Youth Council Updates
The Youth Council made several recommendations and changes for the 2020 4-H Program Year and 4-H/FFA Livestock Shows. The changes are:
Photography interviews will be the Tuesday evening of fair week.
All clothing exhibitors are required to interview. In case of a conflict, the exhibitor must contact the Extension Office prior to the clothing judging day. It is recommended to make a video discussing the skills and challenges of making the exhibit. This video would be shared with the judge on your behalf.
2nd Year Bucket Calf will be done similarly to 1st Year Bucket Calf. The contest will be on the same day and follow the 1st Year Bucket Calf Show. Second Year Bucket Calf will consist of an interview, record book, and in the ring portions. The interview and record book will be judged prior to the “in the ring” portion, allowing for the winner to be announced at the conclusion of the “in the ring”. Additionally, the calf may be shown on Friday in either the respective breeding or market class. It is not required to show again on Friday, but does have the option.
Pen of Three: For goats, sheep, and pigs, the Pen of Three must consist of three animals from the same exhibitor.
Attention Webster County Club Leaders
This Advancement Level Workshop is geared towards helping Adults, Extension personnel, volunteers, and leaders have a better under-

towards 4-Hers that have passed their Level 2
and want to move on to levels 3 & 4. During

Innovative Youth Corn Challenge
Do you enjoy being outside? Learning new things about crops? Considering a career involving crops, insects, diseases, soils, water or more? Do you want to help figure out how to feed our world’s growing population in a sustainable way?
Nebraska Extension and the Nebraska Corn Board are offering the ninth Innovative Youth Corn Challenge contest. This contest, open to 4-H members (age 10 & older as of Jan. 1st) or FFA members (in-school members), guides participants
through all aspects of corn production, as well as agricultural careers related to corn production.
As a team (2 or more participants), youth will be challenged to implement a production practice different than normal to determine if they increased their yield. Economics and sustainability of the practice will also be considered. Yields, crop-
ping history, and production information will be collected in the Corn Yield Challenge management summary.
Cash prizes and plaques are given. First place receives $1,000, second place receives $500, and third place receives $250. Sustainability, crop scouting and “extra mile” awards are also given as cash awards.
To participate in 2020, youth must complete and return an entry form by March 15th to the Fillmore County Extension Office in Geneva, NE. Forms can be downloaded after January 1st at cropwatch.unl.edu/youth/activities. For more infor-
mation, contact Brandy VanDeWalle at [email protected].
