has not changed until recently.

But today, only 50% of Catholics live within that

triangle. The influx of Latin immigrants who are largely

Catholic and reside mostly in the Southwest has changed

the Catholic demographic in our country.

Today there are 692,000 Catholics in our diocese. By

the year 2040 there will be only 455,000. Fifteen years

ago there were 816,000 Catholics in the Cleveland

diocese and 100 more priests than there are today.

Today there are 256 active diocesan priests. Fifteen

years from now, in the year 2030, there will be 156

priests. In 2035 there will be 144 priests and in 2040

there will be 140 priests. “Unless there is some major

dramatic change” said Fr. Fichter, “you have some work

to do”.

There was no direction after the meeting. It might

have been good to imagine how, in 20 years, 144 priests

are going to manage the 185 parishes of the diocese.

Forty parishes will have to pair themselves up with

another forty parishes. In other words, in forty situations,

one priest will be pastor of two parishes. In Cuyahoga

County alone that scenario would look like this:

St. Casimir with St. Casimir

St. Peter with St. Paul

St. Barbara with St. Augustine

St Patrick Bridge Ave, with St Malachi

St. Mark with OLA

St. Mel with St Vincent

Blessed Trinity with St. Patrick

Our Lady of Lourdes with Holy Name

St. John Nepomucene with St. Stanislaus

St. Clare with Sacred Hear of Jesus,

St. Monica with Sts. Peter and Paul

St. Therese with St. Martin de Tours

Our Lady of Guadalupe with Sts. Cosmas and Damien

St. Raphael with St. Bernadette

St Christopher with St. Ladislas

St. Adalbert Berea with St. Mary Berea

St. Clement with St. Luke

St. James with Transfiguration Cleveland

St. Richard with St. Brendan

St. Francis de Sale Parma, with St. Charles

St. Matthias w/ Assumption Broadview Hts.

St. Ambrose with St. Colette

These account for only 22 “twinnings”. Another 18

pairings would have to be decided upon just to have one

priest in each designated ministry. Can you imagine one

priest serving St. Christopher and St. Lads; or one priest

serving St. Mark and OLA? And if not, you’d have to

come up with some other solution.

One way to look at this crisis would be to re-envision

priesthood. Could we have part-time priests say Mass?

Could priests who have left and gotten married return?

More priests coming from Africa, India and South

America might also offer a temporary solution.

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

In September your 10,320 lbs. of recycled paper saved :

87.72 Trees

1,290.00 Pounds of CO2

17.03 Cubic Yards of Land fill space

36,120.00 Gallons of Water

21,156.00 Kilowatts of Electricity

5.16 Homes Heated for 6 Months

309.60 Pounds of Air pollutants

And earned Blessed Trinity $169.41 for our recycled paper and

cardboard. Thanks to all those who took the time to recycle.

The Children of Light are youth who are preparing for Baptism and/

or First Eucharist. You may notice them some weekends as you enter

church. They will be participating in the ministry of hospitality by

standing at the church doors with their families to greet you before

Mass. The Children of Light will wear a nametag identifying them as

a Child of Light Greeter. Please take a moment to meet these youth,

support them as they learn about our Church Ministries, and pray for

them and their families during their time of formation.
