The Blooming Chatter has been in publication for 49 years. CJ Danna has been the publisher for the past 3 years. Several days are needed to track down details, verify info and lay it all out in time to get it reproduced, emailed, or distributed a few days before the new month begins.

GROW TOGETHER
Greetings Members, The SGC office is open during the spring and summer months. Call the office to hear about what's new for members if you need updates. Also, read your E-Blasts and weekly group messages to learn about fundraising events for fall 2021, and summer plans in addition to virtual classes being offered by various Florida Garden Clubs . The FFGC magazine is a good source for a variety of classes and gatherings using Zoom technology. Contact and socializing are at the top of what many members list as their greatest needs since Covid began. Exercising and meeting with family and friends are also at the top of the list of favorite things to share when it possible. Thanks for the positive responses regarding our Blooming Chatter. We hope the SGC news is working to keep members fully informed. We hope this feature a member for future issues. If you are willing to share facts about past jobs and experiences which might be interesting to other members, please send an email to CJ Danna including your background biography and tidbits about your life's story which you are willing to share. We hope this feature works out well in future issues. Enjoy the sunshine as daylight hangs around a little longer each day. Marita Thompson
Marita celebrates her 100th Birthday April 11. Please send her a Birthday card to: 123 Oak Hill Drive, Sarasota, FL 34232. She became involved in the Sarasota Garden Club in the early 1980s after retiring with her husband Joseph from the Chicago area. She served as a board member (treasurer), advocate, and volunteer. In a recent conversation, she recalled helping secure funding for a (now replaced) patio. She also recalled her shock when a developer publicly announced his intent to obtain the Club’s beautiful grounds for a road to the under-construction development. It wasn’t the first-time businesses eyed the stunning and historic property. Members rallied and fought off the effort, attending many, many hearings and public meetings. As a result the Club sought, and succeeded, in obtaining historic status which would ensure the Club and its ground’s future. A fabulous musician (still), she also played piano for many events with her impressive jazz and Great American Songbook repertoire. She often recalls her wonderful years of service and involvement with the Sarasota Garden Club.
Ginger-Tomato Salmon
Ingredients 2 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped 2 teaspoons ginger spice paste 1 cup chicken stock 1 cup coconut milk 1 1/2 lb. salmon fillets, skin removed 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 (14.5-oz) can petite diced tomatoes, drained 1/4 cup pre-sliced green onions Chop garlic. Preheat large sauté pan on medium-high 2-3 minutes. Place garlic, ginger, stock, and coconut milk in pan; bring to a boil. Meanwhile, season salmon on both sides with salt and pepper. Add tomatoes and salmon to sauce, then reduce heat to medium-low; cook 8-10 minutes, basting fish with sauce occasionally, or until salmon is 145°F (or opaque and separates easily). Place salmon and sauce on rice; sprinkle with green onions and serve. CJ Danna

Since most of the preparations had already been
completed when Covid-19 appeared, we are
planning to meet with the flower show committees
in July and August – to review and refine the new
timeline.
In Horticulture, the growing plant material must be
in the possession of the exhibitor for ninety days
(mid-July.) It’s time to put on your thinking caps –
what are you going to enter? To increase your
options, we will be distributing some fresh plants
this spring following select meetings.

This past year has been a challenge, but now we’ve
done enough crossword puzzles and cleaned
enough closets. It’s time to move on. Let’s start
using our creativity - what classes appeal to you
and how could they be interpreted?

CLUB – FOUNDED 1927 1984 THOUGH 2008
1984 Creation of the Scholarship Program by Catherine LaBrie. 1993 Library added to the existing building with donation from the Souder’s family. 1995 Development of the Butterfly Garden by Catherine and Richard LaBrie. 1998 Butterflies recycled from ones created by our members for the 1983 SGC Flower Show co-chaired by Judy Schneider, and held at Robarts Arena were hung in an Easter Display at Sarasota Square Mall. 1998 Opening of the new Selby Library, SGC members, under direction of Catherine LaBrie, purchased and planted butterfly plants at the Library entrance. Opening ceremonies included SGC releasing butterflies. 1998 Grant of $8,500 received from the Bernard and Mildred Doyle Charitable Trust for the installation of a sprinkler system. 1999 The first “Music in Our Gardens” was conceived by Sue Angle, and began with the Florida West Coast Symphony presenting the Florida Brass Quintet. 1999 New Sarasota Garden Club’s sign installed. 2001 Received grant to create Memorial Brick Path for accessibility to the Butterfly Garden. 2002 Received City of Sarasota Proclamation signed by Mayor Carolyn J. Mason in celebrating 75 years with "Sarasota Garden Club Day". 2003 Awards by FFGC, Deep South, and National Garden Club for refurbishing the Mable Ringling Secret Garden. 2003 Birth of the Therapy Tea by Camellia Circle. 2006 Andrew Papineau became the first male President of the Sarasota Garden Club. 2008 Sarasota Garden Club changes from Circles to one club with a system of committees.

