B Medical Systems’s Blood Chain range has been specially dedicated for the supply of blood, vaccines and medicines in war time and in times of natural catastrophes. This range was created after that B Medical Systems had developed the model RCB 42 P for the Pentagon who was searching for a solution for the transport and storage of blood to the front line. This model became a standard and has been adopted by all NATO Armed Forces.

Made of rotomoulded polyethylene, the Blood Chain transport boxes offer excellent mechanical resistance, as proven by drop tests, and are not subject to corrosion. They are perfectly suited to intensive use, with frequent handling under difficult climatic conditions. The polyurethane foam injected between the double walls of these boxes ensures perfect insulation and thus preservation of the quality of blood, blood products and pharmaceutical products even over long periods of transport. Used with frozen icepacks or also wet ice for some versions, they are fully self-suffi-cient with respect to the ambient environment and therefore ideal for all transport stages.

What is the meaning of “Solar Direct Drive”?

> The Solar Direct Drive solution consists of several refrigerators and freezers for vaccines or medicines working straight from solar panels without batteries and regulatores.

> This solution provides a reliable cold chain for vitally important vaccines or medicines even in the most remoted areas. The Solar Direct Drive solution uses the only energy source that never runs dry : our sun!

WHO has put in place with its PQS a new performance and quality system for the Cold Chain Equipment.

PQS performance specification for :

The development of a new, successful and SAFE product according to PQS requirements has to fulfill a number of defined parameters, the most important of those are :

Time in days that the device can maintain the vaccine load within a temperature range of +2°C to +8°C under low solar radiation conditions (e.g.: rain ).

> Hold over time

Time in hours that the device can maintain the vaccine load within a temperature range of +2°C to +10°C without any solar power input and at the highest rated ambient temperature.

RCB 4

The RCB 8 is perfectly suited for the transport of blood and blood products such as plasma. Its internal polysty-rene compartment protects the blood bags against direct contact with the frozen icepacks. Transparent folders containing identification documents at the front of the RCB 8 allow the contents to be identified without hav-ing to open the lids. The internal temperature can be displayed by an optional temperature recorder located in the container.

The RCB 4 is the smallest model in this range. It is easy to handle, thanks to its shoulder strap. The RCB 4 is fitted with a liquid crystal thermometer to monitor the inside temperature, with a polystyrene interior container and with a synthetic separation wall to prevent direct contact between the temperature-sensitive materials and the icepacks.

The boxes are made of rotomoulded polyethylene – a virtually indestructible plastic – and are characterised by an strength for protection against drops and knocks (as proven by drop test), as well as a perfect withstand against cor-rosion.

The polyurethane foam injected between the double walls of these boxes ensures perfect insulation of the contents and thus preservation of vaccine quality even over longer periods of transport. Used with frozen ice packs, they are fully self-sufficient with respect to the ambient environment and therefore ideal for transport stages.

The lid ensures a perfect seal for these containers and is equipped with rotomoulded grooves for facilitating stacking of the boxes, while the hinges are recessed to prevent getting caught on other boxes during handling.

The RCB 12 is sufficiently large to accommodate blood as well as a substantial amount of plasma. Transport is done on short distances by the RCB 12 type. The one latch of the lid can be lead-sealed to prevent any unauthor-ised handling of the contents during transport. Standard equipment that comes with the RCB 12 includes a remov-able steel compartment as well as 14 icepacks (of 600 ml).

Foreseen for a transport of larger quantities, the RCB 25 is sufficiently large to accommodate blood as well as a large amount of plasma. A plastic reinforcement at the bottom of the RCB 25 allows the removable steel com-partment to be held in place. The latches of the lid can be lead-sealed to prevent any unauthorised handling of the contents during transport. Standard equipment that comes with the RCB 25 includes a removable steel com-partment as well as 24 icepacks (of 600 ml).

MT 900

The model MT 900 has been specifically developed for the freezing of cooling elements. The appliance can ac-commodate up to 187 cooling elements at 0.6 l each and can freeze up to 60 cooling elements within 24 hours at an ambient temperature of +43 °C. Due to its low energy consumption, the use is very economical.

Simple and intuitive operation is ensured by the user-friendly operation and control panel, which is equipped with a red alarm control light for the monitoring of the in-terior temperature. The appliance features a visual alarm signal. The interior is automatically illuminated when the door is opened. An integrated rapid freeze button allows the quick freezing of larger batches.

RCB 42 P

The RCB 42 P is a thermostabilizer designed for storing and transporting pre-cooled blood and medicinal prod-ucts over long periods of time. The refrigerating unit op-erates with nearly all types of electricity (AC / DC). The RCB 42 P ensures mobility and provides all the services of a blood bank refrigerator. The RCB 42 P provides huge storage capacity. It can contain up to fifty 270 ml whole blood bags and is standard-equipped with 2 plastic-lami-nated wire baskets that facilitate charging. The forced-air refrigeration system ensures a constant, even tempera-ture. A thermoelectric unit (Peltier block) together with an electronic control unit keeps the temperature of the blood constant. The thermoelectric unit is switched au-tomatically form cooling to heating, depending on the ambient temperature. The perfect insulation ensures the temperature in the cool box to be kept constant for up to 10 hours when transporting or storing items without power supply at an ambient temperature of +32°C. The temperature within the container can be thus maintained at a preset temperature of +1°C to +10°C regardless of external climatic conditions. This is even applicable at ambient temperatures of -32°C to +43°C. The internal temperature can be displayed by an optional tempera-ture recorder located in the container.

The PCM stores latent heat at the required temperature at phase change (liquid / solid). The stored product will therefore remain at a near constant temperature for a specific period of time, without requiring active temperature control. The Eutectic Cooling Elements must be charged for the specified temperature prior to each use.
