The city is alive and brings to life a penchant for industrial flair, architectural
materials and urban gardening. Rather than feminine romanticism, what we
have here is a reduced, technological language for communicating form
and material. Hints of masculinity are not out of place.

And here is the floristry:Floral elements are combined with relics of a past industrial age. Technical components such as old metal parts, rubber hoses and coal add cool, masculine touches and create a modern-looking connection to the present.

Pastels and lots of white set the stage when the new style borrows
elements from the shapes of the 1950s and 1960s and from Nordic
design. Material and pattern mixes meet up in refreshing ensembles
and create a new, light and airy world.
Enjoy the harmony

And here is the floristry:Various elements are harmonized by pale pastels, bringing together exotic flowers like Anthuriums and Calla lilies with domestic chrysanthemums and hydrangeas; grasses meet exotic leaves while twigs commune with seashells. In transparent and light arrangements, this diversity becomes the new Nordic trend.

These hair ornaments couldn’t be more bridal. The stems of the flowers are trimmed to a length of approx. 2 cm and dipped in wax to prevent dryness. Next they are attached to a hairband fitted with a curved piece of floral foam in a plastic frame and fastened with deco wire. These decora-tions will stay fresh all day long for the wedding.

REDISCOVERED:
Hanging plantersA decorating style that was
commonplace in Grandmother’s
day is now being rediscovered by
young plant lovers. Modern lofts
and rooms that reflect the youthful,
uncomplicated style of contemporary
living provide an ideal backdrop for
the new trend, staging a revival
for HANGING PL ANTERS. And
alongside plants that lend even
industrial-looking living quarters
new vitality and a touch of nature
with their cascading green energy.
A trend welcomed by gardeners
and florists alike.

PLANTS
[1] SNAKE LEAF FERN
This fern is known as the “snake leaf”, botanical name Aglaomorpha coronans.
A native of the Himalayan region of India and Southeast Asia, it has leaves with fine venation
patterns that can grow to lengths of up to one metre. Mature leaves are more deeply cleft than those of adolescent plants.
LEAF & FORMWhen it comes to foliage in floral designs unusual and
attractive FORM is important. The leaves shown here were
all cultivated and tested for their suitability as floristry material
by the horticultural education and experimental station in
Geisenheim. We are of the opinion that they are ready for
market and can highly recommend them to florists.
[2] BOWSTRING HEMP
A native of Central Africa, bowstring hemp, botanical name Sansevieria trifasciata, is an evergreen perennial plant with long, stiff sword-like leaves that appear waxed. Many cultivars have variegated foliage with silvery-white, pale green or yellow stripes on the leaf margins. The leaves can grow to lengths of up to 1.5 meters with a width of around 30 cm.
[3] CAST-IRON PLANT
The cast-iron plant, botanical name Aspidistra elatior, is a species of flower-
ing plant in the lily family and a native of China and Japan. Its dark evergreen,
linear leaves can grow to lengths of up to 60 cm and often display speckles or white
stripes. They have a slightly woody, prominent ribs with sturdy leaf blades.
[4] PHILODENDRON
Philodendron ‘Xanadu’, or simply Xanadu, is a native of the tropical rainforests
of Central America. It has long deeply dissected, lobed leaves with prominent
venation, which can be yellowish, in contrast to the glossy green of the leaf. Compared to other philodendrons, it has smaller, compact leaves.
An excellently suited material for enhancing floral designs.

116-123_Geisenheim_bw.indd 116 15.12.15 14:09
Under the direction of horticultural engineer Wolfgang Schorn of the department for specialized horticultural information, the horticultural education and experimental station in Geisenheim (an institute of the “Landesbetrieb Landwirtschaft Hessen” horticultural centre) has the goal of cultivating new cut cultivars for the German horticultural sector and at the same time producing domestic materials for wreaths and bouquets for the floristry industry. The new cut greenery and ornamental foliage represents an economically feasible alternative, as beautiful glossy leaves provide a predominantly green basis for better emphasizing the colours of the flowers in an arrangement. And such showy leaves can be used in smaller quantities.

The first layer of Capiz oyster shells is pinned to the out-side of a foam base, and the second layer is applied with hot glue in an overlapping arrangement. A ribbon with a bow at one side adds a pretty touch.