Bay Park Construction
It’s going to be very hard to access the Club while construction is being done on the roads around the Garden Club. Our roads are closed and we are only able to access the Club by going down 10th Street. They are digging up asbestos pipes underneath and restricting and edging the parking lots. It is going to be very difficult to navigate parking and everyone is cautioned to be extremely careful to prevent falls. It is suggested to park by the Auditorium or in front of The Bay if our parking circle is not accessible.

After much deliberation and concern for the raging numbers in the COVID-19 pandemic, I would like to postpone the current Civic Beautification schedule. I had contacted some of the businesses and the county/city possible award winners and they noted that many on their staff have been furloughed and their properties are not cared for properly. Therefore, I would like to start the CBC process in October, 2021 and include properties from 2020 and 2021 for the awards with an award ceremony either in Dec. 2021 or early Jan. 2022. Since it would be for 2 years, I would suggest either a luncheon or a cocktail party. Therefore, if you have any concerns or suggestions, please contact me and I will then contact the members in my committee. Thanks again, Pat Bonarek CBC Chair

Sunday, March 21st, “Symphony in the Gardens” A big Thank You to Kathi Ellis (Chair of this event), Kelly Goodwin, CJ Danna, and all the volunteers that helped clean-up. A remarkable performance by the Sarasota Music Conservatory. It was a very joyful and refreshing to be surrounded by the beautiful plants and trees in the Waterfall and Quiet Gardens. This is just the first of many performances we will enjoy by this group.

Tour of Deb Walker's Gardens: This offsite walking tour, on March 10th, was a fun morning for 23 SGC members in attendance. Deb and her co-hostess, Kimberly McNeil, were busy welcoming and directing where to park our cars. These gardens are a work in progress for both Deb and Kimberly. We had wonderful weather that day. Everyone had many questions about how she is growing vegetables, vertical hanging orchids, bromeliads, and mountings on trellises. Even though social distancing and still had a lovely drinks, cookies, and candy. Many thanks to Deb and Kimberly for a fun morning.

Botanical Gardens Report
Spring weather is finally here! So more volunteers are needed, since it's warming up in the mornings. We are still upgrading the Falling Waters and Quiet Gardens. Thanks to Karen Rosenbeck and Barbara Rao for donating many semi shade plants. Thanks to Ann Madden for donating dozens of bulbs which are to be planted along the swale. More trimming of all bushes & trees. Our main trimmer, Wiley Osborn is back working on many projects. Bruce Jensen is still doing repairs to our entrance signs so we can finish painting them. If you have a few hours on Friday mornings, there is a job waiting for you. We open at 8:00am and work until approx.11:00am with light refreshments after we finish working. Come and volunteer when you can.

Orchid tasks for April Get ready for full speed ahead for re-potting your orchids as spring weather is here now. It's time to get serious for taking your Phalaenopsis Orchids or other Orchids sold in moss out of the moss that usually is what they are potted in when you buy them. They are sold that way because moss is very cheap compared to bark potting media that Orchids grow best in. I also add some perlite and some charcoal also to the mix. Water heavily this month. I use time release fertilizer every 6 months, that way you only have to fertilize twice a year. I don't use harsh chemicals to fight thrips or mites. I feel it’s safer to use 1 ounce of liquid dish-washing soap per gallon of water. Make sure you water the Orchids extra hard the day before. Be sure to do this again in about 7 days. I put this in a spray bottle. Do not spray on open blooms. Make sure you spray both side of the leaves, or a bloom spike which has not opened yet. Kay Weber, Orchid Society & SGC member.

CELEBRATING 60 PLUS YEARS
Sarasota Garden Club’s HISTORIC MID-CENTURY MODERN BUILDING
1959-2021
Over 60 years ago members of the Sarasota Garden Club took a leap of faith after much planning and fund raising and built our Mid-Century Modern building designed in the Sarasota School of Architecture in 1959 by John Crowell. It was beautiful and soon the gardens became a show place for our community. After these many years our beloved building desperately needs some major restoration to return to her previous beauty and glory. Our goal to accomplish this is $215,000 by December 2021. How can you help? By participating in one of two programs:
(1) Buy a Brick for our Historic Mid-Century Modern building by either buying a brick or bricks for each $250 donation. Bricks are customized with your name, a family member’s name, a family name, or business name and will be placed in our garden along with acknowledgement on our Donor’s Board, or
(2) Become a Patron by donating $1,000 to $10,000 and joining other Patrons (both individuals, families, and/or companies). You will be memorialized on a Bronze Garden Plaque to be located in our garden, a brick, and acknowledged on our Donor’s Board.
