Let Us Pray! O Lord, giver of life and source of freedom, I know that all I have received is from your hand. Gracious and loving God, You call us to be stewards of Your abundance, the caretakers of all you have entrusted to us. Help us to always use Your gifts wisely and teach us to share them generously. Send the Holy Spirit to work through us, bringing Your message to those we serve. May our faithful stewardship bear wit-ness to the love of Jesus Christ in our lives. We pray with grateful hearts, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Blessed Lord, accept this burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for You.

Like this candle, I am ready to be used in your service without asking why and to what purpose.

Even as this candle, I wish to stand in Your presence and to be consumed in the light and warmth of our Love.

Please hear my prayer and, if it is Your will, grant my petition.

But above all, make me loyal and faithful to You in all circumstances of my life.

Amen.

Dear Parish Family,

Grace, love, joy, and peace to you in Christ Jesus our Lord! I pray you have been doing well! I received so many beautiful cards congratulating me on 5 years of ordination to the priest-hood! Thank you all so much for your thoughtfulness and prayers! It really is a joy to be a priest and I am so grateful to God that I get to be your priest in this time. You may have noticed I was not around too much over the last two months. I was asked to lead a spirituality program at the seminary for 6 of our seminarians who were not able to attend the regular program they would have attended in Omaha, Nebraska, due to Covid-19. I attempted to go back and forth, but much of my time and focus was in the formation of these young men. I am happy to report that each one of them was highly motivated, ready, and willing to grow in their love for Jesus Christ! I was so impressed with these young men and filled with great hope! Each of them came to know the love of God in a way that they had not known it before. They also discovered things about themselves which were new

to them and extremely helpful in understanding the unique gift that they are to the world! All in all, we had an amazing time walking together with Jesus and learning to hear his voice clearly together! I am super grateful to Fr. Steve and all of you for sharing me with the seminary community this summer! Not only did the men I was working with grow in self-knowledge and love for God, but I also grew by leaps and bounds! I was brought to a new depth of understanding that what I love most in life is God and watching him work in the lives of the people around me!

Attempting to balance my parish assignment, worship office assignment, and this summer project has all but worn me out, so this week I will be going on vacation. I am grateful to Fr. Steve, Fr. Bob and Fr. Ken for the fraternal charity we share and their support that is unfailing. I am looking forward to hitting the ground running when I get back!

Love and prayers, Fr. Levi

Another parable! What’s it worth to you? This week the Gospel of Matthew presents us with yet another

wonderful parable of Jesus. Because we don’t use parables much, if ever in our world today, they may not seem that significant but when used cor-rectly, they can be very effective. Jesus went from using clear teaching and lessons in his sermon on the mount, to parables. His parables present clear stories using everyday events and examples that everyone who was listening would know and un-derstand the imagery according to their everyday lives. The cleverness of the parable was that it cre-ated two different groups of people among the peo-ple who were listening based on how they respond-ed to the story. There is no clear single ending to the parable, the individual listening creates the end based on how he or she responds to the message presented. The parable from today’s gospel speaks about the kingdom of heaven as a treasure buried in a field or a fine pearl, both of which are found as individual. The response of the individual when they find the treasures and the end result are significant. Have you figured it out for yourself? What is the kingdom of heaven worth to you? How far are we willing to go to obtain this great treasure and what are we willing to give up for it? The cross reminds us that we do not have to pay for salvation. We do not have to sell everything we own, empty our bank accounts and 401k’s in order to purchase salvation. Jesus gave us the gift of sal-

vation, the ultimate treasure by paying with his life for us. But what’s it worth to you? What is our re-sponse to this treasure? Do we even acknowledge the beauty and value of the treasure in our lives? The miracles and teachings of Jesus attracted many, and they still do today. Sometimes I think the clever parables Jesus used then, get lost in our modern world because many of us cannot relate to the imagery. In Jesus’ time, the parables them-selves, revealed the true nature of those who were listening according to their responses and the deci-sions they made in their lives after hearing them. Those who wanted to commit to the Kingdom of God listened carefully and dug deeper to find fur-ther understanding in their own lives then acted on it. Then there were others who liked to just hear Jesus speak but weren’t bothered with truly listen-ing to what he as saying, and would rather dismiss his teaching because it required too much work to try and understand on a personal level and make changes in life. I sometimes think it’s like going to Mass, hearing the gospel being read with our ears but not really listening with our hearts, to the mes-sage then going home that day never to think about it or what’s it worth to you? Are we willing to open our Bibles and put more time into re-reading the parables to understand more deeply?

Something to think about!

Fr. Steve

DEACON TIM’S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW A woman found a lamp and as she exam-ined it out popped a genie. “Do I get three wishes?” she asked. “Nope, I’m a one-wish genie. What will it be?” She pulled out a map and said “see this map? I want these countries to stop fighting so we can

have world peace.” “They’ve been fighting for many centuries. I’m not that good,” replied the Ge-nie. “What else do you have?” “Well, I’d like a good man. One who’s considerate, loves kids, is filthy rich, likes to cook, and doesn’t watch sports all day.” “Okay,” the genie said with a sigh. “Let me see that map again.” (from Reader’s Digest: Laughter Really is the Best Medicine) What would you ask for if God or the one wish genie appeared to you? Today we hear Solo-mon asks for wisdom which shows he is already wise. But Solomon didn’t manage or use his God-given gift very well. He married too many wives. He spent his country into bankruptcy. When he died the country split into two kingdoms. Eventually it fell to the Babylonians and never returned to its greatness again. My wife tells me I watch too many shows on the search for treasure, like the Curse of Oak Island or the lost treasures of the Inca’s and Mayan’s. To-day we read about the man who found a priceless pearl and sold all he had to purchase it. For us, nothing else is more important than our search for the Kingdom of God. Everything we attain or might attain in life is temporary. Entering the Kingdom of God is happiness forever. What could be more important than that?

Our sympathy is extended to the families of:

ALICE LEWELLEN AND CLAIRE WESLING

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Please remember members of our parish who are in nursing homes, the

homebound, the sick and their caregivers in your prayers.

May God’s mercy shine on them.

St. Padre Pio: Man of Hope is a revised edition of the original book by Renzo Al-legri. It was originally released in 2000 and the revised edition includes five new

chapters which cover the years between Beatification and Canonization, and the work of St. John Paul II dur-ing this process. There are many books written about St. Pio of Pietrelcina, but if you have not read any of them, this is an excellent one to read first. Or, if you have read sever-al books on this popular saint, this may be the one that you like best. Allegri's book is a compilation of infor-mation about Padre Pio which came from interviews, letters and documents concerning this Saint. The book is well-researched and it does not hold back on naming names, especially concerning the persecutions suffered by Padre Pio. Through this book, you will discover a deep insight and appreciation of this recent Saint, who only died in September of 1968. You will also be introduced to an interesting list of characters, especially ones who were originally opposed to this humble priest. People like a freemason who he converted, a doctor who thought that he was a phony, along with many other people who had miracles happen in their lives because of the prayers of this holy man of God. Padre Pio and his story is similar to another of my favorite Saints, St. Andre Bessette. This is true be-cause of their intense Faith in God, but also because each had important people that originally thought they were scam artists, but through a miracle, become devot-ed friends of these holy Saints. I joyfully give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards because I know that if you read this book, you will grow into a deeper relationship with God, and have a better appreciation of how God can assist in your life.
