Welcome to my first newsletter! I am a little

more than halfway through my W200 Using

Computers in Education course at Indiana Uni-

versity and this weeks assignment involves theuse of a publisher document to share informa-

tion I have researched using various electronic

databases and search engines available out there.

Hopefully you will enjoy my topic of research

and take in the methods I share for use when doing research of your own.

Indiana University. I am currently sharing my experiences and coursework for

W200 Using Computers in Education via my blog. This newsletter is part of an

assignment so future issues are uncertain. Previous W200 assignments are avail-

able for viewing on my blog. Topics covered so far include: thoughts on types

and use of technology, Web 2.0, creating blogs and podcasts, photosharing, and

assistive technology. I have also posted links to some of my favorite websites

and images of some of my artwork. I love what I have learned so far in this

class. I know it is going to benefit me when I start teaching professionally. Myhope is that my blog posts inspire viewers to explore what these technologies

    can do for them!

    Fourteen years ago

    I made a line of

    stones in Morecambe

    Bay. It is still there,

    buried under the

    sand, unseen. All my

    work still exists in

    some form.

    Meet Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy is an artist from Cheshire, England best known for his out-door sculpture work. He creates his art using natural materials such as twigs, leaves, bark, stones, ice, snow, feathers, and rain. Andy studies movement, change, growth and decay with his art; all of which are inevitable processes ofthe natural world. He documents his artwork by photographing it in stages ofcompletion as well as deterioration.I was introduced to Andy by my boyfriend Ryan who studied art at Herron. After looking at some images of Andys work I began to think about howsmart it was to create with materials so diverse and so plentiful and so inex-pensive! That thought then translated to what an easy and fun outdoor projectthis could be for a design or photography class. For this assignment I decided I would research articles about Andy, outdoorart projects, and art photography. I started with the IUPUI library website asinstructed and explored several databases available through that site. I discov-ered that not all databases recovered material related to my searches. I choseeducation as my subject first, then tried art as my subject next using thetopics listed above for my searches. The database that generated the most ar-ticles for me was ERIC (CAS). Although some articles that sounded perfect formy assignment would have to be borrowed or have a special log-in to access. Ialso had success with Wilson Web, although the material I was hoping to findin the articles was not quite there.I did however find one article that fit my idea perfectly. An article titled Art inthe Woods by Sue Webster tells of a middle school art teacher who after tell-ing her sixth grade students about Andy Goldsworthy, took them into thewoods next to the school and had them create their own outdoor sculptures. She documented their work with her camera and then had them write a paperabout their experience. She also took some high school photography studentswith her, but they documented the kids participating in the project rather than

the art. I love this idea. I think that it is a project that couldbe easily adapted to whatever age group Im teaching. On page 4 of this newsletter I have listed the articles Ifound using the method instructed. I also included links tosome websites on Andy Goldsworthy for your enjoyment.

    Using IUPUI Search Engines

    P A G E 3V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1

Using the IUPUI library database to search for articles was more difficult than I thought it would be. Be it

my left-brain approach to completing most tasks or the fact that my research topic did not lend itself well

to this type of search resource, I found very few helpful articles via this database.

I think had I researched more about the teaching method than the art experience I may have had more

success with my search. There were two articles in particular that sounded perfect for my research: Andy

Goldsworthy and the Outdoor Classroom by Michael Sacco, SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for

Teachers; v109 n2 p23-25 Oct 2009 found using ERIC (CAS) and Kindergarten & Andy Goldsworthyby C.

Hinshaw, SchoolArts v108 n8 p52 Apr 2009 found using Wilson Web. These articles unfortunately were

not available for viewing via the IUPUI library website.

My multiple unsuccessful searches did however provide me with lots of practice conducting the search

itself. I feel that if the need came about to research something via the databases on the IUPUI library

website I am well prepared. My father also enjoys finding technical articles to read for entertainment

though library websites and now I may be able to help him find more articles using what I have learned

    during this assignment.

The databases available on the IUPUI library website I feel were very well organized and fairly easy tonavigate . To compare, I also pulled up the Indianapolis-Marion County Library website to see what kind

of databases were accessible through a public library website. On the website main page there is an ac-

cess link to iLibrary Online Databases. You have to have a paid subscription via library card number and

pin to access the information available on this site, but it looked as if it had similar items available to

view. The bar on the left hand side had links for student resources, business resources, e-books, news-

papers and magazines, health resources, and reference sources.

I think in the future when I do research for an assignment or lesson plan

or art project I will keep in mind the databases introduced to me in this

    assignment.
